Almost everyone shares the same daily routine(例行公事): beginning the day by reading the newspaper, then going off to work and then returning home tired and ready for bed. Younger people in school or college may have a different routine from adults, but their lives are pretty similar. Most people, young or old, can’t find the time or energy to relax and enjoy the day. Luckily, music is here to help us forget our worries and feel peaceful. Besides being pleasant to the ear, music can help us relax. Music is also good because it can teach us something about different languages and cultures and all around the world. Everyone likes music and every country has a history of music to be proud of. From birth to death, we have music along with us. Music, like all forms of art, is another way to add peace to our lives. Modern studies show that relaxing music can do good to our bodies in some way as hard exercise does. Pythagoras, the Greek mathematician, said that some kinds of music could change behavior patterns. Listening to the sounds of music can make us relax ourselves. Music can help people communicate and express their feelings. Every day people enjoy songs on the radio because the songs reflect(反映)their feelings inside. Lovers need love songs for each other. As much as music expresses feelings, it can also change feelings. A sad day can be made happy with the help of music. Sometimes when we feel angry we need angry music to make us feel better. Music can also help people remember something. School children are taught to sing songs about colors, animals and letters to help them memorize new words and concepts(概念). Music can change people’s lives in unimaginable ways.

Saving the Well
Once upon a time, in a vast desert, there was a small village that depended on a single well for water. The well was not only a source of life for the villagers but also for the travelers who passed through the desert.
One year, a really bad drought hit the village. The plants died, animals moved away, and the well’s water level started to drop. The villagers grew worried, knowing that they needed the well to live. Among them was a young boy named Amir. He noticed that while everyone was worried, very few were taking action to save the precious water.
Amir decided to make a difference. He started by using less water for his daily needs and collected rainwater in pots. He also suggested planting drought-resistant (抗旱) plants around the well to keep the soil wet and reduce water evaporation (蒸发). At first, only a few villagers took him seriously, but as the well’s water even got lower, more started to listen.
Amir taught the villagers how to create small basins around the plants to catch more rainwater and how to cover the ground with stones and leaves to reduce evaporation. He also organized teams to clean up around the well and dig small channels to direct any rainwater into the well.

(23-24八年级下·上海杨浦·期中)Surviving the Fire
It was a cold, dry February afternoon in 2017. I was in my house with my children. Suddenly, a fire broke out in my autistic (患自闭症的) son’s room. In a few minutes, the fire spread across the living room and then the whole house.
My children and I all escaped the fire without physical injury. However, we lost all of our possessions, except for the clothes we were wearing. We didn't even have shoes on. I watched the fire go up through the roof. We lost our home. We had nowhere to live.
Fortunately, we had insurance (保险). But until we could receive some money, we had to live with friends and family and make do with what other people gave us.
The main impact (影响) was on the children. My autistic son really had problems dealing with any changes. He couldn’t even accept the fact of having to wear a new pair of shoes. Yet we had to tell him that he would be living in a whole new house and that all of his clothes and toys were gone. My youngest daughter had asthma (哮喘). Thankfully, the headteacher of her school came and brought her the medicine she kept at school.
Thinking about what could have happened, I couldn’t help but feel frightened. I was just thankful that my kids were all alive. Everyone was so nice. Turning rubbish into new earth
My father is a quiet man. He has his thoughts, but he usually keeps them to himself. There is one thing that really gets him excited. Just say the word “rubbish” to him! Or I should say, he is keen on solving the rubbish problem!
“We have become a ‘throw-away’ society,” he says. “We buy and buy, and then we throw it away. We can’t keep doing this. Rubbish is everybody’s problem.” My father doesn’t just talk about it though. When he sees a problem, he tries to find a solution.
Last year, my father decided to do something about all the wasted food we were throwing away. One family makes nearly 500 pounds of food waste each year. We throw away the potato skins and the apple cores (核) when we finish with them. Imagine how they collect in the large area!
However, there is something that we can do to reuse rubbish. For example, if we carefully deal with food waste, it can be changed from rubbish to a rich, dark earth known as compost (肥料). This compost can be added to vegetable gardens to make the plants grow really well.
“I bought a compost bin today.” Dad said at dinner one night. “From now on, instead of throwing away all our food waste, we will put it in the compost bin. Mother Nature will slowly turn it from rubbish into earth.”

