To avoid humans, mountain lions in the Greater Los Angeles area are changing their activity patterns. The big cats living near areas where humans hike, run and cycle are becoming increasingly more nocturnal (夜行的). The findings are detailed in a study published in the journal Biological Conservation.
“People are increasingly enjoying recreating in nature, which is fantastic,” study co-author Ellie Bolas said in a statement. “This flexibility we see in mountain lion activity is what allows us to share these natural areas together.”
Mountain lions are top carnivorous predators (食肉捕食者) that eat a wide variety of meat including deer, wild pigs and rabbits. While mountain lions rarely attack humans, they can still be dangerous to hikers, runners, or cyclists who spend time in their habitats. The mountain lions in the Greater Los Angeles area face numerous challenges — busy roadways where they’re often hit by cars, the threat of wildfires, harmful chemicals and disturbed habitats. Generally, mountain lions prefer to avoid humans altogether. But in an urban area home to more than 18 million people, the natural spots where mountain lions live are also heavily used by recreationists.
“These results are really important in that they show how humans may be affecting wildlife in less obvious ways than killing them with vehicles,” Seth Riley, a study co-author, said in a statement. “The study also continues to drive home the amazing fact that a population of large field predators wanders in one of the largest urban areas in the world. That would not be possible if mountain lions weren’t able to adjust to human activity.”
However, it’s not only up to the mountain lions. People have a role in helping protect themselves, their pets, and mountain lions by being aware of the high time for mountain lion activity. Be careful if you have to drive at night, when mountain lions living in populated areas are more likely to be active.
24.What is Ellie Bolas’ attitude toward people’s recreation in nature
A.Unclear. B.Doubtful. C.Intolerant. D.Supportive.
25.What can we learn about mountain lions in the Greater Los Angeles area from paragraph 3
A.Their habitats are undisturbed. B.They are under threat.
C.They tend to get close to humans. D.Their attacks on humans are common.
26.What do Seth Riley’s words suggest about mountain lions’ adaption
A.It displays their disastrous impact. B.It is a result of human conservation efforts.
C.It is key to their coexistence with humans. D.It has led to the decrease of human activity.
27.What is the author’s advice for humans
A.Enjoy activity in populated areas. B.Train their pets to get active at night.
C.Avoid encounters with mountain lions. D.Drive quickly to pass by mountain lions.

An AI early-warning system that predicts which patients are at risk of deteriorating (恶化) while in hospital was associated with a decrease in unanticipated deaths, a new study says. The study, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, found a 26 percent reduction in non-palliative (非姑息性的) deaths among patients in St. Michael’s Hospital’s general internal medicine unit when the AI tool was used.
The technology called CHARTwatch continuously analyzed more than 100 different pieces of information about each patient in the unit. That includes information such as age and medical history, as well as measurements such as vital signs, blood pressure, heart rate and lab test results. “It gathers all of that information to make a prediction about their risk of becoming more seriously ill going forward and then it updates its model predictions every hour based on how all of those things are changing over time,” Verma said.
When the AI tool predicted that a patient was deteriorating, it sent an alert to physicians and nurses, prompting them to quickly intervene. If the clinician agreed with the AI prediction after examining the patient, necessary action was taken. That included transferring the patient to the ICU, giving them antibiotics for serious infections or monitoring the patient more frequently.
If a patient’s death were inevitable, they would receive end-of-life care earlier than they might have otherwise, easing their suffering, Verma said.
Those early-warning signals are important in busy hospital settings where each nurse or doctor is caring for many patients who are getting multiple lab tests, medical imaging and other interventions that could change their prognosis (预后). Verma said, “Humans cannot monitor 20 to 30 patients simultaneously all the time, but they can act more promptly in response to deteriorating patients’ conditions with the aid of these signals.”
Ross Mitchell, who is the Alberta Health Services chair in AI in health, said the research was “very encouraging.” “This specific technology needs to be studied in a broader sense. It needs to be deployed in more hospitals across Canada so that we can get more than one hospital involved,” said Mitchell.
28.How does the AI tool CHARTwatch work
A.It alerts staff to vital sign changes.
B.It offers end-of-life care to patients.
C.It analyzes data to predict deterioration risk.
D.It moves patients to the ICU based on predictions.
29.Why are early-warning signals important in busy hospitals
A.They can enhance diagnosis accuracy greatly.
B.They can reduce the staff's workload completely.
C.They can alert on condition worsening promptly.
D.They can ensure appropriate responses generally.
30.What is Ross Mitchell’s attitude towards CHARTwatch
A.Skeptical.
B.Favorable.
C.Dismissive.
D.Indifferent.
31.What is a suitable title for the text
A.Al Technology Improves Hospital Care Services.
B.Al Early-Warning System Reduces Hospital Deaths.

