【河南省新未来联考2024-2025学年高三上学期10月月考英语试题】In August 2014, Ian Sandler’s 9-year-old daughter, Riley Sandler, went to a sleepaway camp for the summer. Early one morning, at around 1:30 a.m., the family got a call from the camp.
“The voice on the other end was saying that Riley had suddenly got very sick, and they were telling me that they were taking her to a hospital and I needed to get there right away,” Sandler remembered.
Sandler and his family lived in New York City. The hospital where Riley was being transported was in upstate New York, hours away. He was too shaken up to drive, so Sandler booked a taxi. He put in an address that was in the general direction of where he needed to go. When the driver arrived, Sandler explained the situation.
“I just tried to calm down and explain, ‘My daughter is going to the hospital. Its going to be a long drive. Would you help me ’ And I still remember how kind this man was. He said, ‘I have three children of my own — get in. We’ll arrive there safe and sound’ And we drove.”
It was comforting that the driver could empathize with (感同身受) Sandler’s situation. He felt a calmness wash over him — a feeling that was soon interrupted by another phone call about Riley. She was going to be moved to a different hospital, even further away.
“I turned to the driver and I said, ‘We’re gonna be going further north.’ And he didn’t miss a beat. We drove for another three and a half hours.” When they arrived at the hospital, Sandler tried to give the driver money. But the man refused to take it. “I remember trying to tip him, and do something. He wouldn’t sake a coin. He just knew this was the worst thing that could ever happen to a parent.”

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
As soon as Sandler arrived, he heard the doctor announce that Riley was out of danger. Riley suffered from a rare condition that blocked her airway, almost preventing oxygen from getting into her lungs. After several hours of rescue, the doctor finally took her back from the hands of death. That night was one of the most difficult experiences Sandler has ever gone through. Fortunately, it turned out to be good. Yet he still thought about the taxi driver who got him to the hospital.
Sandler obtained the driver’s contact information through the taxi booking app. He told the driver the good news that his daughter was out of danger, and tried to give him the taxi fare again, but the driver insisted on not taking the money. So Sandler sent him a message. “You had no reason to take care of me in the way you did. But I am sure that 10 years afterwards, I will still be so incredibly grateful for your kindness and for bringing me to my daughter that night. That was one of the kindest, sweetest things anyone’s ever done for me.”

【安徽省皖豫名校联盟2024-2025学年高三十月联考】Wayne Boone is a 53-year-old truck driver for a paper- recycling company in Suffolk, Virginia. Every day, he drives the empty 18- heel truck up Interstate 64 in Chesapeake toward Virginia Beach, about 50 kilometers away, where he will pick up his first load of the day. One morning in April, the strong winds gave Wayne Boone’s truck a good whipping (鞭打).
He planned to change into the left lane of the G. A.Treakle Memorial Bridge when the storm let loose its full force. Rain hammered Boone’s windshield. Winds grew fierce. As he was turning, Boone’s front wheels met the wet surface just as a powerful wind blew the driver’s side of his truck. It felt like the wind lifted the truck clear off the surface. His truck crashed into the guardrail (护栏) on the far right edge.
He struggled to regain control, but another wind, blowing more violently, pushed it upward from below, lifting the truck cab (驾驶舱), with Boone inside, over the edge of the bridge before dropping it again. If he felt any hope of survival before, it disappeared. The truck aimed straight down toward the grey-black water. In the end, Boone’s truck was hanging over the bridge, under 21 meters of which was a deep river.
Boone was badly injured, half blinded by the blood pouring into his eyes and suffering from shock. He forced himself to focus. If he had any chance of escaping the cab and surviving, he had to get out of his seatbelt. Gathering all his strength, he pulled himself between the seats and put himself back as far as he could behind the driver’s seat. He struggled to grab his mobile phone, but it was out of his reach. After he was hung in the wind for an hour, waiting to die, Boone was almost exhausted. Was he going to get out of here alive He had never panicked. He had accepted his fate (命运). He was ready to go if that’s what was meant to be when he heard a noise was drawing nearer.

