South Korean poet and novelist Han Kang was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature Thursday for a poetic and unsettling body of work that the Nobel committee said “deals with historical pains and exposes the weakness of human life”.
A slow-burning international literary star who has won multiple awards in South Korea and Europe, Han is the first Asian woman and the first South Korean writer to win the Nobel Literature Prize. She was awarded for books, including The Vegetarian and Human Acts, which explore the pain of being human and the scars (伤疤) of Korea’s unstable history.
Nobel Literature Committee member Anna-Karin Palm said, “Han writes about pain and loss, whether individual or collective, with the same pity and care. And this, I think, is something that is quite remarkable.”
Han, 53, won the International Booker Prize for fiction translated into English in 2016 for The Vegetarian, an unsettling novel in which a woman’s decision to stop eating meat has disastrous results.
Works translated into English also include Greek Lessons — about the relationship between a woman who can no longer speak and a teacher who is losing his sight, Human Acts which is based on the real-life killing of pro-democracy protesters in Han’s home city of Gwangju in 1980 and The White Book, a poetic novel that draws on the death of Han’s older sister shortly after birth.
Human Acts won Italy’s Malaparte Prize in 2017 and The White Book was an International Booker Prize finalist in 2018.
Her most recent novel, We Do Not Part, is due to be published in English next year. It touches on a chapter in South Korea’s 20th-century history, which saw the country endure war, the division of the Korean peninsula and dictatorship. It’s a reality show about a loving couple waiting to welcome their new arrival, watched by thousands of fans. But the stars of Royal Cam, now in its 10th season, aren’t celebrities in love but northern royal albatrosses — seabirds from New Zealand with three-meter wingspans (翼展).
The 24-hour live stream of the birds’ breeding (繁殖) season at Taiaroa Head on New Zealand’s South Island was established to raise awareness of the threatened species, numbers of which have grown slowly in time thanks to careful protection efforts.
Millions have watched the stream since it began in 2016. “Before that, it was very difficult to follow an albatross’ life cycle because they’re only on land 15% of the time,” said Sharyn Broni, a ranger (护林员) in the Department of Conservation who has worked with the birds for nearly 30 years. “You’d have to travel a long way to see one.”
Royal Cam’s popularity has exploded in recent years. On a busy comments page hosted by New Zealand’s Department of Conservation, fans track the birds’ locations on an app, discuss interesting moments and even create art inspired by the albatrosses.
Unlike human reality shows, drama is rare. Royal albatrosses usually mate for life. Rangers selecting the birds to follow each year avoid anything at issue: no first-time parents and no fight-loving personalities. This year’s stars are RLK, a 12-year-old male, and GLG, a 14-year-old female, who have raised two chicks before. Their names come from the colors on bands that rangers attach to their legs.
Everything happens slowly in the show and that’s what many fans enjoy about it. Clouds drift by, ships pass in the distance and the sun sets, turning the sky pink and peach. During the incubation (孵化) season in January, the albatrosses sit on their eggs.
But there are occasional moments of drama, with albatross crash landings and mating dances. And perhaps the most exciting aspect is the progress that this group has made. When protection measures began in 1937, there was just one mating pair here, but now there are more than 60.
8.What can we say about the albatrosses according to the text
A.Efforts to protect them have worked. B.They reproduce very quickly.
C.They can be easily found in many places. D.Their natural home has been lost.
9.What can we infer from paragraph 5
A.Albatrosses are as popular as human celebrities.
B.The albatrosses for the show are carefully selected.
C.Long-term albatross mating drives the show’s viewership.
D.Albatrosses’ names are too complex for fans to remember.
10.Why do many fans like the Royal Cam
A.It saves many injured birds. B.It provides useful tips on bird-watching.
C.It’s full of dramatic moments. D.It shows a peaceful life.

