Knowing that you’re interested in table tennis in China, I am writing to recommend the sport to you.
Table tennis is highly popular in China, enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. You can find table tennis tables in many places like parks, schools and residential areas. Deeply rooted in Chinese culture, it has been a national pastime for decades. I highly recommend table tennis for two reasons. For one thing, it’s a social sport that not only brings people together but also strengthens bonds through friendly competition and teamwork. For another, it’s easy to learn and doesn’t require expensive equipment, making it accessible to everyone.

When asked why he picked up garbage in such hot weather, especially on Sunday, the old man, with sweat all over his face, replied that there was too much garbage in the park, making the park look terrible. He just did what he could to make the park tidy. I handed the old man a bottle of water and picked up garbage with him, after which I went home hurriedly. Seeing my father mowing the lawn under the hot sun, I was aware of the hard work my father had paid. Without a second thought, I went up to assist him.Looking at the tidy lawn, I felt very exhausted but delighted.

Shark attacks in the screen are amazing. That’s because your actual chances of ever being attacked by a shark are mere one in 11.5 million. That’s roughly the same as your chances of winning an Oscar, which makes shark attack survivor, Mike Coots both incredibly unlucky and lucky:When Mike was 18,he lost his leg to a shark bite.
“I was attacked by a tiger shark in late October1997.It was near my home on the island of Kauai—a typical fall morning with friends. The waves were really good, so nothing was stopping us.”That is until a large shark came right up under Mike and sank his teeth into Mike’s lower leg.As he tried to free himself, the shark bit down harder, shaking its head back and forth and tossing Mike around like a rag doll. Mike followed his instinct: He struck the shark in the face, again and again until the shark released him. As Mike swam back into shore, he realized his lower right leg was gone.Mike’s friends rushed to his aid, and sent him to the hospital.
As soon as Mike was well,he did what many of us might consider unthinkable: he started riding the waves again. In fact, his first time back was near the site of his attack. But Mike was unshaken.Instead, he was curious—why was he attacked His curiosity led him to research sharks, and Mike did learn something that would change his life: Humans are far more dangerous to sharks than the other way around.
His situation as a shark survivor empowered him to give sharks a voice,Mike says. He began working with the Hawaii state authorities to help pass a ban (禁令) on shark-derived products. “I partnered with other like-minded shark attack survivors and marine biologists, and we headed to Washington to urge (极力主张)senators to create a nationwide bill protecting sharks.”
24.Why does the author show the chances of being attacked by sharks
A. To inform readers of some relevant knowledge.
B. To highlight Mike’s unusual experience of the shark attack.
C.To attract people to watch shark attacks in the screen.
D.To show everyone has the chance of winning an Oscar.
25.How did Mike survive the shark attack
A. By screaming loudly for his friends’ help.
B. By swimming desperately to the shore.

Too much screen time for kids can lead to poor health, the American Heart Association (AHA) says. A scientific statement published by the AHA in the medical journal Circulation said screen time from smartphones, tablet computers and other devices can lead kids to a sedentary(惯于久坐不动的) lifestyle ,increasing the possibility that they grow up as overweight or obese(肥胖的).
The AHA is the latest organization urging parents to limit how much time their kids spend in front of screens. It recommends children get one to two hours of screen time each day. Although television viewing among children and teens has dropped, the use of smartphones and tablet computers has surged.
“Although the mechanisms(机制) linking screen time to obesity are not entirely clear, there are real concerns that screens influence eating behaviors, mainly because children don’t notice when they are full when eating in front of a screen,” said Tracie Barnett, a researcher at the INRS-Institut Armand-Frappier Research Centre, in a statement.
Barnett, one of the authors of the statement, also urges parents to keep screens out of kids’ bedrooms, raising the fear that too much screen time can affect sleep.
Many studies have warned about the potential (潜在的) negative effects of too much screen time. Last year, a study from researchers at San Diego State University(SDSU) found nearly half of teens who spent five or more hours in front of screens every day experienced long periods of hopelessness or sadness.
Apple, who makes the iOS mobile platform, plans to introduce new tools to devices to help users cut back on screen time. As for iOS 12, iPhones will include a screen time feature where users can control and review how they spend time on their mobile devices. Another company that makes the Android platform will introduce “digital well-being” tools such as screen time limits and a “wind down” option to encourage users to put down their phones before bed.

