①Cherries have become one of China’s favorite fruits. This winter we see them in almost every fruit shop. Most of them come from Chile by ship. It can take up to 30 days for them to reach us in China. Have you ever wondered how they are able to stay fresh after such a long journey at sea
②We have a technology called Controlled Atmosphere (CA). The technology is based on an interesting rule. Fruits and vegetables still “breathe” after being picked. In a normal environment, they interact (相互作用) with the air. It makes them go bad faster. Microorganisms (微生物) in the air also speed up the process.
③However, with CA technology, we can create a safer environment for fruits and vegetables. We achieve this by lowering the concentration (浓度) of O2 in the storage (存储) area. This helps to slow down their metabolism (代谢). At the same time, the amount of CO2 rises. Sometimes, other gases like Na are also added to the environment in small amounts. The aim is to “put these fruits and vegetables to sleep.”
④The idea of CA technology is not new. It goes back to the 1800s. In the 1920s, Franklin and Cyril of Cambridge University researched fruit “breath”. It led to the world’s first commercial (商业化的) apple storage using the “gas storage” technique in 1929.
⑤The technology was further improved by Robert, a professor at Cornell University. He visited Cambridge in the late 1930s to study the work of Franklin and Cyril. He brought his new knowledge back to New York. In his research, Robert tried to work out how to make the local apples stay fresh for a longer time. As a result of his work, apples could last until the spring.
⑥Today, CA technology has found its way into many aspects of our lives. It plays a big role in large cold storage areas. It’s like a magical guard that helps keep all kinds of products fresh for a longer time. Even in the flower industry, CA technology makes a difference. It helps flowers to look fresh for long-distance transportation. When they arrive at our homes, they are still in perfect condition.

In today’s world, AI teachers are becoming more common in schools. Some people think they are great, while others worry about their influence. Let’s explore the role of AI in education and see if we can think critically (批判性地) about it.
AI teachers can do many things that human teachers can’t. For example, they can work for 24 hours a day without getting tired. This means they can provide extra help to students whenever they need it. Imagine a student who needs to practice math late at night, an AI teacher can be there to help!
How can AI teachers provide personalized learning They can change their teaching style to match each student’s needs. If a student learns better with pictures, the AI can show more pictures. If a student needs more practice, the AI can give more exercises.
Some people worry that AI teachers might replace human teachers. But the truth is, AI teachers and human teachers can work together. For example, in rural schools, where there may not be enough teachers, AI can help solve the problem. It can teach subjects that are hard to find teachers for, like foreign languages or advanced math.
However, we must remember that AI teachers are just tools. They can’t replace the warmth and care of a human teacher. A human teacher can understand a student’s feelings and help them in ways that AI can’t.
In conclusion, AI teachers can be both a friend and a foe. It depends on how we use them. If we use them wisely, they can help students learn better. If we don’t, they might cause more problems than they solve.

B.AI teachers can replace human teachers completely.
C.AI teachers can work together with human teachers.
D.AI teachers can teach in places where there are enough teachers.
33.What is the purpose of the example about rural schools
A.To show that AI teachers can teach any subject.
B.To show that AI teachers are better than human teachers.
C.To show that AI teachers can only teach in rural schools.
D.To explain how AI teachers can help where there are not enough teachers.
34.What is the writer’s attitude toward AI teachers
A.Excited. B.Worried. C.Neutral (中立的). D.Interested.

Life for the old is changing quickly because of technology. While some find joy in these changes, others face difficulties.
Many seniors are discovering fun ways to use technology. Free online classes let them learn painting, gardening, or even how to use smartphones. For example, 72-year-old Grandma Zhang recently learned to make digital (数字的) birthday cards for her grandchildren. Video apps like WeChat help families stay connected. “I see my grandson’s face every day though he studies abroad,” said Mr. Li, 68, with a smile. Smartwatches are also popular—they check heart rates and remind users to take medicine. Some hospitals even let patients talk to doctors online, saving time for those who have trouble walking.
However, not everything is easy. About 40% of people over 65 say technology changes too fast. Many have a hard time with small phone text, forget passwords, or worry about online tricks. “I once lost 500 yuan on my phone. Now I’m scared to use my phone,” shared Auntie Wang.
To help, communities are taking action. Young volunteers teach seniors how to use phones safely every weekend. In Beijing, a 16-year-old boy named Xiaoming became a “tech-teacher” for his neighbors. “Mr. Chen learned to send emojis (表情)! He sends me a thumbs-up after each lesson,” Xiaoming said proudly. The government also opened special “tech-cafes” with large-screen computers and friendly guides.
As 5G networks reach more places, even villages are joining the digital age. The key is to make technology kind to people of all ages. After all, today’s young “phone experts” will one day be seniors (较年长者) too. By working together, every age can enjoy the benefits of a connected world. Digital life not only brings us joy but also prepares us for future jobs. Many jobs today require computer and internet skills. So, let’s enjoy digital life wisely, stay safe, and keep a balance. This way, we can make the most of it and be ready for the future.