Mothers often say that pregnancy (怀孕) is a time unlike any other - both the body and the brain change in new and sometimes scary ways. And a new study has tried to find out exactly how much of a change women’s brains experience during pregnancy and the early stages of motherhood.
According to an international research team, 94% of pregnant people’s gray matter experiences a reduction in volume of up to 5%. “Pregnancy transforms the brain,” the study’s senior author Oscar Vilarroya said.
Gray matter is found throughout our central nervous system, which is in the brain and in the spinal cord (脊髓).The Cleveland Clinic says gray matter plays a significant role in all aspects of human functioning, adding that it is essential for controlling movement, memory and emotions.
To explore the changes in gray matter during pregnancy, the researchers looked at 127 first-time mothers in Spain. They were tracked from before they became pregnant to six months after giving birth, and had five MRI scans to look at their brain structure at different stages of pregnancy and motherhood. Their hormone (激素) levels were also measured, and they completed questionnaires about their wellbeing.
The study found that gray matter volume changes in a U-shaped pattern. So volumes decreased by 2.7% during the second three-month period of pregnancy, and 5% just before birth, but began to increase again in the six months after giving birth. Variations in hormone levels were identified as the likely cause for the changes in gray matter.
The recovery in gray matter volume after giving birth was associated with greater mother-baby attachment, Vilarroya said, although the volume didn’t recover to pre-pregnancy level. This recovery along with the level of attachment to the baby is also influenced by the state of the mother’s mental health, the study found.
The researchers said that understanding more about the way women’s brains change during pregnancy is crucial, because it allows experts to better support new mothers.
12.What can be concluded about gray matter from the text
A.It only exists in the brain. B.Its volume is fixed in our body.
C.It is important for human functions. D.Its main role is to adjust hormone levels.
13.How did the researchers conduct the study
A.By tracking women at different stages. B.By analyzing questionnaires from fathers.
C.By observing the color of the babies’ eyes. D.By testing pregnant women and their babies.
14.After giving birth, the gray matter of new mothers ______.
A.continues to reduce B.starts to increase
C.remains the same as at birth D.returns to pre-pregnancy volume
15.What might happen if a new mother has poor mental health
A.Her baby may get sick easily. B.Her memory may suffer a sharp decrease.
C.Her attachment to the baby may be weak. D.Her hormone levels will rise quickly.

When I was a kid, Christmas was always the most exciting time for me. New Year’s never really interested me because it always felt a bit of a letdown. But all that changed when I was fourteen. That year, my dad had an idea. He suggested our family pack up and drive 50 miles north to our small lake cabin (小屋) in northern Michigan to welcome the New Year.
At first, I was hesitant. The cabin was amazing in summer. We would boat, fish, swim, water ski, and float on tubes there. But spending time there in the cold winter sounded boring. I made a face and asked, “What will we do ” Dad said, “There are lots of things! We can ski, walk on snow with special shoes, ice-skate and sled (乘雪橇)! We can play games, sleep late, and see what northern Michigan is like in winter. We can also build a big bonfire (篝火) by the lake, make sweet treats, and then go inside and drink hot chocolate.”
That sounded fun, so I agreed. My brother, Dan, was also interested. A few days after Christmas, Mom, Dad, Dan and I got in our red car and started driving. After five hours, I fell asleep. In my mind, I pictured what the cabin would look like. The tree branches would be covered in snow and ice. The lake might seem bigger without boats. I hoped the sky would be as bright blue as in summer.
Hours later, as the sun was going down, we finally reached the cabin. We ran to the door, but Dad couldn’t open the lock. It was frozen. Mom and I drove to the local stores to ask for help while Dad and Dan continued to fight the lock. Unluckily, this was Sunday and the stores were closed, so no locksmith (锁匠) would help us until the next morning.
It was after 7:00 pm and the temperature was dropping fast. We needed a Plan B.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

47.【答案】Dad grabbed a big rock and broke through the kitchen window. We quickly climbed inside, shivering from the cold. Mom lit the fireplace, and soon the cabin was warm and cozy. We made hot chocolate and shared stories, laughing at our unexpected adventure. The next morning, a locksmith arrived and fixed the lock, and our New Year’s celebration officially began.
Over the next few days, we did all the things Dad had planned. We skied on the snowy hills, ice-skated on the frozen lake, and built a massive snowman. In the evenings, we gathered around the bonfire, roasting marshmallows and enjoying the winter sky.
