Stories usually describe snakes as cold-hearted characters. However, a team of scientists doesn’t believe that. They say that one type of snake makes close friends.
The team of scientists wanted to see how garter snakes (束带蛇) communicate with each other. Especially, they wanted to know whether or not snakes make friends. The results turned out to be rather interesting.
So, what did they do Well, the team gathered 40 garter snakes. The scientists put groups of ten garter snakes in an enclosure (圈地). Inside the enclosure, there were rooms for the snakes to go inside. The team then watched how the snakes behaved (表现) towards each other. They formed groups. The experiment lasted eight days. Every day, the scientists removed (移开) the snakes from the enclosure. Then workers cleaned the space well. When the scientists put snakes back in a different structure, they then went straight back to the same groups again! The scientists believed this could show the garter snakes make friends. The team also said that they had noticed two types of snake personalities: shy and bold (大胆的). Shy snakes were reluctant (不情愿的) to come out of the rooms inside the enclosure. But bold snakes were happy to do that.
The team of scientists believes that we shouldn’t be surprised that snakes form friendship. “All animals, even snakes need to communicate with others,” said Morgan Skinner, one of the scientists in the experiment.
It’s not just snakes, though, that make friends. A recent scientific study found that dolphins do that, too.

Long ago, when the God first planted a tree in the garden, it was full of energy and kept moving. Then the God pulled the tree out and planted it upside down to make sure it stays in one place. What’s the tree It’s the Baobab tree, also called monkey bread tree, bottle tree or others.
The Baobab tree is a strange looking tree that grows in Africa and Australia. Just like its name “Bottle Tree”, it looks like a large bottle. Some grow as tall as a 16-floor building. During the dry season, these trees are standing there without leaves, and look like trunks (树干) sticking up in the air. But when the rainy season comes, leaves appear and then flowers come out. Later, the flowers can turn into fruit.
Baobab is called “the tree of life”, because they can live longer than 1,000 years old. In the dry land, the baobab can pull in and hold 1,000 gallons of water. Thirsty people can drink the water stored in the tree. The fruit, monkey bread, is good to eat. Baobab leaves are a kind of medicine. People can use the bark (树皮) to make paper or cloth. When a baobab gets old, its trunk becomes hollow. An old tree can hold many people. The local people often build their houses inside these trunks. It is such a useful tree; some people could hardly live without it.

The well-known Stonehenge is in the countryside of southern England. It is a man-made stone circle. Archaeologists (考古学家) have studied it for a long time. They are trying to learn how and why it was built.
Stonehenge has a big circle of very large and heavy stones standing like soldiers, reaching high up. Some of them weigh more than a school bus (22,680 kilograms or 50,000 pounds). They are called sarsen stones (砂岩巨石). And on top of some of the stones, there used to be other stones called lintels (楣石). Inside the big circle, there is a smaller part that is shaped like a horseshoe. The stones here are also big and important. The whole Stonehenge is quite large, about the size of a big playground.
Stonehenge sits in an open field in southern England. Archaeologists say people have lived in that area for about ten thousand years. Long ago, the area was covered in trees. Later, people cut them down to clear land for farming. Archaeologists believe that people started building Stonehenge about 5000 years ago. Back then, people only had simple tools like animal bones, not powerful machines. They might bring the stones from far away. Besides, the stones were very heavy and people had to move them slowly and carefully step by step. No one knows exactly how the ancient people built Stonehenge. That is why Stonehenge remains a big mystery.

As a dog owner, do you have trouble finding your dog’s favorite toys Don’t worry! According to a new research (研究), some of our pet dogs can remember the names of their toys. They can remember even if they haven’t seen those toys for a long time.
Five dogs took part in the first part of the research two years ago. These dogs were taught the names of 12 toys. After one month, the researchers tested them. The result was that the dogs could remember the names. Then the dog owners took the toys away and hid them for two years.
Two years later, the dogs took part in the second part of the research. First, their owners took the toys out from the hiding places and put them on the floor with some other toys. After that, the owners said the names of the hidden toys and asked the dogs to get them. On average, the dogs made correct toy choices 44% of the time. Some dogs even had a success rate (率) of 60%.
The research showed that the dogs were storing the names of their toys in their long-term memory. The research team also said that not all dogs can learn the names of toys. And it is not clear why some can and others can’t. Researcher Dror said, “For dog owners, a good method for training their dogs to remember toy names is to take some time to play with their dogs.”

