The last time I happened to find myself in Los Angeles, I did what every first-time visitor must do: I went to the world’s most fashionable grocery store only to stare at it in wonder. Those of you familiar with Erewhon will already know exactly what I’m talking about. For those who don’t: Erewhon is a high-end celebrity-beloved supermarket that sells such things as $19 smoothies (奶昔). Tik Tokers routinely flood into the store to spend small fortunes on fancy snacks and film themselves unpacking their “hauls (战利品)”.
Erewhon is also, you might have noticed, a literary reference. The brand is named after a 19th-century satirical (讽刺的) ) novel by Samuel Butler about a society full of beautiful people, where crime is treated tolerantly and considered a “sickness”, but poverty and illness are criminalised. In Erewhon, people go to great lengths to appear healthy.
What would Butler have made of an over-fancy supermarket, filled with influencers desperate to see and be seen, being named after his book I couldn’t tell you: I wandered the corridors of Erewhon looking for something fascinating but only came out with a small piece of bread.
I can tell you this, though: Americans, particularly Gen Z, seem to have an unfillable appetite for treating themselves to upmarket snacks. “TikTok creators have brought Little Treat Culture into fashion, and we’re on board,” Whole Foods writes in its roundup of 2024 food trends. Little Treat Culture is exactly what it sounds like: rewarding yourself with lovely little things, such as an extremely Instagrammable $19 smoothie, just for existing in these difficult times.
While these little luxuries aren’t always food-related, groceries have a common category for a relatively affordable luxury. And not just in the US: recent research shows that consumers are a lot more likely to say their “recent splurge (挥霍) purchase” was food or drink rather than personal care. A survey similarly found groceries to be the “new biggest splurge category”. Snack-makers are paying close attention and cashing in by designing more upmarket, individually packaged luxuries.
4. What do we know about Erewhon
A. Its main consumers are newcomers. B. It gives special rights to Tik Tokers.
C. Its pricing for goods is relatively high. D. It secures promotions from celebrities.
5. How did the author feel after shopping in Erewhon
A. He was quite confused. B. He was somewhat shocked.
C. He was a bit disappointed. D. He was extremely worn out.
6. What trend does Little Treat Culture represent
A. A sign of TikTok boom. B. A focus on healthy food.
C. A desire for expensive meals. D. A method of rewarding oneself.
7. What does the last paragraph suggest
A. People are spending less on affordable luxury goods.
B. Consumers prefer personal care items to food in life.
C. Luxury brands are planning to conduct a similar survey.
D. More well-packaged luxurious snacks will enter the market.
C
Hearing live music may be more stirring than listening to a recording of the same tune because it causes greater activity in the part of the brain linked to processing emotions.
Sascha Fruhholz at the University of Zurich in Switzerland and his colleagues composed 12 pieces of music, each lasting 30 seconds. Half were written with the aim of conveying negative emotions, such sadness and anger. These were slower and less harmonious than the remaining songs, written to express positive emotions.
They then recruited (招募) 27 people, who weren’t musically trained, to listen to these 12 pieces twice — once performed by a live pianist, which the participants heard through a speaker, and once as a recording. The order they heard them was randomly assigned, with 30 seconds of silence in between. The participants had little idea when they were hearing a recording or live music. While listening to the music, they lay in an MRI (核磁共振成像) scanner so the team could monitor their brain activity. The pianist adapted the volume and speed of the live piece according to their activity. But the recorded music was not adjusted.
The researchers found that live performances of both the negative and positive pieces consistently led to increased brain activity in the left amygdala (杏仁体) — the region of the brain that is strongly linked to assigning sensory stimuli, such as sounds, to certain emotions. Meanwhile, the recorded tunes sparked much less activity in the left amygdala. This matched up with how emotive the participants rated each piece of music after the experiment. The findings show that live music intensifies our emotional response, probably due to its free-flowing, dynamic nature, says Fruhholz.
The researchers hope to repeat the experiment with a larger audience in a concert setting. “If you go to a live concert, you’re not alone,” says Fruhholz. “This intensified emotional experience is also a social experience.”
8. What does the underlined word “stirring” mean in paragraph 1
A. Proper. B. Special. C. Calm. D. Exciting.
9. What do we know about 12 pieces of music
A. They lasted half a minute in total. B. Fruhholz recorded them in his own right.
C. Not all of them conveyed positive emotions. D. Those conveying sad emotions were faster.
10. What can be inferred from the experiment
A. The participants heard the 12 pieces non-stop. B. The recruited people were divided into 2 groups.
C. The team accordingly adjusted the music pieces. D. The subjects’ brain activities in it were observed.
11. What is the main idea of the last but one paragraph
A. The importance of the left amygdala. B. The final findings of the research.
C. The following research directions. D. The underlying logic of the brain
D
China says its maglev hyperloop train (磁悬浮超级高铁列车) has broken the world speed record in a test run, reaching a surprising 623 km/h. Eventually, its makers want to build a train more than three times as fast as one that will break the sound barrier and run faster than airplanes.
