In February 2025, China introduced a nationwide policy to give high school students two full days off every weekend. This change aims to reduce the heavy study pressure that students have faced for years. Before the policy, many students in provinces like Hebei only had one day or even half a day to rest each week. Now, schools are required to cancel all weekend classes and exams, allowing students to relax or explore personal interests.
According to the new rules, teachers cannot give extra (额外的) homework during weekends, but schools must keep libraries and sports fields open for students who wish to study or exercise voluntarily (自愿地). In cities like Changsha and Hangzhou, some schools have even started organizing weekend activities such as science clubs, art workshops, and community service programs.
Most students welcome the policy. “I finally have time to play basketball and read novels,” said Li Ming, a 16-ycar-old student. “I feel less tired and more focused during weekdays.” Studies also show that students who get enough rest perform better in exams. For example, a high school in Zhejiang reported a 15% improvement in average test scores after carrying out the policy.
However. some parents still worry. “Weekends used to be important for reviewing lessons. I’m afraid my child will fall behind,” said a parent. Rural (农村的) areas face bigger challenges. In villages where educational resources are limited, students have fewer chances to take part in afterschool activities. From an early age, we were taught that if we wanted to be successful, we had to study hard and get good results at school. In fact, good students may just end up doing jobs they don’t like, and some even lead an unhappy life. Why is it like that
In some parents’ eyes, school grades matter most for their kids. In reality, there are many things to consider besides school subjects. For example, how to be a happy person, what to do to keep healthy, and how to get along well with others. That is to say, school is not just enough if you want to have a great life.
Doing well in school is different from doing well in life. Studies show that people who failed at school may not end up failing in life. You may have already known that some famous people, like Thomas Edison and Steve Jobs, didn’t do very well at school or even failed to finish school. In fact, there are a lot more than just the great people who are successful in life without finishing school. They catch every chance to learn and finally make it to the top.
Life is really a long lesson, so long that you can’t define (界定) a person’s success by just one part of it. If you have already finished school, keep learning because what you have learned at school will never be enough to live a satisfying life. If you are still studying, whether you are good or bad at school, don’t take your school results too seriously as long as you have put your heart into it. Keep learning to make the most of your talents improve. That’s how you can live a happy and successful life.
1.Did Thomas Edison and Steve Jobs do very well at school
2.What do some parents think matters most for their kids
3.What should we do to live a happy and successful life
4.If you are a parent, will you only care about your child’s school grades Explain the reason.
【答案】1.No./No, they didn’t. 2.School grades. 3.We should keep learning and improve our talents. 4.No. Because I think there are many other important aspects in a child’s growth, such as their emotional health, social skills and hobbies. Only focusing on grades may put too much pressure on the child. It’s not good for the child’s growth.

Classics are the treasure of the literary (文学) world. For years, people have read them to learn more. But now, more people love “watching” these classics in videos. According to a report published by the Chinese short-video platform Douyin, the views for book-related videos jumped by 65.17 percent year-on-year.
“There are some classics that I am not interested in but required to read,” said a 14-year-old girl called He Liyan from Jiangsu. “So I usually watch a video about the book to find some interesting stories which can keep me reading.”
Some people find classic books really long and hard to understand, so they go to vloggers’ explanations (解说). “The vloggers also add personal opinions to their explanations, making the book easier to understand,” added He.
A Dream of Red Mansions (《红楼梦》) is famous for showing Chinese society with interesting characters and a fantastic writing style. It talks about family, society and human nature. These things can be fun to watch but boring and difficult to read.
“There are so many characters in the novel, which confused (使困惑) me a lot,” said 12-year-old Shao Xinyan from Hubei. “The mind maps shown in the videos make their relationships clearer.”
While reading with videos helps many people, some express different opinions and worries.
For Zhang Boren, a 13-year-old from Beijing, reading is a journey about forming a personal relationship with the text, not just learning information. “Books can let me imagine. Although videos can help a lot, they can’t show every part of a well-made story,” he said.
Eighteen-year-old Wang Hongjie from Sichuan agreed, saying, “It may weaken readers’ ability to read independently and think deeply.”

