I had a great time with the film Turning Red, which follows Meilin, a thirteen-year-old girl who
suddenly begins turning into a giant red panda.
The film was set in 2002 when I would’ve been around Meilin’s age. It was a joy for me to watch a
film that I could relate to. The film illustrates the push-pull that many immigrant families face: how much
of their culture to keep and how much to assimilate (融入). There are beautiful traces of Chinese culture
throughout this film, including gorgeous food, time around the table, relationships with extended family,
and more.
In the film, women in Meilin’s family suffer a curse (诅咒). As soon as they begin to blossom into
womanhood, they transform into a giant red panda whenever they express any strong emotion. Thus, they
have learned that emotional repression is the way to go. It was beautiful to watch this young girl choose
the different path of emotional wellness instead of holding back her feelings.
It’s not a surprise that the director Domee Shi, who is around my age, chose this plotline. Many
people my age are on that similar path Meilin finds herself on. We honor our parents and what they have
done for us, but we’re also choosing to be more emotionally healthy and trying to live differently than we
were taught.
The part of Turning Red I particularly loved is the ending. Though Meilin’s mom, grandma, and
aunts see that it’s possible to integrate their red pandas into their lives, they don’t choose that path. Instead,
they choose to bottle their pandas up once again. However, they do get a new perspective on this young,
groundbreaking girl. It’s such a sweet reminder that not everyone can go on the same journey toward
emotional health, and that’s okay.
If all of them had embraced their pandas, I think the ending would’ve felt incredibly cheese and
taken away some of the power of the story. So we get a conclusion that is satisfying and heart-warming
without being too much of a fairy tale.
24. Why did the author enjoy watching Turning Red
A. She found a connection with the story.
B. She followed a life path similar to its director.
C. She adored the appealing design of the red panda.
D. She valued its emphasis on the beautiful Chinese culture.
25. What does the underlined word “repression” in the third paragraph mean
A. Disturbance. B. Control. C. Wellness. D. Expression.
26. What does the author think of the ending of the film
A. Bittersweet. B. Idealized. C. Realistic. D. Cheesy.
27. What is the central dilemma faced by Meilin in Turning Red
A. “Can I embrace my true self ” B. “Should I prioritize my family ”
C. “Can I uncover the curse’s secret ”
D. “Should I explore diverse cultures ”

Wanting to squeeze or bite an animal’s ears or feet is called cute aggression, and scientists are trying
to understand why we do it.
Cute aggression is a type of dimorphous expression(双模表达), an emotional response in which a
person experiences more than one emotion at the same time. It begins with a stimulus, saying your dog
sitting with their paws crossed. This prompts positive feeling overwhelmed by cuteness, and then an
expressive behavior. With dimorphous expressions, the person experiences more than one expressive
behavior. They may show delight at their dog’s cuteness, but also announce that their paws are so cute
that they want to eat them. It makes sense that adorable puppy paws can create delight. But having an
urge to bite them doesn’t seem to belong in the moment.
In recent years, scientists have been able to use technology to determine the neural mechanisms that
occur during cute aggression. In a study in Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, Meltzofg, an associate
professor at the University of California, and her co-author sought to understand the neural mechanisms
associated with cute aggression.
The team recruited 54 volunteers aged between 18 and 40, and connected them to an
electroencephalogram (EEG). The participants then looked at four sets of images. Two sets featured cute
babies and baby animals, while two sets displayed “less cute” babies and adult animals. With the EEG,
the researchers could measure electrical activity within milliseconds of its occurrence. They found greater
activity after images of cute animals were displayed.
In general, people who had greater neural activity after seeing cute kitties were more likely to report
having a dimorphous reaction. Neurologically, Meltzofg says, the findings suggest that cute aggression
involves both the emotion and reward systems. The study also found that people who are more likely to
become overwhelmed with emotions are more likely to experience cute aggression. The current theory
with dimorphous emotions is that the second emotion helps to manage the overwhelming feelings and
even calms the person down.
28. Which behavior is an example of dimorphous expression
A. Enjoying a tragic movie and crying out. B. Laughing at a joke and feeling delighted.
C. Encountering an accident in a bad mood. D. Appreciating flowers and wanting to pick them.
29. What do recent studies focus on
A. Repeated occurrence of cute expressions.
B. The impact of technology on human emotions.
C. Different reactions of age groups to cute images.
D. The neural mechanism related to dimorphous expression.
30. How is the study carried out in paragraph 4
A. By reviewing previous studies. B. By analyzing some data.
C. By observing subjects’ responses. D. By clarifying some points.
31. What do we know about the present study
A. Greater neural activity guarantees cute aggression.
B. Electrical activity in our brain occurs within milliseconds.
C. Cute aggression contributes to regulating people’s feelings.
D. People overwhelmed with emotions will experience less cute aggression.

