During 20 years of working at his family’s supermarket, José Luis-Reig, known as Pep, never gave a thought to the world of academia(学术界). It was only when visiting the classrooms of universities with his two teenage daughters that he suddenly felt himself at home among ‘the atmosphere of learning’.
After school Pep had intended to study biology but was called on to help run the family business instead. When he was at school, he developed a reputation for helping others and so was invited onto the local radio, where the presenter said. “You’re like a young psychologist(心理学家).”
Pep was no stranger to change. The family business had originally been a sawmill(锯木厂). But when Pep, then 27, was asked if he wanted to take over, he decided to change the mill into the town’s first supermarket.
One day in the shop, the radio presenter’s comment came back to him. After running the idea past his family, he applied to a university in Palma to study psychology and, aged 46, was accepted.
“I had to get used to being much older than the other students.” he says. “But I ended up helping the others because I’d had more life experience.” Pep came top of his year and impressed his tutors(导师)so much that he was offered a job researching and teaching. Now 52, and still in the job. He adds, “My only regret is not having done it earlier.”

An hour’s extra sleep a night can shave 270 calories off people’s daily diets, new research suggests—the equivalent of around three chocolate digestive biscuits. Over three years, this could lead to a weight loss of 26 pounds—simply by sleeping more, the researchers said.
A team from the University of Chicago wanted to look at how sleep interacts with obesity and so carried out a clinical trial with 80 adults. Writing in the journal Jama Internal Medicine, they found that young, overweight adults who habitually slept fewer than 6.5 hours a night were able to add an extra 1.2 hours of sleep per night after undergoing counselling to improve their sleeping habits.
The results showed that getting more sleep reduced people’s overall intake by an average of 270 calories per day, with some people consuming 500 fewer calories. Dr Esra Tasali, from the University of Chicago’s sleep centre, said the study had not intended to look at weight loss.
“But even within just two weeks, we have quantified evidence showing a decrease in caloric intake and a negative energy balance—caloric intake is less than calories burned.” she said. “If healthy sleep habits are kept over longer period. this would lead to clinically important weight loss over time. Many people are working hard to find ways to decrease their caloric intake to lose weight—well, just by sleeping more, you may be able to reduce it considerably.
The study did not attempt to restrict people’s diets. Instead, they slept in their own beds, tracked their sleep with wearable devices, and otherwise followed a normal lifestyle without any instructions on diet or exercise. Dr Tasali said that limiting the use of devices such as mobile phones before bedtime helped people get more sleep. She added. “We saw that after just a single sleep counselling session. participants could change their bedtime habits enough to lead to an increase in sleep time.”
8.Why did the researchers carry out the study
A.To find how to reduce weight. B.To know the proper sleep time.
C.To learn about healthy sleep habits. D.To study the link between sleep and obesity.
9.What’s Dr Tasali’s attitude to the findings of the study
A.Doubtful. B.Confident. C.Negative. D.Ambiguous.
10.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.Participants should go on a restricted diet and do more exercise.
B.Limiting the use of digital devices is the best way to get enough sleep.
C.Participants tracked their sleep without disturbing their normal lifestyle.
D.A single sleep counselling session is useless for participants to change.
11.What’s the best title of the text
A.A Strange Way to Lose Your Weight
B.Young and Overweight Adults Need More Sleep
C.Forming a Regular Sleep Habit Is Good for Your Health
D.Cut 270 Calories by Sleeping for an Extra Hour Every Night
Despite the fact that there has never been so much wealth or so many wealthy people in the world, many of the world’s poor people still live in material and energy poverty. Could you and I cut back on our consumption (消耗) so as to make some space for others to increase theirs
I am sure we could. But, unfortunately, everything about our economic systems is set up to make us believe and behave otherwise. The default (默认) mindset is that there is nothing wrong with wanting ever newer and more expensive things as long as we can afford them.
Look around you for a moment. No society anywhere before lived like this. Further, since our spending must necessarily be someone else’s income, we tell ourselves that we actually make the world a better place every time we buy another pair of shoes or trade in a car for the latest model. And that’s the tug (拉) of war that plays itself out cruelly in our lives, as one side of our age cries out “less”, and from the other side comes the answering cry “more”.
