The date was like any other day in his life. After school Bill walked past the shop on the street corner(角落). He stopped to look at the front row of the shoes. And he felt sorry for himself. He really wanted to have a new pair for his birthday.
He sadly walked away and thought of what to tell his mother. He knew she would give him anything if she could. But he also knew very well she had little money. He decided not to go home at once, as he looked worried and he didn't want to make his mother worry about it. So he went to the park and there he sat on the grass. Then he saw a girl in a wheel chair (轮椅). He found that the girl moved the wheels with her hands. Bill looked at her carefully and was surprised to see that the girl had no feet. He looked down at his own feet. "It is much better to be without shoes than without feet," he thought. It was not right for him to feel so sorry and sad. He went away and smiled , thinking he was luckier in life.

When you cough or sneeze, please turn your head away from others and cover your mouth with the full part of your hand. Afterwards, you should say, "Excuse me.” This is a rule I set for my students.
It is so simple, but many kids have never been told to do this. In fact, I notice adults cough and sneeze in public without putting a hand over the mouth. I hate travelling by subway(地铁)in New York during cold and flu season, because it is certain that someone is going to stand right behind me and cough or sneeze on my neck.
One important thing I point out to the kids is that after they sneeze or cough on their hand, they should wash their hands as soon as possible. Otherwise, they will be passing those germs(病菌)along to everything and everyone they touch.
In order to help the kids remember this rule, I tell them about an old story. It says that when you sneeze, evil spirits jump into your body. If you don't cover your mouth, the spirits will enter, but if you cover your mouth, you will keep them out, We say "God bless you" when someone sneezes, and in Germany you should say "Gesundheit". That means "Good health to you." Both expressions are said just in case you didn't cover your mouth in time and the spirits were able to enter your body. The kids love finding out the origins(起源)of these expressions and it encourages them to put the advice to use more often.
( )4. After coughing or sneezing on their hand, students are advised to_______.

Have you ever noticed how busy our roads are becoming Every year more and more cars are using them. Already in such countries as America, almost every family has a car. Many accidents happen because cars are now made to travel very fast. Also, people waste time and money every day as long lines of cars move slowly into towns and cities. In most big towns it is very hard to find parking spaces.
Wide, smooth(平的), straight(直的) roads must be built now in place of the old and narrow roads. These roads must not pass through towns and cities. They must not be crossed by other roads.
Today such roads are being built in many countries in the world. These roads have at least two lanes, one for slow-moving traffic and the other for fast-moving traffic.
These roads do not pass through towns and cities, horses and bikes are not allowed on them. Accidents do not usually happen. Cars can travel hundreds of miles without having to stop.
But these modern roads often cannot be built in towns and cities. Before a road in a town can be made wider, many buildings have to be pulled down.
Some people feel that more car-parks should be built outside a city, then the drivers should leave their cars and catch a bus or take a taxi to their offices.

Taboos (禁忌) of different people’s culture
A taboo (忌讳,禁忌) is a social action that is not allowed. Every culture in the world has its own taboos. The breaking of a taboo sometimes makes people feel uncomfortable. I learned this through my own experience.
Last weekend, Wang Lin and I showed two foreigners (外国人) around our city. Mr Singh was from India and Mr. White from USA. When I held out my left hand to shake hands with him, Mr. Singh seemed to be unhappy. Mr. White, however, was quite casual (随意). He said hello to me with a big smile and a wave of his hand.
In the evening, we stopped at a restaurant for dinner. I noticed that Mr. Singh didn’t touch the beef and Mr. White seemed not to like chickens’ claws (爪). During the meal, Wang Lin said sorry to Mr. Singh and continued to explain that we didn’t know it was a taboo in India to shake one’s left hand. Mr. Singh explained that since oxen (牛) are sacred (神圣的) in India, people don’t eat beef there. Mr. White joined in and said that it was not usual in the USA for people to eat chickens’ claws. He went on to say that Americans don’t usually get into each other’s personal (私人的) space. Marriage, job and age are their taboos. Isn’t it a good lesson to remember
