It was the beginning of a new year, and as the “smarty-pants” of my peers, I was placed in the best class, where most of the chatterboxes were. Sadly, I was not one of them. Most of the time, my mouth was zipped very tightly and I hardly had any friends who appreciated my silence.
Thus, the incident that happened three months ago was both shocking and surprising. There was a speech competition three months later, and our school was to choose a representative from the best class of our level. The selection was left to our strict English teacher, Mrs Lee, whom I feared the most because she hardly ever smiled at us. Due to her high expectations, all of us presumed she would pick one of the biggest mouths in our class. Strangely though, she declared, “Jane shall be the one who will join in the competition.”
There was silence in our usually-noisy class. My jaw dropped as I drew a deep breath awkwardly. Me A speech competition I rubbed my eyes to ensure I was not dreaming.
“You have to write a speech today and show it to me tomorrow, Jane,” Mrs Lee instructed, thereby breaking the ice. The next day, I showed my speech to Mrs Lee. Reading it, she nodded in satisfaction and smiled at me for the first time. In the sweetest voice I had ever heard, she praised me, “Wonderful work! Why don’t you read it to the class ”
Swallowing hard and taking a deep breath, I began reciting my essay with the worst pronunciation anyone had ever heard. The entire class burst into laughter as they shouted discouraging words, saying that they should have been in my place instead. Hot tears stung my eyes as I rushed back to my seat, weeping silently in embarrassment, while Mrs Lee criticized the class for such rude behaviour.

On a freezing cold December morning, I led Martin to the third-grade classroom I was in charge of. He lowered his head, which I thought was due to his shyness. Also, I noticed him wearing a pair of shoes apparently outgrowing his shoe size. “Maybe he comes from a financially disadvantaged family,” I thought to myself.
However, it was also hard to understand Martin’s behavior. When asked to make a self- introduction on the platform, he simply spelled his name, leaving the other students confused. Besides, Martin’s study habits and skills were nowhere to be seen. Unable to recognize some English letters, he even failed to write a short essay according to given instructions.
Therefore, I wondered whether a special school teaching kids with autism (自闭症) was more suitable for him. I looked through his previous grade reports, only to find that his academic performances in the first grade were great. To figure out what happened to him, I decided to visit his former school and communicate with the headteacher. I learned that Martin’s mom had a mental disorder after getting divorced last year. Now, the little boy had to take care of both himself and his mom. Since Martin’s brainpower was normal, he would stay put in my class.
I had never encountered a student like Martin before. It was a headache to help him fit into and catch up with his classmates. I had dreamed about teaching, so I hated it when the idea of giving up such a student lingered (萦绕) vividly in my mind.
Two days later, it was Martin’s turn to clean the blackboard. Rising to his feet and ready to walk to the platform, he was tripped by one student on purpose. Suddenly, he couldn’t resist weeping alone. Contrary to what I assumed, no one lent him a helping hand. I sent Martin to the infirmary (医务室) and screamed at the others that Martin’s difference was a reason for being treated warmly and nicely.

【典例03】(24-25高三上·甘肃临夏·期末)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Feeling the warmth of my feverish body, I clung to Mummy’s hand as we made our way to the doctor’s office. I liked seeing the doctor because he always gave me a lollipop (棒棒糖). I was going to ask him for a red lollipop today because that was my favorite.
The sun was shining brightly, casting a golden glow on the world outside. I remembered crossing the road and thinking to myself what a lovely day to be outside. Then we went inside to see the doctor and the big woman at the reception desk asked us Mummy’s name and my name and then told us to sit down on the chairs next to the door leading into the corridor. My cough echoed through the reception area, drawing concerned looks from the other patients.
I knew the routine well; we’d been here enough times before. But today, the prospect of sitting still was more than I could bear. So I pulled away from Mummy’s hand and I ran over to the big fish tank that was against the wall near to the door. I watched all the fish swimming up and down and then back up again and I tapped my finger against the glass because I wanted the big goldfish to come and follow my hand or my finger.
For a brief moment, I forgot about my fever and cough, and the world outside the fish tank ceased to exist. It was just me and the fish, a simple interaction that brought me a strange sense of comfort. Then after a little bit Mummy called me over to her.
The door to the doctor’s room opened and the nurse called my name and I turned around and my mummy stood up. She took my hand and we went in through the door. I suddenly started to feel a bit worried, mainly because I remembered that Mummy had told me I would be getting an injection (注射) today and that I had to be brave.

