RESTORE AND REWILD
The 2024 Nature Restoration Law aims to restore and protect at least 20 percent of the European Union's (EU's) decreased and sea areas land by 2030. Europe is launching hundreds of bold rewilding initiatives in the following places, which leads to a lot of benefits for wildlife and people.
Apennines
Hunting, poisoning, and traffic accidents endanger some 60 Marsican bears in the central Apennines. Removing outdated fencing helps them move freely and the number of tourists is strictly controlled.
Kraansvlak
Bison (野牛) introduced to work as landscape engineers feed on trees invading easily destroyed sand hills. The result: a sustainable ecosystem and habitat.
Koitajoki
Work to restore 2,500 acres of peatlands (泥炭地) has been beneficial to birds, flood reduction, and ecosystems under the water, aiding fish such as Finland's last natural salmon.
Carpathian Mountains
The government's calling on sustainable tourism leads to decreasing tourist numbers. The region is seeing the return of wildlife to abandoned farmland.
CONSERVATION VS. REWILDING
These two restoration models are guided by different approaches and long-term goals.
Conservation Rewilding
Application zones Smaller, isolated habitats in need of careful management Large-scale landscape, marginal farmland, or post-industrial sites

People who visit Yao Huifen's workshop often mistake her embroidery (刺绣) for paintings or photographs. It is easy to see why. Yao's works look so realistic, like oil paintings, Chinese ink wash paintings or photographs. Many of her works have been bought by domestic and foreign museums.
The inheritor of embroidery in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, was born into a family with a long history in the art. Her grandparents and parents worked in the industry. She started to learn from her grandmother and mother when she was little. Influenced by her father, she always loved to read books about art and aesthetics (美学). She attended lectures on philosophy and art innovation when she was growing up. "You might not use the knowledge in the beginning, but what you read and what you experienced will eventually reflect in your works," says Yao.
For more than 10 years, she learned embroidery from masters of Suzhou embroidery and gradually became famous for her own skill. Elected as a promoter and ambassador of Suzhou embroidery, she has been to many countries for cultural communication, including the United States, France and Italy.
Like many intangible cultural heritage items, Suzhou embroidery faces the problem of finding young people to pass the craft down. The huge input of time and energy required to learn embroidery, Yao admits, has scared away many young people. However, she takes it as her responsibility to attract and train enough inheritors. She cooperated with colleges in Suzhou to open an embroidery course and teach the students for free. Yao has been teaching embroidery lovers at her workshop for many years. Some of her students have set up their own workshops and started to teach others themselves.
"Traditional handicrafts need to conform (顺应) to the current aesthetics and cannot linger on the standards of old times. Embroidery techniques should also be improved continuously." Yao suggests that embroiderers should open up new horizons instead of working in workshops all day long. She visits art exhibitions and museums at every opportunity when she goes to big cities.
24. What is the author's purpose in writing the first paragraph
A. To compare embroidery with photos.
B. To list some mistaken views of embroidery.
C. To highlight Yao Huifen's extraordinary skill.
D. To clarify the differences between embroidery and paintings.
25. According to Yao, why are young people unwilling to learn embroidery
A. They lack interest in it. B. They find it effort-consuming.
C. They consider it less profitable. D. They have a different taste for beauty.
26. Which of the following words can best describe Yao Huifen
A. Persistent and modest. B. Devoted and disciplined.
C. Determined and ambitious. D. Responsible and selfless.
27. What can we infer from the text
A. Yao Huifen prefers working in big cities.
B. Embroidery is gradually regaining its fame.
C. Yao Huifen has a talent in teaching embroidery.
D. Yao Huifen is struggling to inherit Suzhou embroidery.
C
It goes without saying that hard physical labor wears you out, but what about hard mental labor "Influential theories suggested that fatigue (疲劳) is a sort of illusion cooked up by the brain to make us stop whatever we are doing and turn to a more gratifying activity," says Mathias Pessiglione, a researcher in Paris, France. "But our findings show that cognitive work results in a true functional transformation—the accumulation of toxic substances—so fatigue would indeed be a signal that makes us stop working but for a different purpose: to preserve the integrity of brain functioning."
