Charlotte Bront ’s father was a rural clergyman. She lost her mother when she was five. Bront ’s two older sisters died of an illness, Bront had an active imaginative life, writing stories of a fantastic world called Angria, Her first novel—Jane Eyre—was immediately and widely popular, and brought her into London literary circles, After losing all of her siblings (兄弟姐妹) to illness, Bront married a clergyman she respected, but did not love. She died at 38 of complications (并发症) of her pregnancy.
The Victorian period brought sweeping changes across British society, and writers like Bront explored its crises and progress. Abroad, the British expanded into a global empire that brought wealth from colonies, With the Industrial Revolution at home, manufacturing became Britain's economic backbone. As the middle class found profitable opportunities, anew laboring class struggled for wages, job security, and adequate working and living conditions. Jane Eyre includes themes of reforms that emerged from the crisis: better political representation, working conditions, and education. Few of these reforms came immediately for women, who had limited status in Victorian society. As Jane strives for economic and personal independence, she touches on the issues of class, economics, and gender roles that affected Victorian Britain at large.
The most popular literary form in the Victorian period was the novel, and Jane Eyre illustrates many of its defining characteristics: social relevance, plain style, and the narrative of an individual’s inner thoughts. Jane Eyre bears earlier Gothic features, with its mysteries, supernatural events, and picturesque scenery, Jane Eyre is a coming-of-age story, in which the protagonist’s (主角的)ambitions are set against the pressures and expectations of society. Victorian novels with similar styles and goals include Charles Dickens’ semi-autobiographical story, David Copperfeld (1849-1850), and Elizabeth Gaskell’s Mary Barton (1848) and North and South (1855).
The Bront s became a literary powerhouse when Charlotte, Emily, and Anne all wrote successful first novels, Each sister published under a masculine-sounding pseudonym (假名) based on their initials, Charlotte Bront became “Currer Bell”; Emily Bront wrote Wuthering Height (1845-1846) as “Ellis Bell”, and Anne Bront published Agnes Gray (1847) as “Acton Bell”.

WASHINGTON(AP)—Two-thirds of animal and plant populations are declining in genetic diversity, which makes it harder to adapt to environmental changes, according to research published Wednesday.
Long before a species goes extinct, the population becomes smaller and more scattered, shrinking(使减少) the number of potential mates and therefore genetic mixing. This leaves a species more at risk to future threats such as disease. “A surprising trend was that we saw genetic diversity declining even among many species that aren’t considered at risk,” said co-author Catherine Grueber, a conservation biologist at the University of Sydney.
Researchers examined data for 628 species studied between 1985 and 2019. The greatest losses in genetic variation were seen in birds and mammals. Findings were published in the journal Nature, “When a species has different genetic solutions, it’s better able to deal with changes,” said David Nogués-Bravo at the University of Copenhagen, who was not involved in the study, If a new disease spreads through a population or climate change affects summer rainfall, some individuals will handle better than others, in part because of their genes, Higher genetic diversity also means there’s a greater chance of a species survival.
Conservation efforts to connect separated populations-basically expanding the dating pool for a particular species can help maintain or even restore genetic diversity. Florida panthers (佛罗里达美洲狮)are an endangered species that have steadily lost habitat to freeways and urban expansion. By the mid-1990s, the remaining big cats in southern Florida showed clear signs of breeding between close relatives — with bent tails and low male fertility (生育能力), Biologists brought eight female panthers from Texas to Florida. Twenty years later, the number of Florida panthers in the wild has grown significantly and genetic diversity increased, “Isolated populations suffer,” said Duke University ecologist Stuart Pimm, who was not part of the research, “The solution is to reconnect them.” 28, Which is correct about genetic diversity according to the research
A. It remains stable across all species on earth.
B. It undergoes a small change in species at risk
C. It experiences great losses in birds and mammals.
D. It is declining sharply only in endangered species.
29. What strategy was used to increase the genetic diversity of Florida panthers
A. Building more freeways to expand their habitat.
B. Making efforts to reconnect isolated populations.
C. Restricting unplanned urban growth in southern Florida.
D. Conducting more research through conservation initiatives.
30.What is the author’s tone toward restoring genetic diversity
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Neutral. D. Indifferent.
3l. What is the best title for the text
A. Genetic Diversity Decline Threatens Species Survival
B. Two-thirds of Species Gain Genetic Diversity
C. Florida Panthers Recover Through Relocation
D. Habitat Reconnection Harms Genetic Health

