The Best Time To Visit Masai Mara
High season
Months: June, July, August, September & October
These are the best months to visit the Masai Mara as it is the long dry season with little or no rainfall. It is easy to spot animals as the bush is less thick and animals gather around available water sources and rivers. It is the best time to witness the Great Migration herds. Accommodation cost will also be high, and as this is the busiest period, so bookings in advance are essential!
Green season
Months: April, May & November
The long rains occur during April and May and short rains in November. Mornings are usually clear and dry, with clouds building into dramatic thunderstorms by late afternoon. A plus to travel during the green season is that fewer people are travelling, which means fewer people and low lodge(旅舍)prices. Some of the lodges and camps close down during these months.
Shoulder season
Months: December, January, February & March
These shoulder months are a time of transition(过渡). Temperatures start to fall off, and migratory birds move on. Animals start to gather in areas where they know there will be water. For birdwatchers they are the best months, as in addition to the resident species, migratory birds, coming here from Europe to spend the winter, are also present. January and February are the best months to witness the birth of wildebeest, zebra and antelope.
1. What is special about the high season
A. It rains a lot. B. Lodge prices are high.
C. More birds migrate here. D. Many zebras are born.
2. When can you spend the least money travelling to Masai Mara
A. In September. B. In October.
C. In November. D. In December.

A mother, Carrie Cort, 51, from Sussex, and her nine-year-old son were named the UK's most environmentally friendly family after winning an award for their environmental achievements.
Now every aspect of her life is environmentally friendly, from her son Adam's birthday parties to her clothing, and she recycles everything from used pens to milk bottle tops. ''Changing our family lifestyle to a green one has saved us around 11, 000 every year, which has given us more financial stability, " Carrie says. "Living green has made us healthier and I feel younger now. It is fun to see what you can make with unwanted or broken things. Growing your own food is great exercise, which is good for wildlife, and the food is much more nutritious and tastier."
“My concern for the way we humans are treating the planet was really aroused in 2008 when Adam was born. When he arrived, I suddenly had this huge, greater awareness of the planet we're bringing our children into though I learnt something about it in university." She began going to talks, reading books, watching documentaries and attending green meetings in order to educate herself in the details of green living.
Carrie set up the local campaign group Sussex Green Living six years after her son's birth. Later, she gave up her high-powered job, as she ran a video company with her brother, to do her job full-time. Today, she organizes talks and workshops. She runs a repair cafe, where people can bring everything to be fixed. Her recycling program helps people reuse wastes. Toothpaste tubes, for example, are turned into purses by an organization. My goal is to inspire more people to lead greener, more environmentally friendly lives, to enable us to live in greater harmony with nature, now and for future organizations. I achieve this by various Sussex Green Living communication programs and working with other organizations who have the same goals and values."
4. How did Carrie feel about her environmentally friendly lifestyle
A. Unwanted. B. Unhealthy. C. Expensive. D. Economical.
5. When did Carrie begin to care about the lifestyle
A After winning an award. B. After giving birth to her son.
C. After being stuck in poverty, D. After attending green meetings.
6. What can we know about Carrie
A. She made good preparations for living green.
B She recycled what people ignored for fun.
C. She does daily exercise by growing food.
D. She majored in planet protection in university.
7. What does Carrie rely on to make her achievements
A. Her repair cafe and workshops.
B. Her own programs and cooperation with others.
C. Her well-paid job and her brother's support.
D. Her independence of realizing her green dream.

Memory
What is your earliest childhood memory Can you remember learning to walk Or talk The first time you watched a television programme Adults seldom call back events much earlier than the year or so before entering school, just as children younger than three or four seldom remember any specific, personal experiences.
A variety of explanations have been suggested by psychologists (心理学家) for this “childhood amnesia”. Now Annette Simms, a psychologist of Riverdale University, offers a new explanation for childhood amnesia. According to Dr. Simms, children need to learn to use someone else’s spoken description of their personal experiences in order to turn their own short-term, fast forgotten impressions of them into long-term memories. In other words, children have to talk about their experiences and hear others talk about them. Without this verbal reinforcement (语言强化), children cannot form permanent memories of what they have experienced.
So why should personal memories depend so heavily on hearing them described Dr. Simms presents evidence that the human mind organizes memories in that way. Children whose mothers talk with them about the day’s activities before bedtime tend to remember more of the day’s special event than those whose mothers don’t. Talking about an event in this way helps a child to remember it. And learning to organize memories as a continuous story is the key to a permanent mental “autobiography (自传)” of important life events. Dr. Simms suggests that we humans may be biologically programmed to turn our life experiences into a novel.
The key to creating this mental life story is language says Dr. Simms. “Children learn to talk about the past,” she says. “Talking to others about their short-term memories of the past leads to the establishment (建立) of long-term memories.” One way it does this is by helping a child to recognize that the retelling of an experience is just the experience itself, recreated in the form of words. The child learns that this “word-description” of an experience can then be stored in the memory and called back at any time. But a child’s language skills are usually not ready for this until the age of three or four, so they have no way to remember the earliest of their experiences.
8. Which of the following is the main idea of this passage
A. Children need to discuss experiences with their parents.
B. Why can’t we remember the events of early childhood
C. Adults can’t remember things as well as children.
D. What are memories of early childhood like
9. What does the word “amnesia” in the second paragraph mean
A. A mental life story. B. A childhood memory. C. Inability to remember. D. Researches on memory.
10. To form permanent memories of their experiences, young children need to ______.
A. talk about them with others B. grow older than three or four
C. write a story in their own language D. have a good relationship with their parents
11. According to Dr. Simms, the reason why children don’t form long-term memories before the age of three is that children ______.
A. can’t call back their experiences B. have nowhere to store the memories
C. haven’t developed enough language skills D. confuse the memory with the experience itself

