Marilynn Moe, 80, is a resident of the Homestead, a senior-living and care community in Rochester, Minnesota, managed by Mark.
Mark fell for Marilynn’s charm in 2012, the day he came to interview for the job. He was standing in the hallway, hoping he didn’t look as nervous as he felt, when a stylishly dressed woman walked right up to him. “Good morning,” she said. “I’m Marilynn. I hope everything works out for you.” She gave him such a warm smile that he couldn’t help but smile back, nerves forgotten.
He got the job, and it didn’t take long for him to realize what a treasure Marilynn was. She’d arrived herself only two years before, moving from Fargo. It was a huge change. She loved teaching, seeing her students’ skills and confidence grow. Would she find something as fulfilling at the Homestead
“I could have just sat in my apartment,” she says, “but I wasn’t going to do that.”
Marilynn noticed that most people kept to themselves and didn’t know much about their neighbors, so she started a monthly newcomers’ get-together. One by one they’d go around the circle and share a fun fact about themselves as an icebreaker.
She went to the monthly women’s breakfast. To her disappointment, only three or four others showed up. She took over, each month lining up one of the residents to give a talk about a special interest, trips they’d taken, former careers, even more weighty topics. She personally invited women to attend. It wasn’t long before the room was packed.
She gave out birthday cards, using the Homestead’s monthly newsletter to get the dates. She played the piano for church services and special occasions.
Marilynn didn’t notice anything different about the Homestead, but others did. “These changes you’re making, they’re great,” the residents would tell Mark. “Keep it up.” Mark knew he wasn’t the one who deserved the credit. Marilynn wasn’t trying to become a noticeable figure. She cared deeply about the people around her, doing so naturally and without intending to seek recognition.
24.How did Mark feel after meeting Marilynn in the hallway
A.Amused. B.Relieved. C.Astonished. D.Worried.
25.What does the underlined word “fulfilling” mean in Paragraph 3
A.Extremely interesting. B.Truly comforting.
C.Spiritually satisfying. D.Incredibly challenging.
26.Why did Marilynn take over organizing the women’s breakfast
A.To improve its quality. B.To promote healthy eating.
C.To show her personal power. D.To make it more engaging.
27.What can be inferred about Marilynn’s contributions to the community
A.They come from her caring nature. B.They go unrecognised by Mark.
C.They are used to gain her influence. D.They are far from Mark’s expectation.

My son just completed high school, and his departure for college marks a significant change for me. Among the things I’ll miss most are his lessons in teenage slang (俚语), which has offered me an accidental and useful portrait of how he and his generation see the world.
The primary value of slang has been to create linguistic markers, a way to set you apart from other people. The terms change over time, but the meanings typically don’t — one generation’s “cool” becomes another’s “dope.”
Members of my son’s generation have a vastly superior approach to slang. They have invented a language that responds to the new and distinct reality they face, a society characterized by collapsing institutions, erosions (削弱) in trust and a loss of faith in a shared sense of meaning.
“Mid,” for example, in my son’s usage, describes things that are average or slightly below. You can’t really complain about them, but they produce no joy. Everything in Starbucks and airports falls into the category of “mid.”
“Glazed” has a similarly impressive precision, indicating the act of positively spinning a judgment on reality rather than complete lying. It is the perfect description of the way social media works, with everything taking on an artificially positive, unreal and not entirely trustworthy look. For example, beach photos on social media might make a destination look like paradise, yet they rarely show the crowded shores or bad weather that are part of the reality.
My favorite slang word is “based,” often used to express agreement when someone states a controversial opinion. “Canada should join the United States,” one might say, to which someone else might reply, “Based.” To my ear, “based” is a perfect word to describe the informational chaos we inhabit.
Slang has brought my son and me closer. It’s taught me that the current crop of teenagers created a language to describe the flawed reality we’ve abandoned them to, and in doing so they’ve proved themselves less misguided and more innovative than we were.
28.What does teenage slang reveal about young people
A.Their need to fit in with peers. B.Their desire to outdo older generations.
C.Their aim to challenge social norms. D.Their response to the flawed reality.
29.Which comment on a crowded beach reflects the underlined word “glazed”
A.“A wonderful getaway!” B.“Not crowded at all.”
C.“What a disaster!” D.“At least we found a spot.”
30.Which word best describes the tone of the text
A.Analytical. B.Appreciative.
C.Instructive. D.Cautious.
31.What is a suitable title for the text
A.Teenagers’ Fondness of Nonsense Words
B.Modern Slang Tells Us about Youth Culture
C.Teens Have Invented a Language for the World
D.The Impact of Teen Slang on Social Relations

