Swimming and English Learning
Can you swim Do you like swimming Yes Well, how can you learn to swim I think the best way is to go into the water and learn. I'm afraid you'll never learn to swim just by reading books about swimming or looking at others swimming. It's the same with the English study. We must practice, practice and practice.
Listening and speaking are very important for beginners. The children in English-speaking countries first listen to others. Then they try to imitate and speak. We can listen to English programs on radio. You may just understand a few words. It doesn't matter. Just be relaxed, and try to catch every word.
Somebody may be a good listener. But he dare not speak. He's afraid of making mistakes. You know we sometimes make mistakes when we speak Chinese. Don't be afraid. We must be brave. If you really want to learn English well, you must try to speak with everyone so long as he knows English. Whether you know him or not is not important. When there's nobody to talk with, you can talk to yourself in English. It's interesting and also a good way to practice your spoken English. Remember, the more you speak, the fewer mistakes you'll make.
Reading and writing are more important for senior school students. First we must choose the books we're interested in. A lot of reading will improve your language sense. This is the most important.
Keep writing English diaries. We can also write English articles. You may even post them to English magazines. Don't be afraid of failure. Failure is the mother of success.
Easier said than done. Well, let's do more practice from now on. I'm sure you'll learn English well in this way.
4. Why does the author compare Swimming with English learning
A. The author likes swimming.
B. The author prefers English learning to swimming.
C. Swimming is easier than English learning
D. English learning way is similar to swimming.
5. We can listen to English ___________, according to the passage.
A. on the radio B. by train C. every minute D. now and then
6. What will you do with mistakes when you speak
A. Don't make mistakes. B. Study hard.
C. Don't be afraid. D. Try not to speak English
7. We should learn English by ________.
A. listening and speaking B. reading and writing C. swimming D. A and B

In January, an Arizona desert community found itself in a terrible situation: The water was cut off. Rio Verde Foothills is made up of about 2,000 homes. For years, many in the community have depended on water trucked in from the nearby city of Scottsdale, which gets its water from the Colorado River. But the river is drying up. Now some people in Rio Verde Foothills must look after themselves. Arizona has increasingly pumped (用泵抽吸) water from underground, but that provides less than half of what the state needs.
Some experts say the solution is to import water from outside of the state. One idea is to build a $5.5 billion desalination (海水淡化) factory on Mexico’s Sea of Cortez. Supporters say this could solve the problem for many years. However, some people see a different future. Imported water could damage the environment. Margaret Wilder is a professor at the University of Arizona, in Tucson. She warns that big projects like this one could be used to support or excuse “much more unsustainable (不可持续的) development in the desert in the future”.
Environmentalists say the desalination project would harm the planet in several ways. Some of the salt taken out of the Sea of Cortez might end up back in the ocean, harming wildlife. The pipeline would damage land where people and animals live. And the desalination process would consume lots of energy. This would create greenhouse gases.
As more water problems like the one in Rio Verde Foothills crop up, Wilder says she's hopeful that Arizona will understand the risks of never- ending expansion (扩大) into the desert.
People in Tucson, Arizona, have found a solution to the city’s water shortage: rainwater. Thousands of households are collecting it and using it for cooking, for drinking, and in their gardens. Government leaders have taken notice. The city now requires publicly built roads to collect stormwater. Tucson also helps residents pay for equipment that collects rainwater for home use.
8. What is the main cause of the water shortage in the Rio Verde Foothills community
A. People have been using too much water during their daily life.
B. Water from the river that provides it is running low.
C. Arizona has stopped pumping underground water.
D. The nearby city has cut off its water supply.
9. What’s the Wilder’s attitude to the desalination factory
A. Doubtful. B. Thankful. C. Confident. D. Uninterested.
10. What does the underlined word “consume” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Use. B. Produce. C. Waste. D. Store.
11. What is the government of Tucson doing to solve its problem
A. Inventing new equipment to reuse water.
B. Limiting the number of homes that can be built.
C. Encouraging people to collect and use rainwater.
D. Increasing the amount of water pumped from underground.
D
Everyone who uses a smartphone unavoidably produces masses of digital data that are accessible to others, and these data provide clues to the user’s personality. Psychologists in Munich (LMU) are studying how revealing these clues are.
For most people around the world, smartphones have become an important part of their daily lives. The digital data that these devices constantly collect are a goldmine-not only for the five largest American IT companies, which make use of them for advertising purposes. They are also of considerable interest in other contexts. For instance, computational social scientists use smartphone data in order to learn more about personality and social behavior. In a study that appears in the journal PNAS, a team of researchers led by LMU psychologist Markus Buhner set out to determine whether data collected by smartphones (such as times or frequencies of use) provide deep understanding of users’ personalities.
The LMU team organized 624 volunteers for their Phone Study project. The participants agreed to fill out an extensive questionnaire describing their personality, and to install an App that had been developed specially for the study on their phones for 30 days. The App was designed to collect coded information relating to the behavior of the user. The automated analysis showed that the method was indeed able to successfully get most of these personality traits from their smartphone usage.
Clemens Stachl is aware that his research might further inspire the big IT firms for data. He says, “the potential of these applications-in both research and business-is very great. The opportunities opened up by today’s data-driven society will undoubtedly improve the lives of large numbers of people. But we must ensure that all sections of the population share the benefits offered by digital technologies.”
12. What do American IT companies use the digital data of smartphones for
A. Searching for gold. B. Making advertisements.
C. Improving living standard D. Producing better smartphones.
13. Why were the volunteers asked to download the App
A. To fear the function of it. B. To develop a new App.
C. To fill a questionnaire. D. To collect information.
14. What can we infer from Clemens Stachl’s words
A. Big IT firms will turn to data collection.
B. More applications will be developed.
C. The digital data research will benefit people.
D. Only IT firms will benefit from digital technologies.
15 What is the text mainly about
A. Your smartphone data can show your personality.
B. Smartphone data will be widely used in the future.
C. Scientists are doing research using smartphone data.
D. Scientists warns the exposing of personal information.