There is a special subject called biomimicry (仿生学), which means “copying nature”. Actually, nature is always our best teacher. It teaches us a lot and we learn from it to solve difficulties.
For example, in order to increase the speed of the train, researchers tried many ways, but the results were not good. An engineer who also happened to be a birdwatcher got a good idea when watching how a kingfisher (翠鸟) was able to move smoothly between the air and the water. He believed we could remodel (重塑) the nose of the engine using the shape of the kingfisher's mouth to achieve the goal of increasing the speed. The result Now a special kind of train travels at higher speed than before and uses less energy.
Designs inspired (激发) by nature are not new. The Wright brothers created their first plane by studying the flight of birds. But in recent years, teams of engineers and researchers worldwide have been studying the way of winged creatures to come up with designs for even more perfect vehicles.
Bird is one of the commonest examples that we learn from nature. Biomimicry can inspire creativity and imagination, improving new inventions. A report showed that 85% of workers could see at least 10% of their tasks affected by AI in some way. And how can students make sure their skills stay valuable in a world that feels like it’s being taken over by computers Here are the experts’ suggestions.
Work on your people skills. AI can summarize (总结) an article and program a computer, but it can’t win over a customer or stop a fight. So, try to get experience in jobs where you work with people — including difficult people! You could do this by working as a waiter or volunteering at a nursing home.
Learn lots of things, or become an expert. If you have just one skill, you could be in trouble if AI gets really good at it. So students should consider taking extra (额外的) courses besides their main study courses. If you do focus on (关注) one area, just ensure you know more about it than AI does!
Show you can do big, creative things AI can’t do. While AI can do long, boring tasks like comparing lots of information, it doesn’t push companies to develop new ideas or improve. And even if AI does the boring work, humans will still be needed to organize the projects in which AI is used.
Develop adaptability. We can’t know for certain what the world of work will look like in the future — so the best skill to develop may be adaptability. You can make yourself better at this by looking for new experiences, like studying abroad or even taking courses, which force you to change to get used to new situations!
The future of work with AI is challenging. But students can change and succeed. With AI’s help, you can learn more efficiently and solve problems more easily Face the difficulties and work hard, and you’ll make the journey into the AI-driven future be a step towards a better life.

A painting created by a robot named Ai-Da was sold at an art auction last Thursday for $1.08 million. The painting is the most expensive artwork ever sold that was created by a human-like robot.
The painting is called “AI God: Portrait of Alan Turing”. Mr. Turing was an English math genius who came up with many of the important ideas that led to modern-day computers. He was an important part of the early thinking about Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The portrait of Mr. Turing was sold at an auction at Sotheby’s in New York. It was expected to sell for $120,000 to $180,000. But there was a lot of interest, and it wound up selling for far more.
The painting is the work of Ai-Da, a human-like robot that’s able to paint and take part in conversations. The idea for Ai-Da came from Aidan Meller, an Englishman who used to run an art gallery. He worked with a group of nearly 30 people to build and program Ai-Da.
Ai-Da’s name is clever – the first part of the name is “AI”. But Ai-Da was also named after Ada Lovelace, a famous mathematician in the 1800s. Ms. Lovelace is considered the world’s first computer programmer.
Ai-Da is designed to look like a woman with short black hair. Cameras allow the robot to “see”. Ai-Da paints with a robotic arm which can hold a pen or paintbrush. Using AI tools similar to ChatGPT, Ai-Da is also able to talk. This allows the robot to do interviews and even answer questions about its artwork.

January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This smart program can solve math problems, write code (代码), and answer questions like top models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4o, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $5.58 million (1/70 of OpenAI’s cost) and used 2,048 computer chips (芯片) for two months to make it. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.
DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths. Other AIs need lots of prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. In a global math test, it got 79.8% right, a little higher than OpenAI’s model. A simple version (版本) of R1 can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments with R1 cost $10 instead of $300 with other AIs. Even Meta (a famous U.S. tech company) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
U.S. tech companies are worried. Meta planed to spend $65 billion more on AI research. Experts said China was catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a “big step forward”, confirming that smart ideas beat expensive tools.
As a DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.” With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.
