Plimoth, Massachusetts, about forty-five miles out of Boston, is a popular tourist attraction. Plymouth was the site of the second colony (殖民地) in America. On November 11, 1620, a small ship of English settlers landed there and started a colony, looking for a better life.
One of the most popular attractions in Plymouth is Plimoth Plantation. Plimoth Plantation was the dream of Henry Hornblower II. When he was a boy, Hornblower read and heard stories about the pilgrims who lived in Plymouth. When he was older, he worked with archaeologists (考古学家) in Plymouth for many years. They found more than 350,000 artifacts (人工制品) form the time of the colonists. At the same time, historians studied pilgrims’ father gave $2,000 to the Pilgrim Society, allowing it to rebuild Plimoth Plantation. The Society made reproductions of the clothes, tools, furniture, and houses of the 1620s.
Today, Plimoth Plantation is a living museum of more than twenty homes, shops, and gardens. Visitors can walk through the colonial town where each house on the main street looks exactly like a house of the 16205. Those who work in the museum are the “colonists” and they dress, talk, and carry out the activities of colonial America. They wear the same kinds of clothes that the Plymouth colonists used to wear. The women cook in open fireplaces and follow colonial recipes. The man raise the same vegetables and care for the same kinds of animals that were present in colonial times. Everyone uses the same kinds for tools that the pilgrims used almost four hundred years ago. When visitors talk to the “colonists”, they answer with the same English and the same accent that the colonists had.
Over the years, Plimoth Plantation has changed a lot. Today, it is also possible to visit a replica (复制品) of Mayflower-mayflower II, the ship the pilgrims sailed from England to Plymouth. There is also a reproduction of a Wampanoag homesite, which introduces visitors to the life of the Indian tribe (部落) who helped the colonists live through their first years in their new country.

