Last spring, my dad sent my siblings and me an email:“Need you to get whatever you want from home by
early May or give us the go-ahead to toss or give away.” A month later, my sisters and I flew home to Cincinnati
for the weekend to clear away our childhood belongings.
In 1984, my parents moved our family into the house where my three siblings and I grew up. When I was ten, I
got my own room. I spent the next eight years in a room with a yellowish-green rug that came with the house. All

through high school, I sat on the floor to do my homework and make collages (拼贴画) from Seventeen and US
Weekly. I cut out listings from TV Guide and wrote in my diary about how much I loved My So-Called Life. I wrote
notes to my friends and folded them in complicated ways. Twenty years ago, I graduated from high school and left
Cincinnati for good.
Some of my old things were easy to get rid of—sneakers, stuffed animals and candy wrappers from 1992.
Then there were all my school papers, from middle school on, organized in notebooks. Pages and pages on
Geoffrey Chaucer and ions (离子) and isosceles triangles (等腰三角形) , with words of encouragement from my
teachers written in the margin. Going through it all brought me back to my high school self and the things I was
focused on. In the end, I threw almost all of them away but decided to photograph them first, because I couldn’t
quite say goodbye forever.
Thinking back to high school, I remember being embarrassed and shy. I disliked my body and desperately
longed for attention from classmates. But being forced to go through all of my things gave me a new appreciation
for the other parts of who I was. Without knowing it, I was preparing for life as a photographer—I was learning
about imagery, portraiture (人像摄影) , art and self-expression. I was hungry to experience the world beyond my
room and its stained rug.

A. Too much time was wasted in high school.
B. She had been extremely popular in high school.

The first time Jessica Pate swam beside a manta (蝠鲼) ray off Florida’s southern coast, the 2.5-meter-wide
fish flipped belly-up and slowed to watch her. “I was kind of obsessed after that,” Pate says. The marine biologist
was so hooked that she founded the conservation group Florida Manta Project and has dedicated the last seven
高 2024 级英语 试卷第 4页,共 10页
years to studying mantas and their kin.
Pate’s work is paying off. Her team has since discovered the first known manta nursery in Florida’s waters.
And it’s now clear that an elusive cousin of mantas—the sicklefin devil ray (镰鳍魟) — also calls the western
Atlantic home.
Mantas and devil rays are both rays (魟) that includes 11 species, nearly all of which are endangered. That’s
partly because these rays have slow reproductive cycles, Pate says, and partly because the animals are susceptible
to injury from boat strikes or entanglement in fishing gear.
Before Pate began her work with oceanic mantas off Florida, there was only one published study of sightings
in the region. “There’s just so little awareness that manta rays are present,” she says, which makes conservation
efforts difficult.
So Pate conducts aerial drone surveys, gathers accounts of citizen sightings and spends countless hours
tagging, tracking and measuring the creatures. In 2020, her team reported the first known manta ray nursery in the
western Atlantic—and the third nursery observed globally. Unfortunately, it's located in a heavily populated coastal
area off South Florida, where recreational fishing is popular.
The project has since launched an outreach campaign to build awareness of fishing best practices, such as
keeping an eye out for mantas and reeling in lines until they've safely passed by. In 2018, a diver sent Pate a photo
of a manta that turned out to be a sicklefin devil ray—the first confirmed sighting of this species in the western
Atlantic Ocean. Pate’s follow-up analysis of aerial survey and fisheries observation data collected from 1996 to
2022 turned up 361 sicklefin devils in the western Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico.
Knowing that sicklefin devils populate the region, scientists can start filling in knowledge gaps about this
species. Pate hopes that her team’s continued efforts will help protect mantas and their kin by making the rays “as
iconic and recognizable as manatees (海牛) and sea turtles.”
28. What inspired Pate to found the conservation group Florida Manta Project
A.The economical benefits driven by fishery.
B.The great concern from the environmentalists.
C.Her personal encounter experience with the mantas.
D.The deteriorating living environment for marine lives.
29. Why was the conservation for mantas challenging before Pate’s research
A.Because mantas were not considered endangered species.
B. Because mantas were too aggressive to be tracked and studied.
C.Because the local citizens did not support conservation efforts.
D.Because there was minimal awareness that manta were present in the region.
30. How does the conservation group conduct their survey and research
A. By using multiple methods. B. By relying on underwater cameras.
C. By using satellite images exclusively. D. By focusing on historical data from fisheries only.
31. What is the main idea of the passage
A.The discovery of new species of rays in the western Atlantic Ocean.
高 2024 级英语 试卷第 5页,共 10页
B. The dangers that manta rays and their kin face from human activities.
C. The importance of public awareness in the conservation of marine life.
D. The efforts of Pate’s team to study and protect mantas and their kin.

