All languages change over time. New vocabulary is often required for the latest inventions or ideas. But a language can also change for reasons that are not clear.
Language changes whenever speakers communicate with each other. People from different places clearly speak differently, but even within the same small community, people speak differently depending on their age, origin, and social and educational background. When we communicate with these different speakers, in different situations, we hear new words and expressions and can make them a part of our own speech. Even if your family has lived in the same area for generations, you can probably see a number of differences between the language you use and the way your grandparents speak. When enough time has passed, the influence of these changes becomes clearer.
During the 18th century, Jonathan Swift, the Irish writer, and many other people felt the English language was in serious decline (衰落) and that a national organization—like those in France and Italy—should be created to save the language. Swift once wrote that we should find a way to stop our language from changing. Even today, we hear people complaining about a lack of “standards (标准)” in spoken and written English. New words and expressions, or changes in grammar, are often considered bad.
More experts believe that change in language is unavoidable. Change is a way of keeping a language alive and useful, and gives speakers different ways of saying things with extremely small differences in meaning and ways of expressing completely new ideas. The organizations set up in France and Italy have had little success in reducing the amount of change in French or Italian.
In 1747, Samuel Johnson wrote about his desire to write a dictionary that would fix the pronunciation of English and keep it pure (纯正的). But when he completed the dictionary ten years later, he admitted in his introduction that fixing a language was impossible. Like it or not, language is always changing and English will go on doing so in many creative and—to some people—annoying ways.
6.What can we learn from the second paragraph
A.Some people learn to speak better than others.
B.The youth should learn from their grandparents.
C.Language change is greatly influenced by people.
D.Language changes little if people stay in the same place.

A.He thinks it is hopeful. B.He thinks it is unfear.
C.He agrees on the change. D.He doesn’t agree on the change.
8.Why did Samuel Johnson decide to write a dictionary
A.To create some new words. B.To include some foreign words.
C.To keep English pure from changes. D.To record the changes in English.
9.What can we learn from the text

C.We don’t know how language will change. D.Scientists can create a new language.
10.What would be a suitable title for the text
A.Why does language change B.Written English needs standards.
C.Does language change influence society D.How to protect the language.
Plastic is low-cost and long-lasting. It is not easily degraded (降解) because natural degradation processes can’t deal with its chemical components (成分). It takes in other ocean-present harmful substances. These chemical and dangerous components are gradually got into the atmosphere with additives such as colors which turns out to be really harmful when the plastic breaks down.
The design and development of new plastic products was sped up after World War II. Life without plastic seemed impossible in the modern age. But even though plastic was quite convenient, the dark side of it was seen as people began to enjoy the throw-away community. Many plastic products, such as plastic bags, have a lifetime of a few minutes to hours. However, they’ll stay in the environment for hundreds of years. We are destroying the very world that nurtured us.
Just 9% of plastic has been recycled and 12% burnt after production rose in the 1950s, which leaves about 79% of the 8.3 billion tons produced sitting in landfills (垃圾填埋场) or damaging our fields, oceans, and waterways. And each year the plastic ends up as contaminants. So to beat plastic pollution, we need to work together.
While plastic burning reduces the amount of waste dumped into oceans and lands, harmful gases are still produced, which also leads to greenhouse gases. However, if we make a firm decision and use modern waste management methods, we will be able to create a safe and healthy world. It is high time that we as responsible global citizens, took on the duty of protecting our environment and made great effort in saving our mother earth, instead of just leaving everything to our government. So, ladies and gentlemen, let’s make a promise to successfully deal with plastic waste and protect our world from all possible risks.
11.What is paragraph 1 mainly about
A.The harm of plastic. B.The convenience of plastic.
C.The protection of plastic. D.The use of plastic.
12.Which word can best describe the writer’s feeling in paragraph 2

C.We need to use less plastic in life. D.Government can solve problems alone.