Pessiglione and colleagues wanted to understand what mental fatigue really is. They used magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to monitor brain chemistry over the course of a workday. They studied two groups of people: those who needed to think hard and those who had relatively simple cognitive tasks.
They saw signs of fatigue, only in the group doing hard mental work. Those in that group also exhibited in their choices a change toward options of proposing rewards in a short time with minimal effort. Critically, they also had higher levels of glutamate (谷氨酸) in the brain's prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层). Together with earlier evidence, the scientists say this supports the hypothesis that the accumulation of glutamate makes further activation of the prefrontal cortex more costly, such that cognitive control is more difficult after a mentally tough workday.
So, is there some way to overcome this limitation of our brain's ability to think hard "Not really, I'm afraid," Pessiglione said. "I would employ good old recipes: rest and sleep! There is good evidence that glutamate is removed from the brain during sleep."
There may be other practical implications of the findings. For example, the researchers say, monitoring the prefrontal cortex could help to detect severe mental fatigue. Such an ability may help adjust work agendas to avoid burnout. Pessiglione also advises people to avoid making important decisions when they're tired.
28. What does the underlined word "gratifying" in paragraph 1 mean
A. Relaxing. B. Complex. C. Temporary D. Rewarding.
29. What did the group performing hard mental work exhibit in the study
A. Fewer signs of mental fatigue.
B. Greater motivation and effort.
C. Higher efficiency in complex tasks.
D. Stronger preference for immediate rewards.
30. What do we know about the accumulation of glutamate
A. It causes a sense of peacefulness
B. It enhances brain function in a limited way.
C. It signals the brain is emptying its mental energy
D. It decreases the cost of prefrontal cortex activation.
31. What is Pessiglione's advice for those overwhelmed by mentally demanding tasks
A. Remove them from the work agenda.
B. Reduce the complexity of all cognitive tasks
C. Schedule strategic breaks to allow for recovery.
D. Apply technology to monitoring the brain activity
D
It's not easy to be a customer service agent—particularly when the customers are so angry about a product that they want to yell at you over the phone. That's why a certain home audio system maker hires an AI start-up to provide it with a customer service program powered by generative artificial intelligence (GenAI).
In recent years, the customer service industry has become famed for driving customers mad with its use of technology. Because it is expensive for firms to use humans to solve their customers' problems, they make the process as inefficient as possible by forcing customers to press an extremely confusing combination of numbers or chat with a bot that recites prepackaged responses.
Now entrepreneurs are betting that GenAI can make it all less awful. Unlike traditional AI customer service, GenAI bots do not echo routine responses to narrow questions. Instead, they create their own responses informed by the firms' training materials and previous customer service interactions.
That raises two tricky questions. Advocates for the technology say that customers will no longer have to wait endlessly and point out that programs will be fluent in many languages and have easier-to-understand accents than foreign call center agents. Customers, though, are yet to be convinced: 64% of those surveyed by Gartner said they would prefer it if companies didn't use GenAI for customer service, mostly because they worried it would make it even more difficult to reach a real person on the phone. What is more, GenAI bots have a tendency to project (表现) complete confidence in their responses even when they are wrong, which could cause chaos. Earlier this year Air Canada was forced to repay a customer who was incorrectly promised a discount by the airline's AI chatbot.
A second question is what all this means for the call center agents. It is predicted that GenAI will lead to a 20%—30% reduction in customer service jobs by 2026. For now, Mr. Goeller says ClearSource is focusing on using GenAI to help train its human agents. But he adds, "I would be hiding my head in the sand if I said GenAI wouldn't replace people."