Researchers have recently discovered that gut microbiome—bacteria that grow within our body—helps the brain build important social skills.
According to a paper published in PLOS Biology in November, zebra fish were used as research subjects to test how a lack of microbiome could alter social skills, Zebra fish are social animals as even 2-week-old fish starts to hang out in groups of 4 to l2.
The experiment started with making a group of fish “germ-free” through their diet. The other group were injected with a healthy mix of gut bacteria after they were hatched (孵化出来). About 15 days later, the second group began swimming in groups while the “germ-free” group “shockingly, didn’t,” Judith Eisen, a coauthor of the new research, said to Quanta Magazine.
The team then examined the fish’s brains, discovering obvious differences between the two groups. The ones who lacked the gut microbiome had more interconnections among the neurons (神经元) in their brains in charge of social behavior, It also led to fewer microglia, the neural immune cells that help clean the brain’s unwanted neurons, With less microglia to clear the brain’s neurons, social neurons were seen to have overgrown, This made the fish more cautious in social situations. Scientists hypothesized (假设) that the bacteria could release a special chemical that crosses the blood-brain barrier to reach the brain directly. Or, the immune cells might move between the gut and the brain, sending messages. Although the experiments were only on fish, the findings can theoretically be applied to humans, The team wishes to explore how gut microbiome affects the human brain in the future, which may lead to solutions to mental health problems.
Perhaps many people who claim that they have “social phobia (社交恐惧症)” can blame their guts, However, social phobia, or social anxiety disorder, can be a serious illness if overlooked, According to the National Health Service in the UK, it is more than shyness but instead a constant fear of social situations. Patients may experience panic attacks which are an overwhelming fear and anxiety that last for a few minutes.
32. What is the primary purpose of the experiment
A. To determine the dietary preferences of zebra fish.
B. To explore the reproductive habits of social animals.
C. To compare the neural structures of different fish species.
D. To investigate the impact of gut microbiome on social behavior
33. What can be inferred from the passage about the “germ-free” fish
A. They had an increased number of microglia compared to the others.
B. They behaved in a less cautious way when interacting with other fish.
C. They had more interconnections in the brain areas responsible for social behavior
D. They swam in larger groups than the fish with gut bacteria at the very beginning.
34. How might gut bacteria influence the brain as assumed by scientists
A. Direct neural connections between the gut and the brain.
B. Release of a chemical that can cross the blood-brain barrier.
C. The alteration of the fish’s DNA to change brain structure.
D. The physical movement of bacteria from the gut to the brain.
35.What is the main idea of the passage
A. It emphasizes the importance of social behavior in the animal studies.
B. It shows how social phobia can be easily cured by improving gut health
C. It highlights the complexity and uncertainty of scientific experiments.
D. It discusses the potential link between gut bacteria and social behavior.

