【答案】Paragraph 1:
I gathered the kids together and told them I wanted love to be visible. I really need them to give me some suggestions. I held up a pen and a notebook to show them that I was serious. Then they put forward their suggestions: bake more cookies actively, have a water balloon fight and so on. Julia gave the most. Soon, I had a list of more than a dozen suggestions. Some were completely possible, and others were really hard. But I had a starting point, I put the list on the fridge and determined to make good use of it.
Paragraph 2:
Over the next few weeks, the kids and I pulled several suggestions from the list. I made more cookies and played more games. I read books and kicked soccer balls. It was a great time. One afternoon, Julia entered the kitchen and told me she was seeing my love. Actually, didn’t change much. I just did more playing and less cleaning. I’d given them more of my time, and what I’d gotten in return was worth it.

China is a colorful country with amazing places and cultures. In this blog, we will introduce five most attractive places that you can’t miss if you are planning to go for a travel in China!
Beijing
Beijing, the capital of China for over 850 years, is the first choice for many travellers. A perfect combination of classic elegance and modernity, it is the best Chinese destination to give you a better understanding of the country. You can wander around the Forbidden City to feel the dignity of the city; or you can walk along the criss-crossing hutongs and enjoy yourself in everyday local life.
Xi’an
If you want to feel the history of China over the past 1,000 years, you can go to Beijing; however, if you want to experience the 5,000 years’ history of this ancient, oriental land, Xi’an is the best travel destination in China. As one of the four major capitals of ancient civilisation (together with Athens, Cairo, and Rome), Xi’an is the home of Chinese civilisation. The Silk Road starts from here, stretching through West China to the Mediterranean.
Guilin
Guilin, a peaceful city lying in the hilly south-western area of the country, is among the top Chinese destinations for its extraordinary natural scenery. The unique karst landscape with its four features, namely green hills, clear water, fantastic caves, and oddly-shaped rocks, makes it a famous tourist attraction.
Chengdu
Visiting the lovely giant pandas must be on everyone’s to-do list when planning a tour of the best Chinese destinations. Many cities have zoos with space for pandas, but the best place to get close to them is Chengdu for sure! Visiting Chengdu is also a treat for food lovers. Jin li Street is a great place to have a taste of well-known Sichuan food. Besides, you can also enjoy the comfortable atmosphere.