(23-24八年级下·上海浦东新·期中)A sweet art-sugar painting
In China, one can often find folk artists producing sugar paintings with liquid sugar along the streets, in the parks, and around the schools.
The artists normally sit before a wooden stand where there is a smooth rock table in the middle. On the table, there is a wooden plate with various pre-painted images such as dragons, birds, dogs and flower baskets.
Sugar painting is different from traditional painting because artists must work quickly before the hot sugar cools down. They draw the picture without stopping. To get familiar with the whole process, the painter has to do some practice of normal painting in the first place.
There are two main kinds of sugar painting: plane painting and solid painting. It is easier to do the former. When producing the later, the painter needs more knowledge and techniques of sugar painting.
According to some academic studies, sugar painting originated from the Ming Dynasty. In the Qing Dynasty, sugar painting gained more popularity. In recent years, the folk artists in Sichuan have developed this art by incorporating techniques of Chinese shadow puppet and Chinese paper cutting.

Each year several thousand people are killed on the road in Great Britain. Every year between one and two hundred thousand people are injured, or killed in road accidents.
If you are in England and if you listen to the eight o’clock news from BBC, you will often hear news of road accidents. You may hear something like this: “On last Monday evening, at about twenty minutes to ten, a cyclist was knocked down by a truck at crossing of Oak Road and High Street in Croydon. The cyclist had died from his injuries. Anyone who saw the accident please communicate with New Scotland Yard, telephone number Whitehall one, two, one, two.”
Accidents are often caused by carelessness. If everybody obeys the rules, the roads will be much safer. How can we make the road safer
In Great Britain traffic keeps on to the left. Motor-cars, trucks, buses and cyclists must all keep to the left side of the road. In most other countries traffic keeps to the right.
Before crossing the road, stop and look both ways. Look right, look left, look right again. Then, if you are sure that the road is clear, and there is nothing coming, it is safe to cross the road. If you see small children, or very old people, or blind people waiting to cross the road, it is kind to help them to cross the road in safety.
We must teach young children to cross the road safely and set them a good example so that there will be fewer and fewer accidents and our life will be safer.

With so much at stake (处于成败关头), it is easy to get stressed about your exams. However, with the right amount of hard work and focus you can pass your tests with ease!

When I was a little child, I learned many kinds of skills. I learned how to do chores around the house, some first aids and outdoor survival skills. There’s one skill that’s really useful in everyday life—basic home repair.
Being able to take care of repairs around the house is very satisfying. It might be difficult at first, but when you know more about your tools, it becomes easier.
For example, I had some problems with the shower head in my bathroom a few days ago. I didn’t call a repairman to replace it—who knows how much money the repairman would want me to pay for So I bought a new shower head and replaced it myself.
The task was so simple that it only took me several minutes. As I fixed the new shower head on, I felt a sense of achievement. Of course, there are lots of repairs that are more difficult. My brother, for example, has repaired the TV set in his house many times. With the help of online instructional videos, he has saved thousands of dollars in repairman fee over the years.
As the weeks passed, the villagers noticed a change. The water in the well didn’t go down as much, and the plants around it began to grow well. The efforts to save water paid off, and the village was able to make it through the drought.

People went out of their way to help, not just on the day the fire broke out, but also in the weeks afterwards. Their kindness is the thing that has really stuck in my mind.

2.The author’s children were badly hurt in the fire, weren’t they

It took a while to get used to it, but soon, we were taking our food waste to the compost bin. In three months, we found it full of rich compost material!

