Emma, a young librarian with a heartwarming smile and a steady commitment to her work, harboured a
deep-seated fear: public speaking. When she was invited to deliver the opening speech at the annual Serenity Book
Festival — an event too significant to decline — her anxiety rose.
Oliver, a bright and considerate boy who frequented the library, quickly sensed Emma’s depression. Having
always admired her warmth and devotion, Oliver approached her with a gentle smile. “Why don’t we overcome our
fear like heroes in them ” he suggested kindly, pointing to the books on the shelf. Moved by the boy’s courage, Emma
agreed softly, “Alright, let’s give it a try!” With each practice, Emma gradually gained the confidence to boldly face
her fear.
As the festival approached, Emma practiced before small groups, then larger ones, steadily improving. But a
week prior, she received an unexpected letter from her old teacher, Mr. Langston, who expressed his intention to attend and eagerly anticipated her speech, adding to her pressure. Noticing her concern, Oliver reminded her how much she
had improved. They did a final practice in front of the library staff, whose encouragement boosted her confidence
significantly, calming her nerves for the big day.
The day of the festival arrived. Stepping onto the stage, Emma felt her heart beating wildly. She took a deep
breath and began to speak. Oliver, sitting in the front row, watched with pride. His smile widened as he heard
confidence in her voice. The audience listened attentively. When Emma concluded with a request for everyone to learn
from books, there was a moment of silence — then the crowd erupted into applause. Tears of joy filled her eyes, not

In recent years, a unique trend called “mukbang (吃播) ” has swept across social media platforms, captivating
millions of viewers worldwide. Originating in South Korea around the early 2010s, the term “mukbang” combines two
Korean words: meokda (to eat) and bangsong (broadcast). It refers to live or recorded videos where hosts consume
large quantities of food while interacting with their audience. This trend reflects not only changing entertainment
preferences but also deeper social shifts.
Mukbangs first gained popularity in South Korea as a response to rising loneliness in urban societies. Many
people, especially those living alone, found comfort in watching others eat and chat, creating a sense of shared
mealtime companionship. The hosts often described flavors, reacted to food textures, or shared personal stories, turning
a simple meal into an interactive experience. Over time, mukbangs evolved into a global phenomenon, with creators
adapting the format to local cuisines and cultures.
The appeal of mukbangs lies in their ability to satisfy multiple human desires. For some, it triggers ASMR
(Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response), a relaxing sensation caused by sounds like chewing or swallowing food.
Others get utmost pleasure from the visual feast of colorful dishes or the novelty of watching hosts taking up extreme
eating challenges. Additionally, mukbangs serve as escapism, offering stress relief in fast-paced modern lifestyles.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, their popularity surged as people sought virtual connections and entertainment at
home.
However, mukbangs have sparked debates. Critics argue that promoting excessive eating normalizes unhealthy
habits, contributing to obesity and food waste. Environmental concerns also arise, as some videos feature single-use
plastics or unsustainable food quantities. Despite these issues, supporters highlight mukbangs’ positive aspects, such as
fostering global culinary (食物的) curiosity and supporting small food businesses through influencer collaborations.
As technology continues to shape how we consume content, mukbangs represent a fascinating blend of culture,
entertainment, and human connection. Whether viewed as a passing trend or a lasting digital ritual, they undeniably
reflect the evolving ways people seek comfort and community in an increasingly online world.

An essential writing skill is the ability to use plain language effectively to convey ideas clearly. Plain language
involves using direct and accessible language with a straightforward structure. To write in plain language, it is
important to follow certain guidelines.
36 The only details necessary are those necessary for understanding. For example, the sign “Wait
behind the yellow line,” at a train platform includes “yellow” so travelers know where to stand.
Plain language avoids using vocabulary that requires specialized knowledge. If you work in IT, you can
comfortably use the word “latency” with your colleagues. 37 But when speaking with someone without an
IT background, you might instead use “slow” to ensure that they know what you’re talking about.
Plain language is more than word choices, though. It also involves structuring writing to prioritize clarity.
38 For example, use clear headers for each section. Mention the topic early in a sentence or paragraph. Write
directly to your reader. 39 Additionally, use the active voice whenever possible to enhance clarity.
It is important to note that not every guideline for plain writing will apply to every piece of writing. The ultimate
goal is to create contents that are accessible and easily understood. By using plain language, you demonstrate respect
for your readers’ time and intelligence. 40
A.That is because they know what it means.
B.This can be achieved in the following ways.
C.Thus, it develops positive relationships with them.
D.In many cases, this means writing in the second person point of view.
E.One key aspect of plain writing is ensuring sentences are as short as possible.
F.This can be especially important for those who speak English as a second language.
G.Plain language reduces the risk of misunderstandings caused by confusing language choices.

