pick up (=pick up the phone) 接电话 = answer the phone
pick up 还有以下含义：
1) 拾起；抱起
e.g. 孩子们在海边捡到许多贝壳。

2) (开车)接人；搭载
e.g. 明天我会开车到你家接你。
I'll pick you up at your home tomorrow.

区分 when 与while
(1) “当…的时候”，如后面连接的动词为进行时态,则多用while。而when通常与瞬间性动词连用。
(2) 若while前后的动词都是进行时态,while可译为“与此同时”
e.g. 我在看书，与此同时我的哥哥在画画。
I was reading while my brother was drawing.
(3) 当while前后的句子描述的情况相对或相反,while可译为“而”,while更强调并列的对比而非转折。
e.g. 我很外向，而我的姐姐很文静。
I am outgoing while my sister is quiet and shy.