“Nooo!” screamed Asha as she saw a huge pimple (痘) on her nose. She didn’t have time to cover it as she was running late to school. She quickly got into her school bus just in time. As soon as she entered, kids started laughing. Nobody was willing to make her sit beside them. Even Anita, her bus mate acted a bit differently with her.
Asha was lost in thoughts. A new thought popped in her mind every second. Once she thought “Great! As if homework and exams were not enough, I have to worry about my pimple as well.” The next minute another thought popped in her mind. “I am tired of using that face wash. I still wonder how I agreed to use that horrible thing! How can...” Mr. Shetty, the bus driver said “Asha, do you want to miss the class ” Asha was so lost in her thoughts that she did not even notice that everybody had got down the bus except her.
She did not want to step into the campus. She thought, “What will my teachers think What will my friends think ” After some time, she gathered courage and entered her class expecting that she would be laughed at.
It was a very hard day at school for her. As soon as she got home, she hugged her mother tightly. As she did so she felt all her worries were not even a dot in front of the warm and loving hug.
Later that day, she went to the supermarket with her mother. While coming back she heard people commenting the pimple on her nose. A small child shouted, “Daddy! My cherry is on her nose! Get it for me.” She heard some boys saying something in soft quiet voice, “If she would have been in our school, she would definitely be chosen as the joker in the dance.” Asha wondered why people cared so much about her appearance.

Liam Carter was not your average 15-year-old. While most of his fellows at Maplewood Heights were crazy about the latest rock bands and popular social media trends, Liam spent his free time watching documentaries about human anatomy (解剖学) and studying first aid techniques. He loved learning about the human body, how it worked, and, more importantly, how to help it recover.
His fascination, however, set him apart. Many of the other teens in the neighborhood thought he was strange and didn’t invite him to their hangouts. Liam often overheard them laughing about his interests and calling him“Doctor Carter”. It really hurt Liam. He couldn’t help but wonder if there was something wrong with him. Why couldn’t he just enjoy the same things as everyone else
One summer evening, Liam was in his room, rewatching a documentary on emergency medical responses, when he heard shouting from his neighbor’s house. Curious, he ran outside and saw Mrs. Thompson, the elderly woman who lived next door, crying for help. Her 10-year-old grandson, Ethan, had collapsed in the yard while playing soccer.
Liam’s heart pounded as he ran over. The ambulance hadn’t arrived yet and Ethan was lying on the ground, unconscious (无意识的) and not breathing. Mrs. Thompson was panicked, shaking him and yelling his name, but Ethan didn’t respond.
“Step back, I know what to do!” Liam said, his voice surprisingly steady despite the chaos.
Mrs. Thompson hesitated but moved aside, tears streaming down her face. Liam knelt beside Ethan, quickly assessing the situation. From what he could tell, Ethan was likely experiencing a heart emergency— something Liam had seen demonstrated in one of his documentaries.
Without wasting a moment, Liam began performing CPR (心肺复苏). He placed his hands firmly on Ethan’s chest and started chest compressions (按压), counting aloud to keep the rhythm steady. His training came flooding back to him: 30 compressions followed by two rescue breaths.

【典例06】(24-25高三上·辽宁辽阳·期末)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Logan Kavaluskis was just a little kid when he first fell in love with dogs. He would spend hours watching them play in the park, their tails wagging and tongues sticking out in pure joy. But there was one dog that caught his eye more than any other: a Boston terrier (波士顿狗) with a cute face and bright, expressive eyes.
Logan’s father, Joe, noticed his son’s fascination with the little dog and made a mental note. He knew that Logan would love to have a pet of his own, but unfortunately, Joe was allergic to dogs. So, for years, Logan had to content himself with soft toy animals and dreams of owning a real, live puppy.
As the years passed, Logan grew older, but his love for dogs never waned. When he was three, his parents gave him a soft toy Boston terrier for his birthday, and he named it Puppers. From that day on, Puppers was his constant companion, accompanying him on every adventure and sleeping with him every night.
But deep down, Logan still longed for a real puppy, one that he could play with and cuddle. He often talked to his father about it, and Joe would listen with a sad smile, knowing that he couldn’t fulfill his son’s wish.
Then, one day, everything changed. Joe was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare and aggressive blood cancer. The family was in deep sorrow, but Joe remained strong, determined to fight the disease and spend as much time as possible with his loved ones.
As his condition worsened, Joe knew that he might not have much time left. He wanted to make sure that his son’s dream of owning a puppy would come true, even if he couldn’t be there to see it. So, Joe asked Melanie, his wife, to make a promise that she would buy Logan a puppy after Joe passed away.
Melanie kept her promise, and a week after Joe’s passing, she told Logan that they had to drive to Midland, Michigan, to pick up something special. Logan had no idea what it was, but he was excited to find out.

