Susan B. Anthony was called terrible names, had things thrown at her, and even had her picture dragged through the streets. But still she didn’t back down. She thought fighting for women’s rights — and the rights of everyone — was too important.
Anthony was born in Massachusetts in 1820. From an early age, she was taught that everyone should be equal. She knew it wasn’t fair that she didn’t have a say in electing (选择) political leaders just because she was a woman. She also thought that it wasn’t right that male teachers made more money than she did. In the 1850s, she started voicing her opinion publicly, stopping people on the streets or giving speeches around the country.
In 1856 Anthony joined the anti-slavery (反对奴隶) movement. She gave speeches, organized meetings, put up posters, and handed out leaflets, even though she faced angry crowds of people who disagreed with her. She met Elizabeth Cady Stanton in 1851, and together they co-founded the National Woman Suffrage Association in 1869 to push for women’s voting (投票) rights. They also launched a newspaper, The Revolution, to spread their message.
African-Americans were recognized as U. S. citizens in 1870, and black men were later given the right to vote. But African-American women, like all women, still did not have the right to vote. This made Anthony so angry that she cast a vote in the 1872 presidential election, an act for which she was arrested (逮捕) and fined $100 — though she never paid the fine.
Anthony worked for more than 50 years for women’s rights, but she never got to legally vote. She died on March 13,1906,14 years before the 19th Amendment (修正案) gave all women the right to vote. Despite this, her efforts were recognized, and the amendment was even referred to as the “Anthony Amendment” in her honor. And in 1979, Anthony became the first woman to be on a U. S. coin, the silver dollar.
4. What was Anthony’s main goal
A. Ending slavery.
B. Getting paid as much as a man.
C. Gaining voting rights for women.
D. Becoming the first woman to be on a U. S. coin.
5. What happened to Anthony at the age of 49
A. She launched a newspaper.
B. She was recognized as a U. S. citizen.
C. She started voicing her opinion publicly.
D. She set up the National Woman Suffrage Association.
6. Why was Anthony arrested
A. For voting in an election. B. For refusing to pay the fine.
C. For stopping people on the streets. D. For joining the anti-slavery movement.
7. Why was the 19th Amendment called the “Anthony Amendment”
A. Because Anthony voted for it.
B. Because Anthony set it up.
C. Because of Anthony’s great contributions.
D. Because Anthony was an important political leader.

Officials in South Carolina have recaptured (重新捕获) the last of 43 monkeys that escaped from a farm that raises monkeys in early November.
Head of Alpha Genesis research center, Greg Westergaard, said the final four recaptured monkeys appeared to be in good health. The remaining monkeys had spent weeks living in the woods and even experienced a rare snowstorm.
Alpha Genesis is a company that offers services to biomedical researchers. Some locals call it “the monkey farm.” The animals — all female rhesus macaque monkeys — escaped from the grounds of the company on November 6.
Police who investigated (调查) the incident said the monkeys escaped when an employee failed to properly lock their enclosure (围栏). Westergaard explained in November that workers were supposed to lock one gate before opening another, but all three gates were left unlocked.
Employees at Alpha Genesis tried to persuade the monkeys to return with offers of special foods, including peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and “monkey biscuits” — a high-protein food made specially for rhesus macaques. Alpha Genesis employees kept an eye on the monkeys and set out kind traps. Most of the animals came back to eat the food.
Most of the monkeys did not go far. The animals are about the size of a cat, weighing around 3 kilograms. The monkeys never represented a risk to public health, police and health officials said. During the time they were free, the area received its first snow in seven years, measuring up to 8 centimeters.
The Alpha Genesis company raises the monkeys to sell to medical labs and other researchers. Humans have been using the monkeys for scientific research since the late 1800s. Scientists believe rhesus macaques and humans split from a common ancestor about 25 million years ago and share about 93 percent of the same DNA.
8. What caused the monkeys to escape from Alpha Genesis
A The gates were left unlocked.
B. The employee forgot to feed them.
C. The monkeys broke free on their own.
D. The enclosure was damaged by a rare snowstorm.
9. What is the main purpose of Alpha Genesis company
A. To provide pets for locals.
B. To sell the monkeys for scientific research.
C. To study rhesus macaque monkeys’ behavior.
D. To train the monkeys for human entertainment.
10. What can we know about rhesus macaque monkeys from the text
A. They are from South Carolina. B. They are about the weight of a cat.
C. They can hardly survive in the wild. D. They are genetically close to humans.
11. Which of the following serves as the best title
A. Escaped Monkeys Recaptured
B. Snowstorm Affects Escaped Monkeys
C. South Carolina Monkey Farm Incident
D. Biomedical Research and Rhesus Macaque Monkeys