Studying literature allows us to explore universal truths, which may deliver a lifetime sense of
wellbeing. However, such benefits were sadly not enough to persuade Sheffield Hallam University to
continue to offer an English literature degree to undergraduates. Due to falling demand for arts and
humanities courses, the university is ceasing the course. It follows a similar move by the University of
Cumbria last year and cuts to humanities funding elsewhere.
This decline is partly caused by the increasing commercialization of higher education, which values
degrees based on job prospects and starting salaries. With dramatically increasing graduates owing over
100,000 in student loans, it is understandable that young people from lower-income backgrounds might
think twice about taking a non-vocational (非职业类的) course. Applications for English studies have
fallen steadily since 2012, when the tuition fees rose to 9,000.
Meanwhile, supposedly “dead end” university courses--those which fail to deliver an instant graduate
reward in the job market are coming under increasingly aggressive inspection. This year, the Office for
Students set out plans to remove funding for “low quality” courses, defined as those where less than 60%
of participants go into good jobs or further study soon after graduating.
The overall approach is both wrong-headed and shortsighted. As Mr Graham points out, the arts and
entertainment industry has become one of the few booming areas of the economy in which Britain can
claim to be world-leading. Additionally, judging the worth of a course simply by labor market outcomes
ignores other important values, such as personal growth and cultural contribution.
A decade of marketisation, a seriously practical worldview is beginning to sweep over England’s
higher education sector. But the inner quality and worth of a course cannot be fairly judged by reference
to employment statistics and labour market outcomes. Sheffield Hallam’s decision must be a wake-up call
for those concerned to preserve the future of the arts and humanities in our universities.
32. Why did Sheffield Hallam University cease its English literature course
A. A lack of qualified teachers. B. Decreasing need for arts and humanities.
C. Poor feedback about the program. D. Rising interest in vocational courses.
33. Which factor has discouraged students from applying for humanities degrees
A. No funding from the government. B. High tuition fees and student loan debt.
C. A rise in competitive vocational programs. D. A barrier to personal growth.
34. What is the author’s attitude to the trend of reducing humanities courses in universities
A. Critical. B. Supportive. C. Neutral. D. Unconcerned.
35. Which of following is a suitable title for the text
A. Higher Education Industry: A Heated Game
B. Major Adjustment Policy: A Wake-up Call
C. Arts and Humanities: A Must-keep Program
D. Vocation and commercialization: A Focused Trend

