Crowded by defenders, Charlie Villanueva leaps toward the basket. One hand lifts the ball high, and for a moment he seems to hang in the air. Then he hammers the ball through the rim. Slam dunk! His career may look like a slam dunk, being a national champion at the University of Connecticut, and setting beginner records with the Toronto Raptors.
However, life wasn’t always easy for him. His success is due to more than his ability to play basketball and he owes much of who he is today to a skin disease called alopecia areata, which is not infectious but is caused by an error in the immune system that triggers germ-fighting cells to attack the body’s own hair-growing cells. Charlie was affected at age 10 and lost all his hair by age 12. This made him a target for bullying, leading him to withdraw and hide under caps and hoods.
With the support of his mother, Charlie found refuge in basketball. He channeled his frustrations and stress into motivation, improving his skills to the point where his talent overshadowed his condition. The bullying stopped, and his basketball career took off.
All along the way, Charlie has consistently dedicated himself to helping others. Ever since his first year as a new player, he has served as a spokesperson for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, and went on to establish the Charlie Villanueva Foundation, an organization aimed at supporting families with children suffering from alopecia and stopping all forms of bullying. As the son of immigrants from the· Dominican Republic, he has even worked towards ending poverty in that country.
Charlie inspires young people to embrace their individuality and have confidence in themselves. “We’re all unique in our own ways,” he says, encouraging them to remember that with dedication and self-belief, any dream is within reach.
24. Why is Charlie’s slam dunk mentioned in Paragraph 1

The moon has no air, no water and an extreme 250℃, but the biggest challenge for scientists to set up camp is the loose dust. It damages space suits, affects scientific equipment and makes moving around difficult.
Now scientists have come up with a possible solution, showing that moon dust could be melted to create solid roads and landing areas by using a giant lens (透镜). “You might think: Streets on the moon, who needs that ” said Prof. Jens Gunster, “But in fact it’s a kind of demand.”
Dust has destroyed previous missions, such as the Lunar Surveyor 3 spacecraft, and overcoming this challenge is urgent for NASA, which aims to establish an everlasting lunar base.
Taking building materials to the moon would be too expensive, so new solutions are needed. “You need to use what’s there and that’s simply loose dust,” said Gunster.
He, and his research team, experimented with a special material called EAC-1A, a substitute for the loose dust. They used a laser beam (激光) to heat the dust to about 1,600℃ to melt it. They then made it into triangle shapes, each about 25cm across, to create solid roads and landing areas.
The process is slow and it would take about 100 days to create a landing spot measuring 10 meters by 10 meters. Gunster said, “A lens of about 2.37m2 would be needed. But dust would still be a problem for the lens. The lens will not work sooner or later because of the accumulated (累积的) dust, so a shaking lens may help deal with this problem.”
28. What is the key problem in setting up camp on the moon according to the author
A. The loose dust. B. The high temperature.
C. The expensive material. D. The lack of water and air.
29. Which statement may the author agree with according to the text
A. Dust makes moving around the moon easily.
B. There is no need to build a road on the moon.
C. The process of construction on Earth is as slow as that on the moon.
D. Setting up an everlasting lunar base is an important task for NASA currently.
30. What does the underlined word “substitute” in Paragraph 5 mean
A. Process.B. Base. C. Replacement. D. Problem.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Solid Roads Can Be Built on the Moon
B. Building Material Will Be Taken to the Moon
C. Lens Can Be Used to Solve the Dust Problem on the Moon
D. A Permanent Lunar Base Will Be Built on the Moon