The Yangtze River is the longest river in China. It is the home to over 400 species (物种) like the Chinese sturgeon (中华鲟). The Chinese sturgeon is one of the largest fish in the world and it’s long. A Chinese sturgeon can grow up to about 5m long, over 500kg and live to be 40 years old. They’ve lived on the earth for about 140,000,000 years, so people call them a “living fossil (化石)”.
The Chinese sturgeon was common in the river before. However, it’s in danger now. Fishing too much in the 1970s made the species fewer and fewer. And in 1981, the building of the Gezhouba Dam put the sturgeon into two groups. The two groups could not get together. As a result, the species became even fewer. So the help for the Chinese sturgeon is very necessary.
Luckily, China already took action. On May 14th. Shanghai passed a new rule to help the Chinese sturgeon. This was the first rule in the country to help one fish in danger. From January 2020, the country also started to stop people from fishing in the Yangtze River. It will last (持续) for ten years. We believe the Chinese sturgeon will become more and more. We should also play a part in saving the species in danger.

How much do you know about birds Here are some interesting facts.
How do birds fly
Birds have one feature (特点) that tells them from all other animals: feathers (羽毛). These strong feathers, together with their light bodies, allow birds to fly with amazing skills and speed. Their special wings can be used in many different ways to control height and direction. Some birds fly high, while others stay low to the ground.
Why do birds fly south for the winter
Birds move from one place to another for some reasons. Some areas in the world are only comfortable during the warmer months of the year. So when cold weather comes, birds fly to warmer areas. These trips can be as long as thousands of miles. In this way, they can find lots of food.
________
Bird families work together to build nests, and each bird has its own special job. Some birds are great at collecting things, while others are good at building. Once they started, everybody followed, and now they have a tradition. Younger birds watch and try to copy the older ones. This teamwork helps them learn the ways to build special nests.

Do you know how birds keep warm in winter People used to think they keep warm by shaking and using their feathers as our woolen clothes. Few people would think heat might come from inside birds.
This year, researchers (研究员) at Lund University in Sweden have found that birds’ blood produces (产生) more heat in winter. The secret is the energy factories of cells, the mitochondria (线粒体). Many animals have no mitochondria in their red blood cells (红细胞), but birds do. “In winter, instead of producing more energy, the mitochondria seem to produce more heat.” says Andreas Nord, the study researcher at Lund University.
Then how do the mitochondria work The researchers studied different birds on two different seasons: early autumn and late winter. They took blood samples (样品) from the birds and got the red blood cells. By using a scientific tool, the researchers then were able to know how much oxygen (氧气) was spent on producing energy, and how much on heat. Finally, they also got the amount of mitochondria in each blood sample.
The results are as follows. The blood samples taken in winter had more mitochondria. What’s more the mitochondria worked harder at that time. However, the work was not to produce mare energy but beat. The researchers had no idea that the birds could change their blood as a heating system in this way, so they were surprised.
Now the researchers are doing more study, hoping to find out whether the food that the birds eat in winter affects the mitochondria.
63.What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A.Birds. B.People. C.Friends. D.Animals.
64.Which of the following statements about the mitochondria is TRUE
A.The mitochondria work much harder in autumn.
B.The mitochondria produce more heat in autumn.
C.Many animals have them in their red blood cells.
D.Birds have the mitochondria to keep warm in winter.
65.Which is the correct order about how the researchers did the study
① They found how much oxygen was spent.
② They got the red blood cells from the samples.
③ They got the amount of mitochondria!
④ They took blood samples from the birds.
A.④ ② ③ ① B.④ ② ① ③ C.④ ① ② ③ D.① ④② ③
66.What’s the best title of the passage
A.The mitochondria are very useful. B.Blood helps birds keep warm in winter.
C.We should protect our friends—birds. D.Researchers did a successful study.
Animals do many different, amazing things to get through the winter. Some of them migrate. They travel to other places where the weather is warmer or where they can find food.
Many birds migrate in autumn. The trip can be dangerous, so some travel in large groups. For example, geese (鹅) fly in noisy, “V”-shaped groups. Other kinds of birds fly alone.
Some animals stay active in winter. They must change themselves as the weather changes. Many change their bodies. For example, snowshoe rabbits grow white fur to help them hide in the snow.
▲ Some animals, like mice, collect lots of food in autumn and store it to eat later. Some animals eat different kinds of food as the seasons change.
Some animals hibernate (冬眠) for part or all of the winter. This is a special, very deep sleep. The animal’s body becomes cold, and its heartbeat and breathing (呼吸) slow down. It seldom moves. In autumn, these animals get ready for winter by eating much more food than in summer and storing it as body fat. They use this fat to keep them alive while hibernating.
Water makes good protection for many animals. When the weather gets cold, they move to the bottom of lakes and rivers. There, frogs and many fish hide under rocks or fallen leaves. Cold water holds more oxygen (氧气) than warm water, and frogs can breathe through their skin.
Every type of insect has its own life cycle and that is the way it grows and changes. Different insects spend the winter in different forms of their lives. Some insects also spend the winter without moving. Some insects spend the winter as pupae (蛹). Other insects die after laying eggs in autumn. The eggs change into new insects in spring and everything begins all over again.

