Now researchers at the University of Washington have developed a smartwatch

The project was led by Dhruv Jain, inspired by his own experience being hard of
hearing. SoundWatch uses the smartwatch’s microphone to listen out for particular sounds, sends the data to a user’
s connected phone for processing, then back to the watch to display in text what the sound is, and how loud it is.
That’s accompanied by a vibration to tell the wearer that something has been detected.(这个项目是由 Dhruv Jain

This technology provides people with a way to experience sounds that require an
action—such as getting food from the microwave when it beeps, which can improve people’s experiences and help
them feel more connected to the world,” says Jain. “But it’s not perfect of course. The app sometimes gets it wrong,
or takes too long to tell a user. However, these issues are being worked on.”(“这项技术为人们提供了一种体验

It was just like any other evening. I did the radio show, chatted with listeners and went through e mails. Except for working 35 hours a week, I spent almost my other time with my kids. Though my husband did well in taking care of them, I still wanted to get more involved in family activities.
One day, I got an e mail. The sender said her name is Winifred. She lived in the Buduburam refugee camp (难民营) in Ghana. She had to take care of three small children, but she couldn't afford to buy food or water for them. And she learned that I had adopted (收养) two African children and thought I might be concerned about the problems in Africa and give her some support.
Actually, I knew nothing about Africa. So I turned to a friend of mine for help. As a member of a charity that aimed to help poor people in Africa, he could help me make sure whether Winifred's words were true or not. Later, I learned that Winifred and her three children suffered from hungry and had no place to sleep.Although having asked for help, they didn't receive any reply. After hearing that, I decided to help this family. In addition, my friend told me many things that happened in Africa, which made me want to help more people like Winifred.
I had a picture in my head of what I thought I would see. But the reality of the Buduburam refugee camp was nothing that I could have ever prepared myself for. The local government turned a blind eye to the refugees living here. And I found Winifred and her family among more than 42,000 people crowded into 140 acres, with no clean water and toilets. Most people ate one meal a day.
Later, I returned home to Seattle where I'd never gone hungry and never lacked water, realizing how lucky I was! And I founded an organization called Point Hope to bring water and more hope to people at the Buduburam refugee camp.

For people who are deaf or hard of hearing, it can be difficult to pick out important sounds, such as knocks at the door or fire alarms. Now researchers at the University of Washington have developed a smartwatch app called SoundWatch, which identifies sounds and reminds users of them with a vibration(震动) and a visual readout.
The project was led by Dhruv Jain, inspired by his own experience being hard of hearing. SoundWatch uses the smartwatch’s microphone to listen out for particular sounds, sends the data to a user’s connected phone for processing, then back to the watch to display in text what the sound is, and how loud it is. That’s accompanied by a vibration to tell the wearer that something has been detected(检测).
“This technology provides people with a way to experience sounds that require an action—such as getting food from the microwave when it beeps, which can improve people’s experiences and help them feel more connected to the world,” says Jain. “But it’s not perfect of course. The app sometimes gets it wrong, or takes too long to tell a user. However, these issues are being worked on.”
Disability is highly personal, and Jain hopes his team can find ways for people to personalize(个性化) this app for their own specific needs. For example, people can be told about the sounds they care about- a husband’s or wife’s voice Versus(对) general speech, the back door opening versus the front door opening, and more.
28 What does “them” in paragraph 1 refer to
A. Researchers. B. Apps. C. Sounds. D. Fire alarms.
29. What is mainly discussed about SoundWatch in paragraph 2
A. How it works. B. Why it is invented.
C. Who it is intended for. D. What it can detect.
30. Which word can best describe Jain’s attitude to SoundWatch
A. Doubtful. B. Critical. C. Objective. D. Disapproving.
31. What does Jain expect SoundWatch to be
A. Affordable. B. Personally tailored
C. Multifunctional. D. Fashionably designed.

People have different ways of dealing with waste paper, specifically used newspapers. Some put them in the recycling area, while others keep them as wrappers (包装纸). While these are both good measures, a Japanese publishing company had a better idea for their end use.
The Mainichi Newspapers Co., Ltd. invented the “Green Newspaper”, which allows people to grow plants with it. This unique newspaper was published on Greenery Day, which is focused on environmental news and made of green paper with seeds placed into it. What makes it even more special is the ink (油墨) used to print words and photos, which is made from plants. The publisher advises readers to tear the used newspaper into small pieces and plant them in a container with soil. They should water them, like they would do for any plant. Within a few weeks, the seeds will grow into plants.
This brilliant concept was invented by Dentsu Inc., one of Japan’s most famous advertising agencies, which works with the publishing company on the initiative (倡议). The publisher’s belief is environmental sustainability (持续性). As its mission statement says, “The Mainichi doesn’t take action only through information, but also by solving global issues.” With joint efforts, this initiative has reached the corners of Japan and sold around millions of copies daily. Other such initiatives producing plantable paper are also seen in India and the US.
About 95 million trees are lost for producing newspapers every year. The Internet, the number of whose users stands for 62.5 percent of the population worldwide, has influenced how people read news and the print readership has dropped greatly. However, the reinvention and reimagination of this newspaper will bring about a change in the publishing industry as well as having an environmental influence.
12. What do we know about the “Green Newspaper”
A. It uses high-tech materials.
B. It provides energy for seeds.
C. It’s printed with plant-based ink.
D. It’s published to celebrate Greenery Day.
13. What message does the publisher’s mission statement convey
A. It’s easier said than done.
B. Everything comes to him who waits.
C. Many hands make light work.
D. Actions speak louder than words.
14. What’s the author’s attitude to the “Green Newspaper”
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive.
C. Indifferent. D. Negative.
15. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. About 59 million trees are lost for producing newspapers.
B. The Internet has changed the way people read news totally.
C. The popularity of the Internet leads to the fall of the print readership.
D. The “Green Newspaper” will encourage more people to protect the environment.

Two years ago, Laura Eshelman was struggling with a mental problem. And to top it off(更惨的是), she was having trouble finding work.
One day, she was leaving a downtown business where she had yet another job application rejected (拒绝). Feeling extremely disappointed, she decided to go to the Whole Foods across the street and found something for her hungry stomach.
As she crossed the street, Eshelman noticed a man, who was asking for money on the corner. His messy hair and clothing made it seem like he’d been living outside for a while. She watched as he asked a passerby for change, but she even didn’t look at him.
As Eshelman approached, the man turned his attention to her, and again he asked if he could have a little bit of money. “Leave me alone. I don’t have anything to give you. Just go away!”, Eshelman shouted, almost giving vent to (发泄) all her negative feelings. But these unkind words were just what made her feel regretful and ashamed later.
The man was obviously embarrassed as well as a little surprised. It was normal for him to be refused, but not usually in such a rude way. He just lowered his head and Eshelman continued into the grocery store. After picking up some bread and a bottle of water, she went to the checkout to pay. And it was at that moment that she found her purse, where she had put all her money and important papers, was missing.
