5 books I loved in 2018
By Bill Gates
A great read is the perfect gift and I think everyone could use a few more books in their lives. My book list
covers various topics, including an autobiography on learning throughout a life, a deep search on autonomous
weapons (武器), a thriller about the fall of a once-promising company and a guide about meditation (冥想)—there’
s something for everyone.
The Headspace Guide to Meditation and Mindfulness, by Andy Puddicombe. The book starts with
Puddicombe’s personal journey from a university student to a Buddhist monk and then becomes an entertaining
explainer on how to meditate. If you’re thinking about trying mindfulness, this is the perfect introduction.
Army of None, by Paul Scharre. It’s an extremely complicated topic, but Scharre offers clear explanations and
presents both the advantages and disadvantages of machine-driven warfare. His fluency with the subject should
come as no surprise: he’s an ex-soldier who helped draw up the U.S. government’s policy on autonomous weapons.
Bad Blood, by John Carreyrou.Carreyrou gives you the definitive insider’s look at the rise and fall of a
第 3页/共 16页
company. I found myself unable to put it down once I started. This book has everything: magazine cover stories,
ruined family relationships, and the failure of a company once valued at nearly $10 billion.
21 Lessons for the 21st Century, by Yuval Noah Harari. I’m a big fan of everything Harari has written, and his
latest is no exception. If 2018 has left you stressed out by the state of the world, 21 Lessons offers a helpful
framework for processing the news and thinking about the challenges we face.
Educated, by Tara Westover. Tara never went to school or visited a doctor until she left home at 17. I loved
this life story of a young woman whose thirst for learning was so strong that she ended up getting a Ph.D. from
Cambridge University.
21. According to Bill Gates, the book list is _____.
A. time-consuming B. life-changing
C. wide-ranging D. easy-reading
22. Paul Scharre is able to clearly explain machine-driven warfare issues because _____.
A. he used to serve in the army
B. he has outstanding writing skills
C. he is good at making autonomous weapons
D. he was a policy-maker in the U.S. government
23. Which book would most interest home-schooled children
A. Educated
B. Bad Blood
C. 21 Lessons for the 21st Century
D. The Headspace Guide to Meditation and Mindfulness
B
Over the past two years, Liu Yijing, a storm chaser from Nanchang, has traveled nearly 27,000 kilometers to
record storms in 11 provinces. When he was a kid, Liu liked to read popular science picture books and watch the
weather forecast, becoming excited whenever he saw storms and other weather. In 2018, when playing with an old
camera at home, Liu accidentally took dozens of pictures of lightning. He posted them online and received many
likes, arousing his great interest in shooting storms.
But it’s never easy to shoot amazing pictures about ever-changing storms. Every time, Liu needs to find an
area where storms could appear and then mark the best shooting positions, which often cover dozens of kilometers.
Then, he’ll find a reliable driver and carry his photographic equipment and food to wait for the storm. For shooting
high-quality storms, he always sticks with it to the end and often lands himself in danger of being attacked by hails
(冰雹) and pouring rains.
However, one thing changed his mind. One day in August 2020, Liu was shooting a pink-purple thunderstorm
when a farmer came over and cried, “You, as a photographer, should care about our crops, not the damaging
storms.” The farmer’s words hit him as hard as any thunderstorm. “I just wanted to shoot the storm, but I never
thought that what I like is a disaster for others,” Liu said. “I felt guilty and decided to do something to help more
people learn about meteorology (气象学).”
Now Liu makes and posts short videos with explanations about the phenomena and the possible dangers of
storms. For example, to warn people of the danger of possible hails, he marked hail cores, which often show
noticeable blue colors due to large amounts of thick raindrops in the cloud, because water molecules absorb red
light and scatter (散射) blue light. “Putting knowledge into shocking and lively pictures and videos is a better way
to pass the knowledge to more people,” said Liu. “That’s the significance and value of what I’m doing now.”
24. What caused Liu to shoot storms
A. Popular science picture books. B. His interest in taking photos.
C. His love for weather report. D. The popularity of his pictures.
25. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. Possible dangers of shooting storms.
B. Liu’s efforts in shooting high-quality storms.
C. Requirements for being a storm chaser.
D. Liu’s special skills for shooting amazing pictures.
26. How did the farmer’s words change Liu
A. He chose to spread knowledge. B. He started to care about crops.
C. He changed his way of shooting. D. He shoots storms with guilty.
27. Why does the author mention hail cores in the last paragraph
A. To explain how dangerous hails are.
B. To give an example of a sign of a hailstorm.
C. To illustrate how Liu helps people understand storms.
D. To prove Liu has a profound knowledge of meteorology.
C
Speed reading has its benefits—it saves time where there is a lack of available hours or days, and the volume
of pages is shocking. The problem generated by speed reading, though, can be summarized with the following
quote from the witty (诙谐的) director Woody Allen: “This is how I read War and Peace. It was about Russia.” A
remarkable summary for a 1200-page book.
I prefer discussing the “way of reading” and not only the speed. Does a slow pace guarantee quality of reading
You can do a very short exercise—which books have you read, let’s say, two years ago What were they about
Can you recall five ideas from each of them In most cases, the answer is “No”. So, what difference does it make if
we read fast or slow
In today’s busy times, I suggest “Mindful Reading”, which includes two simple principles. The first is, of
course, being mindful. The speed of reading is precisely matched to the speed of awareness. I read to realise. I
realise to comprehend. I comprehend to make use of. It obliges (迫使) me to slow down when I don’t grasp the idea
behind the words and to go back over and over to one and the same sentence. And thus, poetry requires a slow pace,
time for an internal “echo” of rhyme in the soul for appreciating the beauty of the words while the novel allows for
a higher speed in order for us to enjoy the plot. But all types of speed have one thing in common: mindfulness.