I couldn’t forget the way I was frozen in front of the class today. My teacher, Mr. Liu had divided the class into groups to do speeches. Today was my turn. However, my hands shook so badly that I couldn’t read my notes. My voice became softer even to silence. Mr. Liu kindly ended my part of speech even though I clearly didn’t finish. He also asked me to stay after class for a moment.
“Betty, I know you are shy, but you worked so hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Mr. Liu said, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find courage ” I nodded, grateful for the chance. I went as quickly as I could to my next class, keeping my head down and hoping the school day would end soon.
When I reached home that afternoon, I could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Mum was baking(烘焙). She studied my face as I came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Betty ”
Tears shone in my eyes. I told her the whole story. Mum was silent for a moment with her hands busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything but you can’t talk to your class ” Mum asked. She set the time right and then said, “Let me show you something.”
I followed her to the bedroom. There she showed me a book filled with pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon(丝带) that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn’t easy at first—not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my tears. You just need to find your courage.”

第四部分 写作(满分40分)
第一节:书面表达。(共1小题,计15分)
【46题答案】
【答案】Protecting Wild Animals
At present, as a consequence of human activities, many wild animals are endangered. Worse still, some of them may disappear forever.
There is no doubt that hunting wild animals has a bad influence. For one thing, it causes the imbalance of our ecosystem. For another, it leads to the spread of infectious disease from animals to us human beings, such as SARS and COVID-19.
As far as I am concerned, something must be done to stop this illegal act. Nature reserves ought to be built so as to offer more living space to wildlife. What’s more, we should never have wild
animals for food, as they are part of the environment.
第二节:读后续写(共1小题,计25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】 Hearing Mum’s words, I stared at the valuable blue ribbon, lost in thought. What was it that made me so afraid But still no answer came out. Soon the cake was finished. We went back to the kitchen for the baked cake. Mum cut a slice for the sweet cake and handed it to me, saying, “You can make it.” I raised the warm cake to my mouth. It was so delicious and fragrant. Suddenly I knew where I could find my courage. It was from my mum’s love.
The next day I walked to the front of the classroom to give my speech. Seeing the quiet classroom, I couldn’t help but feel nervous again, my mind going blind and my voice trembling. Then I saw the blue ribbon which my mum tied to my wrist. I thought of Mum’s warm cake, her love and her inspiring experience. Then I took a deep breath and gave my speech with confidence. This time there was no fear any more but a big success and a round of applause.
