Nine-year-old Kason has cerebral palsy (脑瘫). The condition affects his ability to walk, so he uses a wheelchair. One day, he and his grandmother stopped at a playground in a town more than a hundred miles from his home, where he’d had a doctor’s appointment. Kason was excited because the playground had swings that he could easily use.
There wasn’t a playground with the same kind of equipment closer to Kason’s home. He imagined a park in his community where kids of all abilities could play together. So he started Kason’s Kause, an activity to create inclusive (包容的) playgrounds.
In 2022, Kason and his grandmother went to city council meetings. At each, Kason spoke to local leaders about the need for inclusive playground. “I was nervous at my first meeting, then I got better at the second one, and by the third one, I was absolutely fine, ” Kason says. “I have a motto: ‘From my heart to my brain to my mouth.’”
Kason’s courage impressed Nick Farline, who works for Kennewick’s parks and recreation department. He heard of Kason’s story. “He’s got something here,” Farline remembers thinking. “We need to listen and take it seriously.” Farline held meetings to study the city’s playgrounds, including the Playground of Dreams, in Columbia Park. Kason was invited to attend and share ideas on how to improve the playground. “It was super eye-opening,” Farline says. When it came time to name the park’s new play area, Farline adds, “We should dedicate (献给) this to Kason.”
Kason’s Korner officially opened at the Playground of Dreams on November 7, 2023. At the ceremony, Kason did the honors. In an effort to help eco-conscious consumers, a nonprofit group Free-Go in Geneva. Switzerland is making public fridges available, so restaurant owners, at-home cooks and others can use them to give away food before it goes bad. It’s part of a bigger effort by communities in Switzerland to do their part for the environment while helping to cut down on food waste.
The program costs about 840,000 to run each year and enjoys the support from both charity groups and the city government. It launched a year ago with a single fridge outside a community center in western Geneva and it now has four fridges, placed around town. A fifth one is planned before year’s end. Passers-by can grab fruit, vegetables, bread and other food from the fridges to take home for free.
Marine Delevaux is the project’s director. She said the food left in its fridges is generally snapped up within an hour after delivery. For health and legal reasons, no frozen foods, open food containers, prepared meals, or alcohol are permitted in the fridges. Contributors of food from the private sector—like restaurants—must promise to ensure the donated food is safe to eat.
Free-Go is also experimenting with scheduled pickups at apartment buildings to make it easier for residents to participate in the program. It has also set up a “hotline” that restauranteurs can use to call for getting back unused food. “Generally, when the food collected from shops and restaurants arrives in the morning, people are already waiting to help themselves,” Delevaux said, adding that the first Geneva fridge helped save some 3.2 tons of food from going to waste last year.
Because the food is free, and the donations can change, it’s uncertain what will turn up in the fridges. Some people receiving food might end up being disappointed.
Cuendet is a 54-year-old teacher. Just after leaving some vegetables that she grew, she said, “We have too much” and praised the program “because this neighborhood has a lot of need.”

Businesses are finding more uses for virtual reality (VR) as the technology develops.
VR is no longer only for gaming or enjoyment. An American company called Blue Goji is using VR to improve one’s health by making exercise more fun.
Blue Goji has offices in Austin, the capital of Texas. The company showed its workout machine called the Infinity treadmill (跑步机) at the South by Southwest festival. A person using the treadmill wears a virtual reality headset when exercising. Before starting, the user is connected to a belt to prevent falls. Then, the user plays a VR game while running on the machine. The game can transport the user into the virtual world, where he or she can be racing against virtual people.
The cost of the hardware and the computer software program is $12,000. That means much for most people. But Kyra Constam of Blue Goji says the virtual reality treadmill is ideal for places where people go to exercise, like high-end gyms or recreation centers.
Recently, Leonardo Mattiazzi tested the Infinity treadmill. Mattiazzi said he had a strong feeling to actually get running and do something that pushed his limits. He said the experience was more interesting than running inside the gym without actually going anywhere.
Constam noted that a lot of VR experiences cause motion sickness (晕动病) because people are in motion during the game, but not moving in real life. But when the user is moving on the treadmill and in the game, the chances of motion sickness are reduced. She said there is generally a learning curve for VR. The first time users feel lost, but the more you do it, the more you get used to it.
After carefully studying the users experiences, Blue Goji plans to begin selling the Infinity treadmill to the public.