For more than 20 years I have been traveling the world, preferring often to spend a year or two in different
countries rather than to just visit as a tourist. It has become an important part of my personality as I grew older and
shaped the way I saw the world and myself.
My little taste of this amazing life was when I was 19 years old. I was selected among a small group of college
classmates to spend a year abroad. This was long before people could travel the world through social media like
Facebook and Twitter. In order to see a place, you had to go there and experienced it.
I was raised in a middle-class family and couldn’t afford to travel around the world the way I wished I could.
The only way I knew about the world outside was through letters I wrote to pen pals from over a dozen countries as a
kid, and from television. Growing up, I always loved the very funny British comedies that were shown on local public
television every Saturday night. So when I got the chance to apply for a study abroad program, I chose London.
Living abroad can be exciting, scary and challenging. I thought it would be easier because I spoke the same
language as the local people did. But I also like to relish (享受) the little differences between the British and American
culture and language. I also learned that in England, they spell words differently than in the U. S. In British spelling,
they put a “u” in words like favor to make it “favour” and an “s” in words like analyze to make it “analyse”. I was able
to adapt quickly to this new way of writing since I was submitting papers all the time for my classes.
Academically, I got to take classes that weren’t offered at my college back home. For example, I had a course in
sociology and learned about the native people of Papua New Guinea.

66. I have been a sports nut since I was old enough to hold a ball. That’s why when my PE teacher presented me
with the idea of joining the swimming team, I decided to give it a shot and challenge myself a bit more.
So I started going to swimming practice last June. At first, I only regarded swimming as a hobby to enhance my
physical fitness. But soon I found I fell in love with it. Then, last week, I had my first swimming competition, in the
100m breaststroke. Standing tall at the head of the lane made me feel both nervous and excited. After the sound of
whistle, I dived in and began to swim with all my strength! Finally, I came in third place. I was so happy for my
achievement, and it proved that hard work paid off.
I will keep on swimming, perhaps for the rest of my life, not only because it makes me healthier and stronger,
but also for the confidence and the sense of achievement it has brought.
67.But there were also challenges that year too. One of my classes was called “Europe Since 1870”. In the U.S., I
would have expected an introductory history class, but in England, I was supposed to have already known the history.
Now was the time to analyze it. That meant I not only had to learn the history as I went along but also had to try to
write a paper explaining why certain events happened as they did. Despite this, I don’t regret anything about my time in
London. Even through painful experiences, I learn to grow.
Sometimes the difficult times made me sad and homesick. But luckily, I met some classmates from all over the
world, and these wonderful interactions with people watered down my negative feelings. I met dozens of interesting
people from places like France, Greece and Germany, Palestine, and Australia. Learning how to make friends with
people from different cultures and backgrounds is really fun. Moreover, interacting with these new friends helps me

M: It was very quick, but I remember lying on the ground with people all around me. And then I saw my mom. She
was hopeless, because she thought my head hurt, but all I had was a broken leg. I was very lucky.
W: Surely, you’re a lucky boy. Be more careful next time.
Text9:W: Well, I m really worried about how I m going to deal with university life. Maybe if I knew the university a
bit better, that might help.
M: Do you have a map of the university
W: Yes.
M: Well, let s look at it together. OK, we are here now in the Dalton House. Opposite this building is the Arts Block
where you will find the computers. The computer rooms are open from 9: 00 a.m. till 8: 00 p.m. on weekdays.
W: Fine.
M: Another important building is the students union. To get to the students union, you keep going down University
Lane, past the Science Block on your left. Opposite the Science Block are the Chemistry labs and the students union is

just on the right, next to Lab B.
W: Fine. But I get a bit confused about the directions.
M: Probably the best thing to do is to walk around and familiarize yourself with everything. Now I need you to fill in
this form. Take it away with you and then make an appointment to see me again and we ll go over it. My telephone
number is on the form. You can ring me anytime, except on Thursday.
Text10:M: As a young child, I always enjoyed physical challenges more than mental ones. I liked to run and
build swings. At that stage I hadn’t yet learned to climb or swim, but I would have loved to try those too. One day we
had a physical education class at school. We did the long jump and handstands, but it was when I tried to do a forward
roll that disaster struck. Somehow, I twisted my neck in an extremely painful way. I screamed loudly and the teachers
were very concerned. An ambulance was called and I was taken to hospital. The doctors fitted me with a collar and I
was told to avoid exercise and stay away from school for eight weeks. At first, I was very bored. Having to keep still all
day was no fun. So I started to read. I looked at books on the shelf at home. I wasn’t interested in love stories — I
avoided those — but crime and adventure did appeal to me. During those eight weeks I developed a lifelong love of
reading. When my collar was removed, the doctors told me not to exercise for another four weeks. Instead of being
disappointed, I was happy to devote more time to my new love — reading.