The Maryland Center for History and Culture(MCHC) is currently hosting “The Jim Henson Exhibition: Imagination Unlimited”. The exhibition spotlights Henson’s unique contributions to children’s education, including his creation of the Muppets (布偶).
Born in 1936 in Mississippi, Henson grew up in Maryland. His creative talents were evident when he was a student at high school. He loved cartooning and creating sets for school theater productions. While a freshman at university, Henson made puppets for a local TV station. The station’s producers were so impressed that they asked him to produce his own puppet show. Called Sam and Friends, the program started in 1955. Viewers loved Henson’s playful characters, including an early version of Kermit the Frog.
While at university, Henson majored in home economics. At the time, it was the only major that offered classes in sewing and textiles (纺织品).Henson not only honed his creative skills at university, but he was also good at marketing and business. “He was an entrepreneur who happened to get into puppetry, ” said Deborah Wood, MCHC’s learning manager.
In 1959, Henson married Jane Nebel, whom be had met at university. The couple established Muppets Inc. which later became the Jim Henson Company. Visitors also get a chance to appreciate Henson’s creative process and inventiveness through hands-on displays. A recent analysis from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine highlights the benefits of replacing animal products with plant-based foods. This analysis, which amplifies a previous study by the same committee, further emphasizes the significant impact of plant-based diets on weight loss, cholesterol (胆固醇) and fat intake in overweight adults.
The most significant finding is that both healthy and unhealthy plant-based foods contribute to weight loss when they replace animal products in the diet. This conclusion is significant because it underlines the potential of a plant-based diet, regardless of the specific type of plant-based foods consumed, in managing weight and improving overall health.
This analysis is a secondary examination of a prior study that involved 244 overweight adults. The participants were divided into two groups. The first group followed a low-fat vegan (素食的) diet, and the second made no changes to their diet. Obviously, the study set no restrictions on calorie intake, and the researchers did not give participants specific instructions on diet quality.
The study authors used two different indexes (指标) to assess: the healthful plant-based diet index (hPDI), and the unhealthful plant-based diet index (uPDI). The hPDI emphasizes fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans, while the uPDI includes more refined grains and fruit juices. Higher scores on the indexes correlate with greater consumption of plant-based foods and reduced consumption of animal products.
The results revealed that after 16 weeks, participants on the vegan diet showed increased scores in both indexes. This increase significantly correlated with participants losing an average of about 13 pounds, mainly from reduced fat mass. The second group showed no change in their index scores.
Overall, the analysis provides strong evidence that eating plant-based foods is effective for weight management and health improvement.
28. What does the underlined word “amplifies” mean in paragraph 1
A. Abuse. B. Expand. C. Launch. D. Classify.
29. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The causes of putting on weights. B. The key insight on plant-based foods.
C. The significance of managing weights. D. The specific types of plant-based foods.
30. How is the study conducted
A. By improving participants’ diet quality.
B. By following participants’ daily routines.
C. By monitoring participants’ calorie intake.
D. By comparing participants’ indexes scores.
31. What can we know from the study
A. Being on diet is the key to losing weight.
B. All plant products are beneficial to health.
C. Plant-based foods show promising results.
D. Animal products have no effect on weight.
D
In the rich countries of the West, the electric vehicle revolution is well occurring. Climate-conscious consumers drive Teslas or Polestars for reasons of morality (道德) and fashion. Poorer countries are also experiencing a wave of electrified trend. In Bangladesh, electric three-wheeler taxis, known as tuk-tuks, are rapidly replacing gas-powered ones on the streets. Such electric vehicles are climate friendly, cost effective, and help reduce air pollution.
Yet a glance under the hood (引擎盖) of these vehicles shows a poisonous secret: each tuk-tuk runs on five massive lead-acid batteries (铅酸电池), containing almost 300 pounds of lead (铅) in total. Every year and a half or so, when those batteries need to be replaced and recycled, about 60 pounds of lead leaks into the environment. Battery recycling, often at small-scale unregulated factories, is a highly profitable (高利润的) but deadly business.
Lead is dangerous, and any exposure to it is harmful to human health. Lead that has entered the environment hurts people on an unexpected scale. The numerous ways lead enters air, water, soil, and homes across the developing world and the enormous damage it does to human health, wealth, and welfare cause one of the biggest environmental problems in the world yet receives little attention.
The World Bank estimates that lead kills 5.5 million people per year, making it a bigger global killer than AIDS, malaria, diabetes, and road traffic deaths combined. On top of the shocking deaths, the social burden of lead poisoning is heavy, as is its contribution to global inequality — our research on the cognitive (认知的) effects of lead poisoning suggests that it may explain about one-fifth of the educational achievement gap between rich and poor countries.
But unlike many challenges faced by developing countries, lead poisoning is a problem that can be resolved through financial investment (财政投入). Better monitoring, research, and rules can help protect children all over the world from the unpleasant effects of lead poisoning and reduce the massive global costs it brings.
32. How does the author describe the lead problem in paragraph 2
A. By listing some numbers. B. By analyzing hidden causes.
C. By making an interesting comparison. D. By explaining its working principle.
33. What can we learn about lead’s harm from the text
A. Lead enters poor countries in one way.
B. Lead leaking has been avoided in all the countries.
C. Lead will definitely not harm anymore.
D. Lead poisoning may make poor societies poorer.
34. What can be done to solve lead poisoning in developing countries
A. Fixing these used batteries. B. Reducing the cost of recycling lead.
C. Ignoring the illegal use of lead. D. Putting certain effort and money.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. The Impacts of Lead Poisoning on Man.
B. The Global Lead Poisoning Problem.
C. The Ways to Solve Lead Problem.
D. The Benefits of Using Electric Vehicles.

It was a summer evening. Alex, who lived in a suburban neighborhood, was getting ready for bed when he heard the sound of fire alarms and screams coming from the outside. He quickly realized that there was a fire in his neighborhood and that his neighbors might be in danger.
He looked outside and saw that one of his neighbors’ houses was on fire. He knew that he had to act quickly to help his neighbors. After calling 911, he ran outside and heard his neighbors’ little son crying inside their burning house. “He must be quite scared,” Alex thought.
Alex quickly assessed the situation and found that the house was almost surrounded by flames (火焰). The best way out was through the front door, but it was blocked by fire as well. He knew that he had to find another way to help the boy escape.
He ran back to his house, grabbed a ladder and then rushed toward his neighbors’ house. He placed the ladder against the second-story window and managed to help the little boy climb down to safety. Once the boy was safe on the ground, Alex climbed up into the burning house again to see if anyone else was trapped.
As he made his way through the smoke, he heard cries for help from a bedroom on the third floor. He quickly ran up the stairs and found an elderly woman who was too weak to move. Alex quickly picked her up and carried her down the stairs to safety. By this time, many firemen had arrived, and they managed to put out the flames.
Looking around, Alex saw that other houses in the neighborhood were also on fire. He realized that the fire was spreading quickly and that more people needed help. Without hesitation, Alex joined those firemen, who were working tirelessly to put out the flames. He helped elderly neighbors, families with young children, and even pets.