Of course, wanting to live a better life is deeply ingrained in human nature. Otherwise, we would never have generated the progress that has brought us to our present station.
But now we should think deeply about how and why we consume.
After all, even the earliest thinkers in the history of economic—including Adam Smith—thought, having more does not always translate into being happier. Evidence shows that many people in the developing world, despite being hard-up, report being just as happy as those in the materially rich societies of the West.
So what now The answer, perhaps, is to try to be rich in the enjoyment of things, not in the accumulation (堆积) of them. A pair of good shoes, lightly creased (起皱) but also carefully polished (擦亮) once a month a meal cooked at home instead of a trip to McDonald’s—such as these lie our act of saving from the virus of compulsive (强迫性的) consumption.
12.What can we infer from the first two paragraphs
A.People tend to buy things unreasonably.
B.People refuse to cut down on consumption.
C.People all face material and energy poverty.
D.People believe in political and economic systems.
13.What does the underlined word “ingrained” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Held. B.Rooted. C.Changed. D.Possessed.
14.What does the author suggest
A.Trying to be rich. B.The more, the better.
C.Enjoying what we have. D.Focusing on the compulsive consumption.
15.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A.Entertainment. B.Health. C.Education. D.Economy.
First impressions are important, but everyone has an off day or makes mistakes in social situations. It might be more of a challenge to change how you are perceived. 16
Apologize. If your first meeting was affected by some type of mistake, reach out and apologize. It shows that you are aware of your mistake and willing to take steps to overcome it. 17
Explain what happened. You don’t want to make excuses. But it can be helpful to provide an honest explanation for why your first meeting went poorly. You might explain that you were nervous, that you weren’t feeling well, that you were distracted, or that you were feeling stressed about something unrelated. 18 It makes the other person better empathize (有同感) with your situation.
Suggest another meeting. If you won’t see them in another setting, ask if you can have another opportunity to let them get to see the real you. 19 For example, don’t continue pursuing a potential romantic partner after they have told you they are not interested. Don’t take it personally. Instead, see it as a learning opportunity and try to apply those lessons when you meet someone new.
20 If you do get another opportunity to overcome a poor first impression, make sure you are honest and consistent in your future interactions. Let the other person know you completely in terms of context and situation. If it’s a second date, let them see the qualities that make you a great romantic partner, such as warmth, kindness, humour, and attentiveness (周到).
A.Let them see the real you.
B.Show interest in others.
C.Smiling, for example, can help express warmth and interest.
D.No matter the cause, an honest explanation may be helpful.
E.But there are still things you can do to overcome a bad first impression.
F.Then you can improve the impression the other person has of you.
G.However, be willing to respect the other person’s request if they decline your offer.

It was the golden autumn when a young musician was touring all around the world. The moment he arrived at a small town lying along a clear and sweet river, a feeling of ease and comfort embraced him. The peaceful night fell, appealing to the young musician. He was casually (随便地) out walking and passing a cottage with the door open, when he heard someone inside playing the piano. Though it didn’t go smoothly, he was sure that it was just one of his compositions.
The musician stopped to listen, but the music stopped too. He got closer and overheard a conversation going—“It is too difficult! I can never play it well by myself! I’ve only heard someone else play it several times. It’s far from enough. How I wish I would gain a chance to attend a concert! What if it is played by the musician himself ”—a girl murmured (低语) and sighed. A man continued, “I can’t agree more, but we can’t afford to attend a concert. We are so poor.” “Sorry, Brother,” explained the girl, “Please let it go. I didn’t mean to. I was just kidding.” Though she tried to keep a calm tone, both the brother and the young musician could tell how much she wished to hear a real musician play it properly.
The young musician pushed the door and got into the house. With a single candle, a man was making shoes while a young lady was sitting at the piano. Nothing inviting was in sight except the old piano. What was unexpected was that the beautiful young lady was blind. The brother was too astonished to pronounce a word. Kind but embarrassed, he smiled at the stranger.