(24-25九年级下·重庆大足·阶段练习)Technology is everywhere and it influences our daily lives including the kinds of books. There are two main kinds of books—paper books and e-books for kids to choose from. The question comes, is one better than another
The industry for selling e-books became a mainstream (主流) business in the late 1990s. E-books often have more colorful photos and sounds, and they may appear a lot more interesting than paper books. Research proves that e-books are good for kids. Kids learn more information when they are reading e-books because technology is fun and more enjoyable. Studies have shown that some kids may interact better when reading e-books. Some kids may have difficulties reading certain words. An e-book with lots of images and colors puts their imaginative spirit to the test. Good e-books help kids develop their reading skills faster. Highlighted text draws more attention, and the more time readers spend looking at words and hearing them out loud, the better chances (机会) they have to remember them. What’s more, e-books are lightweight and they can easily be read over and over again.
However, e-books come with several problems, too. Many parents and even experts believe that e-books are not good for the general health of kids. Kids need to read their e-books on devices (设备) such as their mobile phones, computers or e-readers. Since kids already spend too much time using their computers or mobile phones, parents worry that reading e-books makes their kids spend too much time in front of screens. Kids are more drawn by the technology and they care less about the stories. If kids are getting all their answers from e-books, their interaction with other people is greatly decreased (减少). Discussing word meanings and characters encourages interaction and learning with others.
1.Technology doesn’t influence the kinds of books, does it
2.When did the industry for selling e-books become a mainstream business
3.What devices (设备) do kids need to read their e-books
4.Do you like reading e-books or paper books Why (Please give two reasons)
【答案】1.Yes, it does./Yes. 2.In the late 1990s. 3.Their mobile phones, computers or e-readers. 4.Paper books. Because I think students should use e-books less. Firstly reading too many e-books is bad for students’ eyesight. The second reason is that relying too much on e-books might reduce opportunities for discussing stories and ideas with others, which is important for learning and communication.(开放性试题,回答合理即可。)
【导语】本文主要探讨了电子书对儿童阅读的影响及其优缺点。
1.根据“Technology is everywhere and it influences our daily lives including the kinds of books.”可知,科技影响了书的种类。故填Yes, it does./Yes.
2.根据“The industry for selling e-books became a mainstream business in the late 1990s.”可知,电子书销售在20世纪90年代末成为主流。故填In the late 1990s.
3.根据“Kids need to read their e-books on devices such as their mobile phones, computers or e-readers.”可知,孩子需通过设备阅读电子书,如手机、电脑或电子阅读器。故填Their mobile phones, computers or e-readers.
4.本题需回答喜欢纸质书还是电子书,并给出两点理由。故填Paper books. Because I think students should use e-books less. Firstly reading too many e-books is bad for students’ eyesight. The second reason is that relying too much on e-books might reduce opportunities for discussing stories and ideas with others, which is important for learning and communication.(开放性试题,回答合理即可。)

Emily Brewster is a well-known lexicographer (词典编纂者) for Merriam-Webster Dictionary. When she was young, her grandfather used to make up funny words like “prapapatis” to play with her. These word games helped raise her interest in language.
After studying English in college, Emily worked for a company that developed reading programs for people who had trouble reading. She saw how hard it was for some people to understand words. This experience helped her decide to become a lexicographer.

Huang Xuhua, a great Chinese scientist, passed away on February 6th, 2025. But his great deeds and strong spirit will always stay in our hearts and keep lighting up China’s way forward.
Huang Xuhua was born in Guangdong Province in 1926. When he was young, he saw the hard times of his country under foreign attacks. These sad memories made him study hard. He made a promise to make the country strong with his knowledge.
In the 1950s, when China started to develop nuclear submarines (核潜艇), it was a very difficult job. Huang Xuhua was not afraid and stood up bravely. At that time, there was not much advanced technology or many resources. It was like climbing a very steep mountain. But he and his team took on this challenge To keep the project secret, they stopped contacting the outside world, even their families. Huang Xuhua left his hometown for many years.
During the design process, they met a lot of problems. They couldn’t get help from foreign experts, so they could only depend on their own research. They used simple tools like abacuses (算盘) to calculate and do experiments with great effort. Another important problem was to make sure the submarine was stable underwater. After many tests, they gradually solved these problems.
Finally, in the 1970s, China’s first nuclear submarine was built and tested successfully. This made China one of the few countries that had this ability. Huang Xuhua didn’t stop after this big success. He went on to help with the development of submarine technology.
To solve this, the government has created free online learning platforms and encouraged urban (城市的) schools to share resources with rural ones.
Many teachers believe this policy marks a turning point in China’s education. It brings both benefits (好处) and challenges to students. They suggest that ________________.

1.Are more people watching classics in videos now
2.What did He Liyan usually do with the classics she was not interested in but required to read
3.What are the reasons for some people to go to vloggers’ explanations of classic books
4.Do you prefer reading classics or “watching” classics Give at least 2 reasons. (About 35 words)

To develop her knowledge and skills, Emily decided to go back to school to study linguistics (语言学). She learned how words work, how they change over time. She also studied the history of words and the cultural contexts that shape their meanings. These skills prepared her well for her future job as a lexicographer.
Today, Emily has become a professional lexicographer, widely recognized for her achievement in the field.
Welcome to Teens Voice. I’m Ada. Today, we have Emily Brewster with us.
Ada: Emily, did you face any difficulties on the way to a professional lexicographer Emily: Certainly. My parents thought I should choose a more common career (职业), like a teacher or a nurse. They worried that I wouldn’t find a good job or make enough money. Arguments often broke out in the first two years of my career. I had to keep explaining to my parents how much I loved working with words. I also showed them some of the work I did. Gradually, they started to change. Ada: That’s great to hear! Were there any other difficulties you’d like to talk about Emily: Yes. I often spent long hours researching and writing, which led to serious neck and back pain. What’s more, the long periods of reading and writing really hurt my eyes and sometimes I even had headaches. Ada: What a difficult time you had! One last question, our students are curious about how to prepare for future career.
