Train trips deliver a little slice of effortless adventure, transporting travelers through changing landscapes with diverse people. Here are four favorite rail journeys:
Cairo to Luxor, Egypt
Route: Cairo to Luxor
Journey time: 10 hours
This railway line is a fine way to get to know the ancient civilizations. Most visitors choose to travel on an overnight train from Cairo, dozing off at night. Rise early for river views before arriving at Luxor’s ornate station.
Ella to Kandy Line, Sri Lanka
Route: Kandy to Ella
Journey time: 7 hours
There can be no better way to get from A to B in Sri Lanka’s central highlands than on this train. This train is a lifeline for locals journeying from Kandy into the hills, as well as a beloved day out for travellers. It passes through tea plantations, farming fields, and rural temples.
Tohoku Shinkansen, Japan
Route: Tokyo to Shin Aomori
Journey time: 3 hours
Japan was the birthplace of high-speed rail beginning with the first ‘bullet train’ in 1960s. The longest and fastest is the Tohoku Shinkansen. Travelling at 200mph is that if you blink you risk missing the views — nonetheless, keep your eyes peeled for glimpses of Komine Castle and the leafy streets of the city.
Bernina Express, Switzerland
Route: Chur to Tirano
Journey time: 4 hours
Covering 76 miles, this ride on the Bernina Express may be short but it is packed with dramatic scenery — passing through tunnels, over bridges, and across the Bernina Pass. The journey is a great trip, particularly stunning in winter, with snow-covered landscapes.
1. What is the main reason for tourists to choose Ella to Kandy Line, Sri Lanka
A. To enjoy high-speed travel. B. To experience local culture.
C. To view snowy landscapes. D. To experience ancient sites.
2. When is the Bernina Express especially wonderful
A. In spring. B. In summer. C. In autumn. D. In winter.
3. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To recommend four wonderful train journeys.
B. To introduce the history of the different rails.
C. To compare different train routes around the world.
D. To advise readers how to plan a good train journey.
B
Liu Yuelai’s journey began in the early 2000s when he noticed something troubling in Shanghai’s neighborhoods. At first glance, the cracked and faded concrete wall surrounding a restaurant in Xinjiang’s capital Urumqi seems an unlikely place to find a dynamic center of creativity. And yet it’s here that children, chefs, retirees, and college students have gathered to paint flowers and roosters, and plant peppers, tomatoes, and so on. This “oasis (绿洲) project” is the original idea of Liu Yuelai, a professor at Tongji University’s College of Architecture and Urban Planning in Shanghai. “This canvas (画布) has become a gathering area for about 30 Uyghur locals,” Liu explains, adding that the transformation has increased interactions between nearby residents as well as boosted the neighboring restaurant’s monthly earnings from 120,000 yuan to 180,000 yuan.
Liu’s vision was simple yet powered spaces — like old construction outbuildings or empty hospital hallways — into green, productive areas where people could reconnect with nature and each other. Despite facing initial resistance, Liu persisted. Today, his team has created over 1,000 community gardens across China.
These gardens have become more than just green spaces — they are places where communities come together. In 2022, during a garden project in Shanghai, locals got to know Uncle Ma, a bicycle repairman who had lived nearby for over a decade. Through working side by side in the garden, they learned about his life and even helped him find a new job when he faced unemployment. “This small garden showed the community’s strength and care,” Liu recalls.
For Liu, these gardens are also a way to slow down in a fast-paced world. “Nature tells us we don’t have to work relentlessly,” he says. His goal is to create 2,040 community gardens in Shanghai, forming a green network that covers 70% of the city’s neighborhoods. Through his work, Liu is planting seeds of change, proving that even the smallest spaces can foster connection, belonging, and hope.
4. What inspired Liu Yuelai to start the “oasis project”
A. The observation of the neighborhoods. B. The need to boost the tourism industry.
C. The strong support from local residents. D. The high income potential of the project.
5. Which of the following best describes Liu Yuelai
A. Cautious. B. Humorous. C. Determined. D. Independent.
6. The author mentioned the example of Uncle Ma in Paragraph 3 to show ________.
A. the gardens are popular among repairmen B. the gardens are beneficial for people in need
C. the gardens can help create job opportunities D. the gardens can strengthen community bonds
7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Oasis Project: Turning Communities One Garden at a Time
B. Oasis Project: Transforming Unused Urban Corners Creatively
C. Community Gardens: The New Trend in Suburban Development
D. Community Gardens: How They Boost Local Restaurant Income
C
Artificial intelligence, once a theoretical concept, has quickly become a dominant force in the technological landscape. In just two years, AI-driven tools like ChatGPT and Doubao have moved from experimental to essential, weaving their way into our work, homes, and even our social media feeds.