As humans, we might believe that we are the smartest and perhaps the only creatures in the world capable of having feelings and subjective experience, but is this really the case A new study finds that bumblebees (大黄蜂) like to play. They like to roll around small wooden balls with no apparent motivation — it likely makes them feel good.
Previous evidence suggests that bees have positive and negative emotion-like states usually when they are given food rewards to test their abilities. However, in an experiment of the new study, some researchers had trained bumblebees to roll balls into a target in exchange for a sweet treat. They noticed that sometimes bumblebees would roll the balls outside of the experiment area for no reward.
This observation gave rise to new questions: What are they doing Why Is this random or intentional
To answer these questions, the researchers set up more experiments. In the latest experiment, they watched 45 bumblebees in an enclosed area where they could walk through a clear path to reach a feeding area, or they could go off the path into areas with wooden balls. They found the bumblebees went out of their way to sit on the balls or push them. Each rolled the balls between one and 117 times during the experiment.
The researchers say that because they did it repeatedly with no food payoff, it suggests that the ball rolling was rewarding.
“The behavior was voluntary,” says study first-author Samadi Galpayage. “Bees have a reputation for being hard workers, but the prospect of bees engaging in something like play is really novel and exciting because it shows that bees may experience pleasure and don’t only carry out duties that are strictly essential for immediate survival.”
Galpayage adds, “Personally, I find this behavior fascinating because it tells us that bumblebees, like many other animals, are more than little robotic beings, but have a richer behavior and life than we would have previously thought.”
12 What is probably humans’ typical view on bumblebees according to paragraph 1
A. They have no subjective feelings. B. They are friendly to human beings.
C. They like rolling balls for pleasure. D. They are smarter than other creatures.
13. What did bumblebees do in the latest experiment of the new study
A. They rolled their food around. B. They played with the balls.
C. They stayed in the feeding area. D. They shared food with each other.
14. How does Samadi Galpayage feel about bumblebees’ behavior in the new study
A. Calm. B. Regretful. C. Unconcerned. D. Amazed.
15. Which of the following can serve as the best title of the text
A. Bumblebees Are Hard Workers B. Bumblebees Roll Balls for Food
C. Bumblebees Are Selfless Insects D. Bumblebees Probably Enjoy Playing

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As a young boy, I was carefree. Every vacation I looked forward to two things—seeing my grandpa and hearing his wonderful stories. My grandpa was a very good storyteller. He had worked various odd jobs when he was young and wove his adventures and misadventures into fantastic tales. These wonderful tales colored my childhood.
As I grew up, I had to admit that Grandpa’s stories went on a little long, even a little boring and gradually lost their magic. However, not wanting to upset him, my brother and I would sometimes take turns sitting in the living room, listening to grandpa tell his stories.
When my grandpa was approaching 91, he suffered from serious memory-loss. It was kind of what doctors called dementia (痴呆), probably the earliest stage of Alzheimer’s disease. Following the doctor’s directions, we moved him into a Sunrise Assisted Living Community, where he could get a better care. After that, grandpa hardly came to our house.
One weekend before my grandpa’s birthday, I came to visit him. Seeing grandpa sitting in his armchair, dull-looking, I was consumed with mixed feelings. I wheeled grandpa to the sunshine in the courtyard, talking to him. He couldn’t express himself clearly and spoke in short bursts, but I listened to him patiently and carefully just as I used to be a little boy.
It was then that I noticed a shadow box with some old and yellowish photos in it. I picked one up, in which my brother, several boys in our neighborhood, and I were playing basketball with grandpa cheering us on twenty years before. My mind flashed back to those beautiful memories. Back then, Grandpa was in good physical condition and we were all wearing basketball jerseys, playing and laughing with abandon. I presented the photo to my grandpa, pointing at each member and reminding him of their names. Incredibly, grandpa could speak out the name of every player. I even caught a soft light in grandpa’s eyes and a smile on his lips.

第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】 A bright idea for grandpa’s birthday came to my mind. “Why not give grandpa a surprise ” I said to myself. I immediately got down to carrying out my plan. Luckily, I contacted all the players in the photo. To my great delight, they were greatly touched by the plan and all agreed to join in. To make the scene real, I even managed to find all the basketball jerseys, equipment and arrange for a similar-looking basketball court. The big day finally came. After wheeling my grandpa to the court, we began the special game. While playing, I kept an eye on grandpa, waiting for something deep down.
Seeing “the same players” playing there, grandpa seemed to have thought of something. Glancing at grandpa again, I found him cheering us on just like 20 years before. Sitting in the warm sunlight, he cheered and clapped, with a bigger smile. For a while, my mind seemed to flash back to those beautiful days. Indeed, my plan somewhat worked. I was overjoyed that I could do something to delight Grandpa, an important person in my 1ife. I was not sure whether this birthday would stick in his mind, but one thing was certain: it’d definitely stick in mine.
