I began working in journalism(新闻工作)when I was eight. It was my mother's idea. She wanted me to “make something” of myself, and decided I had better start young if I was to have any chance of keeping up with the competition.
With my load of magazines I headed toward Belleville Avenue. The crowds were there. There were two gas stations on the corner of Belleville and Union. For several hours I made myself highly visible, making sure everyone could see me and the heavy black letters on the bag that said THE SATURDAY EVENING POST. When it was supper time, I walked back home.
“ How many did you sell, my boy?” my mother asked.
“ None.”
“ Where did you go?”
“ The corner of Belleville and Union Avenues.”
“ What did you do?”
“ Stood on the corner waiting for somebody to buy a Saturday Evening Post.”
“ You just stood there?”
“ Didn't sell a single one.”
“ My God, Russell!”
Uncle Allen put in, “ Well, I've decided to take the Post.” I handed him a copy and he paid me a nickle(五分镍币). It was the first nickle I earned.
Afterwards my mother taught me how to be a salesman. I would have to ring doorbells, address adults with self-confidence(自信), and persuade them by saying that no one, no matter how poor, could afford to be without the Saturday Evening Post in the home.
One day, I told my mother I'd changed my mind. I didn't want to make a success in the magazine business.
“ If you think you can change your mind like this,” she replied, “ you'll become a good-for-nothing.” She insisted that, as soon as school was over, I should start ringing doorbells, selling magazines. Whenever I said no, she would scold me.
My mother and I had fought this battle almost as long as I could remember. My mother, dissatisfied with my father's plain workman's life, determined that I would not grow up like him and his people. But never did she expect that, forty years later, such a successful journalist as me would go back to her husband's people for true life and love.

The Palace Museum, known as the Forbidden City, was the imperial(帝王的) palace of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In the early 15th century, large-size construction caused 100,000 common people to lead a hard life. The construction took 14 years and was finished in 1420. In the following year, the capital of Ming Dynasty was moved from Nanjing to Beijing. Twenty-four emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties ruled from the Forbidden City. The last dynasty fell in 1911, but Emperor Puyi still lived in the inner court. It was not until 1925 that the complex buildings were changed into a museum. Since then, the Palace has been opened to the public.
The Palace Museum is rectangular(长方形的) in shape, about 960 meters long from north to south and 750 meters wide from west to east. There is a 10-meter-high wall, encircled by a 52-meter-wide moat(护城河). In the Ming Dynasty, the wood needed for the building was brought mostly from Sichuan and Hunan Province, while in the Qing Dynasty, it was cut from the northeast of China. Most of the stones were mined from the suburban(郊外的) district of Fangshan and other districts. Construction of the Forbidden City brought huge hardship to the laboring people.
The palace is the largest piece of ancient Chinese architecture(建筑) still standing. Some of the buildings were damaged by lightning and rebuilt in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The palace has been expanded several times, but the original design was preserved. After liberation, some costly renovations(翻新) were done and the Palace Museum is listed as one of the important historical sites under special preservation by the Chinese government.

From early times, man has been interested in art. People have often worked together to collect and save the world's art treasures(珍宝).
Fine art treasures from many countries are kept in an art museum called the Louvre(卢浮宫) in Paris, France. The works of art have been collected by the people of France over many centuries. It is the biggest art museum in the world.

Over the years, the number of buildings around the castle grew. By 1350, the castle no longer needed a fort. The Louvre became a palace home for French kings and queens.
During times of peace, new treasures were brought in. During the days of war, many treasures were stolen, and the buildings were damaged.
When Francis Ⅰ became King of France in 1515, he brought in many artists from other countries. One of the artists was Leonardo da Vinci from Italy. Da Vinci's "Mona Lisa"(蒙娜丽莎) is the best known painting in the museum today.

When you watch a movie these days, it's difficult to tell what's real and what's created in a computer. In the future, visual effects could even change how movies are made.
Almost anything that can be imagined by a director can now become reality in the world of movies. "We're really not limited by the technology to build pretty much anything we want. With today's computer processing power and speed, the digital world is more realistic than ever before," said David Smith, of Sony Pictures Imageworks. For Spider-Man 2, Smith's team created a Times Square that was indistinguishable from the real one.
"But there is still one challenge for visual effects artists. We're still trying to figure out how to perfect the human face in movies," said Paul Debevec of the University of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies. Debevec added that in addition to changing the look of an actor's face, there could be another use for digital faces in the world of entertainment. There's also a big interest in trying to bring back actors who are no longer with us and that's a big deal right now.
Last year, effects artists created a digital double of deceased Asian pop singer Teresa Teng in concert with Chinese pop star Jay Chou. They created a singing face of Teresa Teng where she performed not only one of her original songs but two songs that weren't written at the time she was alive with Jay Chou.
Debevec said that with virtual production, there won't be a need for as many people behind the scenes. David Smith pointed out that computer generated locations can also be more realistic to actors.
But visual effects artists agree, even with improved technology and the potential to create anything in the virtual world, there is no replacement for a real actor interpreting a character in a movie.
41. The author used the example of Teresa Teng to ?.
A. honor the famous singer
B. attract music fans
C. show people's rebirth
D. show the power of visual effects
42. With the visual effects, making a movie will ?.
A. only rely on computers
B. make fewer people behind the scenes
C. be set on real sites and facts
D. be more difficult than ever before
43. From the last paragraph we can infer that ?.
A. visual effects have great potential
B. visual effects can create anything we want
C. visual effects can't take the place of real actors entirely
D. visual effects need to be improved
44. What's the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. The achievements in visual effects.
B. The challenge for visual effects.
C. The difficulties in visual effects.
D. People's reaction to visual effects.

Last Saturday afternoon, my friend and I were walking by the lake in Zhongshan Park when suddenly we heard a girl calling for help in the lake. We hurried to jump into the lake without taking off our clothes, swam towards her and pulled her out. Then we made her breathe using mouth-to-mouth way before she came to herself, sent her to hospital and telephoned her parents. Afterwards, we were told that the girl was saved because of the timely rescue.
Her parents were very thankful to us and the doctors thought highly of our first aid, which made us realize that knowing first aid is very important for everyone.
