(2024·重庆·中考真题)On Saturday morning, all the summer world was sweet and fresh. There was cheer in every face and a spring in every step, except Tom Sawyer.
Aunt Polly made him paint their fence (栅栏) as a punishment. It was 90 feet long and 9 feet high. He stared at the fence, and all gladness left him. He painted one board and stopped. “This will take forever,” he sighed (叹气).
He knew the boys with all kinds of toys would soon come along and make fun of him —the very thought of it burnt him like fire. At this dark and hopeless moment, an idea came to him! He went back to work quietly.
Ben Rogers came along the road. He was singing happily and carrying a big apple.
Tom went on painting—paid no attention to him. Ben stared a moment and called Tom.
No answer. Tom surveyed his last touch with the eye of an artist, then he gave his brush another gentle sweep. Ben called him again.
“Why, it’s you, Ben! I wasn’t noticing.” Tom turned suddenly and said.
“I’m going to swim,” said Ben. “Do you want to come Oh, you have to work, don’t you What a pity!”
“I’m not working.” Tom answered carelessly. “Well, maybe it is working, but I like it.”
“What ” shouted Ben. “You like it ”
“Well, I don’t see why I shouldn’t,” Tom kept painting, and said. “Boys don’t get to paint a fence every day.”
That put the thing in a new light. Ben stopped eating his apple and watched Tom for a while. Tom swept his brush gently back and forth. The fence looked clean and white. Before long. Ben really wanted to paint, too! “Let me try a little,” he begged (乞求) Tom.
Tom considered, “No, Ben, I can’t. Aunt Polly warned me to do it well. Only one boy in a thousand has the talent to paint.”
“Oh, please, Tom,” said Ben. “I can do it. I’ll be very careful. I’ll give you half my apple. Wait, I’ll give you all of it.”
Tom gave Ben his brush with worry on his face but joy in his heart. Tom rested under the tree. He ate the apple and smiled.

(2024·重庆·中考真题)Standing on the beach of Copacabana, I come to realize that any understanding of Brazil really begins on its beaches. Everyone here has his or her perfect beach and is ready to tell you where to find it. I’m happy to take people’s advice, but my final goal is to find my own dream beach.
I head to Bahia, a place with Brazil’s best coastline. Over the centuries, people of many races have arrived here, creating a wonderful cultural mix. This mix influences Bahia’s language, food, music, and dance.

As I enter the water, I have the feeling of swimming through moonlight. Prainha’s beauty is like something you might see in a postcard. But for me, it’s a little too perfect. ▲

(24-25九年级下·重庆九龙坡·开学考试)Resting my head on Hannah’s shoulder, I put my arms round her waist. She drew me to her, and we rested silently.
We had not sat long before another person came in.
Some heavy clouds, swept from the sky by a rising wind, had left the moon bright and her light, coming in through a window near, shone full both on us and on the coming person, Miss Temple.
“I came on purpose to find you, Jane Eyre,” she said. “I want you in my room, and as Hannah Burns is with you, she may come too.”
We followed Miss Temple to her apartment. It had a good fire, and looked cheerful.
Miss Temple told Hannah Burns to be seated in a low arm-chair on one side of the fire place, and herself taking another, she called me to her side.
“Is it all over ” she asked, looking down at my face. “Have you cried your sadness away ”
“I am afraid I never shall do that.”
“Why ”
“Because I have been wrongly accused (指责) , and you and everybody else, will now think me a bad girl.”
“We shall think of you as what you prove (证明) yourself to be, my child. Continue to act as a good girl, and you will satisfy us.”

(24-25九年级下·重庆·开学考试)The cold wind swept away the last piece of warmth. A dead leaf fell at Soapy’s feet. That was a special sign for him that the cold winter was coming.
The three months’ life in the prison (监狱) on Blackwell’s island was what he wanted. Three months of free food every day and a bed every night, three months safe from cops (警察). This seemed the most expected thing to Soapy in the world. For years, the prison had been his winter home.
There were many easy ways of doing this. The best way was having a good dinner at a fine restaurant. Then he would say that he had no money to pay. And then a cop would be called. The cop would catch him. He would be taken to a judge (法官). The judge would do the rest. Thinking about this, he had a spark of hope in his heart.
But when Soapy put his foot inside the restaurant door, the waiter saw his broken old shoes and clothes. Strong hands pushed Soapy around and moved him outside again. The failure for the first time let him down.
Days later, Soapy went to a shop. It had a wide glass window. Soapy picked up a big stone and threw it through the glass. People came running around the corner. A cop was the first among them. Soapy stood still, and he smiled happily when he saw the cop.
“Where’s the man that did that ” asked the cop.
“Don’t you think that I might have done it ” said Soapy. What he wanted was coming toward him.
But the cop didn’t consider Soapy. That’s because men who break windows do not stop there to talk to cops. They run away as fast as they can. The cop saw a man further along the street, running. He ran after him. Soapy’s heart was filled with sadness, and he walked slowly away. He had failed two times.