When I was six years old, Grandpa sent me into the woods to gather pecans (美洲山核桃). Pecan picking was really hard work and my little basket was only half full. Just then, something caught my eyes. A large brown squirrel (松鼠) was a few feet away. I watched as he picked up a pecan, hurried to a tree and disappeared in a large hole in the trunk. A moment later, the squirrel jumped out and climbed down to the ground to pick up another nut. Once again, he took the pecan back to his hiding place.
I dashed over to the tree and looked into the hole. It was filled with pecans! Golden pecans were right there for taking. This was my chance. I scooped (挖) all of those pecans into my basket. Now it was full! I was so proud of myself. I couldn’t wait to show Grandpa all the pecans. Therefore, I ran back and shouted, “Look at all the pecans!” He looked into the basket and said, “Well, well, how did you find so many ” I told him how I’d followed the squirrel and taken the pecans from his hiding place.
Grandpa congratulated me on how smart I’d been in observing the squirrel and his habits. Then he did something that surprised me. He handed the basket back to me and put his arm gently around my shoulders.
“That squirrel worked very hard to gather his winter supply of food,” he said, “Now that all of his pecans are gone, don’t you think that little squirrel will manage to live through the cold winter ”
“I didn’t think about that.” I said.
“I know,” Grandpa said, “But a good person should never take advantage of (利用) someone else’s hard work.”
I understood. After supper, I did the right thing.

Nowadays, the number of sugar painters has decreased. A certain number of artists are making efforts to preserve it by ________ and applying for the National Non-material Cultural Heritage.

1.If you listen to eight o’clock news from BBC, what will you hear
2.Accidents aren’t often caused by carelessness, are they
3.Does the traffic in Great Britain keep on to the left or to the right
4.What should you do if you see blind people waiting to cross the road
5.Why must we teach children to cross the road safely and set them a good example

Once upon a time there lived a farmer. He earned money by selling the products from his farm. He gave all his money to the poor people. So, the whole village respected him. But he had a big problem in his farm. Whenever he spread seeds (种子) in his farm, the crows (乌鸦) would come and eat them up. He was worried about this trouble as he got less money from his farm.
“I must do something about these crows. I will be in deep trouble if I do not stop these crows,” he thought. He complained about this problem to his friends. They gave him an idea to get rid of the crows. “Go to the town and buy a large net. Trap (设陷捕获) the crows in the net with some grains (谷粒).”
So the next day, the farmer bought a net and some grains. He placed the net on the farm and spread the grain over it. Then he went away and hid himself.

Suddenly the farmer heard a weak voice among the noises of the crows. There was a pigeon (鸽子) among the crows. Both the pigeon and the bad crows were in the net. The pigeon said, “Mr. Farmer, please let me go. You are angry with the crows, not with me.”
The farmer said, “But you too have been caught stealing from my farm. I will not let you go,” said the farmer. The pigeon had to pay a heavy price for being in the wrong group. Exam time is the most stressful (压力重的) period of the year. You have worked all school term on your classes and now it’s the time to prove what you have learned. With so much at stake (处于成败关头), it is easy to get stressed about your exams. However, with the right amount of hard work and focus you can pass your tests with ease!
When I was in school, I used to get very stressed over my exams. So did my friends. Some people stopped eating and others ate too much! Some gave up and others burned themselves out! The most important thing to remember when studying is not to feel frightened! Take the middle path—stay calm, eat healthy and get a rest. Pushing yourself too hard is just as dangerous as not studying enough. A tired, overworked brain is just as useless as a lazy, empty one!
So, what should you do Arrange a time each day for study and a time for relaxation. You may have less time to relax than usual, but you still need to let your brain rest for a few moments. Get plenty of sleep. If you are tired, information will not stick in your memory. Finally eat healthy foods that fuel your body and mind.
It does no good to think too much about your exams. Some students may think that the rest of their life depends on them. That’s not true. Instead, just view the exams as another difficulty you will overcome. You have overcome all kinds of difficulties in your life so far. With the right amount of work and focus, you will pass your exams with flying colours! High school is right around the corner!

Skills like these not only save us money, but more importantly, make us more independent and confident. Doing chores around your house is easier than you think.
1.Which is the writer’s useful skill in everyday life
