The expression “down to earth”(脚踏实地) means being open and honest. It is easy to get on with someone who is down to earth. A down-to-earth person is the opposite of someone who acts important or proud.
Down-to-earth people could be important members of society. But they do not consider themselves to be better than others who are less important. A person who is filled with his own importance and pride is said to have his nose in the air.
Americans use another expression that is similar in some ways to down to earth. The expression is both feet on the ground. Someone with both feet on the ground is a person with a good understanding of reality(现实). He may have dreams, but he does not allow them to have influence on his understanding of what is real.
The opposite kind of person is one who has his head in the clouds. Someone with his head in the clouds is a person whose mind is not on what is happening in real life. Such a person may be called a day-dreamer.
When we have both our feet on the ground and when we are down to earth. We do not have our noses in the air. We act honestly and openly to others. Our lives are like the ground below us—solid(牢固的)and strong.

Each year. Lunar New Year is symbolized by one of 12 zodiac animals.
This is based on a story about the Jade Emperor trying to find a way to measure time. He told the animals they were to compete in a race. The first 12 animals to complete the race would be rewarded by having a year named after them.
2023 is the Year of the Rabbit. The last time there was Year of the Rabbit was in 2011. The next one will not be until 2035.
In the story of the Jade Emperor, the rabbit was the fourth animal to complete the race. The rabbit was so confident that he would win that he took a nap allowing three other animals to arrive before him.
In traditional Chinese Culture. Rabbits are quiet and agile (敏捷的), which suits traditional Chinese aesthetic (审美的) values of being gentle and cultivated (有教养的). There is a view in Chinese culture that rabbits are smart and gentle. This is shown by the phrase “dongrutuotu”, a Chinese idiom used to describe people who are as smart and agile as rabbits. So it is believed that people who were born in the year of the rabbit would have the characteristics including being kind, agile, quiet and responsible.

Type in “A cat wants to go to space” and ask Chat GPT to write a bedtime story. Just one second later, you’ll get the story of Max, who clawed his way past many difficulties to sing among the stars.
Developed by US company Open AI, Chat GPT has taken the internet by storm, winning 100 million users since it came out in November 2022. People can ask the robot to write stories and emails, create recipes (食谱), translate languages, and answer all kinds of questions. In its own words, it is “a language model trained in internet text to help users get human-like text.”
Compared with Siri or other chatbots (聊天机器人), Chat GPT uses a much bigger database (数据库) for training. It also uses stronger software and hardware to learn things by itself. For example, if it provides a wrong answer to your question, you can tell it the right one and it will make corrections . “It’s a totally different product,” computer scientist Liu Xiaoguang from Nankai University told Tianjin Daily. “The knowledge level Chat GPT shows is equal to an undergraduate (本科生) student. That’s why it shocked the world.”
But one big problem with Chat GPT is that it makes mistakes or even gives fake (虚假的) information. When Rezza, a 28-year-old from Indonesia, used the robot to write an essay, it “gave out nonexistent academic citations (不存在的学术引用)”, he told The Guardian. Since the robot is trained using words from the internet, it can also pick up on the internet’s biases (偏见) about certain groups. These are all things that need to be dealt with.
1. The cat story was written to _____.
A. show what creative work Chat GPT can do B. introduce a cat that wants to go to space
C. introduce a series of bedtime books D. show how robots create stories
2. According to the passage, which of the following can Chat GPT do
A. Make dishes. B. Sing songs. C. Translate texts. D. Create new languages.
3. What makes Chat GPT an excellent chatbot
a. It can learn things by itself. b. It has a big database for training.
c. It won’t give people wrong answers. d. It is smarter than any undergraduate student.
A. ab B. ac C. bc D. bd
4. Why does Chat GPT make mistakes
A. It likes fake information more. B. Some of its young users cannot use it correctly.
C. Its creator doesn’t know all the answers. D. It may pick up wrong information on the internet.