【答案】One possible version:
A few minutes later, Boone heard the approaching sirens(汽笛). To him, the noisy sound could have been angels singing. Hope finally flooded through him as a rescuer came down with a rope. He sighed in relief when the rescuer gave him step - by - step instructions for getting out of the window while attempting to stay as stable as possible in the storm. After getting a rope around Boone, the rescuer pulled him out through the window and fully into the wild weather, and then signaled to be pulled up to a safe place.
When the rescuer and Boone appeared on the bridge, people shouted with joy. Back on the bridge, Boone was delivered to safety and then rushed to the nearest hospital. People on the bridge all spoke highly of the rescuer’s bravery and selflessness. Exhausted as he was on his way to the hospital, Boone was full of gratitude. Without the rescuer’s timely help, he could have been dead! He whispered in his heart for many times, “Thank you!” And only then did he realize that accident is merciless while humans aren’t!

【浙江省强基联盟2024-2025学年高三上学期10月联考】A high-pitched scream stopped Laura Douglas in her tracks. Spinning around on the narrow dirt path, she thought that her cousin Cassie was in danger. Instead, Cassie was knee-deep in flowers that covered the meadow (草地) like a quilt.
“Cassie! You scared me to death! ” Laura scolded, her voice echoing through the meadow. “I am sorry, ” Cassie, absorbed in her photography, didn’t notice the thick fog rolling in, consuming the nearby mountains. “ Not again! ” Laura complained, her eyes shifting to the approaching clouds. “We gotta go! ”
Cassie's focus remained on her camera, capturing the short-lived beauty of the moment. Laura tied a red scarf around her hair, “Let’s go back to the campsite. ” The girls quickly ran down the winding path, the meadow now covered by a thick fog and a steady, cold rain. The road turned slippery, and they had to move slowly to avoid sliding down.
“It's dangerous! We need shelter now! ” Cassie screamed after a loud crack of thunder, the storm's strength increasing rapidly. Laura's keen eyes found a small cave in the rock face, partly hidden by overhanging branches. It wasn't much, but it offered a chance to escape the rain.
“Cassie, over here! ” Laura called out, her voice barely carrying over the wind.
Cassie, wet and shaking, stumbled towards the place of Laura's voice. As she approached, she could see the shelter. It wasn't perfect, but it was better than nothing.
“Smart thinking, Laura, ” Cassie said, her teeth chattering (打颤) with cold as she pressed her backpa ck close to her chest. The backpack, a tough and waterproof (防水的) model, had been a gift from her father, an experienced hiker who had insisted on its numerous pockets and sections for emergency supplies. Little did they know, his advice would prove invaluable on this day.

【答案】One possible version:
“Check your backpack, ” Laura instructed, her voice being hopeful. “ We might have something that can help us start a fire. ” Cassie nodded, her fingers trembling as she unzipped the side pocket of her backpack. She was relieved to find a flashlight, a compact emergency blanket and a small, waterproof pouch containing waterproof matches. “Bingo! ” she exclaimed, her voice filled with a mix of surprise and relief. They quickly set to work, using the waterproof matches to ignite a small fire with the dry leaves and twigs Laura had collected. The survival blanket was spread out, providing a thin layer of insulation against the cold, damp ground.
As night fell, the storm finally began to die down. The girls, exhausted but determined, decided to make a move. They knew the trail would be risky in the dark, but staying in the shelter wasn't an option either. Using the flashlight, they carefully navigated the slippery path, following the markers they had set earlier. The fog had lifted, and the moon provided just enough light to see by. Hours later, they finally reached the edge of the forest. The lights of the campsite were a welcome sight. Cassie grinned, her teeth no longer chattering, “We made it back. ” Laura nodded, her eyes meeting Cassie’s. Their adventure had been terrifying, but it had also been a test ament to their bond and their survival skills. And as they sat by the fire, sipping hot chocolate, they knew they would never forget the day they had faced the storm together.