32. What is GenAI's advantage over traditional customer service according to the passage
A. It is more curious and more multilingual.
B. It is more intelligent and more interactive.
C. It is politer and more communicative.
D. It is more cost-effective and more welcoming.
33. Why do most customers favor customer service agents instead of GenAI
A. They find it challenging to deal with GenAI.
B. They still value human-to-human contact.
C. They believe it will not be easy to understand.
D. They worry about falling victim to its efficiency.
34. What can be inferred from the passage about GenAI in customer service
A. It struggles to bridge the language gap.
B. It becomes the major concern for customer service agents.
C. It is only problematic in the highly regulated industry.
D. It completely removes human agents from customer service.
35. What is the writer's purpose in discussing the role of GenAI
A. To present the analysis of functions of it.
B. To argue its replacement for customer service agents.
C. To explore the impact of it on customer service.
D. To promote the dominance of it in customer service.

Green Is Good
Planting and growing things offers a lot more than fresh vegetables and flowers. Working in a nice outdoor space can help you control weight, help you stay fit, and sharpen your mind—and that's just for starters. There are more advantages.
It's a fun workout.
36 But if you find the idea of working in a garden a bit dull, knowing it's doing you good physically might make it more entertaining. You plant seeds, pull up weeds, move pots, and push a lawnmower etc. 37 Even better, whatever your age, it is an activity with a purpose—one that might keep you in motion longer than traditional exercise.
It reduces your risk of heart disease.
Even though gardening may not involve high-intensity exercise, it still provides heart-health benefits. 38 The benefits come from a combination of physical exercise and the stress reduction that "playing in the dirt" provides.
39
Having dirt under your fingernails may be a sign of poor hygiene (卫生), but scientists say it could also be a mark of good health. Thanks to beneficial bacteria found in soil, gardening may improve your immune system, helping you get sick less and fight off infections easier, according to research that includes a 2015 study published in the international journal Immuno Targets and Therapy.
It increases co-ordination and strength.
Hand and finger strength, flexibility and coordination are essential for everyday tasks like opening jars, carrying packages and picking up children. 40
A. It boosts your immune system.
B. It helps you stay fit physically and psychologically.
C. In fact, gardening can contribute to reducing the risk of a heart attack.
D. It's wonderful to get out in the garden on a beautiful day to give it a tidy.
E. Gardening is a great way to maintain those fine motor (肌肉运动的) skills and muscles.
F. The gardening tasks actually provide a whole-body workout for adults over 65 years old.
G. More than just good exercise for your body, gardening provides a workout for your brain.

My parents were always against me owning my own pet, afraid of the mess it would make or that I would quickly lose interest in taking care of it, but we made a compromise: I could volunteer at a local pet shelter on the weekends to test my sense of responsibility and dedication. That was how I first came to volunteer at the Avondale pet shelter and—more importantly—where I met my future best friend, Chocolate.
One hot August afternoon, my boss Charlie told me that they were bringing in a young black Labrador Retriever and that I'd be its primary caretaker. An hour after our conversation, in came Chocolate—a beautiful dog with shining brown fur and amazing blue eyes. At about 3 months old, I expected him to be a lot more energetic and playful, but he immediately backed and lay down at the back of his pen (围栏).
I asked Charlie what was the matter with him. He replied that Chocolate had a genetic problem which caused him to be born with a short tail, leading potential owners to think there was something wrong with him, so the breeder felt that they had no choice but to give up the puppy to the shelter.
He was overlooked and underappreciated. I felt very angry at the thought that an otherwise healthy dog could be thrown away so easily. At the same time, I felt a deep sympathy for this dog who had been cheated out of the love and attention he deserved. It was at this moment that I resolved to give Chocolate as much love and attention as I could while working as a volunteer.
Although Chocolate was reluctant and shy at first, eventually through enough treats and play he slowly came around and warmed up to me. Soon enough, whenever I came around his pen to let him out for his turn of walks and play, Chocolate was always excited and jumping with joy.

根据Apennines部分尾句中的the number of tourists is strictly controlled可知,亚平宁山脉严格控制游客数量;根据Carpathian Mountains部分中的"The government's calling on sustainable tourism leads to decreasing tourist number."
根据第一段中的mistake her embroidery for paintings or photographs和Yao's works look so realistic, like oil paintings, Chinese ink wash paintings or photographs.
The huge input of time and energy required to learn embroidery, Yao admits, has scared away many young people."