First impressions can be harsh. One mistake, and you might feel like you ’ ll forever be seen as an idiot in
someone’s eyes. However, I believe reality is kinder than that.
Making a first impression is like trying to keep a door open with your foot. Many encounters with strangers
are brief and may never happen again. Sometimes that can be a blessing: If the person you meet doesn’t care to
remember you, you ’ll quickly fade into the crowd of strangers in their mind, avoiding any negative or lasting
impression. Other times, it can be disappointing—imagine striking up a conversation with someone interesting only
to part ways before exchanging contact information.
To avoid being forgotten, you need to do something memorable, but not something foolish. Make an
impression by asking an insightful question or something making someone laugh. This means taking risks and
avoiding bland small talk; if that’s all you offer, you’ll likely be pushed to the back of their memory, unlikely to be
remembered again.
But what if you messed up your first impression And one day you see them looking at you, recalling the time
you embarrassed yourself, and they’re walking toward you thinking, “I know you from somewhere…”
In that case, your second impression needs to be better. In my 19 years of making first impressions, some not
so great, I’ve found that people will give you a second chance if you give them something to care about. Just
because you messed up the first time doesn’t mean you should withdraw and stop being interesting. If anything,
you should try harder: Listen well, ask relevant questions, smile often, tell a joke, and share what you care about.
None of this is a guaranteed “How to Make People Like You” guide, by the way. I’m not even sure if any of
this works. But people seem to like talking to me, so maybe some of it does work.
Anyway, if this is your first impression of me, I hope it’s been a good one.
32. What does the first sentence in paragraph 2 suggest
A.First impressions are casual and fun. B.First impressions are brief and temporary.
C.First impressions are important and steady. D.First impressions are official and stereotyped.
33. How can you make a memorable first impression, according to the author
A. By engaging in small talk. B. By avoiding risky behavior.
C. By demonstrating insight or humor. D. By sharing your personal experiences.
34. What does the author recommend doing if you mess up your first impression
A. Apologizing immediately. B. Forgetting about the encounter.
C. Avoiding seeing the person again. D. Making a better second impression.
35. What tone does the author take when discussing the effectiveness of their advice
A.Playful. B.Suspenseful. C.Convincing. D.Critical.

Hobbies are more than just a fun way to kill the time. A widespread and harmful misunderstanding is that
engaging in hobbies mirrors a lack of self-discipline. 36 . In fact, hobbies can provide essential balance in
our lives and enhance overall well-being. The benefits you obtain will depend on your hobby-taking up jogging, for
instance, will benefit your cardiovascular (心血管 的) health. The point is that nearly all hobbies can provide
measurable positive health benefits.
If we regularly spend time on hobbies, we usually enjoy a higher level of fitness. 37 . A 2023
comprehensive analysis of multiple studies found strong evidence that engaging in leisure activities can improve
health by protecting against heart disease and age-related problems. But another of the researchers’ findings is
perhaps the most striking: the strong relationship between doing leisure activities and increased longevity. 38 .
It found that older adults have a 19% lower risk of disease-related death when they engage in regular leisure
activities.
39 . They are vital to sustaining our mental health. People who made a conscious effort each day to
spend time doing hobbies (no matter what they were) showed an average boost of 8% in well-being and a 10% drop
in stress and anxiety, according to a 2023 study published in the Journal of Personality. “In general, humans need
meaning, something that gives them a sense of purpose. 40 . ” says Dr Hafeez, who has led several massive
studies on hobbies. “Engaging in what you enjoy greatly enhances your well-being.”
With all these visible benefits of hobbies, why not just make time for activities that bring you joy and
fulfillment every day
A. The science backs this up
B. Hobbies make us happier
C. You gain a lot from hobbies
D. Nothing could be further from the truth
E. The more you engage in hobbies, the longer you will live
F. A different study conducted last year confirmed the impact
G. And being able to pursue your passion really contributes to that