Traveling between Earth and space in an elevator (电梯), moving Earth away from the sun with huge engines ... If you have watched the sci-fi blockbuster (大片) The Wandering Earth II, you must have been wowed by these amazing technologies. How far are these imaginative ideas from reality Could we really achieve these things someday Let’s take a look.
● Earth engines
In the movie, the sun is becoming bigger and will “eat” Earth. People plan to build tens of thousands of engines on Earth in order to push it away from the sun. The energy will come from a nuclear fusion reaction (核聚变反应). Would this be possible
Wang Teng at the Chinese Academy of Sciences told Xinhua that in theory (理论上), nuclear fusion is powerful enough to move Earth. According to Wang, controllable nuclear fusion is one of the key problems scientists all over the world are working on. In the reaction, two atoms (原子) join into a heavier one, which creates a great amount of energy. It’s the same energy that powers the sun and other stars.
In December 2022, US scientists made a big breakthrough (突破). For the first time in history, they made a nuclear fusion reaction that produced more energy than it cost. Although the energy gain (获得) was not much – only enough for boiling about 9.5 liters of water, scientists are positive they could use this reaction to produce clean energy in the future.
● Space elevators
The space elevators in the movie look really cool. They travel fast between cables that connect Earth and the space station. According to Wang Yuanzhuo from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, this idea first came from Russian scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky in 1895 after seeing the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The basic idea for space elevators is to connect one end of the cable to Earth and the other end to a space station that flies at the same speed Earth rotates (旋转). But the challenge, as experts told Xinhua, is to find the right material for the cables. A carbon nanotube (碳纳米管) might work. A short tube of 1.6 grams can hold more than 800 tons, which is about 160 elephants. Since its discovery in 1991, scientists have been trying to create a tube that is as long as possible. But the longest tube was only about half a meter, developed by a team at Tsinghua University in 2013.
If we can bring the design into reality, space elevators can save lots of energy and money compared with rockets. It will also make our trip to space a lot easier.
1. The underlined word “wowed” can be replaced by _____.
A. scared B. impressed C. promoted D. praised
2. According to Wang Teng, _____.
A. moving Earth with engines is impossible in theory B. nuclear fusion is still uncontrollable so far
C. the number of engines needed to move Earth is unpredictable D. moving the sun and other stars is possible in theory
3. What was the big breakthrough in nuclear fusion reaction in late 2022
A. It produced more energy than it cost. B. It produced 9.5 liters of water.
C. It proved the safety of a nuclear fusion reaction. D. It produced the cleanest energy all over the world.
4. Which are necessary for building a space elevator
a. The space elevator should be made of carbon nanotube.
b. The cable that connects Earth and the space station is long enough.
c. The space station flies at the same speed Earth rotates.
d. The cable that connects Earth and the space station is strong enough.
A. abc B. abd C. acd D. bcd
5. What can we infer from the technologies in the movie
A. High technologies have dark sides as well. B. Environmental problems should be noticed.
C. Sci-fi works are not all about imagination. D. They cannot be achieved even in theory.

There was once a company in the United States that announced that it would offer a large amount of money to anyone who could find a white marigold(金盏花). Most marigolds are either golden or brown. It is very hard to find a white one.
Twenty years later, the company received a letter from an old woman. She sent 100 white marigold seeds along with the letter.
The woman was a fan of flowers. When she first heard the company's announcement 20 years ago, she got very excited. She thought she could grow her own white marigolds. But her children doubted her. She knew nothing about seed genetics(遗传学), after all. So her dream of growing white marigolds was just a dream.
Still, she worked to make it happen. She planted some common marigold seeds and took good care of them. A year later, when the marigolds bloomed, she chose one of the faintest flowers and took its seeds. She planted these seeds and waited another year for them to bloom.
Day after day, year after year, through many seasons, her life changed. Her husband died, her children moved away, and many other things happened. But her desire(愿望) to grow white marigolds remained strong in her heart. She knows success belongs to the persevering.