On a freezing night, Gus Kiebel, a county wildlife officer, was driving home after a long day at work. Suddenly, in the flash of his headlights, he spotted a pair of dogs. Despite the heavy snowfall that reduced visibility, he could tell they were wearing collars and tags. Gus felt a deep sense of concern and immediately pulled over his truck. With great care, he picked up the trembling dogs and brought them inside his vehicle.
He quickly took out his phone, took a picture of the dogs, and sent it to his wife, Katie. When he called the number on the tags, the cold reply from the man confirmed that the dogs had been abandoned. Gus called the county dog warden’s office, but it was after hours, so he left a message. Then he called Katie. “You cannot put them back out in the snowstorm,” she said. “Bring them home.”
That night, the Kiebels welcomed the tired dogs, prepared a warm bed, and provided food and water. Gus knew someone at an animal shelter, the League for Animal Welfare. The next day, he called, and Katie took the dogs to the shelter and asked them not to separate the pair.
In the days following Katie repeatedly phoned to check up on the dogs. Eventually, a loving family surfaced, ready to welcome the dogs and offer them a permanent home. This story serves as a vivid reminder that even in life’s darkest, most disturbed storms, kindness can offer a comforting shelter, a light of hope that clears away the darkness. It shows the beauty of our human spirit and leaves a lasting feeling of love and compassion long after the story is told.
4. Why did a pair of dogs stay outside on a cold snowy day
A. They were left homeless. B. They escaped from home.
C. They got lost in the snow. D. They waited for their owners.
5. How did Katie deal with the dogs
A. She contacted their keepers. B. She called an animal shelter.
C. She overlooked their hardship. D. She asked Gus to bring them back.
6. Which best describes Gus Kiebel
A. Self-centered and rude. B. Warm-hearted and patient.
C. Good-natured and brave. D. Narrow-minded and mean.
7 What can we learn from the story
A. Love me, love my dog. B. Storms pose threat to dogs.
C. Caring turns desperation into hope. D. Generosity awakes hope in adoption.
C
Many kinds of birds migrate (迁徙) every year, raising a family in one place during the warm summer months before flying to a warmer place to spend the cold winter months. In the northern half of the world, many birds fly north in the summer and south in the winter, looking for food and better conditions.
Many birds die along the way. Some of these deaths are the result of human actions, such as hunting or clearing huge areas of land that used to be used by migrating birds. But one of the biggest threats to migrating birds comes from things humans have built. Experts say that as many as one billion birds may die every year in the US alone as a result of flying into buildings. Other tall structures, such as power lines and cell towers, also lead to many bird deaths.
Buildings are a special challenge for migrating birds. The windows can reflect things like the sky or trees, causing birds to fly directly into the glass. And many birds migrate at night. As a result, the difficulty in migrating is amplified at night. That is because the bright city lights can confuse birds that are normally guided by the stars.
Philadelphia got a sad reminder of that last October when thousands of migrating birds were killed in one night. Over 1,000 birds were believed to have died in just one small area. Scientists still aren’t sure what made that night so bad, but it may have been connected with the low clouds over the city at the time.
Now the city begins a program called Lights Out Philly. Twice a year (from April 1 to May 31. and from August 15 to November 15), many of the city’s buildings go dark at night. The program, run by Bird Safe Philly, asks building owners and people who live in the area to keep the lights off between midnight and 6 in the morning. So far, many of the city’s best-known and tallest buildings have taken part in the program.
8. What does paragraph 2 tell us about the migration of birds
A. It takes place once a year.
B. It can affect human activities.
C. It can be hard and dangerous.
D. It is caused by human actions sometimes.
9. What does the underlined word “amplified” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Increased. B. Reduced.
C. Handled. D. Replaced.
10. What does the program run by Bird Safe Philly ask people to do
A. Stop hunting birds. B. Go out less at night.
C. Build homes for birds in cities. D. Tum off lights during the required time.
11. Why is Lights Out Philly started
A. To protect the environment.
B. To educate the public on birds.
C. To cut the cost of electricity.
D. To help birds pass Philadelphia safely.
D
I love teaching, but from the stand at the front of the room it can be hard to tell if you're having any impact at all. Until one day, you get an email from a former student detailing the influence you had on their life. We tend to believe that others are watching us less, listening to us less, and generally paying less attention to us than they actually are. Psychologist Erica Boothby and her colleagues coined the term the “invisibility cloak illusion (隐身斗篷错觉)” to describe the invisibility we often feel as we go about our daily lives.
In one study, Boothby and her coauthors surveyed students who had been dining with others in a busy campus dining hall. They randomly (随机地) assigned students exiting the dining hall to different conditions. In one condition, the students were asked how much they found themselves noticing or observing the people around them in the dining hall (i.e., their behavior, manners and appearance), how curious they had been about the people around them, and the extent to which they had wondered what was going on inside the heads people around them. Students assigned to another condition were asked how much they thought the other people in the dining hall were noticing or observing them.
Participants' ratings of how much they found themselves observing other people were more than 67 percent higher than participants' ratings of how much they thought other people were observing them. Despite the fact that everyone is busy observing everyone else, we tend to think we are somehow more invisible than the people around us.
This research drives away the wrong idea that in order to get someone to pay attention to you, you have to wave your hands around and shout. Ad executives may need to pull out all the stops in order to grab people's attention, but you don't. You already have it. You are a person, not an ad or a tweet, and people are wired to notice other people. More than that, they are wired to wonder what other people are thinking, and to adjust their own thoughts and behaviors accordingly. What this means is that you are quietly influencing the people around you all the time — without even trying, and often without realizing it.
12. What does the author intend to show by mentioning his experience
A. He dislikes working as a teacher. B. He knows little about his students.
C. He fails to recognize his influence. D. He has no confidence in his teaching.
13. What did the study try to find out about the students
A. Ways they could attract people’s attention.
B. Kinds of people they were more likely to notice.
C. The degree they thought they were being observed.
D. Reasons why they noticed some people more easily.
14. How do people adjust their own thoughts and behaviors according to the last paragraph
A. By observing other’s actions. B. By knowing their own feelings.
C. By showing their own behaviors. D. By understanding others’ thoughts.
15. What does the text mainly talk about
A People need to understand each other. B. People focus too much on themselves.
C. People are easily influenced by others. D. People tend to ignore their own influence.

My children were sitting at the kitchen table, playing a game. They had taken some cards and written a secret word on each one. Without looking at the word on the card, they had to put the card on their foreheads (前额). Then they took turns asking yes-or-no questions until they were able to guess the secret word on their card.
“Is my secret word ‘fork’ ” Jordan asked.
“Yes! You got it! You won!” both of his sisters yelled.
Minutes later, my youngest daughter Julia said, “Mommy, mine is really hard.” I nodded sympathetically (同情地). The poor girl didn’t stand a chance (根本没有机会). The card on her forehead read “love”.
She’d already asked more than a dozen questions, and each answer seemed to confuse her even more. Then she asked. “Is it invisible (看不见的) ”
Lea and Jordan looked at one another, unsure of how to answer. They asked me, “Mom, what do you think Is the word on Julia’s card invisible ”
I was lost in thought. Is love invisible In the game, it obviously was. “Well, yes, the word on Julia’s card is invisible,” I said. “We can’t see it in the same way we can see an object like a fork or a bird.”
Poor Julia shook her head. “I still don’t get it.”
I said. “Julia when I want to show you your word, I make your favorite dinner.”
Julia thought for a minute. “Is my word ‘hungry’”
I smiled. “No, but that was a good try. If you wanted to show me your word, you would give me a hug or a kiss.”
Julia’s eyes lit up. “Mom, my word is ‘love’!” I nodded, and the kids clapped. Then, they chose new cards.
But later, when the kids finished playing the game, Julia came to me and said, “Mom, I think love should never be invisible.” I smiled and nodded my head. Then, I thought about my day and how I spent my time. I had to say that I was too busy cooking and cleaning to show actual love. But young children didn’t appreciate clean floors. They didn’t even notice those things, let alone (更不用说) feel being loved. I decided to change.