Tai chi, a traditional form of Chinese martial art that combines slow, gentle movements and postures with mindfulness, is known to increase flexibility and improve balance. Now, a new research suggests it’s better than aerobic (有氧的) exercises for lowering blood pressure in people with high blood pressure.
In the study, researchers in China employed 342 adults whose average age was 49. Roughly half the people participated in the aerobic exercise, including jogging, climbing stairs, brisk walking and cycling. The other half was trained to practice tai chi. Both groups got hour-long sessions four times a week.
After 12 months, those in the tai chi group saw bigger drops in their blood pressure than those in the aerobic exercise group. Besides, nearly 22% of the people who practiced tai chi saw their blood pressure fall to within normal range, compared with nearly 16% of people in the aerobic exercise group. Fewer patients in the tai chi group went on to develop high blood pressure than in the aerobic exercise group.
So what’s it about tai chi that helps lower blood pressure The practice tends to cause more of a response from the parasympathetic (副交感) nervous system, says Ruth Taylor-Piliae, a professor at the University of Arizona’s College of Nursing, who wasn’t involved in the study. The parasympathetic nervous system is the network of nerves that relaxes your body after periods of stress or danger.
Tai chi is appealing as it requires little space or equipment. “I think the beauty of tai chi is that you don’t have to have a special gym membership,” Taylor-Piliae says. “Once you learn tai chi, you can do it anytime, and anyplace. It does provide a calming and relaxing effect.”
Studies have also shown practicing tai chi can help reduce the risk of falls, improve balance and walking speed in older adults, and reduce depression and anxiety. “But you have to have enough tai chi,” Taylor-Piliae says. “You can’t just do it one hour, one time.”
32. What happened to those practicing tai chi during the study
A. Most got nervous more easily.
B. Some began to have normal blood pressure.
C. Many went on to develop high blood pressure.
D. Nobody went on to develop high blood pressure.
33. How did the researchers carry out the study
A. By making comparisons. B. By interviewing people.
C. By providing statistics. D. By giving examples.
34. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about
A. The professor involved in the study.
B. The response of the nervous system.
C. The network of nerves to relax your body.
D. The possible reason why tai chi helps reduce blood pressure.
35. What is Taylor-Piliae’s attitude towards tai chi
A. Critical. B. Subjective.C. Doubtful. D. Favorable.

For Sara’s family, decorating the yard was always a celebration for the New year. This year it was Sara’s father’s turn to hang colorful lights all round their roof according to family tradition.
On New Year’s Eve, light enveloped the whole house. Everything seemed to be going fine until misfortune happened: Sara’s father passed away suddenly. Sara was very sad. However, seeing the hanging lights, she was in a state of feeling happy, gaining a tiny thread of relief.
The lights reminded her of her beloved father. Taking them down meant the final connection with her father would disappear, which she wasn’t ready to accept. So she kept them. One day in March, Sara received a typed note in the mail. “Take your New Year’s lights down!” The letter read, which made Sara angry. She couldn’t hold back her anger, and shared it with her story online. Messages of support flooded into Sara’s inbox quickly. Ball Game Fun: Try it!
For the upcoming school sports festival, I highly recommend including table tennis as one of the activities, which enjoys great popularity among students.
Carrying out this activity possesses numerous remarkable advantages. Not only does it significantly enhance our hand-eye coordination, reaction speed, and concentration, but it also serves as an excellent means for us to engage in physical activity and maintain good health. Moreover, the reason why the activity can be carried out easily is that table tennis is suitable for players of all skill levels and many students show great interest in it. Therefore, organizing competitions or recreational play sessions would be relatively effortless.
I firmly believe that table tennis would be an excellent option, bringing substantial benefits to us students.

Text 10
W: Last Christmas, I was invited to Canada by my aunt Judy. I have never been to other countries. So l was so excited about the trip that I didn’t sleep well for several nights. On the day of leaving, my father thought that I might be caught in the traffic jam if I took a bus to the airport, so he drove me there. But our car broke down on the way. As the time went by, I began to worry about missing the flight. I decided to stop a car to take me to the airport. Many cars went past me with high speed before a white Bora stopped by my side. Thanks to the driver, I arrived at the airport just in time at 1:
50 p.m. to catch my plane which would leave ten minutes later. It was my first flight and I was a bit nervous. When the plane was taking off, my ears felt funny.l was really sick. Luckily it was all over after a while. On my window seat, I could enjoy the bird’s-eye view of beautiful cities, land, grass, forests and blue sea. Sometimes our plane flew right over the white clouds. Unluckily I didn’t see any hills. Maybe I missed them. What a wonderful view!