At the Musée Guimet in Paris, Chinese musician Liu Wenwen presents a suona performance 56 (feature)
the Mogao Caves. For many audiences, this is their first encounter with suona, a traditional Chinese musical
instrument 57 (know) for its “loud, highpitched ” sound. Liu has performed suona on international stages for years.
The most memorable moment in Liu’s career came in 2017 58 she was playing Hundreds of Birds Paying
Homage to Phoenix at the Sydney Opera House. “I was the only Chinese soloist in the concert, 59 was an
incredible honor,” she said. It was also the first time she 60 (stand) in front of a global audience, so she chose
the master-piece that often represents excellence in suona performance.
According to Liu, the piece is 61 (technical) challenging. It includes mimicking various bird sounds,
creating an immersive experience that many listeners have described as feeling like they are surrounded by nature.
高 2024 级英语 试卷第 8页,共 10页
“The audience didn’t know about the instrument, but they were amazed by it,” she recalled. Even some of the
clarinet (单簧管) and oboe (双簧管) players approached Liu backstage to ask how suona is played and expressed
interest 62 learning how to play it. “I realized how much we need cultural exchange activities like this, which
can help share the 63 (rich) of Chinese culture with the world,” Liu said.
In Liu’s view, combining Chinese culture and music with symphonies can make it much 64 (easy) for them
to embrace Chinese music. Nowadays, Liu has begun experimenting with blending symphonies and even jazz and
rock music with suona. “suona can play 65 variety of music styles. This process helps change the perception
that suona is ‘old fashioned’,” Liu said.

It was New Year ’s Eve. I was 15 and feeling sad because there was not enough money to buy the dress I
wanted. We did the housework early that night, so I thought Dad wanted extra time for us to spend together. Instead,
he dressed himself again and went outside. “Come on, Elizabeth,” he said. “Dress yourself warmly. It’s cold out.”
Outside, I became even more annoyed. Not only wasn’t I getting the dress; now Dad was pulling me out in the
cold. Whatever we were going to do wasn’t going to be a quick job. I unwillingly climbed up beside Dad, the cold
already biting me. We pulled in front of the woodshed(柴棚), and started loading (装载)wood. Finally, I asked,
“Dad, what are you doing ” “Have you been by Mrs. Clark’s lately ” he asked.
Mrs. Clark lived about two miles down the road from us. Her husband had passed away the year before,
leaving her and three children to raise on her own. “ Yeah, ” I said. “Why ” “I rode by just today,” Dad said.
“Little Jake was out digging around in the woodpile, trying to find a few pieces of wood. They’re out of wood,
Elizabeth.”
That was all he said. Dad then went to the smokehouse and took down a side of bacon, telling me to go load it.

hand. “What’s in the little bag ” I asked. “Shoes. They’re out of shoes. I got the children a box of candies, too. It
just wouldn’t be New Year without some candy.” I tried to think through what Dad was doing. We did have a big
woodpile, meat and flour, so we could give some, but I knew we didn’t have any money. Mrs. Clark had closer
neighbors than us. Why should we care
We unloaded the wood behind the Clarks’ house and knocked on the door. It opened a crack(缝隙), and a
fearful voice said, “Who is it ” “James Cotton, ma’am, and my daughter, Elizabeth. Could we come in for a bit ”

Dear teachers and classmates,
Good day! Today, I'm honored to talk about an issue that concerns each of us: food safety and our healthy growth.
Food plays a vital role in maintaining our physical and mental health. A balanced diet with fresh vegetables, fruits, and whole grains can strengthen our immune system and keep us energetic. However, unhealthy food, like junk food full of food additives, may lead to various health problems, such as obesity and high blood pressure.
To ensure my own food safety, I plan to choose fresh and organic ingredients when shopping. Also, I'll carefully read food labels to avoid products with excessive additives. I believe these actions can help me stay healthy. Moreover, I'll actively spread food safety knowledge among my friends and family, aiming to raise everyone's awareness.
Let's join hands to pay attention to food safety and safeguard our healthy growth!
Thank you!