(24-25九年级下·重庆·阶段练习)Fern loved Wilbur, her pet pig, more than anything. Every morning, as soon as she got up, she warmed his milk, tied his bib (围兜) on, and held the bottle for him. Every afternoon, when the school bus stopped in front of her house, she jumped out and ran to the kitchen to fix another bottle for him. She fed him again at supper time, and again just before going to bed. Mrs. Arable, Fern’s mother, gave Wilbur a feeding around noontime each day, when Fern was away in school. Wilbur loved his milk, and he was never happier than when Fern was warming up a bottle for him. He would stand and watch her with loving eyes, which could always light up Fern’s day.
For the first few days of his life, Wilbur was allowed to live in a box near the fireplace in the kitchen. But when Mrs. Arable strongly objected, the poor little thing had to be moved to the woodshed (柴房). At two weeks of age, he was moved outdoors. It was spring time, and the days were getting warmer. Mr. Arable fixed a small yard specially for Wilbur under an apple tree, and gave him a large wooden box full of straw (稻草), with a doorway cut in it so he could walk in and out as he pleased.
“Won’t he be cold at night ” asked Fern worriedly.
“No,” said her father. “You watch and see what he does.” Carrying a bottle of milk, Fern sat down under the apple tree inside the yard. Wilbur ran to her and she held the bottle for him while he drank. When he had finished the last drop, he grunted (发出咕噜) and walked sleepily into the box. Fern looked through the door. Wilbur was pushing the straw with his nose, quickly digging a hole to hide in. Soon, he disappeared under the straw. Fern smiled. What a relief it was for her to know that her baby would sleep covered up, and would stay warm.

“Tonight,” Ned Land repeated. “We are only a few miles off the Spanish coast. It will be dark, nobody will find us! And the wind is blowing in the right direction. You agreed, Dr. Aronnax, to escape (逃跑) with me. Remember your promise!” I said nothing. “At nine o’clock.” he continued, “I will go to the stair with Conseil. You will wait in the library for our signal. I have already put some food in the boat. Everything is done!”
“The sea is quite rough (汹涌),” I said.
“Yes, but if we don’t go tonight, we will soon be too far from land!” I knew that he was right. I was also frightened. What would Captain Nemo do if he discovered our plan, or if we failed I had not seen him for several days. Now, I did not want to see him. I stay in my room as the hours slowly passed.
At seven o’clock, I had dinner in my room. Only two hours to go! I kept thinking what would happen if we failed or got caught though I had a headache. I walked up and down in my room. As I looked around, I saw that Captain Nemo’s bedroom door was open. The room was empty.
It was eight o’clock, and I went to the dark library. As I waited, I felt a bump as the submarine (潜水艇) came to rest on the ocean floor.
The library door opened, and Captain Nemo entered. He told me that we were in Vigo Bav. A Spanish admiral (海军上将) had burned his own ships there in 1702 to prevent the British Navy from taking the huge amount of gold they were carrying. He took me to the window.

A few hundred kilometers out in the Atlantic, the islands of Fernando de Noronha are a national park, rich with birds and sea life. I visit a number of beaches on Fernando, but I leave the best one for last.

(2025·重庆九龙坡·一模)One afternoon, Heidi and Clara were sitting in the garden of the grand house in Frankfurt. Clara, who was confined (受限制的) to a wheelchair, looked at Heidi with a sad expression.
“I wish I could run and play like you, Heidi,” Clara said. “I’ve never been able to walk, and the doctors say I never will.”
Heidi felt sorry for her friend. “But there must be something we can do! The mountains made me strong—maybe they could help you too.”
Clara shook her head. “Papa says the mountains are too far away, and the journey would be too difficult for me.”
Just then, Clara’s strict teacher, Fraulein Rottenmeier, appeared. She frowned (皱眉) at Heidi. “What are you two talking about Clara, you should be resting, not wasting your energy on silly dreams.”
Heidi stood up, her face turned red with anger. “It’s not a silly dream! Clara could get better if she just tried!”
Fraulein Rottenmeier’s eyes narrowed. “How dare you speak to me like that! You are here to be a companion (同伴) to Clara, not to fill her head with rubbish.”
Clara looked down, her hands trembling. “Please, don’t fight. I don’t want to cause trouble.”
Heidi went down on her knees beside Clara’s wheelchair. “You’re not causing trouble. I just want to help you.”
Fraulein Rottenmeier crossed her arms. “Enough of this! Heidi, go to your room and think about your behavior. Clara, it’s time for your medicine.”
Heidi hesitated (犹豫), but Clara gave her a small nod. Unwillingly, Heidi walked back into the house, her heart heavy. She didn’t understand why no one believed that Clara could get better.
“Shall I, Miss Temple ”
“You will,” said Miss Temple. “You have been accused of lying when you were little. Tell us the truth, but add nothing and exaggerate (夸大) nothing.”
I made up my mind that I would be the most modest (谦虚的) and the most correct. Having thought for a few minutes about where to start, I told her all the story of my sad childhood.
