MVP
When Brandon had the ball, I was open. But he passed it to Cole. Cole had a great turn-around jump shot, but I was a good shot, too. In fact, we each had six points so far. But Cole was more popular, and the team fed him the ball. I must outscore Cole because I wanted to be the MVP—most valuable player.
Later, Jeff stole the ball from the Kings and passed it to me. I saw Cole running toward the basket, but no one was guarding me either. I threw the ball into the basket.
Cole slapped (拍) my hand. “Good shot, Derek.” I just smiled. Then Cole got the ball. He passed it to me and ran under the basket. I ignored (忽视) him and shot, but I failed.
“Cole was open,” said Jeff.
“So was I,” I muttered (嘟囔). But I felt upset inside.
“Hey, it’s no big deal,” said Cole. “We’re all trying to win this game. We’re a team.”
It happened fast. Cole was on the floor holding his ankle (脚踝). Coach Sanchez was there in a second and helped him to the bench. I felt my heart hammer (敲击) in my ears. Now I was going to be the MVP without a doubt.
Everything didn’t look good. Every time I took the ball, two Kings players were guarding me instead of one. The Kings believed that with Cole gone, they could shut me down and win. Cole had helped divide their attention before. I’d never thought about how much that helped me.
Now we were down by one, but time was running out. All of a sudden, more than anything, I wanted our team to take home the trophy (奖杯). I took the ball down the court and passed it to Brandon. He caught it and and hesitated. “Shoot!” I shouted. He caught it and let it fly—right into the basket. We won!
We were all jumping around when I saw Cole on the bench.
“Hey,” I said. “Great game.”
“You, too,” said Cole, slapping my back. “Great idea to pass it to Brandon. Congratulations on getting MVP.”
I’d been waiting a long time to hear those words, but they didn’t seem so important now. “Thanks,” I said. “It was a team effort.”
And I finally understood just what that meant.

I struggled to adapt when I first moved to the city. Back in my hometown, I’d spent hours exploring forests and observing birds, but here, the noise and crowds left me anxious. Then I discovered a tiny park hidden between tall buildings. It wasn’t much—just a few trees, a pond, and benches—but it became my refuge (慰藉).
One rainy afternoon, I noticed an old man feeding pigeons. He moved slowly, scattering seeds while murmuring softly. Curious, I approached him. “They’re used to me,” he smiled. “Been coming here 20 years.” He pointed to a bird with a crooked (歪的) wing. “That one’s tough. Survived storms, cats ... still sings every morning.”
Over weeks, we became friends. I went to the park regularly, and Mr. Lee taught me to recognize bird calls and shared stories of the birds there. “This place was almost torn down for parking,” he said. “We fought to save it.” His eyes sparkled with pride.
One day, construction signs appeared. My heart sank. Mr. Lee sighed, “They’re expanding the road. The pond will be filled.” I couldn’t accept it. Remembering his fight years ago, I started a petition (请愿书), gathered signatures, and even spoke at a community meeting. To my shock, the city changed its plans.
The park stayed. Mr. Lee handed me a key the next week. “For the bird feeders,” he said. “It’s your turn to care for them.” Now, I arrive early, filling feeders and watching birds. That injured one still sings, louder than ever.

Heading to a national park this summer The rich history of national parks began in 1864. More than 140 years ago, the United States created the world’s first national park.
There is no shortage of health benefits when it comes to spending time in nature, which is why the national parks are now understood to be an excellent health resource (资源) for people. Research has found that national parks can support our health by lowering blood pressure and symptoms of anxiety and depression. They support mental health, creativity, and problem solving. Spending time in nature has also been connected with increased generosity (慷慨) and cooperative (合作的) behaviors.
Over the past couple of years, researchers have spent time making connections between time spent outside and mental health. In a national park, movement, green spaces, a large amount of wildlife, breathtaking scenery, and wandering (蜿蜒的) paths contribute greatly to mental health and well-being. In fact, spending just 20 minutes outside can help someone improve concentration (专注), critical (批判的) thinking, problem solving, and relationship skills. Spending time in nature is a great way to build strong emotional connections to both nature itself, as well as other people. It’s also a great way to introduce kids to creative spaces designed for adventure, allowing them to build lifelong memories and skills that will benefit healthy minds and moods.
As you can see, national parks are an invaluable resource that should be treasured and protected for us and for our grandchildren and great grandchildren. However, not everyone thinks setting up national parks is a good idea. Some people say they attract too many visitors, who do more harm than good.
Do we need more national parks Probably not. Some experts say national parks are not as environmentally friendly as they seem. In the UK, park land is often farmed, so it’s not truly wild. National parks attract lots of tourists but these visitors often harm the environment by dropping litter, disturbing (打扰) wildlife and travelling in polluting cars. Also, national parks drive up the cost of buying or renting (出租) housing in nearby areas. Homes in the area are often bought by rich people who just stay there for holidays, instead of living there all the time. This means fewer people live in the area and businesses find it hard to survive (生存). Besides, some people don’t think we need to create parks with special status (地位) in order to look after nature. We should be protecting all our green spaces.
33.National parks can help to ________ according to the passage.
A.improve our mental health in certain ways
B.lower people’s blood pressure and creativity
C.give us more chances to play with wild animals
D.weaken connections between time spent outside and health
34.The word “contribute” in Paragraph 3 most probably means ________.
A.to help to better something B.to try to change something
C.to join together two things D.to give all the attention to
35.What can we learn from Paragraph 5
A.National parks may cause new environmental problems.
B.We need to build more national parks to protect our green spaces.
C.Rich people buy houses near the national parks to run their business.
D.National parks attract lots of tourists so local people earn a lot of money.
36.What is the passage mainly talking about
A.The history of national parks. B.The true meaning of national parks.
C.Different opinions about national parks. D.Health benefits of building national parks.

Feeling joy is good for you, not just because you’re happy in the moment. It can be saved and used again.
When you feel joyful, you’re in a positive mood (情绪), which helps you deal with challenges and solve problems. Suzy Reading, a psychologist, says experiencing joy benefits your health. It protects you from illness, and reduces pain, worry and stress. Joy spreads quickly, benefiting not only you but also those around you.
A joy journal is a special place for you to record anything that brings you joy. It’s your journal, so you can put whatever you like in it. Taking time to make a note of what’s giving you joy helps you pay attention to that experience and draw even more happiness from it.
Suzy Reading says your joy journal can help you remember happier times when you are feeling a bit sad, lonely, and worried. Turning the pages can help those same feelings of joy flood back, making you feel better. It can remind you that this moment will pass and joy will come again soon.
How do you keep a joy journal Choose a notebook and decorate (装饰) the cover. It is up to you how often you add to it—perhaps every day after school or only at weekends. You can keep all your joyful things together or divide your journal into areas such as family, friends, school, and hobbies. To best express yourself, you can write, draw, use colorful pens, and stick things in. In your joy journal, you can write lists of your favorite things: your favorite foods, TV shows, or animals, and what you like about them. You can record a moment from each day that gave you joy: who was there, what happened, and what you could see, hear, and smell. This will help you feel the joy again and remember it more easily. You could also make a joy journal with your family to record what makes you all happy.
Perhaps you are too busy to keep a joy journal every day, or you have other ways to treasure your happy moments, such as social media posts and video diaries. These are really good ways, but if possible, try writing down the things that bring a smile to your face in your joy journal.
37.How does experiencing joy benefit your health
38.What is a joy journal
39.How can you best express yourself in a joy journal
40.Would you like to keep a joy journal Why or why not (Please give two reasons.)