There’s a whiteboard on the refrigerator in du Plessises’ kitchen the couple uses to plan dinners. But with two young children, full-time jobs and the nearest supermarket20 minutes away, figuring out what to eat can sometimes be challenging. To lighten the load, Mr. du Plessis regularly uses a grocery delivery service.
America’s appetite for online grocery sales soared more than 50%, from $62 billion in 2019 to $96 billion in 2020, according to the Food and Drug Administration. One in five consumers now has groceries delivered to their door at least once a month. By 2029, it is estimated that the market will be worth $455 billion. Meanwhile, there’s been a steep increase in demand for restaurant takeout. Meal kits which come with premeasured ingredients are also experiencing strong growth.
At the same time, food production and transportation make up as much as 1/3 of a typical US household’s annual contribution to climate change-inducing emissions. The Department of Agriculture estimates that 30% of food produced is wasted. So, changing consumer behavior to minimize waste and reduce transportation could have a significant impact on the overall pollution.
In 2022, researchers from the University of Michigan modeled a single 36-item grocery cart to compare greenhouse emissions from an e-commerce grocery delivery and a traditional trip to the store to get the same items. They found that using an electric vehicle to pick up groceries could cut emissions by as much as half, compared to a gas-powered vehicle. They also found that home delivery could be an even better option. That’s because with a delivery vehicle, orders are oftenclustered, with a driver dropping off not just your groceries, but also hitting neighbors during the same run.
When it comes to delivery services, Mr. du Plessis theorizes that because this guy’s literally delivering two burgers and like two sodas, such options would have a big footprint. “For the volume of food compared to the amount of carbon emitted, yeah, the equation doesn’t quite add up.”
32.What is the first paragraph about
A.Meal planning challenges.
B.Time-saving meal strategies.
C.Benefits of grocery delivery.
D.The du Plessis family' s lifestyle.
33.What do paragraphs 2 and 3 suggest about grocery delivery services
A.They bring about disorder in commercial competition
B.They arouse a pressing need to change delivery mode.
C.They bring attention to goods quality concerns.
D.They offer convenience for meal preparation.
34.What does the word “clustered” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Grouped together.
B.Separated individually.
C.Delivered randomly.
D.Packed tightly.
35.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A.Innovations in Food Delivery
B.The Challenges of Meal Planning
C.The Rise of Online Grocery Shopping
D.Environmental Effects of Food Delivery

The year her parents decided to break up, Alice began spending a lot of time at the Polka Cafe. It was the only place she could really think, and her mother didn’t seem to mind that she passed much of the summer there.
Two important things had happened before summer began. The first, of course, was that her father had moved out of their house, and the second was that Sarah was no longer her best friend. Alice couldn’t be sure how things had gotten so bad. They had gotten in a fight at school shortly after her parents announced they would no longer be together.
When her friends noticed her dad stopped dropping her off at school each morning, Alice always explained, “My dad is away on business.” She didn’t invite them over to play anymore, either. She made a lot of excuses not to hang out with anyone else. “I have other plans,” she told Sarah.
One day, while they were walking home from school, Sarah said to Alice in a rather annoyed tone, “Alice, what’s going on Why won’t you talk to me ”
Alice pretended she hadn’t heard Sarah, and continued to walk. She didn’t want to talk to Sarah about this right now. She didn’t want to talk to anyone about this.
“I’m serious, Alice. My mom told me what’s going on,” Sarah said. “I know about your parents.” This stopped Alice in her tracks. It was true they lived in a small town, and secrets didn’t stay secrets for long. But Alice had hoped it would not get out or at least stay hidden long enough for her to figure out how to bring it up. She was embarrassed and hurt. She wanted to tell Sarah when she wanted to.
Alice exploded in anger. “How dare you claim to know anything!” she shouted. “You’re a terrible friend. I never want to speak to you again!”

