Last summer, I decided to volunteer at a community center in a small rural town. I had always lived in the city, and the idea of spending two months in a place where life moved at a slower pace was both exciting and intimidating. Little did I know, this experience would change my perspective on life and help me grow in ways I never expected.
The community center served as a hub (中心) for local activities, offering after-school programs for children, English classes for adults, and support for elderly residents. My main role was to assist with the children’s programs. Every morning, I helped organize games, art projects, and reading sessions. At first, I struggled to connect with the kids. Many of them were shy, and I felt unsure of how to engage them. But over time, I learned to be patient and creative. I started using storytelling and hands-on activities to capture their attention, and soon, the classroom was filled with laughter and enthusiasm.
One of the most memorable moments was when a young girl named Lily, who had barely spoken a word during the first week, finally opened up. She shared her dream of becoming a teacher and even helped me lead a reading session. Seeing her confidence grow was incredibly rewarding and reminded me of the impact small actions can have.
By the end of the summer, I had not only developed new skills but also gained a deeper understanding of myself. I learned to adapt to unfamiliar situations, communicate effectively with people from different backgrounds, and appreciate the simple joys of life. This experience inspired me to continue volunteering and to approach challenges with a more open mind.

A new study in Nature by last year’s Nobel winner in Chemistry reveals a possible game-changer in snakebite treatment. Researchers have created new proteins that fight the deadly poisons in snakes, potentially offering a safer and more effective alternative to traditional antivenoms(抗蛇毒素).
According to the WHO, snakebites affect 1.8 million to 2.7 million people each year, causing roughly 100,000 annual deaths and three times as many permanent disabilities. Most injuries happen in less developed countries, where weak health systems aggravate the issue. Currently, the only antivenoms for snakebite are from animal plasma (血 浆 ) and often come with high costs, limited effectiveness, and negative side effects. However, a team led by 2024 Nobel winner in Chemistry David Baker from the University of Washington School of Medicine and Timothy Patrick Jenkins from DTU (the Technical University of Denmark) used deep learning tools to design new proteins that fight poisons from deadly snakes.
The study focuses on an important class of snake proteins called three-finger poisons, which often make traditional antivenoms ineffective. While not yet protecting against full snake venom the Al-generated antivenoms provide full protection from deadly doses of three-finger poisons in mice:80%—100% survival rate, depending on the exact dose, poison and designed protein.
The scientists reasoned that the new antivenoms could be produced using microbes(微生物),avoiding traditional animal immunisation and potentially reducing production costs. But there are more advantages, explains Timothy Patrick Jenkins. “An added benefit of these designed proteins is that they are small-so small that we expect them to enter tissue better and fight the poison faster. And because the proteins were created entirely on the computer using AI-powered software, we dramatically cut the time spent in the discovery phase.”
Despite these encouraging results, the team stresses that traditional anti venoms will remain the main treatment for snakebites for the time being. The new computer-designed antivenoms could initially serve as supplements(补充) or agents that improve the effectiveness of current treatment until next-generation treatments are approved.
32. What does the underlined word “aggravate” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Worsen. B. Explain. C. Remove. D. Simplify.
33. What is the advantage of the new proteins designed by the research team
A. They can be used to detect disease in its initial phase.
B. They are effective in fighting three-finger poisons in humans.
C. They are likely to cut the costs and shorten the time of treatment.
D. They have made it possible to treat snakebites in less developed countries.
34. Why will traditional antivenoms still be the main treatment for snakebites
A. It takes time to change people’s traditional beliefs.
B. The newly-developed proteins prove less effective than expected.
C. Animal plasma used in traditional antivenoms is easier to access.
D. The new antivenoms have not been fully developed for widespread use.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. New Proteins: Promising Hope for Snakebite Treatment
B. Deep Learning Tools: Transforming Research for Snakebite
C. Antivenoms: Costs and Side Effects
D. Snakebites: Health Crisis and death

On January 28, 2025, a special performance called YangBOT amazed audiences at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala. Directed by famous filmmaker Zhang Yimou, the show mixed traditional Chinese yangko dance with modern robot technology.
In the performance, humanoid robots dressed in colorful costumes danced yangko. They spun(使……旋转) handkerchiefs instantly and formed creative group patterns.