However, she takes it as her responsibility to attract and train enough inheritors. She cooperated with colleges in Suzhou to open an embroidery course and teach the students for free."可知,姚惠芬认为传承苏州刺绣是她的责任,并且她与苏州的大学合作,开设刺绣课程,免费教授学生以吸引并培养足够多的传承人,这种为可以体现出她的责任感和无私奉献的精神。故选D项。
27. 答案:D
解析:推理。第四段提到姚惠芬正致力于克服刺绣传承难题,例如attract and train enough inheritors、open an embroidery course、teach the students for free,由此可推断姚惠芬正在为继承和推广苏绣而努力。故选D项。
28. 答案:A
根据画线词前的fatigue is a sort of illusion cooked up by the brain to make us stop whatever we are doing可知,疲劳是大脑产生的一种错觉,当身体感到疲惫时,大脑会让我们停止正在做的事情。 故选A项。
They saw signs of fatigue, only in the group doing hard mental work ... a change toward options of proposing rewards in a short time with minimal effort."
根据第三段中的"the accumulation of glutamate makes further activation of the prefrontal cortex more costly, such that cognitive control is more difficult after a mentally tough workday"可知,谷氨酸的积累会使前额叶皮层的激活成本更高,认知控制变得更困难。
I would employ good old recipes: rest and sleep! There is good evidence that glutamate is removed from the brain during sleep." Pessiglione also advises people to avoid making important decisions when they're tired."
Unlike traditional AI customer service, GenAI bots do not echo routine responses to narrow questions. Instead, they create their own responses... customer service interactions."
64% of those surveyed by Gartner said... mostly because they worried it would make it even more difficult to reach a real person on the phone."
A second question is what all this means for the call center agents. It is predicted that GenAI will lead to a 20%—30% reduction in customer service jobs by 2026."
But if you find the idea of working in a garden a bit dull (但如果你觉得在花园里工作有点无聊)"可知,本空与下文为转折关系。D项"It's wonderful to get out in the garden on a beautiful day to give it a tidy.(在一个美丽的日子里到花园里打扫一下真是太好了)"与下文形成转折,符合语境。
You plant seeds, pull up weeds, move pots, and push a lawnmower etc. (你播种、拔草、搬花盆、推割草机等等)"可知,本空应说明这些园艺活动有什么好处。由下文"Even better, whatever your age, it is an activity with a purpose—one that might keep you in motion longer than traditional exercise. (更棒的是,无论你的年龄多大,它都是一项有目的的活动——一种可能会让你比传统运动保持更长时间的运动)"可知,F项"The gardening tasks actually provide a whole-body workout for adults over 65 years old. (园艺工作实际上为65岁以上的成年人提供了全身锻炼)"承上启下,符合语境。故选F项。

第四部分 写作
第一节
Dear Bob,
How is everything going I'm writing to share with you a great experience.
Recently, our school has built a labor practice base, which has become a favorite place for me and all my classmates. Last week, we participated in the labor practice actively. At the base, with the instructions of our teacher, we planted various vegetables and flowers, and learned how to take care of them. Looking at the plants that we planted, we experienced a great sense of achievement.
Not only did this experience allow us to learn practical skills, but also it made us appreciate the hard work of farmers. I really enjoyed it and hope we can have more experience like this in the future.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
Paragraph 1:
As time passed by, the connection between Chocolate and I grew stronger and stronger. The grassland of the shelter often witnessed heartwarming and harmonious scenes where a girl and a dog chased after each other, leisurely enjoying sunshine's caress. With my company and care, Chocolate's previous shyness and timidity gave way to curiosity and enthusiasm. So attached was he to me that he even bit my trousers to stop my pace when I had to head home. Magically, whenever I approached him, my heart would brim with warmth and affection, a sense of responsibility to protect him rising deep down. Perceiving him as my best friend, I resolved to attend to him well and sheltered him from any potential harm.