I’ve never had a great sense of direction. And I often wander into shops and, upon coming back out, can’t remember which way I’ve come from - left or right Many people are like me, and why do some constantly have no idea where they are
The hippocampus (海马体) is a region of the brain associated with memory and involved in sense of direction. And a nearby region has also been associated with sense of direction. There are four known types of navigation-related neurons (神经元) found in these regions: place cells, grid cells, border cells and head direction cells.
In short, you can think of place cells as an internal cognitive (认知的) map; they identify where you are. Grid cells are like a GPS system in our brain; they tell us about the relationship of this place to other places we’ve been to. Border cells respond to the presence of environmental boundaries at a specific direction and distance from us. Lastly, head direction cells are activated when our head faces a specific direction. These cells will fire electrical impulses when we enter familiar locations, with each group of cells relating to a specific place.
Our reliance on GPS and smartphones may have decreased the ability to use our internal maps. Older adults who regularly used GPS had less activity in their hippocampus, compared with those who did not use GPS. They also performed slightly worse in a cognition test. In contrast, a study involving London taxi drivers found they significantly larger hippocampus than ordinary people.
You can improve your way-finding ability specifically by practicing the skill, according to Aziz, PhD of neurology at Temple University School of Medicine. “The more you get out and go to places, the better,” he says. Physical exercise improves the blood flow to the brain, while mental exercise, such as doing puzzles or learning a new language, stimulates the development of new nerve cells and connections in your brain.
32.How does the author introduce the topic of the text
A.By making a comparison. B.By raising a question.
C.By stating personal opinions. D.By referring to scientific research.
33.What can we learn about the four types of navigation-related neurons
A.They are responsible for different jobs. B.They depend closely on each other.
C.They will decrease in numbers as one ages. D.They will fail to function in unfamiliar situations.
34.What is the potential consequence if we rely too much on GPS
A.It may lead to a larger hippocampus. B.It may improve cognitive abilities.
C.It may increase the number of navigation-related neurons. D.It may reduce activity in hippocampus.
35.What does the last paragraph suggest as a way to improve way-finding ability
A.By making most of GPS. B.By relying more on cellphones.
C.By engaging in physical and mental exercise. D.By avoiding unfamiliar situations.

After finishing my first marathon, I felt I could conquer(征服) anything. As I rested my aching legs, I read a friend’s article about a 70.3 triathlon (铁人三项)she had completed. She described the race as fun. Her story inspired me — should I attempt a triathlon myself
I liked running, but cycling and swimming weren’t my strengths I had always categorized the triathlon as one of those things I’ll never do. However, encouraged by my marathon success, I found a 70.3 triathlon and registered.
I told my coach that my goal was to finish the race within 7 hours. She thought I might make it if I followed a training plan. Training, however, was tough. Every day, I had a big workout that left me exhausted. Many times I considered quitting. But I wanted to push myself and try something challenging. So I persevered with the training plan.
Finally, the race day arrived. I stood on the beach in the early morning. Three triathlon races were being held that day, and I had signed up for the longest — the 70.3 triathlon: a 1.2- mile swim, a 56- mile bike ride, and a 13.1- mile run.
People around me wore fancy triathlon suits and waterproof watches. “Are you doing the 70.3 triathlon ” I asked. To my surprise, they were all competing in the shorter races. I started panicking Everyone looked younger and fitter than I was.
I walked through the crowds until I found another 70.3 competitor —a strong man who was young enough to be my son. My anxiety increased, and I was consumed with doubt as to whether I could even complete the race.
I heard thunder as rain started hitting the beach, hoping the race would get canceled. But an announcer declared the weather was improving and the race would soon begin. With no choice but to proceed, I made my way to the starting line. As I swam, I repeated to myself, “Don’t drown.” I was behind a woman who seemed to be going the same speed, so I followed her lead. Eventually, I was out of the water.
The rain stopped, and the swim was over. My day was looking up. Cheerfully, I started the bike ride.
Paragraph 1:
Unfortunately, minutes later, it was pouring again with strong winds.

Paragraph 2:
I quickly put on dry socks, shoes, and the outfit before starting the 13.1- mile run.
