If Confucius was still alive today and could celebrate his September 28th birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.
While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.
But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.
In the past two decades, the Chinese study programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks (缺点) of Westerners’ philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers. So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well.
Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West. As for the old thinker, even if few can remember his birthday, he will not be forgotten by people in the West.

( ) 18. What can we learn from the passage
A. Students in the USA take an active par t in studying Chinese now.
B. Businessmen in the USA prefer Chinese customers to Confucius.
C. People in the Western countries never forget Confucius’s birthday.
D. America has set up Confucius Institutes to learn Chinese culture better.
( ) 19. What’s the best title for the passage
A. Big Fans of the Big Hero
B. An Old Thinker with a Big Futur e
C. Forgotten Wisdom in America
D. Chinese Culture All over the World
( ) 20. Where is the passage likely to appear
A. In a biography (自传). B. In a science paper.
C. In a newspaper. D. In a philosophy textbook.
三、任务型阅读(10 分)
An ancient philosopher’s wisdom (哲学家的智慧) can be compared in value to gold. Now The Art of War (《 孙子兵法》 ) by the great thinker Sun Tzu has actually been printed on gold. There are 5,000 of these books in bookstores across China, costing 19,600 yuan each.
Known as the world’s oldest book on military strategy (兵法), it was firstly written on bamboo strips. Sun Tzu lived in the late Spr ing and Autumn Period. There is little information about his real life.
But according to one story, the king asked Sun Tzu to show his way of training the army. Two groups of the king’s women played the soldiers and two of the king’s favourites acted as commanders (指挥官). Sun Tzu gave them orders, but they thought it was just a game and couldn ‘t stop laughing. Sun Tzu said, “If the order is not clear, it’s my fault (错), but if the order is clear and soldiers don’t obey, it’s the commanders’ fault.” He then killed the two commanders, although the king wanted to protect them. When Sun Tzu gave new orders, all of them performed perfectly.
Sun Tzu’s book became popular with leaders in Asia and later in the West. In 1782, a Frenchman named Amiot took the book to Eur ope. It is said that Napoleon used its ideas while f ighting in Europe.
The Art of War is today used in business, sport, and even relationships. Sun Tzu is possibly the most quoted (被引用的) Chinese in the world. One saying is, “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.”

五、One possible version:
A Book I’m Interested in
Good books can bring us knowledge and pleasure. The Old Man and the Sea is my favourite book. It was written by Hemingway.
It is mainly about an old fisherman called Santiago. During the eighty-four days, the old fisherman didn’t catch a fish, but he never gave up. Finally, on the eighty-fifth day, he was surprised to catch a big fish. On the way home, the big fish was eaten by sharks, though he fought with sharks for a time. But the old fisherman won the respect of everybody.
I like reading it because it teaches me to face difficulties bravely. This book is worth collecting and reading. I think choosing books you like can improve your reading skills.
Sometimes we may not succeed, but if we try hard, we’ll never regret it.