What do large crowds of people and water have in common They both act like fluids.
A clear example of the fluid dynamics at play in crowds is the masses at the San Fermin Festival in Pamplona, Spain. Each July, festival goers celebrate the running of the bulls. On the first day of the festival, around five thousand people gather in the town square and wave a red handkerchief, The crowd is so packed that it would be like fitting 900 people in a one-bedroom apartment. They cheer and sway(随节奏摆动). 36 江苏省海安高级中学 景苏华 QQ:771515126
Denis Bartolo, a physicist at the Institute of Advanced Education in Lyon, France, spent four years filming the movements of the San Fermin Festival crowd from rooftops.
Bartolo notes that while “dense(密集的) crowds by themselves are not dangerous” sudden movement in dense crowds can develop into something dangerous. A tragic example is the 202l Astroworld Festival in Houston, where ten fans died in a crowd crush.
37 But in the study published Wednesday in the journal Nature, Bartolo and his team were able to break down the physics of the crowd's fluctuations(流动). 38 For the first time, it was found that dense crowds actually followed in predictable, repeating patterns.
“ 39 They are very easy to detect very early on before they become dangerous,” says Bartolo.
Understanding the fluid-like physics of crowds brings scientists closer to preventing disasters, and the findings could help authorities monitor crowds in real time.
So if you feel like a large crowd you’re in might be becoming dangerous, what can you do in the meantime 40 “Stay in the center. Do not go to the boundaries. No sitting down or getting low to the ground,” he advises.
A. The movements occur in irregular patterns.
B. Bartolo suggests staying away from rigid walls.
C. The movement looks like ripples (涟漪) of water.
D. These sudden motions are periodic (周期性的) in time.
E. People believed that a dense crowd moved in a predictable way.
F. The crowd was modeled and it was confirmed that it acted like a fluid.
G. It was thought that crowd movements were random, chaotic in the past.

After Walter Bergen’s wife died, he was thrown into deep sorrow and loneliness. He paid no attention to anything. His house fell into disrepair, with dust gathering everywhere and dirty dishes piling up in the sink, He gave up cooking and survived on TV dinners and toast. His clothes went unwashed, and he neglected his personal care, with a shaggy (乱蓬蓬的) beard and messy hair.
His daughter, Melanie, was extremely worried, She drove to his house and pleaded(恳求), “Dad! This isn’t right, You can’t stay here, Come live with us.” But Walter shot back angrily, “I don’t want to live in your house, I’m fine. Just leave me alone!” Melanie left, her heart heavy with concern.
A few weeks later, Walter walked to the supermarket to buy his usual TV dinners and bread. As he crossed the road, his mind elsewhere, he didn't look either way. A car hit him, and an ambulance rushed him to the hospital, At the hospital, Melanie exclaimed, “Dad! You’re not living alone anymore. You’re coming to our house.” Walter, weak and defeated, finally agreed.
At Melanie’s house, her husband Roger wasn’t pleased, “Your father is dirty and always in a bad mood. Why is he living with us ” he complained, Melanie firmly replied, “He’s my father. He’s old and heartbroken. He needs to stay.” Roger sighed and said, “I understand.”
Rosa, Melanie and Roger’s daughter, was nine years old. One evening during dinner Melanie announced, “Tomorrow, Rosa’s school has Grandparent’s Day.” Walter, curious, asked, “What’s Grandparent’s Day ” Melanie explained, “The children’s grandparents visit the school, watch the kids’ activities, and play games with them. It’s really fun. Walter declared, “I’m Rosa’s grandfather. I’ll go.” Upon hearing this, Rosa jumped up, ran to her room and locked herself in. Later that night, as Walter was about to go to bed and walked past Rosa’s room, he heard her sobbing. Then followed Roger’s voice, “Rosa, stop crying. Grandpa is just going through a tough time.”

Outside the room, Walter froze. Then, his slippers shuffled away, leaving a trail of hollow footsteps. Then came the next day. The students went to the school hall to find their grandparents, Rosa stood by the hall door, her hands sweaty. Kids around her laughed, dragging grandparents to fun activities. Her heart raced what if Grandpa didn’t come She’d be alone. But what if he showed up looking messy She twisted the edge of her shirt sleeve nervously. Suddenly, shiny shoes appeared, A tall man in a neat blue suit smiled Grandpa Walter! He knelt, smelling clean, not old. “You are right, dear,” he said, “You deserve a grandpa who tries harder.
