Early Monday morning, Deputy Chief George Healy, who has devoted 34 years of service to the city, was beginning an 18-hour drive to Disney with his family. As they traveled along the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn, traffic came to a sudden stop, and Chief Healy noticed a serious accident ahead.
Recognizing the signs of a fire, Healy sprang into action. “I jumped out of the car and started running up the highway,” he stated. Healy arrived at the scene to find two vehicles involved in the crash, with debris(碎片) spread across the road. The engine compartment of one car was covered in flames(火焰), and the fire was spreading rapidly.
With the passenger door caved in and the fire intensifying, Healy quickly assessed the situation and realized that a man was unconscious in the back seat. As the fire grew more dangerous, Healy, along with a police officer who had arrived on the scene, broke the driver’ s side window and managed to open the door. Healy climbed into the back seat to find the man trapped in his seat belt, completely unconscious.
The car was filling with smoke, and the fire threatened to consume the entire vehicle. “The situation was rapidly worsening,” Healy said. “If I didn’t remove him in fairly short order, the fire was going to consume the car.” With the help of the police officer, Healy successfully freed the man and pulled him from the burning car, just in time.
“I’ve been doing this for 34 years. I knew there was no one there and if we didn’t do something about this, the person wasn't going to get out,” said Chief Healy. “When I went back to my car, a couple of other drivers approached me and said ‘Man, you ran into that, what’ s wrong with you ’ and I’ m like, ‘I’ m a New York City firefighter; that's what New York City firefighters do’.”
24. What was Healy doing when he saw the accident
A. Returning home after visiting Disney. B. Driving his family to a park.
C. Taking a bus towards his office. D. Sitting and talking with his friend.

A. By opening the door and called him out.
B. By asking the police officer to help him out.
C. By getting into the car and pulling him out.
D. By putting off the fire and opening the door.
27. What does Healy think of his saving the passenger
A. It was his duty to do so. B. It was an occasional event.
C. He was afraid of his deeds. D. He felt grateful to the passenger.

A mixture of cement and charcoal(木炭) powder could enable houses to store a full day 's worth of energy in their concrete foundations. This new way of creating a super-capacitor(电容) — —— an alternative to batteries that can discharge energy much faster — —— could be used in the foundations of both buildings and wind power generators. When paired with renewable energy sources, it could also someday let concrete road foundations wirelessly recharge electric vehicles as they drive along.
“The materials are available for everyone all over the place, all over the world ,” says Franz-Josef Ulm at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT), “which means we don’ t have the same restriction as with batteries.”
Ulm and his teammates mixed cement and carbon black — — a very fine version of charcoal — —— with water to create a hardened block containing many branching, wire-like structures filled with the carbon. When the concrete is dipped in a common electrolyte solution(电解质溶液), the charged particles(微粒) from the electrolyte settle on the carbon-wire structures to provide energy-storing potential. They then turned two thin steel plates into a super-capacitor by separating them with a layer such as paper.
Connecting three of these super-capacitors produced the equivalent of a 3-volt battery capable of lighting up a small LED. The researchers say that the next step might be to create12-volt super-capacitors that can also be connected to provide more charging power for larger devices. The material maintained its charging and dis-charging capabilities beyond 10,000 cycles, which means, in theory, that it could provide energy storage for a solar-powered home for more than 27 years.
Yury Gogotsi at Drexel University in Pennsylvania suggested that keeping the super-capacitor in the
conductive salt solution for the lifetime of the building or road would be challenging. Still, he expressed, “The fundamental aspect of this technology is that it's two ancient materials that come together, that we have known for millennia.”
28. What does the author intend to show in paragraph 1
A. The popularity of the mixture. B. The potential of the invention.
C. The production of the new materials. D. The importance of energy sources.
29. In which aspect is the new capacitor meaningful for solar-energy
A. Mobility. B. Cost. C. Safety. D. Storage.
30. How does Yury feel about the future of the new technology
A. Dismissive. B. Negative. C. Confident. D. Curious.
31. What can be suitable title for the text
A. Great Use of Cement and Charcoal B. New Invention for Power Supply
C. Possibilities for Future Power Supply D. Challenges for the Salt Solution
D
Every organization has tons of sensitive data to protect. Crucial business data, customers’ personal information, and confidential files that should not leak outside are a few examples. The safety of data is only made possible by placing useful network security tools and techniques.
The importance of network security in the modern business atmosphere has increased after a major part of the workforce went remote. Today, the office system is distributed in one huge network across multiple locations. A centralized system to protect network devices from being attacked doesn't exist in the same capacity. This design leaves more vulnerable(脆弱的) points that hackers can take advantage of.
A cybercriminal can find these vulnerable points and cause damage to the internal system. An incident like this will lead to loss of funds, confidential information, and customer data, and it will also destroy the reputation of the business in the market.
In March 2020, Marriott International suffered a major data attack in which the information of 5.2 million guests was accessed using the login credentials(登录信息) of two employees. The remote work didn’t even spare Twitter. In June 2020, accounts of several high-profile personalities were attacked through phone phishing (网络钓鱼). Strong network security techniques are modern-day necessities for the survival of businesses, but more than that, network security awareness has also become the need of the hour.
In today's business, network security is not limited to IT professionals and companies connected with work security is for everyone —— —— lawyers, designers, musicians, investment bankers, etc., will all find a network security system beneficial for their work and business. By placing and learning about network security, a small business will make their employees more responsible, a law firm will be motivated to protect its data, and a designer will find more effective ways to control their heavy files.
32. What does the underlined word “confidential” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Confident. B. Large. C. Restricted. D. Popular.
33. What causes the danger of network security
A. Imperfect network security protection. B. Majority of workforce's going remote.
C. The poor modern business atmosphere. D. The openness of the present office system.
34. Why does the author mention Marriott International and Twitter
A. To tell us their high position in business.
B. To tell the carelessness of big companies.
C. To tell attacks to the network are unavoidable..
D. To tell network security awareness is a must.
35. What does the last paragraph intend to stress about the network security
A. Its limited application. B. Its great importance.
C. Its great weaknesses. D. Some effective ways.

Many years ago, it was my eighth birthday. I planned to invite a few friends to have a good time in a theme park. As we children didn’t have much money, the trip would be a packed lunch and no extras. I didn't care. After all, I was getting a special care!
The great day arrived, and my mother, younger brother, six friends, and I piled into our old beat-up station cart. We headed out of town on the 90-minute ride to the amusement park for a day of sun and fun.
About halfway to the water park, the car started running badly and the “check engine” light came on. My mom pulled the car over. We were stuck. An hour passed as we waited for someone to stop and help.
A police officer stopped to see if we were all right and called a tow truck to pick up the car. On the way to the service station, Mom told the officer that we had been headed to the water park for my birthday treat. The officer dropped us off and left after giving me a short ride in the police car as a birthday present.
At the service station, the mechanic explained the water pump needed to be replaced. The cost, plus the tow, would be $135. Mom started crying and pulled me aside. She explained we wouldn't have enough money to go anywhere but home, and we'd have to save up to go somewhere else for my birthday later. I was dis-appointed but tried not to show it, knowing even at that age that we didn't have much money.
We tried to make the best of the day, the nine of us having a picnic at the service station with the cake Mom had baked. Eventually, the mechanic called Mom into the office, saying the repairs were completed but he had to make a phone call before we could leave. He said to have a seat and wait.