The musician smiled and nodded, approaching the piano slowly. Nervous and frightened, the brother dropped the shoe he was working on, jumped to his feet and rushed to protect his sister. “What are you doing Keep off my sister!” The young lady was alarmed at the noise. She got off the piano, with head hanging and shoulders shaking.

空处位于首段段尾,承接上文,引出本文主题,根据前文“First impressions are important, but everyone has an off day or makes mistakes in social situations. It might be more of a challenge to change how you are perceived.(第一印象很重要,但每个人都有不顺心的时候,或者在社交场合犯错的时候。改变别人对你的看法可能更有挑战性)”可知,E项“But there are still things you can do to overcome a bad first impression.(但是你仍然可以做一些事情来克服糟糕的第一印象)”和上文构成转折关系,并引出本文主题,克服糟糕的第一印象。故选E项。
If your first meeting was affected by some type of mistake, reach out and apologize. It shows that you are aware of your mistake and willing to take steps to overcome it.(道歉。如果你的第一次会面受到了某种错误的影响,那就主动去道歉。这表明你意识到自己的错误,并愿意采取措施来克服它)”可知,本段讲述主动道歉,改正错误来改变糟糕的第一印象,所以F项“Then you can improve the impression the other person has of you.(然后你可以改善别人对你的印象)”是前文方法的结果,符合文意。故选F项。
18.根据前文“Explain what happened. You don’t want to make excuses. But it can be helpful to provide an honest explanation for why your first meeting went poorly. You might explain that you were nervous, that you weren’t feeling well, that you were distracted, or that you were feeling stressed about something unrelated.(解释发生了什么。你不想找借口。但如果你能诚实地解释为什么你的第一次会面不顺利,那就很有帮助了。你可能会解释说你很紧张,你感觉不舒服,你心烦意乱,或者你对一些不相关的事情感到压力)”可知,本段主题是解释发生了什么,所以D项“No matter the cause, an honest explanation may be helpful.(不管是什么原因,一个诚实的解释可能会有所帮助)”符合本段主题,其中explanation为同词复现。故选D项。
19.根据前文“Suggest another meeting. If you won’t see them in another setting, ask if you can have another opportunity to let them get to see the real you.(建议另一次会面。如果你不想在其他场合见到他们,那就问他们是否有机会让他们看到真实的你)”以及后文“For example, don’t continue pursuing a potential romantic partner after they have told you they are not interested. Don’t take it personally.(例如,在一个潜在的浪漫伴侣告诉你他们对你不感兴趣之后,不要继续追求他们。不要往心里去)”可知,前文提到请求另一次机会,但是后文举例说如果被拒绝,就不要继续,所以空处应提到这点,所以G项“However, be willing to respect the other person’s request if they decline your offer.(然而,如果对方拒绝你的提议,你要尊重对方的要求)”承接上文,引出下文举例,符合文意。故选G项。
20.空处位于段首,为本段中心句,根据后文“If you do get another opportunity to overcome a poor first impression, make sure you are honest and consistent in your future interactions. Let the other person know you completely in terms of context and situation.(如果你确实得到了另一个机会来克服糟糕的第一印象,确保你在未来的互动中诚实和一致。让对方完全了解你的背景和情况)”可知,本段主要讲述展示真正的自己,所以A项“Let them see the real you.(让他们看到真实的你)”符合本段主题。故选A项。
21.C 22.A 23.D 24.D 25.C 26.A 27.A 28.D 29.B 30.C 31.B 32.C 33.B 34.C 35.A

Farming and New Technologies
In recent years, an increasing number of new technologies have been applied in farming. Despite all inevitable risks, these breakthroughs in technologies do promote agricultural development.
On the one hand, with the application of various advanced technologies, varying from automatic systems to AI integration in agricultural field, the farming efficiency and productivity are shooting up, enabling farmers to break away from tedious physical workloads. On the other hand, what concerns the public is that the long-term effects of new technologies may do harm to the environment and human health. Furthermore, the escalating unemployment level and population migration issues due to the automatic farming process should be fully taken into consideration.