Paragraph 2:
One day, Charlie said Chocolate must find a home soon or he would be removed. The news struck me like a bolt from the blue, making my heart sink with deep concern that he would be ruthlessly abandoned again. However, it suddenly struck me that I could be Chocolate's owner. Filled with eagerness and anticipation, I pleaded with my parents to allow me to keep Chocolate. Beyond my wildest dreams, they approved of my request, telling me "Honey, your unconditional love and continuous devotion to Chocolate eventually made us change our original idea." Now, it is a blessing that Chocolate has become my family member and it is he that awakens me to the realization that nothing can be a greater delight than dedicating love and reaping trust in reward.

W: Certainly. What kind of sandwich
M: A beef one.

W: Do you know the date of our monthly meeting has changed
M: Yes, it was scheduled this Wednesday, but it's been postponed for a week.
W: Not bad. We can have enough time to prepare our report.
Text 4
W: Are you busy this weekend My friends and I are having a barbecue. We'd love you to stop by.
M: That sounds fun. But I can't eat meat recently due to some health problems.
W: I know. That's why I'll prepare some special dishes for you.
Text 5
W: I can't figure this out. The monitor of my computer went black. I've shut down the computer twice but it didn't work.
M: It sounds like there's a problem with the display. You should turn to someone from the technology department.
Text 6
W: Hi, I'm calling to see if your restaurant can hold sixty people. My company gives out awards to employees every year, and I'm in charge of the event.
M: I am not sure whether our chef could handle such a large group. I'll talk to him and see what he thinks.
W: All right. Here is my phone number, 501-245-8792. Could you call me back after lunch I have to attend a client meeting this morning.
M: Sure.

M: Many people might think group sports like soccer don't have the same level of recognition as individual sports in the Olympics. However, it was really honorable to win a medal in the Olympic Games, especially twice.
W: I see. Since you retired last year, you've been working as head coach of Tottenham Hotspur. Could you tell us how you will lead your team this season
M: We have to struggle with very strong competitors to stay in the league. As we usually do, well come up with flexible strategies based on the strengths and weaknesses of each team.
W: Is there anything that you expect your team to achieve this season besides medals
M: Sure. I hope my team members can have better cooperation and compete as one. That's a top priority.
Text 9
W: So, Mike, what is the Slow Food movement
M: Well, it's a reaction to fast food and fast modern lifestyles. The movement was started by an Italian called Carlo Petrini. He organized it because a fast food restaurant had opened near the Spanish Steps in Rome. He felt it was the ruin of many valuable traditional things and he tried to promote healthier ways of eating and living.
W: So, Slow Food just means healthier food, doesn't it
M: Not exactly. I think it's more about our lifestyles. We're always in such a hurry. We don't have enough time to enjoy our lives.
W: Fast food companies advertise their food is healthy. How would you answer that
M: It may be right in a way, but for me, the problem is that wherever you sit down for a meal, whether in France or China, what you're given is too similar. It makes eating and life boring. Traditional food isn't going to be lost completely, but we do want as many people as possible to enjoy it.
W: So, let's see if I've understood you. The movement's main object is to improve the way we live, isn't it
M: Exactly. It's not just about food. It's about how we live and finding time to enjoy our lives.
Text 10
M: Hello everyone. My name's Sandy Duffy and I'm here to tell you about my job as a video game writer. I work with game developers and designers to think of good stories, and I write all the dialogue in the game by myself. When I was in the secondary school, I never imagined that I would do this job! I played the violin and that was what I planned to do as my job. But I had an accident when I was playing basketball and hurt my hand, so I had to think of doing something else. My mother wanted me to be a journalist, but I didn't think it was for me. I didn't know what to study at university. I was good at lots of science subjects, including Physics and Maths, but I also loved entertaining people and I was good at Art. In the end, I went to a film school where I studied lighting, special effects, how to use a camera... all that! It was there that I started to think about working in the video game industry.
People also ask me what I like best about being a video game writer. Well, the money is good and it's quite exciting. Just last night, for example, I was at a big dinner where they were giving prizes for new games. But what I love most is the fact that I get on so well with everyone in the company. That's what makes my job so much fun.
