There are several ways to improve our English writing skills, such as writing a diary, doing a lot of reading and keeping some good writings by heart, among which writing a diary is what I like pared with other forms of writing,a diary is shorter and takes less time.Besides,it can help us form the habit of thinking in English and we can express ourselves freely. What’s more,we can practice using what we’ve learnt in class. In a word,we can get much benefit by making it a rule to write an English diary before going to bed.

A
Laptop(便携式) computers are popular all of the world.People use them on trains, airplanes,in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.
Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allow students to do schoolwork at anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1,500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake,a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use
e-mails to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the more important of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer lab. They can work with it at home,in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees—anywhere at all.
Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptops use in higher education, such as colleges and universities,is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries, and other resources. State higher-education officials are studying how laptops can help students.State officials are testing laptop programs at other universities, too.
At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use the computers. The laptops will allow teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said,“Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we are giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything.”

The other day I heard a few local musicians talking:
“I hate all the terrible pianos in this town.I hate that rubbish they play on the radio. They can’t even understand a bit of music.”
“I’m never playing in that club again.Too many drunks and nobody listens to us.”
But one younger musician said,“There are a few clubs that book my band a few nights a month, and I’m trying to find other places to play.I’m also looking to book a few summer festivals this year.”
I’ve heard that you are the average of the five people whom you spend the most time with,or to put it another way,you are who your friends are.
Attitudes are important.Whether they’re positive or negative,
they’re rubbing off on you.If you’re around people who complain about lack of work and about other musicians,or blame others, and you play the role of victim, chances are you will start to as well.So it’s time to take a look at the people you call “friends”.
This is an easy exercise:Make a list of the people who you hang out with, and simply stop spending time with the negative people on your list.Set a new standard(标准) for yourself and don’t become friends with people who fall below that standard.
Keep successful people around you and your own chances for success will be much better.Ask them how they do it.Ask if they will help you get the work you’re looking for,or maybe give you some advice to help you on your career path.

We walked in so quietly that the nurse at the desk didn’t even lift her eyes from the book.Mum pointed at a big chair by the door and I knew she wanted me to sit down. While I watched mouth open in surprise,Mum took off her hat and coat and gave them to me to hold. She walked quietly to the small room by the lift and took out a wet mop.She pushed the mop past the desk and as the nurse looked up, Mum nodded and said,“Very dirty floors.”
“Yes,I’m glad they’ve finally decided to clean them,” the nurse answered. She looked at Mum strangely and said,“But aren’t you working late ”
Mum just pushed harder, each swipe(拖一下) of the mop taking her farther and farther down the hall.I watched until she was out of sight and the nurse had turned back to writing in the big book.
After a long time Mum came back. Her eyes were shining. She quickly put the mop back and took my hand.As we turned to go out of the door,Mum bowed politely to the nurse and said,“Thank you.”
Outside,Mum told me,“Dagmar is fine.No fever.”
“You saw her,Mum ”

Choosing the Right Resolution
Millions of Americans began 2014 with the same resolution they started 2013 with,a goal of losing weight. However, setting weight loss as a goal is a mistake.
To reach our goal of losing weight—the output,we need to control what we eat—the input(输入).That is,we tend to care about the output but not to control the input. This is a bad way to construct goals. The alternative is to focus your resolution on the input.Instead of resolving to lose weight, try an actionable resolution:“I’ll stop having dessert for lunch,” or “I’ll walk every day for 20 minutes.” Creating a goal that focuses on well—specified input will likely be more effective than concentrating on the outcome.
Recently a new science behind incentives(激励),including in education, has been discussed. For example, researcher Roland Fryer wanted to see what works best in motivating children to do better in school. In some cases,he gave students incentives based on input, like reading certain books, while in others, the incentives were based on output, like results on exams. His main finding was that incentives increased achievement when based on input but had no effect when based on output.Fryer’s conclusion was that the incentives for inputs might be more effective because students do not know how to do better on an exam, aside from general rules like “study harder”.
Reading certain books,on the other hand,is a well-set task over which they have much more control.
As long as you have direct control over your goal, you have a much higher chance of success. And it’s easier to start again if you fail, because you know exactly what you need to do.
If you want to cut down on your spending,a good goal would be making morning coffee at home instead of going to a cafe, for example. This is a well-specified action-based goal for which you can measure your success easily.Spending less money isn’t a goal because it’s too general.Similarly,if you want to spend more time with your family, don’t stop with this general wish.Think about an actionable habit that you could adopt and stick to,like a family movie night every Wednesday.
In the long run, these new goals could become a habit.
( )12.The writer thinks that setting weight loss as a goal is a mistake because .
A.it is hard to achieve for most Americans
B.it is focused too much on the result
C.it is dependent on too many things
D.it is based on actionable decisions
( )13.In Roland Fryer’s research, some students did better than the others because .
A.they obeyed all the general rules
B.they paid more attention to exams
C.they were motivated by their classmates
D.they were rewarded for reading some books
根据题干关键词“some students did better than the others ”定位在文中第三段。D选项对应第三段第五句话“Fryer’s conclusion was that the incentives for inputs might be more effective because students do not know how to do better on an exam”,所以D正确。]
( )14.According to the writer, which of the following statements is a good goal
A.I’ll give up dessert.
B.I’ll study harder.
C.I’ll cut down my expenses.
D.I’ll spend more time with my family.
故选A。]
( )15.The writer strongly believes that we should .
A.develop good habits and focus on the outcome
B.be optimistic about final goals and stick to them
C.pick specific actions that can be turned into good habit
D.set ambitious goals that can balance the input and output

16.B [根据there are several ways to handle things.

19.D [根据后文It’s much easier to excuse yourself to get back to your work than if you try to get someone out of your space even after explaining how busy you are,此句中it指代前文don’t do it in your own office,也就是说此段中作者认为比起在自己的办公室解释,不在办公室更容易点。故选D。]

9 (leave) to dig,the rabbit dug a tunnel right to where the dog had been lying all the time. There he found the carrot and the bone.
This is how the dog lost the game.He had come to the right place at the very 10 (begin) but failed to find the bone because he only complained and didn’t try at all.