【典例07】(24-25高三上·广东汕头·期末)阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
At the age of 30, I resigned to start my own business. I felt like I was on the right path. I was busy making plans happen. For months, I kept myself moving. Even when I wasn’t working, I was thinking about work. There was never enough time, and I was afraid that if I stopped to relax, I might let someone down. But the more I worked, the less I seemed to get done.
When I started to feel really tired, I told myself I just needed to work harder and get more organized. But something was wrong. I was very tired and my body hurt all over. My smart watch kept buzzing (嗡嗡声), telling me my heart was beating too fast. I had tried hard to be healthy — I stopped drinking, changed my diet, and lost weight. I thought things would get better, but they didn’t.
Finally, I went to a doctor. “How’s your stress ” the doctor asked. I didn’t think I was very stressed, but tests showed I had a disease called Graves’ disease, which can get worse because of stress.
The next day, I ran into an old friend, Cindy. We hadn’t seen each other for a while, and Cindy looked at me with concern. “You look tired. I don’t know how you are doing, but you seems to be wearing out.”
“Things have been a bit crazy lately,” I admitted.
“Maybe it’s time to take a break,” Cindy suggested. As we said goodbye, she added, “It was good to see you. You’ve lost weight; make sure you take care of yourself.” She waved and left.
Reflecting on my previous behavior, I realized I had been missing the simple pleasures in life — the little but meaningful things that help me relax and recharge, like bonding with my family, engaging in community activities to help those in need, interacting with friends and visiting my favorite bookstore.
Days later, Cindy called and asked, “There’s a charity event dedicated to helping the left-behind children and elderly people who live alone in our community this weekend. Would you like to go with me and offer your help ”

In the serene morning, our school campus lay bathed in a gentle glow of sunlight. The air was still, with only the occasional chatter of students and the rustle of books breaking the silence. The classrooms were abuzz with activity as students diligently worked on their assignments, their faces lit by the soft light filtering through the windows.
But suddenly, the tranquility was shattered by a violent earthquake. The ground began to shake, sending a shudder through the entire school. The seismic waves were so powerful that they sent a shiver down the spines of every student. Amidst the chaos, a girl named Alice, a fellow member of our class, panicked and fled the classroom in a flash. Her flight was a stark contrast to the complacency of the rest of us who remained seated, unmoved by the rumbling beneath our feet. Yet, as we sat unperturbed, students from other classes streamed out of their classrooms in a panic, their faces etched with fear. The corridor outside our classroom soon filled with the hustle and bustle of fleeing students, their footsteps echoing loudly in the otherwise silent morning.
Suddenly, the school’s broadcast system came to life, its voice echoing through the hallways, instructing everyone to evacuate and gather in the designated area. However, it was soon revealed that this was a mistake, a miscue from the broadcast station that had sent our hearts racing even further. With the all-clear signal, we returned to our seats, trying to regain our composure. The teacher, a pillar of calm in the midst of the commotion, resumed the lesson as if nothing had happened, her voice a soothing balm to our frayed nerves.

Finally, the day of my competition arrived. I felt stressed and nervous again. Mrs Lee held my cold hands and spoke words of encouragement. I immediately gained confidence. When standing on the stage, I threw all my fears aside and began speaking with enthusiasm. 【典例02】(24-25高三上·黑龙江·期末)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【满分范文】
I realized it was high time that I should shoulder my responsibility. The next day, I had a heartfelt chat with Martin at his home. Sensing I was worth trusting, Martin sighed, “Thanks for your kindness. But burdened with huge family pressure, I feel my future will be dark.” In response, I held his hands firmly, convincing him that nothing was impossible with a willing heart. “Let’s fight for a promising future together, shall we ” I continued. He nodded slightly.
Gradually, positive changes were seen in Martin. He was no longer ashamed of his appearance. In classes, with his attention fixed on the Powerpoint slides and textbooks, he handled reading comprehension from scratch, managed to read lengthy texts and voiced his own opinions. During breaks, long gone were the days when Martin had escaped to his inner safe space. Befriending classmates around him, he found they were on the same wavelength. It dawned on me that no matter what problems my students had, I, as a teacher, should try my best to help them out.