How to Build a Positive Teenage Life
The teenage years are a critical period for personal growth. While facing challenges like academic
pressure and social expectations, developing a healthy mindset and lifestyle can help you thrive. Here are
some practical suggestions:
Focus on self-development.
Instead of blindly following trends, take time to explore your true interests. For instance, you might
impulsively pick up a trendy instrument because it’s popular. 36 . True growth lies not in chasing
what’s viral, but in nurturing passions that sustain your curiosity through years of effort.
Maintain wise social interactions.
Prioritize friends who inspire you to improve and avoid harmful relationships. A 2023 survey by
China Youth Daily shows that 76% of high school students value “shared values” over “popularity” in
friendships. 37 .
Strengthen family bonds.
Strengthening family bonds begins with simple daily efforts. Even if you prefer independence, small
gestures matter. 38 . Such interactions—like playing a board game with siblings or helping parents
cook—become organic opportunities to strengthen family ties.
Engage in community service.
39 . Volunteering at a local library tutoring younger students or organizing neighborhood
recycling initiatives allows you to develop problem-solving skills while addressing real-world needs.
Such hands-on engagement not only creates tangible social impact but also shapes your resilient
leadership qualities.
Setting Realistic Expectations
TV shows and movies often depict (描述 ) teenagers unrealistically. Remember, your life doesn’t
need to mirror dramatic plots. 40 . For example, homemade videos by real teens on social media
are more authentic than fancy dramas.
A. However, this doesn’t mean you should disconnect yourself from diverse viewpoints
B. These actions don’t require grand plans but thrive in life’s ordinary moments
C. Try to communicate openly when conflicts arise instead of avoiding them
D. Social media influencers’ lifestyles don’t represent authentic teenage experiences
E. Instead, seek inspiration from real-life experiences shared by peers
F. This practice builds bridges between individual growth and collective well-being
G. But true musical mastery requires years of practice, not temporary enthusiasm

Even now, I can still recall the moment when my dream finally came true during my last year of
school.
The dream of becoming a member of my school cabinet (内阁) took shape when I was just seven.
Those school leaders were my role models as they always gave instructions, conducted activities and
represented us to give speeches on school issues. So, for the next few years, I tried so hard to make it a
reality.
When I was twelve, I wrote down my name. I prepared my election speech and then, on the afternoon
that we all gave our speeches. Everybody voted. I was hopeful and I prayed that I would win. The next
morning, at the school assembly I waited anxiously for my name to be announced. I was all set to realize
my dream.
One by one, the names were announced and the whole school cheered as the girls with the highest
votes walked up to the stage. I closed my eyes and waited for my name to be called. The last name was
read and my name wasn’t among them. I was totally heartbroken. My dream had been shattered, and I just
wanted to cry my heart out.
Then the reality struck me: I hadn’t had a chance to win. I wasn’t well known and wasn’t pretty. Girls
across the school hardly knew me. I just did not have what it took to win a school election. I was so
depressed because I had nurtured this dream for a long time.
As I cried in my room that evening, I suddenly decided I was going to stop seeing myself as a failure.
I decided that I would attend elections again in my final year at school and I would win.
I recognized that my competitors had a lot of things in their favor. Their personalities were their
biggest strength. However, I had good grades, and I was friendly and helpful. And my biggest strength
was the faith I had in myself to be a good leader.

Learn From Lei Feng
Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share with you the voluntary work I did in the local nursing house last month.
On our arrival, we were divided into groups and assigned tasks respectively. During the event, I accompanied the seniors for outdoor walks and helped them learn to use electronic devices. Also, I assisted in organizing recreational activities, such as board games and craft sessions.
Interacting with the elderly was incredibly rewarding. These activities not only allowed them to feel cared for and warm, but also gave me a precious opportunity to experience the joy of helping others and contributing to society.
Yours,
Li Hua
One possible version:
That evening, I began my election plans a whole year in advance. The first target I wanted to achieve was to familiarize myself with the girls and obtain their recognition. I did everything I could to assist them whenever they were confronted with unpleasant situations. I also attended a course on effective public speaking and occupied myself with intense training on a daily basis. With time passing by, everything seemingly went to my advantage. When the election rolled around, I delivered the speech with more confidence than before.
The day after the election, every minute seemed like an hour while I waited for the results. The question haunted me whether my efforts would bear fruit. While the girls kept encouraging me, I felt anxious that my imperfect performance would cost me the opportunity to win the election. Then came the thrilling moment when the result was announced. Instantly the principal read my name, the students erupted into thunderous applause. It dawned on me that I accomplished more than I had dreamed of.