When you think of diversity (多样性), what do you think of To some it means a place where all are included, a place where you can be who you are without worry. But what does it mean in schools We took a closer look.
When we asked students at our school about diversity, the responses were extremely positive. Younger students, while often unsure of the exact definition, confidently described our school as inclusive (包容的). A Year 2 student explained diversity as “everyone treating each other as equals.” Most students expressed how diversity makes them feel happy, proud of who they are, and comfortable being themselves. To us, diversity means feeling comfortable, being who you are in a space that makes you feel good about your unique self.
It is no secret that diversity has changed a lot in the last five years, but we wanted to know exactly how much it has evolved (进化). We asked Year 5 and 6 students their opinion on the topic and we received very varied responses. Some said it hasn’t changed that much, and we have always been a truly diverse school, but others responded saying that in the last few years, they have noticed an increase in people feeling more comfortable being themselves.
We also touched base with some of the teachers, who were able to give us more information on the topic. They agreed that events like Harmony Day and Diversity Day have created opportunities for teachers and students to discuss and celebrate the differences that make the school unique. One teacher said diversity has grown over time and continues to play an important role in making our school as welcoming and inclusive as it is. Another added: “Diversity is all around us and it is great to see students being themselves. After all, diversity is for everyone.”
12. What did a Year 2 student say about diversity
A It means being happy. B. It means being proud.
C. It means self-acceptance. D. It means equal treatment.
13. What does the underlined phrase “touched base with” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Talked to. B. Agreed with. C. Came across. D. Responded to.
14. Why do teachers think Harmony Day is important
A. It makes students happy. B. It helps build self-confidence.
C. It promotes diversity discussion. D. It strengthens teacher-student relationship.
15. What can we infer about the school’s atmosphere about diversity
A. Diversity is only celebrated during special events.
B. The school is actively working to include everyone.
C. Students are encouraged to hide their differences.
D. The school focuses on students’ grades.

Two experienced hikers, Kathryn McKee, 51, and Beata LeLacheur, 54, from Massachusetts, were rescued from Mount Washington after a terrible snowstorm trapped them at about 5,000 feet on Sunday. Mount Washington is the tallest peak in the Northeast at 6,288 feet, and is known for its extreme weather conditions.
The storm struck while the pair was hiking a difficult trail. Temperatures dropped and winds kicked up, blowing snow so that the trail the friends were following was completely wiped out. The pair pushed through chest-deep snow, lost on the mountain. “Both of us had received training on hikes and had winter hiking experience. So we didn’t expect we would get lost,” said McKee.
One of McKee’s snowshoes got stuck in a “spruce trap,” a hole in the snow under trees. “It took like 20 minutes to get out of that,” she recalled in an interview. “But that kept happening. We had to crawl to try to get to the next point, but our struggling wasn’t working.”
After about an hour of struggling the hikers called 911 shortly after 6 p. m. and reached conservation officers, who directed them toward the trail — just 34 feet away. “They ended up on the trail several times but could not follow it because of the wind and blowing snow,” Officer Matthew Holmes said. The officers advised them to crowd together to stay warm and wait for rescue as temperatures dropped to -2°F with winds blowing at up to 60 mph.
McKee said that despite wearing gloves, her “hands were frozen.” The pair used a bag to protect themselves from the wind. They sat crowded together in the snow for six hours, unable to move as the wind buried them under the chest-deep snow. “I was terrified that my friend or I might pass away,” McKee said. “But we just kept focusing on survival, refusing to give in to panic.”

【答案】 The rescuers began their operation at 8:30 p. m. Facing the fierce wind and snow, they advanced slowly but steadily. Using special equipment, they managed to locate the trapped hikers. After hours of great efforts, they finally found McKee and LeLacheur buried in the snow. The rescuers quickly dug them out and provided immediate medical aid. Thanks to the timely rescue, the two hikers were in stable condition. “We feel really awful about having to make that 911 call, but it did save our lives, and we’re indeed grateful,” said McKee.
Looking ahead, McKee and LeLacheur plan to return to the White Mountains. They say this experience has only strengthened their love for nature and hiking. They want to try again, better prepared this time. “This experience has taught us valuable lessons about preparation and respect for nature,” McKee said. “We’ll be more cautious and better equipped next time.” LeLacheur added, “The mountains are unpredictable, but they’re also incredibly beautiful. We’re not going to let this stop us from exploring.”