It’s always a happy moment when you get some pocket money. But have you ever thought about how to spend your pocket money wisely Here is some advice. Make a list. When you get your pocket money, don’t get too excited. We all have a lot of things that we want. But do you really need them That’s why it is necessary to make a list before you spend money. Start with the thing you want most. You can also write down how much it costs or how important it is in your life. By doing this, you will see if it is really necessary to buy it.
Help others. How about being more selfless (无私的) and using your pocket money to help others We all know that there are many people in the world who are in need of our help. Helping others brings out the best in us and is one of the greatest joys in our lives, So ponder using your pocket money to do something useful and helpful, and feel how you can make a difference. Save as much as you can. There is an old saying that “ Money doesn't grow on trees.” If you spend all your pocket money right away, you’ll have no money until your next “pay day”. A wallet sometimes might not be the best place to save money because it may make it easier for you to spend your money. Get a piggy bank( 储蓄罐) or ask your parents to start a savings account (账户) for you. Someday when you look back, you’ll get a strong feeling of achievement by saving so much money by yourself!

The company OpenAI introduced ChatGPT to the world. It is the latest type of AI chatboxes. A chatbox is a computer program that simulates (模仿) human conversation. Anyone can use ChatGPT now so that the company can collect people’s ideas on how to improve it.
People have tested how ChatGPT works. Reporters found out that it was able to write articles with rightful opinions for newspapers. Teachers asked it to. write answers to exam questions. ChatGPT could almost get full marks. Even programmers, people who write computer code, tried out ChatGPT. It was able to solve difficult coding challenges and answer very quickly. It even wrote short poems to explain how the coding worked. In our daily life, it helped a father brainstorm ideas of a birthday party for his son that combined the kid's two favorites, rabbits and basketball.
Moreover, when people ask ChatGPT questions, it can find mistakes. If it is asked what happened when Columbus arrived in America in 2023, older AIs might give a story. ChatGPT can recognize that Columbus reached America in the 1400s. It can also refuse to answer questions that are not proper. For example, ask it for advice on stealing a car. It will say that stealing a car is a serious crime and can have bad results. Instead, it gives advice such as “taking the bus”.
ChatGPT might help people solve problems, but the AI is trained using texts from the Internet. Often, the texts are used without being allowed by the writers of those texts. Some argue that technology doesn't respect people's work. Some argue that people will use the ChatGPT to copy others' work and sell it as their own. In 2015, Elon Musk cofounded (共同创立) OpenAI, but left it in 2018. In 2022, he bought a famous social media platform and then he pointed out that OpenAI could use the platform's database for training in the past, but not for now. Some think this AI technology is bad for the earth, too. Training ChatGPT might make more than 284 tons of CO2 and lead to climate change that will heat up the earth.

China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) announced an important achievement in deep earth exploration China’s first 10,000-meter scientific exploration well (井), named Shenditake 1, was successfully completed at a depth of 10,910 meters underground in the Tarim Basin, Xinjiang.
Humans have achieved great things by exploring the sky, the sea, and the earth. After the “Chang’e Lunar Mission” explored space and the “Jiaolong Submersible” dived deep into the sea, China has now made big progress in exploring deep into the earth. Shenditake 1, in the middle of the Taklimakan Desert, known as the “Sea of Death”, has set a new Asian record for deep earth drilling (钻探), and the well was drilled using China’s self-developed tools.
The digging process was full of challenges. From the surface to 10,000 meters, it took only 279 days, but the final 910 meters took more than 300 days to complete due to hard conditions under the ground. The well met many difficulties such as tool failures, holes falling down, and heavy loads. However, with the support of new technology and tools, Chinese engineers overcame these challenges and achieved this historic breakthrough.
This success marks an important step forward in China’s deep earth drilling engineering. Shenditake I is a proud symbol of China’s scientific and technological progress. Duan Lianru doesn’t remember how many times she has met the “Miss Photogenic”. The wild Siberian tiger (西伯利亚虎) seems to have put on a little weight recently. Duan can always recognize (认出) her easily. She has watched the tiger grow up-from when she was still a baby to the time she became old enough to leave her mother.
Duan works at a scientific research center. She has a very special job-making cards for Siberian tigers. With the help of about 5,000 cameras put in the wild, she checks hundreds of pictures on the computer every day. Then she records and compares them patiently. And the information is put in the “ID cards”, including each tiger’s patterns, activity areas, eating habits, and so on.
What Duan is doing is part of China’s efforts to protect Siberian tigers. These tigers mainly live in Russia’s Far East and Northeast China. They’re one of the world’s most endangered animals.
To save them, China has set up the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park, which has an area of over 14,000 square kilometers and spans (横跨) Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces.