Similarly, OpenAI’s DALL-E, an AI program capable of generating detailed images and art from textual descriptions, has led to a global conversation about the creative possibilities and potential pitfalls of AI.
As these technologies continue to advance, the conversation unavoidably turns to regulation. There has been a growing awareness that the pace of AI innovation must be matched with thoughtful governance to ensure it serves the public good while minimizing harm.
Marzyeh Ghassemi, an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), pointed out that the question of whether or not AI should be regulated is not one of possibility but of necessity. In the absence of regulation, there is a real risk that AI could develop in ways that are inconsistent with human values and societal norms, leading to unintended consequences.
In terms of AI regulation, Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 1012 standard, also known as the IEEE Standard for System serves as a roadmap for addressing the varied risks associated with emerging AI technologies. Its approach can be adapted to AI systems. By following the IEEE 1012 standard, regulators and industry professionals can systematically assess and control the risks lying in AI applications, paving the way for safer and more reliable technology employment.
Professor Shen Weixing from the Law School of Tsinghua University assumes that policymakers should encourage the evolution of the IEEE 1012 standard itself to address more AI-specific issues and keep up with the rapidly developing landscape of AI technologies. By doing so, they can help create a regulatory environment that not only protects consumers and the public but also fosters innovation and growth within the AI sector.
8. What does the underlined word “pitfalls” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Failures. B. Advantages. C. Dangers. D. Opportunities.
9. Why is AI regulation necessary according to Marzyeh Ghassemi
A. Because AI without regulation may go against morality.
B. Because AI technologies develop too rapidly to control.
C. Because AI development may conflict with human rights.
D. Because AI innovation must be faster than its governance.
10. What do we know about IEEE 1012 standard
A. It can generate detailed images and art works.
B. It has solved all AI-specific issues completely.
C. It helps regulators control risks in AI applications.
D. It is a fixed rule that can’t be adapted to AI systems.
11. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The urgency of AI regulation due to its serious consequences.
B. The importance of AI regulation and relevant standards.
C. The challenges in AI regulation standard improvement.
D. The IEEE 1012’s role in AI innovation and regulation.
D
A recent study published in Nature Medicine has revealed that microplastics and nanoplastics (纳米塑料) (MNPs) accumulate at higher levels in the human brain than in the liver and kidneys. Moreover, individuals diagnosed with dementia (痴呆) had even higher levels of MNPs in their brains.
MNPs, invisible to the naked eye, originate from larger plastic products, animal tissues and the air, with indoor air often containing more MNPs than outdoor air. When breathed in, these tiny particles can travel through the body and accumulate in organs such as the lungs, blood vessels, and bone marrow. Alarmingly, even larger MNPs can pass through the blood-brain barrier and enter the brain. Because the substance breathed in through the nose allows MNPs to reach the olfactory bulb (嗅球), a part of the brain that processes smell, providing a more direct route to the brain.
The study examined 52 human brain, liver, and kidney samples from 2016 and 2024. The result showed that brain and liver samples from 2024 had significantly higher concentrations of MNPs compared to those from 2016. Overall, brain samples contained 7 to 30 times more MNPs than liver and kidney samples. According to the findings, the researchers suggest dramatically increasing concentrations of MNPs in our homes, air and water could be to blame.
The study also found that MNPs levels were 3 to 5 times higher in the brains of individuals with dementia. However, the researchers emphasize that this does not necessarily mean MNPs cause dementia, but it highlights an association that requires further study. Additionally, MNPs can accelerate the spread of stomach cancer cells.
While it is impossible to completely avoid exposure to plastics, Kasteel, a professor of the study, suggests that individuals can make small choices to reduce their exposure. Scientists are also working on solutions to minimize microplastics in the environment through measures such as applying the precautionary principle and developing strategies to lower exposure, potentially preventing certain health risks.
12. How is Paragraph 3 mainly developed
A. By analyzing causes. B. By classifying dates.
C. By following orders. D. By comparing figures.
13. Which of the following statements about MNPs is incorrect
A. MNPs may be found in marine animals. B. MNPs can directly enter human’s brain.
C. MNPs can seriously result in dementia. D. MNPs may accelerate stomach cancer.
14. What is the author’s attitude to the accumulation of MNPs in the human brain
A. Dismissive. B. Optimistic. C. Supportive. D. Concerned.
15. Where is the text most probably taken from
A. A research plan. B. A science report. C. A health leaflet. D. An education paper.

From new semi-private pet airplanes to road trips, this is everything pet parents should consider before hitting the road.
Cats and dogs are not just pets. ___16___ So, not surprisingly, more pet parents want to bring their furry friends along when they travel. If you’re not sure whether to bring your pet along while traveling, these animal and travel experts offer some helpful guidance.
Put your pet’s well-being first.
