My daughter is a smart kid, but she’ d never read an entire chapter book for pleasure. She had never developed any habit of classic deep reading — with two eyes in front of paper, and nothing else going on. When I faced this truth, it felt like a parenting failure. Even though we’d read many storybooks when she was younger and we lived in a house stuffed with books, I hadn’t managed to instill (灌输) one of life’s fundamental pleasures in my kid.
As a lifelong reader, I understand how reading enhances the fabric of our experience. Yet my daughter claimed to dislike reading. I told her reading novels was the best way to learn about how people’s insides work. She said she could learn more from the people on social media, who were all about spilling their insides. I said books offered storytelling. She said, “Smartphones.” I said books taught history. She said, “The Internet.”
I could not win our debates, because few of my daughter’s arguments against reading seemed wrong to me. Yes, reading is a way to discover new worlds — so is the entire Internet. But that’s not why I wanted my daughter to pick up a book. It was about experiencing a certain magic. You know when an author describes a feeling you didn’t have, and a hundred lightbulbs go off on the top of your head I wanted her to have a chance at feeling that. A screen-based medium can’t create this kind of relationship because, by its nature, the medium must fill in all the blanks for you. Books leave space for blanks — and for the internal invention they can inspire.
So I decided to cut through all the reasoning with a cold, hard practicality: cash. I told my11-year-old I would pay her $100 to read a novel within a month. Of course, she said yes. She finished the book in seven days. Then she even asked for the sequel (续集) — at no extra charge. Will this lead to her reading Little Women Will it result in a lifelong habit of reading I don’t know. What I do know is that I finally opened a new door for her to the printed page. That feels like the best money I ever spent.
34. What does the “parenting failure” in paragraph 1 refer to
A. Failure to get along well with her daughter.
B. Failure to meet her daughter’s emotional needs.
C. Failure to develop a reading habit in her daughter.
D. Failure to provide enough storybooks in the house.
35. Why does the author want her daughter to read books
A. To help her discover new worlds.
B. To help her fill in all the blanks.
C. To help her spend less time on the Internet.
D. To let her feel a moment of deep connection.
36. How does the author feel about spending $100 to encourage her daughter to read
A. She regrets spending the money.
B. She is unsure if it will lead to a love of reading.
C. She feels disappointed with the final outcome.
D. She is confident in her daughter’s future choices.
37. What could be a best title for the passage
A. Creating a Reader: A Mother’s Journey
B. Encouraging Reading: Tips for Children
C. The Magic of Books in a Digital Age
D. The Decline of Reading Among Children

More than 90 percent of global trade today is carried out through ships — about 53,000 business ships trading internationally. That number seems to increase quickly. A 2019 study, led by researchers at McGill University in Canada, has predicted (预测) an increase in ocean traffic of anything between 240 and 1209 percent by 2050. In preparation for this increase, scientists and engineers around the world are dealing with the difficult question of how to navigate (航行) more safely.
On the west coast of the US, one such group has a single target-whales. The region is home to not only busy international ports but also the rich feeding grounds of blue, humpback and fin whales. As a result of crossovers, ship strikes are thought to be one of the leading causes of death for whale populations.
Dr Briana Abrahms, a research ecologist at NOAA Fisheries’ Southwest Fisheries Science Center, is developing an app that will allow managers and ship members to be alarmed to the possible location of blue whales. It is based on the group’s new model which predicts whale movements based on the oceanographic conditions. “Ocean conditions can change on a daily basis,” Abrahms explains. “We know what conditions the whales like, so every single day we can look at where those conditions are and predict where the whales will go.”
Of course, knowing where the whales are is hardly effective if captains ignore the information. Abrahms admits that voluntary slow-down plans for large ships on the east coast of the US (slower ships being less likely to kill whales) have seen low levels of obedience (遵守). Her hope is that more accurate data will encourage owners and managers to respond. “Part of the reason we think for the low obedience is that there isn’t much confidence among the shipping industry. If you say ‘slow down between July and November’, the shipping industry doesn’t believe that there is actually a whale there. By making it more accurate in predicting whales, we’re hoping our app will help,” Abrahms said.