When the doctor said I would get an injection, I burst into tears. The thought of the needle made me tremble with fear. Mummy knelt down beside me, her eyes filled with understanding. “It’s okay to be scared, sweetheart,” she whispered. “But remember, the doctor is here to help you stay healthy and strong.” I cried, trying to take in her words, but the fear was still there. The doctor told me that after the injection, I would get to pick my favorite lollipop. With Mummy’s comforting hand on my back, I took a deep breath and nodded, ready to face the injection with bravery. The nurse who gave me the shot told me I was very brave.
On the way home, I held Mummy’s hand, with a red lollipop in hand. The red lollipop was as sweet as I had imagined. The memory of the injection still lingered, but the pride in Mummy’s eyes and the rewards in my hand made it all worth it. As we walked, I felt a sense of accomplishment. I had faced my fear and come out stronger. Mummy asked me about my day, and I told her all about the big goldfish and the fish tank, and how I had been brave during the injection. With the sun still shining, the world seemed a little brighter.

Neighbors began gathering, watching in silence as Liam worked tirelessly. No one dared to speak for fear that Liam would be disturbed. One, two...with Liam’s rhythmic compressions, two minutes passed quickly. Liam’s T-shirt was drenched in sweat and everyone looked nervous and anxious. Suddenly, with a faint breath coming from his mouth, Ethan came to life finally. Loud cheers broke out from the crowd and Mrs. Thompson hugged Liam tightly, keeping thanking him constantly. Just then, the ambulance arrived. After examining Ethan’s body, the doctor said that it was Liam’s timely first aid that saved Ethan’s life successfully. Soon, Liam became a hero in the community.
Liam was asked to lead a CPR workshop for the community’s youth. He had hardly led his peers to watch documentaries about human anotomy, study first aid techniques and practice performing CPR together when he accepted the task. Gradually, impressed by Liam’s enthusiasm, patience and wealth of knowledge, his peers came to regard him as a good friend, inviting him to their hangouts sometimes. Feeling more motivated, Liam began to devote himself to studying medicine that he loved fully.

When they arrived at the breeder’s house, Logan’s eyes lit up as he saw a litter of adorable Boston terrier puppies. Melanie told him that he could choose any one he wanted. Logan carefully examined each puppy, looking for the one that would be his best friend. Finally, his eyes fell on a small, shy puppy in the corner. It had the same bright, expressive eyes as the Boston terrier he had admired in the park. Logan knew this was the one. He picked up the puppy and held it close, already feeling a strong connection. Melanie smiled, knowing that she had fulfilled Joe’s wish and that Logan would have a true companion. He named the puppy Indy.
Indy brought joy and comfort to Logan during his time of sorrow. The puppy’s playful antics and loving nature helped Logan cope with the loss of his father. Every day, Indy would curl up next to Logan, providing warmth and companionship. Logan found solace in taking care of Indy, and it became a way for him to honor his father’s memory. The bond between Logan and Indy grew stronger each day, and they became inseparable. From then on, Logan often thought about his father and the promise he had made, and he was grateful for the gift of Indy, which had brought so much happiness into his life.

I was hesitant at first, but I decided to give it a try. Accompanied by Cindy, I spent the weekend working as a volunteer there. We organized games to interact with the left-behind children and the experience was heart-warming when I saw their initial shyness gradually transformed into smiles and laughter. We also helped clean the rooms of elderly people in a nursing house, chatted with them, and listened to their stories. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and love. For the first time in months, I forgot about work and gained a sense of authentic pleasure in life.
After that memorable day, I decided to make a change to my life. I still work hard on my business, but I also reserve time for those simple pleasures. I sign up for volunteer activities, finding joy in the smiles of those less fortunate. I have heart-to-heart conversations with my family over delicious home-cooked meals and visit bookstores where I lose myself in the wisdom of written words. With this new routine, my health gradually improves and I rediscover the path to true well-being. Only in this way can I embrace a new chapter, one that includes both ambition and the joy of living.

Meanwhile, the ground shook violently once again, this aftershock stronger than the first. Without hesitation, everyone bolted out of the classroom, our hearts pounding as we ran through the swaying hallways. Reaching the open ground, we gasped for air, relief flooding through us as we realized we were safe. Alice, who had fled earlier, was now helping to calm those around her, her face still pale but her voice steady.
Yet, as we began to regain our composure, we realized that Bob had not made it out. Bob, a quiet classmate, was nowhere to be seen. Without hesitation, our teacher rallied us. “We need to go back!” she shouted, her eyes flashing with determination. Hearts in our mouths, we followed her back into the shaking building. The corridor was a mess, debris littering the floor, but we pressed on, calling Bob’s name. Finally, we found him trapped under a fallen bookshelf. Working quickly and carefully, we lifted the shelf and freed him. Grateful and relieved, Bob stumbled out with us, and together, we escaped the wreckage, our bonds of friendship and solidarity stronger than ever. What an unforgettable experience!