W:In the UK, changes are coming to how junk food is advertised. Starting in October 2025, online ads for unhealthy food and drinks will be banned. On TV, these ads will only be allowed to be played after 9 p.m. This new rule aims to address childhood weight issues. Statistics from the 2022-2023 school year show that over 20 percent of children aged 4 to 5 years old in England were overweight.
This number increases in older children starting middle school, with more than 36 percent being too fat.
The UK government thinks that seeing fewer ads for junk food will help kids eat better. Usman Ahmad Mushtaq, the UK’s deputy health minister, has said that less advertising could lead to healthier eating habits among children.
However, not everyone agrees with this plan. Some people think that banning ads doesn’t address the real reasons kids want junk food. Dina Rabie from the London School of Economics suggested that children’s experiences with junk food influence their choices more than ads do. She believes teaching kids about healthy eating is more important.

根据第二段““People are increasingly enjoying recreating in nature, which is fantastic,” study co-author Ellie Bolas said in a statement. (该研究的合著者Ellie Bolas在一份声明中说:“人们越来越喜欢在大自然中休闲,这太棒了。”)”可推知Ellie Bolas对人们在大自然中娱乐的态度是支持的,故选D。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段“The mountain lions in the Greater Los Angeles area face numerous challenges — busy roadways where they’re often hit by cars, the threat of wildfires, harmful chemicals and disturbed habitats. Generally, mountain lions prefer to avoid humans altogether. But in an urban area home to more than 18 million people, the natural spots where mountain lions live are also heavily used by recreationists.
根据第四段““These results are really important in that they show how humans may be affecting wildlife in less obvious ways than killing them with vehicles,” Seth Riley, a study co-author, said in a statement. “The study also continues to drive home the amazing fact that a population of large field predators wanders in one of the largest urban areas in the world. That would not be possible if mountain lions weren’t able to adjust to human activity.”
根据最后一段“Be careful if you have to drive at night, when mountain lions living in populated areas are more likely to be active. (如果你必须在晚上开车,要小心,因为生活在人口密集地区的美洲狮更有可能活跃。)”可知作者对人类的建议是避免遇到美洲狮。故选C。

30.推理判断题。根据最后一段的“Ross Mitchell, who is the Alberta Health Services chair in AI in health, said the research was “very encouraging.”(艾伯塔省卫生服务部门人工智能健康主席罗斯·米切尔(Ross Mitchell)表示,这项研究“非常令人鼓舞”。)”以及““This specific technology needs to be studied in a broader sense. It needs to be deployed in more hospitals across Canada so that we can get more than one hospital involved,” said Mitchell.(“这种特定的技术需要在更广泛的意义上进行研究。它需要在加拿大更多的医院部署,这样我们才能让不止一家医院参与进来。”)”可知,Ross Mitchell对CHARTwatch技术的态度是非常支持的,他认为这项技术非常有前途,需要在更广泛的范围内进行研究,并在更多的医院中应用。故选B。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段的“An AI early-warning system that predicts which patients are at risk of deteriorating (恶化) while in hospital was associated with a decrease in unanticipated deaths,a new study says.(一项新的研究表明,一种人工智能预警系统可以预测哪些患者在住院期间有恶化的风险,这与意外死亡的减少有关。)”

根据第三段“At the same time, food production and transportation make up as much as 1/3 of a typical US household’s annual contribution to climate change-inducing emissions. 67.【答案】
Now it was August, and Alice sat in the Polka Café, lost in thought. The smell of freshly baked bread and the warmth of the café were comforting, but her mind was filled with regret. She missed Sarah. As she stirred her tea absentmindedly, Sarah’s words from that day echoed in her mind. Alice realized Sarah wasn’t trying to hurt her; she was just concerned. With a deep sigh, Alice decided it was time to mend things. The next day, summoning all her courage, Alice called Sarah and asked to meet. To her relief, Sarah agreed.
“I’m sorry too for having shouted at you,” said Alice. Sitting under their old oak tree, Alice confessed everything. She spoke about her parents’ divorce, her feelings of shame, and how she had pushed Sarah away unintentionally. Tears welled up in Sarah’s eyes. “I only wanted to be there for you,” Sarah said softly. They hugged, and Alice felt a weight lift off her chest. That day, they promised to always be honest with each other. For the first time all summer, Alice felt a glimmer of hope and the comfort of true friendship.