38. Why does the author mention the 2019 study in Paragraph 1
A. To tell the importance of shipping industry.
B. To show the fast increase in global trade.
C. To predict ocean traffic in the following years.
D. To explain the necessity of ensuring sailing safety.
39. What’s the app designed for
A. Counting the number of whales.
B. Telling possible locations of whales.
C. Predicting the consequence of ship strikes.
D. Forecasting the oceanographic condition.
40. What’s Abrahms attitude towards the present slow-down plans
A. Critical. B. Positive.
C. Concerned. D. Unclear.
41. What is the text mainly about
A. Ways to avoid crossovers between ships and whales.
B. Methods of predicting severe weather.
C. Importance of rescuing wildlife in the sea.
D. Challenges of keeping a correct voyage.
D
If you were like the 847 U.S. consumers surveyed in a University of Massachusetts Amherst study, you’d prefer glass and believe it was the most sustainable choice. And you all would be mistaken.
“Glass was the most sought-after and most highly valued packaging type,” says Nomzamo Dlamini, lead author of the paper and a Ph.D. scholar in food science. “However, it turns out that glass is among the least sustainable.”
Consumers ranked packaging choices from most to least sustainable as follows: glass, carton (纸板), canned, and plastic. But in the case of single-serve orange juice, the most sustainable choice is actually a carton, followed by plastic, then canned, and finally, glass, despite that food packaging sustainability can vary depending on other factors like container and weight.
Lifecycle assessments by experts indicate that producing and recycling glass requires significantly more energy compared to plastic, which not only has lower production and end-of-life impacts but is also lighter, reducing transportation energy. Additionally, the steam aseptic sealing (无菌密封) process for plastic containers is more energy-efficient compared to the retort (蒸馏) system used for glass.
Using a questionnaire that models real-life situations where consumers evaluate various options and make trade-offs, Dlamini aimed to figure out what consumers believe and prefer about packaging choices.
Dlamini points out a mismatch: while many consumers intend to purchase sustainable packaging, in the end the top motivating factor was price—particularly the lowest price—followed by packaging type, product claim and packaging claim. So, the ideal orange juice option for consumers, based on the survey, is priced at $1.10 per 12 oz, packaged in glass, locally produced and labelled as 100% recyclable.
The message to the food industry is that consumers are motivated to choose sustainable packaging, as long as the price is right. “These options should be distinctly marked as environmentally friendly, effective and affordable to increase consumers’ motivation and adoption of sustainable packaging for food and drinks,” the paper states.
42. What was believed to be the least sustainable packaging option by US consumers
A. Canned. B. Glass.
C. Plastic. D. Carton.
43. What is a feature of plastic according to Paragraph 4
A. It is cheap to produce. B. It allows light to pass through.
C. It takes less energy to recycle. D. It is more flexible to be packed.
44. According to Paragraph 6, there is a disagreement between _______.
A. packaging claim and scientific facts.
B. high price and unsatisfactory quality.
C. product claim and their practical performance.
D. consumers’ intentions and their actual behavior.
45. What does Dlamini suggest the food industry do in the last paragraph
A. Price smartly and promote widely.
B. Label clearly and price reasonably.
C. Package securely and deliver quickly.
D. Research effectively and invest wisely.

Dear school teachers,
I’d like to recommend a person I admire on campus. My classmate Andy is an admirable figure who in many aspects can set a good example for us.
Through great efforts, he always ranks among the top students in our school and wins numerous prizes in various competitions. Also, he never hesitates to offer a helping hand when seeing people in trouble. Last year, he volunteered to care for the elderly in the local nursing house. In addition, what makes him a shining model student is his positive attitude towards life. In the face of challenges and obstacles, he doesn’t lose heart but tries to make a change and strives for the better.
It is his courage and determination that impress and inspire me a lot. I believe everybody can learn from him and lead a more positive and productive life on campus.
Yours sincerely,