The maglev train, named the T-Flight, was built by the state-owned China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC), New Atlas reported. Hyperloop trains work by pushing MLP (磁悬浮吊舱) through tunnels with very little air resistance. The previous record holder for the fastest maglev train is the L0 Series SCMaglev in Japan, according to JRPass, which can hit a top speed of 603 km/h.
To test the new train, CASIC built a track roughly 2 kilometers long in a low-pressure vacuum (真空) tube. To reach such high speeds, the trains must encounter almost no friction (摩擦). So CASIC smoothed the test track to a flatness with a 0.3 millimeters tolerance, meaning there is a 0.01-inch difference between the lowest and highest point of the flat surface. The 20-foot-wide tunnel also has a geometric size error of less than 2 mm, meaning the margin of error (误差幅度) against a perfect shape. The entire pipeline can return to normal pressure in five minutes, which shows its surprisingly-restored ability.
In the T-Flight’s second phase of testing, CASIC aims to extend the track to 60 km and allow the train to reach 1,000 km/h.
At this theoretical top speed, the maglev train would be even faster than a passenger jet, which travels at an average range between 925 km/h and 966 km/h, according to Simple Flying. The company’s ambitions don’t stop there, however, with plans for a connection between Wuhan and Beijing that can reach up to 2,000 km/h, according to a video from 2018.
Hyperloop systems can move vehicles at speeds much faster than conventional trains — most of which are restricted to 95 km/h in the U. S. Elon Musk first proposed a hyperloop system for the U. S. in 2013 but more than a decade later, Musk’s vision has yet to see the light of day. As one of the biggest companies in the industry, Virgin shut down its own hyperloop company, which most recently went by the name Virgin Hyperloop in 2023.
12. What do we know about hyperloop trains from the first two paragraphs
A. China’s T-Flight outpaces airplanes. B. T-Flight outspeeds SCMaglev by 20 km/h.
C. The first hyperloop train is made in Japan. D. They can merely travel without air friction.
13. What is prepared for testing the T-Flight
A. A free-pressure tube. B. An absolute flat track.
C. A perfectly-shaped tunnel. D. A quickly-recovered pipeline.
14. Which can be used to describe China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation
A. Ambitious and reliable. B. Conventional and practical.
C. State-owned and conservative. D. Advanced and international.
15. What is the best title of the passage
A. CASIC: A Promising Company B. China: A Country Leading the Trend
C. T-Flight: A Potential Record-Breaker D. Hyperloop: A Globally Common Topic

The digital world was his playground, a place where he could escape into adventures and challenges that kept him entertained for hours on end.
His parents were tired of always trying to stop him, constantly telling him that spending so much time online and on social media wasn’t good for his physical health. They worried about his eyesight and the lack of physical activity. But Bilal never listened. He was very addicted to the e-world. The appeal of virtual achievements and social interactions was too strong for him to resist.
One day, after getting fed up, his mother discussed Bilal with his grandparents. “Is there any way we can get him away from this internet world ” she asked, her voice filled with desperation.
His grandfather replied, “Yes, there is a way. I am planning to visit our village for a week. I am thinking of taking Bilal along. It will be a new experience for him to see a simple lifestyle. Besides, the internet signals are very bad there, so he won’t be able to stay online very often.”
His mother was happy to hear this. “That’s a very good idea,” she replied, hopeful that this could be the turning point for Bilal.
She excitedly went and shared it with Bilal, hoping he would be happy about going with his grandparents, but he refused, saying the trip would be boring without the internet. “How would I spend my days ” he complained.
Just then his grandmother entered the room and explained calmly to him that it would be an exciting trip. 【答案】Dear Daniel,
I’m sorry to hear about your muscle injury. Acupuncture can be helpful for muscle pain, but I suggest you consult a doctor first to ensure it’s suitable for your condition. Traditional Chinese medicine believes acupuncture promotes blood circulation and relieves pain. However, since you’re experiencing severe pain, professional medical advice is essential. You might also try ice packs for immediate relief.
Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
【52题答案】
【答案】 Two days later, Bilal’s grandparents started their journey. Bilal went along with them. After arriving at their old house, which was large and open, they had dinner with their relatives. The next morning. Bilal went to the fields, where the farmers greeted him warmly. Bilal wandered around the fields full of beautiful flowers and fruit trees. He explored the cotton fields, learning how farmers harvest the crops. He also participated in the work. Additionally, Bilal made friends with the village children and played outdoor games. He felt so interested in the new experience that he didn’t even miss playing video games.
A week passed quickly and it was time for Bilal to return. He didn’t want to leave because he had started enjoying the simple village life that brought him many new enriching experiences. His grandparents promised him that they would return to the place annually or during his extended school breaks. On the journey back, Bilal thought that coming to the village was the best thing that had happened to him. He had experienced a new lifestyle, enjoyed quality time, and made wonderful memories — all without the internet!