Las Vegas city in Nevada is built in a desert. The city may be known to the outside world for its partying. But officials have found that there are 21 square kilometers of useless grass. The grass is never laid on, played on or even stepped on. The grass is only there to look nice.
Now, the city is asking the Nevada state legislature (立法机构) to ban useless grass. It is trying to become the first place in America to ban that kind of grass often seen between streets, in housing developments and in office parks.
It is estimated that useless grass makes up 40% of all the grass in Las Vegas and it needs a lot of water to survive. Grass needs four times more water than dry climate plants like cactus. By tearing out the grass, the city could reduce yearly water usage by 15%.
In 2003, the Southern Nevada Water Authority banned developers from planting grass in front of new homes. It also offered homeowners $30 for each square meter of grass they tear out. But fewer people are now using the program. Water usage has increased in southern Nevada by 9% since 2019. And last year, Las Vegas set a record of 240 days without major rainfall. The Colorado River provides much of Nevada’s drinking water. The river could lose more water as climate change affects it.
Water officials in other dry cities said water usage needs to be reduced. But they fear the reaction to reforms like the ones in Las Vegas if their communities do not accept them. Cynthia Campbell is the water resources adviser for the city of Phoenix in Arizona. “There might come a point when city restrictions(限制)get too severe (苛刻的) for some residents. They’ll say that is the point of no return for them,” Campbell said. “For some people, it’s a pool. For some people, it’s grass.”
32. Why does Las Vegas city try to ban useless grass
A. To protect the local people. B. To beautify the city.
C. To reduce water usage. D. To reduce waste.
33. What program was carried out in Las Vegas in 2003
A. Encouraging the residents to tear out grass. B.Allowing planting grass before new houses.
C. Praising those who signed on the program. D. Awarding those who reduced water usage.
34. What is implied in Campbell’s words in the last paragraph
A. Many residents won’t follow the ban.
B. Reaction to the reform will vary personally.
C. Other measures should be taken to protect wetter.
D. Water officials should take many factors into account.
35. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. Las Vegas Plans to Ban Useless Grass B. A Method Is Adopted to Save Las Vegas
C. Choices between Beauty and Practice D. Grass Is Important but Useless in Las Vegas

It was such a nice day and it’s Sunday. I left for the park with my skateboard. There were so many kids in the central square. The parents chatted merrily in small groups, occasionally taking a glance at their kids. I skated for about half an hour and took a break on the nearby bench. Early summer morning was always the best time, the bird chirping in the trees and cool winds blowing in my face. How could I miss it Dad said he was going to mow the lawn in the yard on the weekend and asked whether I could help. I made an excuse and just ran away.
I took a look around the park before I stood up and spotted an old man on the far side of the park. He kept bending forward and threw something into a plastic bag with him I watched for a while and realized what he was doing. He was picking up the litter. At first, I thought he might be a cleaner working in the park but I had never seen him before. “Who is he It’s Sunday and he is not here for fun ” I talked to myself. I went on skating and forgot about him.
Time went fast and the sun was already high up in the sky. It was getting hot and I was tired. I was ready to go when I saw the old man again. The park was half empty. He was still there, collecting the rubbish left on the benches with much effort. Time and time again, he stopped to straighten his body but he showed no sign of leaving soon. Clearly, it was hard work for people of his age.
“Not to leave What if he has no water left in such hot weather ” I wondered.
With some hesitation, I walked toward him.