Mrs. Clark opened the door of the house where the three children were wrapped in a blanket. “We brought you a few things, ma’am,” Dad said, and handed the bags to her. She opened one bag and took out the shoes. And she bit her lower lip to keep it from trembling as tears ran down her cheeks. “We brought a load of wood, too.” Then Dad turned to me, “Elizabeth, let’s heat this place up.” Soon the fire worked and everyone was in high spirits. The kids laughed when Dad handed them each a piece of candy, and Mrs. Clark also wore a smile.
I understood very well that Dad had given me a gift much greater than a dress. Just now, I saw the three children surrounding my dad, running and laughing. I could see that they missed their dad, and I was glad that I still had mine. Dad gave me the happy look on Mrs. Clark’s face that probably hadn’t been on her face for a long time, the smiles of her three children and the best New Year memory of my life. I am so grateful that I have got the most valuable gift for the New Year.

W:Your dog is so cute. I hope my cat likes people as much as your dog does.
M:Cats are more independent than dogs. How old is your cat
W:It's five years old. It came to our house when it was two years old.(6) Your dog is three, isn't it
M:Yeah. Oh, have you ever thought of getting another pet
W:My kids want fish, (7)but I don't think fish would be a good idea. They might be too attractive for our cat. A rabbit may be a better choice. Your dog is so cute. I hope my cat likes people as much as your dog does.

W: I have something exciting to share with you.
M: Oh, is it the film you saw last night
W: Of course not. Guess what I've been saving up all my allowance and doing part time jobs around the neighborhood, and I finally managed to earn up to $1500.
M: Wow. Amazing. What are your plans for this hard earned money
W: Well, next term school fees are due soon. I know how hard you and mum work to support our family, and I want to contribute in my own way. (8)(9)
M: That's the most thoughtful thing I've ever heard. You're growing up and becoming so responsible. I'm proud of you.
W: It feels good to know that I can help out even in a small way.(9) Besides, I also intend to take part in some activities to enrich my school life.

M: So, what do you want to study when you go to college, Megan
W: I’m not sure, Mr. Sanders. My dad would be excited if I studied medicine, but that sounds too difficult. I’ve always been interested in art, but I’m not sure if I want to be a professional artist.
M: Well, you could study art history. That was my wife’s major, you know.
W: Really What did you major in
M: Oh, I always wanted to be a businessman, so that’s what I did in college. (10) It’s not for everyone, but I liked it. I wish I had taken some other classes, though. If you have a chance to learn about a bunch of different things and then make a decision, I think that would be your best bet(你最好选择). (12)
W: That’s good advice, Mr. Sanders. Thanks!
M: My pleasure. If you want to talk more, come next door anytime you want. (11)
W: I sure will. Thank you!

M: OK, your bill comes to thirty-six dollars.
W: Well, I never carry cash on me anymore. Can I just Venmo(小额支付款项的软件) it to you (13)
M: What does that mean
W: Venmo is an app that you download for your smartphone.(13) It connects to your bank or a credit card, and you can transfer money to other people in about ten seconds.
M: What That’s fast! I’ve used PayPal before, but it sometimes takes several minutes for the transfer to be completed. (14)Plus, they charge you a fee for sending the money.
W: Venmo is free if you use a checking account. But if you use a credit card, I think they charge you a small fee.
M: That’s cool. I never use my credit card, anyway. So, what can I do with the money once it’s there Can I use Venmo at stores
W: You still can’t use it at most restaurants and big chain stores, but a lot of smaller shops accept it. (15) It’s getting more popular all the time.
M: All right, how can I sign up for Venmo
W: Download the app from the App Store, and I’ll email you an invitation to join. (16)

Good morning! I’m Samuel Davis, and this is the ten o’clock news report. I hope everyone is having a fine Monday morning. It’s getting pretty wet out there, so grab an umbrella and stay dry! (17) I’m here today with Matt Miller, who has completed his 29,000-mile journey in just six weeks, with a total of 180 hours in flight. Beginning in California, he made twenty-five stops in fourteen different countries including England, Italy, Greece, Egypt, and Thailand. (18) His final trip was a sixteen-hour flight from Hawaii back to California, just half an hour less than his longest flight from Samoa to Hawaii. (19) Born in South Dakota, Matt is a freshman at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and has said that as a child he was scared of flying. All of that changed when he received his pilot license at just seventeen. After that, he only spent a few years planning everything out before beginning his journey around the world. Matt is here with us today for an interview. Welcome Matt! First, why don’t you tell all our listeners about the craziest thing you saw during your adventure (20)