Recently, researchers have found that dolphins know their own names much like people. Dolphins talk to one another with whistles (口哨) and calls. Scientists have known that the animals also use unusual whistles to name each other. They had thought that dolphins only heard each other’s voices. However, the scientists didn’t know that dolphins listen for their names too.
To test this idea, the researchers caught 14 dolphins and recorded their name calls. The scientists then copied each dolphin’s voice. When the changed recordings were played, the dolphins replied strongly to the names of their relatives and close group members. They paid no attention to the names of dolphins they did not know.
Dolphins live in large groups that grow and change. Each dolphin’s unusual whistle helps it quickly find a friend or a family member, or call for help. Understanding their calls requires learning. It’s a skill that’s seen in very few animals, which include humans, elephants and bats.
Elephants, for example, communicate with sounds. Their sounds can be heard by other elephants miles away. Dolphins, too, communicate with each other by making sounds like this.
Elephants also communicate by moving their head, feet and trunk. In much the same way, dolphins communicate through their movements. They often touch each other to express friendship.
Unlike dolphins, elephants also communicate through their great sense of smell. They can recognize other elephants through the smells they have.
Why do dolphins and elephants share the gift of communication Scientists think it may be because they are social and smart animals. Both have strong family relationship. Now, whether they also have nicknames is another question!

With their long tusks (象牙), elephants look strong. However, they also make the animal endangered. Many of them are killed for their tusks. People make elephant tusks into crafts (工艺品) and jewelry and sell them to rich people.
But can these priceless body parts grow back The answer is no, Live Science said. The elephants’tusks are actually part of their teeth.
Nearly all African elephants and most male Asian elephants have these long teeth. About one-third of the tusk is in the animal’s skull (头骨). The tusk has a nerve (神经) running down its center. This makes it similar to your teeth. Once you lose a teeth, you will never grow a new one.
Elephants use their tusks to protect themselves, lift things, dig for water and gather food. But losing the tusk will not kill them. How they lose the tusk is what matters. Usually, people get tusks by culling (限量捕杀), which means killing old and weak elephants. They also take tusks from the elephants that have died naturally.
However, these sources aren’t enough to keep up with the need for tusks. Therefore, some poachers (偷猎者) kill healthy elephants and cut their faces open to remove the tusks. About 27,000 elephants are killed by poachers each year, according to National Geographic.
As a result of poaching, some African clephants have gradually evolved (进化) without tusks, which has helped them avoid being killed. In Mozambique, about 90percent of African elephants were killed for their ivory and meat from 1975 to 1992, National Geographic reported. Scientists found that about a third of younger-females—the generation born after 1992—never developed tusks.

She didn’t have a chance to fly out. She didn’t take exercise at all. Then the pigeon became fatter and fatter. The pigeon was pleased with her life. She thought, “How lucky I am. I’m given lots to eat, and I don’t have to look for anything by myself.”
One day, a crow (乌鸦) flew into the farmer’s house and stopped by the pigeon’s cage. The pigeon saw the crow and began to talk with him. She said, “You must be tired because you have to search for food by yourself. Don’t you wish you could live as well as me ”

Swifts (雨燕) live mostly in the air. These small birds are among the fastest animals on Earth. In fact, swifts can go two or three days without touching the ground! To get used to life in the sky, swifts use their speed and the saliva (唾液) in their mouths.
Swifts can fly faster than 100 miles per hour. That’s because their wings are like boomerangs (飞行器). This shape of the wings helps them to fly much faster. They can also move one wing faster than the other, which allows them to make sharp turns without slowing down. Making fast, sharp turns helps swifts catching flying bugs to eat.
The saliva helps swifts catch bugs to feed their young. It is sticky, like glue Swifts often fly into clouds of bugs such as mosquitoes and open their wide mouths to catch as many insects as they can. The bird collects insects in its mouth gradually and holds the insects in a sticky ball of saliva. One food ball can contain nearly 1,000 bugs.
Swifts also use their saliva as glue to build their nests. The birds catch feathers in the air and stick the feathers together to build a strong nest on the side of a building. Swifts’ short feet are not good for walking or standing on land for long. But their sharp claws allow them to stick to rocks and walls so they can take a brief rest before returning their lives in the sky.