Though you may be excited at the scene of bringing your doggy or kitty along for the journey, your pet may not feel the same way. ___17___ This is especially true for senior pets or those with existing medical issues. You know your pet best, but it’s always a good idea to get in touch with your vet, says Lilian Wong, a veterinarian and clinical skills instructor at Oregon State University’s Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine.
___18___
If you’ve decided to bring your pet along, the next decision is how to reach your desired destination. If possible, Wong recommends road-tripping. “You can take as many breaks as you and your pet need,” she says. “You can drive to a nearby vet hospital if there is a medical emergency. When you are traveling on a plane, you don’t have that flexibility.” Driving isn’t always possible or practical, so you might look into flying. In addition, most airlines can only accommodate a handful of pets per flight. ___19___
Prepare Mentally.
A common phrase that travel professionals often say is “___20___“ This saying is especially true when traveling with pets, which are living, breathing and naughty creatures with minds of their own. Go into the trip with a mindset that at least one thing will go wrong, always take it easy and stay calm. What is necessary is to have a backup plan. Set your expectations appropriately so you don’t become frustrated or disappointed and do more research than you think is necessary.
A. Pack your patience.
B. Plan a pet-friendly journey.
C. Consider the mode of travel.
D. Travel could be harmful to their health.

I burst into Mom’s study, waving a brilliant feather like a tiny treasure. “Mom, look what I found! It’s a feather from a Vaux’s swift (沃氏雨燕)! I’ve been looking for this one for ages!” I bounced on my toes, unable to contain my excitement.
Mom glanced up from her books and smiled. “It’s beautiful!” she said, then took a deep breath. “Sam, next week I will be flying a biplane in the airshow. Would you like to join me ”
I froze. Even the slightest thought of flying made my stomach twist and turn, let alone flying in a biplane — with an open cockpit (驾驶舱) where you could look down and see how far you were from the ground. “No thanks, Mom. Sorry.” I replied as I headed upstairs to my room. With each heavy step, I tried to convince myself — planes are safe, Mom is an amazing pilot and she deserves a brave son. But no matter how much I repeated it, the fear clung to me like a shadow.
That afternoon, while walking home from school, my best friend, Emily, called out, holding a birdcage. “Sam, look! It’s a Vaux’s swift! I think it got hurt during migration — maybe its natural enemy tried to catch it. The injury isn’t too bad, and it should heal in about a week. But the problem is... it’s all alone. Its flock is gone.” My chest tightened. “We have to help it find its flock again.” I said worriedly, “If it doesn’t, it won’t survive the winter.” Emily nodded, “It’s so heartbreaking to see it left behind.”
As the days passed and the little bird grew stronger, I couldn’t stop thinking about how to help it. Then, like a flash of light, a thought sparked in my head. No matter how scary or impossible it seemed, I was going to make sure this tiny bird caught up with its flock.
On the morning of the airshow, I found Mom. I took a deep breath to steady my pounding heart and declared with determination, “Mom, I’m ready to fly with you today.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Mom’s eyes widened in surprise, but a proud smile quickly spread across her face.

【答案】Dear Peter,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re considering quitting football training due to academic pressure.
I know how difficult it can be to manage both studies and a passion like football. The mountains of assignments and looming exams are indeed overwhelming making you feel like you have no choice but to let go of football.
But think about it. Football isn’t just a sport; it’s a great stress reliever. After focusing on textbooks for hours, a short training session can help you relax and recharge. My suggestion is to draw up a well-organized schedule. Set fixed time for study, training, and rest. By doing this, you can keep up with your studies while still enjoying football. I sincerely hope you won’t give it up.
Best wishes,
Li Hua

【答案】
Mom’s eyes widened in surprise, but a proud smile quickly spread across her face. “I’m incredibly proud of you, Sam!” she exclaimed, wrapping me in a warm and tight embrace. As we walked side by side towards the biplane, she took the time to patiently explain every single control panel and all the crucial safety measures. Her calm voice and confident demeanor had a soothing effect, gradually easing the knot of nerves in my stomach. Before long, we carefully strapped ourselves in, and in an instant, the engine roared to life, vibrating the plane with power.
As the biplane gracefully rose into the sky, I held the birdcage tightly in my arms. The initial rush of fear slowly melted away, replaced by a profound sense of wonder. I looked down in amazement as the ground shrank smaller and smaller beneath us, a strange thrill coursing through my veins. Before long, I excitedly spotted a flock of birds in the distance. With Mom’s gentle and expert guidance, we carefully flew closer. I took a deep breath, opened the cage, and the Vaux’s swift hesitated for just a moment before taking off with a flutter of wings. It soared towards the flock, disappearing into their midst. A huge smile lit up my face, and I knew this flight had not only saved the bird but also helped me overcome my fear.
