“A lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth can get its boots on.” said Mark Twain. In today’s Internet world of “fake (假的) news,” lies spread even faster and the truth is having trouble finding its boots.
To make matters worse, most young people get news from social media sites where facts are mixed with rumors (谣言), half-truths and complete lies. This has led to young people becoming confused. In the latest PISA, which tested 15-year-olds worldwide on academic subjects, fewer than one in ten of the examinees were reported to be able to recognize fact from opinion. A Stanford University study showed that students at all levels of education could not tell real news from fake news. In one instance, 80 percent thought that a paid advertisement was a real news story.
Fake news is spread by people who have a prejudice (偏见). They want to influence public opinion either for or against something or someone. It is important, then, for young people to recognize when they are being used and to be doubtful about online information.
Traditional media, such as newspapers and television, are still the more credible sources of information. Reporters are professional trained to look for facts, and editors have the job of making sure those facts are correct. However, if you are getting most of your information online, you have to be your own editor. In that case, the first thing to do is to look at the writer of a post. Is this person known to be objective Does the site where you read the post have a prejudice Next, look for other sources from mainstream media to make sure the information. In other words, by putting on your truth boots you won’t be fooled into chasing lies.
24. What does the writer say about young people with news around
A. They make fake news and spread it. B. They are easily fooled by fake news.
C. They get worried about their education. D. They can recognize facts from opinions.
25. What does the underlined word “credible” in the last paragraph mean
A. Primary. B. Realistic. C. Believable. D. Important.
26. According to the writer, what can help us avoid being fooled by fake news
A. Only look for news through media. B. Become a professional and trained reporter.
C. Compare the news from different sources. D. focus on the new instead of the writer.
27. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. What Should a Reporter Do
B. Who Makes and Spreads Fake New
C. How Can We Become a Newspaper Editor
D How Can We Stay Objective in Reading News

The end of the year is drawing near, and winter is ongoing. The season brings along with it strong winds and snow — an environment that’s never comfortable to be in.
This unpleasant and even frightening aspect of winter can often be seen in literature. In Shakespeare’s King Lear (1606), the king has given away his kingdom and been rejected by his two ungrateful daughters. He is out in the winter cold, suffering things that are usually reserved for the poorest and most unfortunate human beings.
The winter is bad enough for Lear, but being abandoned by his family is worse. A song from another Shakespeare play, As You Like It (1599), is fitting for this poor old man’s situation: “Blow, blow, thou winter wind,/Thou art not so unkind /As man’s ingratitude (忘恩负义)”. Here, winter is used to bring out the ugliness of inhumanity (不人道). There aren’t many things that are worse than winter, according to Shakespeare.
Once winter became less of a threat to human beings, literary works featuring it became more positive. Since Charles Dickens, the representation of the season in literature has often featured happy Christmas celebrations.
The cold of the winter weather provides a contrast to the fun going on indoors. Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (1843) was the start of this, but Christmas is still a common, cheery element in stories that feature winter scenes today. Consider the joy felt by Harry Potter and his friends in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (1997) as they sit down for their festive meal:
“Harry had never in all his life had such a Christmas dinner. A hundred fat, roast turkeys; mountains of roast and boiled potatoes; platters of chipolatas (小香肠) and so on.
It is almost as much a pleasure to read about the meal as it might have been to eat it.
Although winter still isn’t the most cheerful season in novels and poems, it’s safe to say that writers have certainly “warmed up” since Shakespeare’s days.
28. What is winter like in Shakespeare’s works
A. Pleasant. B. Comfortable. C. Stressful. D. Cruel.

B. He was an author famous for describing winter.
C. He made a turning point in the description of winter.
D. He inspired readers to experience the cheerful winter.
30. What do the winter scenes in J. K. Rowling’s works bring
A. Magic. B. Joy. C. Cold. D. Ugliness.