(Text 10)
W: Good evening. I’m honored to have my voice heard to make a difference in the lives of those little birds that share our city. My name is Christina. I’m an enthusiastic bird-watcher. Because we cut down too many trees in the nearby areas, many birds now find places within the city to live. The most common is the area behind the large advertisement boards on the poles. It’s a natural choice for the birds because the poles are similar to trees, tall and far from dangers on the ground. The surprising thing is that there are likely more than five or six kinds of birds living together at each place. While trying to learn more about these birds, I find that there have not been any consistent studies or monitoring of them. Their eating habits, adaptation to life in the city, diseases, death rate, and such other information are not available. I’d like to suggest that a program be started to study these birds. It could be convenient to employ bird-watchers to do the initial studies.

M: I don’t have lunch. Lunch makes me sleepy. I train all through the day until 3:00.

W: Good evening everyone. I’m Fiona. With us tonight is Mark, a famous local artist. Thanks for joining us, Mark.
M: Thank you, Fiona.
W: Have you done live drawing before Is there more pressure to draw in front of an audience
M: Yes, I have done live drawing before. It’s always fun. I often draw pictures in pubs, and people always come over for a look and a chat.
W: I know that you’ve drawn pictures on many things, including maps and the covers of books and magazines. What’s something you haven’t drawn on yet, but really want to
M: I’d like to draw on personal diaries people have kept over the years and draw the owner on it.
W: Fantastic. Could you also tell us where your inspirations come from
M: Most are from the people I’ve met and talked to when I was traveling. I always dreamed of traveling around the world and creating a series of drawings about different cities in the world.

W: Hello, this is Carl’s Commercial Cleaning. May I help you
M: Yes. I’m calling to ask about the cleaner position. Is it still available
W: Yes, it is. We mainly work with small stores in the area and the job is to clean the storefront windows.
M: I know. You said that in the ad. Do I need work experience
W: No, we offer on-the-job paid training. As a company car is provided, you must have a driver’s license and a good driving record. You also need to have a smartphone for communication.
M: Sure thing. Can I ask about the pay
W: Certainly. It’s 10 to 12 dollars per hour plus tips.
M: Okay. Do you have other requirements
W: Our employees must be dependable and be able to lift heavy things and stand long hours at a time.
M: No problem.
W: Good. Can you come tomorrow afternoon at two for an interview
M: Okay.

M: Good morning, can I help you
W: Yes, I’ve got a reservation. My name is Hillary Langley.
M: Just a moment, please. How do you spell your last name
W: L-A-N-G-L-E-Y. Langley.
M: Well, I’m sorry, but we don’t seem to have a reservation for you.
W: There must be some mistake. I’m attending a conference in the city and my secretary told me that the conference organizer made the reservation for me.
M: I see. No, I’m sorry. You are not booked in here.
W: Well, but can you find me a single room anyway
M: I’m afraid there’s nothing available at the moment.
W: Look, I really need a room here. Can I talk to your manager
M: The manager is away on business. But, well, I may be able to help you if you could wait and prepare to check in after two in the afternoon. We’ll have some rooms at that time.
W: That’d be very kind of you. Could you give me a call when you have a room available I’ll just wander around and have some coffee.
M: Certainly. Would you please give me your phone number
W: Sure, here’s my card, thanks.

After hours of effort, fortunately, the fire was finally put out. Alex breathed a sigh of relief, excited tears streaming down his cheeks. His neighbors who lived through the fire couldn’t help but thank him and the firefighters for their timely rescue. The gentle moonlight was shinning on everyone’s face, recording this extraordinary night. Exhaustion began to set in, but a flush of warmth surged through Alex’s mind. Having made sure everyone was safe, he quietly left the scene, went back to his room and climbed into his bed to enjoy a sound sleep.
When he woke up the next morning, he found his action didn’t go unnoticed by his school. A call from his principal came announcing he was awarded the title of School Hero. “But for your bravery, the neighbourhood would have suffered great losses,” the principal expressed his admiration. Joy of being recognized welled up in Alex’s heart. But for him, the greatest award was that he had made a difference in others’ lives. The fire also taught Alex an important lesson about the power of community. He became convinced that with kindness, bravery and willingness to help, nothing was impossible for a community.