And the other principle: Post Lectio—Ratiocination. If we read for 60 minutes, and after closing the book,
immediately go and do something else, we are missing a key element—thinking over the content while we still
remember it, something like a mental digestion. Whoever is not used to this can try at least59/1 compared to 60/0:
one minute to think and assimilate. Better, try five, or even better, ten minutes, or why not 30/30 minutes With this
mental exercise, we will not only remember ideas from books read, but we will gain a much bigger benefit from
their content.
I hope you did not read this article too fast.
28. Why is Woody Allen quoted in paragraph 1
A. To show the efficiency of reading fast.
B To illustrate the problem of speed reading.
C. To prove the director’s ability to summarize.
D. To stress the importance of reading classics.
29. What may the writer agree with about the speed of reading
A. Fast reading ensures reading quality.
B. Fast reading is superior to slow reading.
C. Slow reading is no guarantee of reading quality.
D. Slow reading prevents us remembering the content.
30. What does the first principle of “Mindful Reading” involve
A. Deep engagement. B. Quick comprehension.
C. Excellent memory. D. Wild imagination.
31. What does the author suggest readers do according to paragraph 4
A. Take breaks to refresh their mind. B. Read mindfully without interruptions.
C. Devote time to reflecting after reading. D. Digest information while reading.
D
Each of us individually is the accumulated (积累) product of thousands of generations that have come before
us in an unbroken line. Our culture and technology today are also the result of thousands of years of accumulated
and remixed cultural knowledge. Cumulative culture allowed humans to adapt to a diversity of environments and
challenges. But, it is unclear when cumulative culture first developed during ancient human evolution.
“Our earliest ancestors have been successful at adapting to ecological conditions that require different kinds of
problems to be solved,” said Perreault, an associate professor with the School of Human Evolution and Social
Change. “Cumulative culture is key because it allows human populations to build on and recombine the solutions
of prior generations and to develop new complex solutions to problems very quickly.”
As a baseline for the complexity of stone tool technologies achievable without cumulative culture, Perreault
analyzed technologies used by chimpanzees (黑 猩 猩 ). He then analyzed changes in the complexity of stone
tool-making techniques across the past 3.3 million years of the archaeological record to explore the origin of
cumulative culture. He broke down the complexity of the stone tool technologies by the number of steps that each
tool-making sequence (序列) involved.
The results suggested that from around 3.3 to 1.8 million years ago, stone tool-making sequences remained
within the range of the baselines. From around 1.8 million to 600,000 years ago, making sequences began to
slightly top the complexity baseline. But, after around 600,000 years ago, the complexity of making sequences
rapidly increased. “By 600,000 years ago or so, ancient human populations started relying on unusually complex
technologies, and we only see rapid increases in complexity after that time as well,” said Perreault.
Tool-assisted food-hunting may have been the motive for the earliest beginning of the evolution of cumulative
culture. Early ancient humans, 3.4 to 2 million years ago, likely relied on strategies that require tools - like
accessing meat and organs - leading to changes in brain size, lifetime and biology that set the stage for cumulative
culture.
32. What does cumulative culture refer to according to the text
A. Emphasizing individual development.
B. Paying attention to reforming social structure.
C. Adapting to a changing living condition step by step.
D. Building up technological improvements over generations.
33. What’s Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. How Perreault conducted the research. B. How important stone tool technologies were.
C. What the baseline of cumulative culture was. D. Why Perreault chose chimpanzees for the study.
34. What happened by 600,000 years ago
A. Tool-making sequences remained unchanged.
B. The population of the earth increased sharply.
C. The ancestors began to make stone tools.
D. The technology reached a turning point.
35. Why are strategies that require tools mentioned in the last paragraph
A. To show the result of human brains’ changes.
B. To illustrate the motive of cumulative culture.
C. To indicate the significance of common culture.
D. To stress the eating habits of human ancestors.

Once upon a time, there lived a young boy named Jack who harbored a deep passion for playing the piano, a
passion that lit his soul and filled his days with melodies. His dream was to become a famous pianist, hoping to
charm audiences with his enchanting tunes. Every night, as he lay in bed, he imagined himself standing on grand
stages. receiving thunderous applause and the admiration of countless music lovers.
However, life had other plans for him. When Jack was interviewed for a well-known music school, his heart
sank as he received a rejection letter, stating that his skills were not up to the school’s high standards, a cruel blow
that left him feeling uncertain about his future.
Disappointed but not discouraged, Jack decided to turn his setback into a stepping stone. Every day after
school, he would rush to a small, dimly lit room in his basement, where an old piano stood as a silent witness to his
unwavering determination. The room was humble, with barely enough space for him and the piano, but it was there
that he poured his heart and soul into his craft. Hours turned into days, and days into months, with Jack’s fingers
bleeding from the constant practice. Despite the pain and exhaustion, he continued to press on, driven by his dream
and the belief that one day he would prove them all wrong.
Seeking guidance, Jack turned to a retired pianist in the neighborhood who had once been a renowned
performer. The retired pianist, impressed by Jack’s dedication and passion, took him under his wing and provided
him with invaluable insights and comments. He taught Jack to refine his skills and technique, helping him to