A. Science and technology. B. Fashion and lifestyle.
C. Culture and history. D. Health and medicine.

Under the soft glow of her laptop, 31-year-old Zhang Rui typed a message carefully. She followed instructions from Chinese social media: "You are a BaZi(八字) master. Analyze my fate—describe my appearance, important life events, and financial luck. I am female, born on June 17, 1993, at 4:42 a.m. in Hangzhou."
DeepSeek R1, China's most advanced AI, responded in just 15 seconds. The screen filled with detailed analysis, highlighting that 2025-2027 would be a "fire period" for her career. "I treat DeepSeek like a life advisor," Zhang said. For many Chinese, this AI offers quick comfort instead of traditional therapy(治疗), which is often expensive and hard to access. " It’s my immediate solution when emotions overwhelm me."
Zhang is not alone. As DeepSeek competes with OpenAI globally, young people in China are using AI to bring back ancient fortune-telling. WeChat Index shows over 2 million posts mentioned "DeepSeek fortune-telling" in February 2025. Users share AI-generated(AI生成的) readings, test different predictions, and even study old spiritual(精神上的) books with AI help.
This trend reflects rising social anxiety. After COVID, youth unemployment reached 21% in 2023 and stayed at 16% in 2024. Economic growth slowed to its lowest in decades. Many young Chinese call themselves the "last generation," unsure about marriage and having children due to uncertain futures.
"During economic slowdowns, people seek control through spiritual practices," says religion professor Ting Guo. In China, this often happens privately through phones or computers.
Rachel Zheng, a 32-year-old, uses DeepSeek for writing ideas. She asked how to connect natural energy with her work. The AI suggested writing a psychological thriller about life cycles, even recommending styles and themes. Her mother now also asks AI for health advice. "Master D has become our family's trusted helper," Zheng says, using a popular nickname for the AI.
Unlike traditional fortune-tellers, DeepSeek is free and available 24/7. Users praise its detailed BaZi analysis compared to ChatGPT, which gives general answers and is not always accessible in China. "DeepSeek analyzes the details and makes specific predictions," Zheng notes.
As DeepSeek grows, it becomes more than a tool—it bridges ancient wisdom with modern technology, creating a new cultural trend among China's youth.
32. What can we infer from the underlined sentence in paragraph 2
A. The AI’s role as a prompt coping mechanism. B. Her distrust of traditional fortune-tellers.
C. The AI’s limitations in emotional guidance. D. Her belief in AI as a divine being.
33. What might be the reason for the popularity of DeepSeek R1 in fortune-telling
A. Economic growth directly leads to increased demand for AI tools.
B. Uncertain economic futures drive young people to seek non-traditional forms of support.
C. AI technologies are primarily used for entertainment during economic downturns.
D. The government actively promotes AI adoption to address unemployment.
34. Why do many Chinese users prefer DeepSeek R1 to ChatGPT for fortune-telling
A. It provides more personalized and culturally relevant predictions.
B. It has a longer history of integrating traditional practices.
C. It is not obtainable in China.
D. It charges lower fees for daily consultations.
35. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To compare the technical capabilities of DeepSeek R1 and ChatGPT.
B. To illustrate how Chinese youth use AI to combine traditional practices with modern needs.
C. To analyze the economic impact of AI development in China.
D. To explain the historical origins of BaZi fortune-telling.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
A majority of the people do not read the classics. Their reasons begin with the language being too difficult and end with the storyline too distant to the present context. Love for classics is obviously not at first sight. It is a gradual affair. We begin as acquaintances (泛泛之交) and eventually become close friends with private jokes between us. ___36___
Don’t be afraid to be confused.
We get it: It’s hard to power through confusion. It doesn’t feel great when a book makes you feel confused. Every reader has to start somewhere. ____37____ Instead, be proud of yourself for trying, and get excited about all the new things you’ll learn.
Research, research, research.
____38____ Researching the author — and the time and place they were writing about — can help you situate yourself during tricky passages. The author’s experience, viewpoint, and historical context might help you make the connections you might not have otherwise.
Just pick the book up.
This step is self-explanatory. While it’s not hard to just pick a book up, we know how difficult it can be to convince yourself to do so. ____39____ Take a deep breath, then leap onto the deck (甲板) of Melville’s Pequod or step cautiously through the gates of Dracula’s Castle.
Remember: there is no right answer.
There is no perfect way to read a classic text. There is no defining interpretation, no singular, exact answer. Your goal as a reader is to discover what aspects and insights are meaningful to you. Enjoy the process. ____40____ Even if your interpretation of the work isn’t quite perfect, it is still valuable!
A. Allow the book to grow with you.
B. So how does one approach a classic
C. It has some form of historical influence.
D. Before you turn to page one, do some digging.
E. Never beat yourself up for not knowing something.
F. Remind yourself that it’s a new learning opportunity.
G. Consider what confuses you, read with intention, and think critically.
