It was the first day of school. Li, a boy from China, was talking happily with Tom, his classmate.
When the bell rang, the teacher, Miss Hess, came in and gave Li a warm welcome. Li gave a gift for the class to her. Miss Hess opened it and said, "What a lovely gift! Could you describe it " Li replied, "Of course! It's a tangram (七巧板) made by my father. It's part of traditional Chinese culture and shows the wisdom (智慧) of Chinese people. Mesa Verde National Park, in Colorado, America, has many "cliff dwellings"— places that are built into the cliffs(悬崖)where people once lived. They look almost impossible to get to. Who lived in them, and why did they live there
People lived there about 800 years ago. Americans call them the Ancestral Puebloans(古普韦布洛人的祖先). They grew food on the mesa (平顶山), the flat land on top of the cliffs. They kept animals on the mesa too. They travelled over the mesa to trade with each other. Why didn't they build homes on the mesa
One reason was the weather. Winters were getting colder and colder. The mesa was flat and open. There was no protection from the cold winds. Most of the cliff dwellings face south or south-west from the cold north wind. Another reason people did not live on the mesa is that there were more and more people to feed. Homes on the mesa would use land that was needed to grow food. Some people say a third reason was for safety. They say different groups of Ancestral Puebloans were fighting each other. The cliff dwellings were hard to get into. so they kept the people who lived there safe. Other people don't believe it. They say the groups tract ed too much to have seen fighting. Everyone agrees that these people were the skillful builders, who used every bit of space in the cliffs to make their homes.

Imagine a perfect day: the weather is good and everything seems fine. When, suddenly, your mobile phone loses its signal, the television has no programmes, and you can't get online with your computer.
What has happened These are just the types of problems a solar storm(太阳风暴)might cause. You may not think of storms as putting our society in danger. But today, a solar storm is as serious as other bad events, such as earthquakes.
A solar storm is caused by solar flares(太阳耀斑): large explosions(爆炸)near the Sun that can give off lots of energy. The strong energy can stop the satellite systems(卫星系统)that control our computers, telecom networks and so on. These storms can even cause the power to go out for weeks or months.
Scientists have recorded some of the strongest sun flares in years. One happened around Valentine's Day, 2011. It caused radio and satellite signals to go down in some northern cities in China.
"Solar flare activity is going to be much worse than what we've seen in the past. We're not talking about a few cities losing power, it could behalf of the country, maybe more," Solar Storm , a US website about space weather, warned.

When I first started using Chinese websites I was a bit confused(疑惑的) by their design. Popular sites like Taobao and Jingdong are very "busy"—they are covered with dozens of links and flashing banners( 横幅广告). They often include a wide variety of bright colors as well, contrasting(形成对比) with the simple colors of most Western websites.
Why are Chinese sites designed this way Some say that Chinese web design hasn't caught up with the standards of Western web design practices. But I don't think this quite explains_it. Some Chinese sites such as Baidu, are quite clean-looking. You may find the real reasons in the following.
A more convincing(令人信服的) theory has to do with the Chinese language. There are no capital letters or spaces in Chinese writing--foreigners who are used to seeing these things might think that Chinese text looks very crowded.
Another thing that makes Chinese websites look so busy is the large number of links. Some sites might have hundreds of links on their front page.
In addition, there is also a language-related explanation to the phenomenon(现象). It is difficult to type Chinese characters on a Roman alphabet-based keyboard. You have to type out each character using pinyin, which can be inconvenient. So it's easier to just click the link you want instead of typing what you're looking for. Or perhaps it could just be that sometimes people prefer flashy, busy websites. Browsing(浏览) Jingdong is like stepping into a noisy, brightly-lit street market. In this way, Chinese Internet users might feel right at home when using these sites.
17.What's the biggest feature of Chinese websites
A.They are not well-designed.
B.Most of them look beautiful.
C.It's convenient for foreigners to use them.
D.They look quite" busy"and"noisy".

A.the style of Chinese web design
B.the standards of web design
C.the usage of web design practices
D.the requirements for web design
19.According to the writer, why are Chinese sites designed this way
A.Because they haven't caught up with Western standards.
B.Because they are based on the use of the Roman alphabet.
C.To make them easier to use for Chinese speakers.
D.To create a noisy online environment similar to street market.
20.The writer mainly wants to tell us ____.
A.how to search for information on Chinese websites
B.what makes the Chinese websites popular with foreigners
C.why Chinese websites are designed the way they are

It has been two months since Richard Watson placed 200 special transmitters (信号发射机) for his cows. They are parts of an AI system named Ida. This AI system can send messages to Watson's phone when his cows are healthy or when they are not feeling well. It can tell how many animals are sick to the dairy farmers (奶农) and also help them pick out the sick animals.
With the AI system, farmers can get the information from their phones instead of going to the farms to check animals every day. So this AI system can help people spend their free time doing other things. Many dairy farmers are interested in Ida. Watson is one of them. On a common morning in March, he took out his phone to check his Ida App. It showed that Cows #97800 and #97782 were eating less. This might mean that there was something wrong with them.
However, some farmers say, "I can find out the sick cow just by looking at her eyes. " Mark Rodgers is a neighbor of Watson's. He said, "This is what I can do by myself. My experience can help me look after them better. Technology isn't useful. "
Ida was developed by Yasir Khokhar, the boss of the company. He said he came up with the idea while he was living on a farm in Holland. Medflies (果蝇) are a big headache for farmers worldwide. They can lay their eggs in over 300 kinds of fruits and vegetables. The worst thing is that when they make their way into an area, it is hard to keep the products free of them.
Medflies lay eggs inside the poor fruits or vegetables. When the eggs break, they turn into worms that can seriously damage the products. The problem is that it can be hard to know that the flies are there until it's too late. The fruits and vegetables still look normal even after the eggs are laid inside. Once the damaged fruits and vegetables are sent to other places, the Medflies spread and reproduce at a surprisingly fast speed.
In the 1980s, three Medflies were found on a farm in California. To stop the problem from spreading, the local government set up a quarantine area (隔离区) where no fruits, nuts, or vegetables can be moved out. Meanwhile, it developed a program to keep Medflies under control. The plan involved using planes to spread millions of male Medflies out over the area. According to the scientists, these Medflies all have been treated with a special method to make sure that they can't help produce new Medflies. That means even though new eggs are laid, they will never grow.
Dropping millions of Medflies sounded like a bad idea, but to everyone's surprise, the program worked well. The government says the number of Medflies in California has shrunk by over 90%. Now we can fight Medflies with Medflies!

Happy Rain on a Spring Night Good rain knows its time right; It will fall when comes spring. With wind it steals in night; Mute, it moistens each thing. O'er wild lanes dark cloud spreads; In boat a lantern looms. Dawn sees saturated reds; The town's heavy with blooms. —Translated by Xu Yuanchong Du Fu
When Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu (712-770) wrote this poem, he was living in Chengdu. Sometimes he went to farm in the field. The poem shows his care for farmers.
The very first word, "good", shows the poet's joy and love for the spring rain. The rain is good indeed, as it "knows" the right time to come. Here the poet uses personification (拟人), as if the rain were smart enough to know that it should come in time for the farmer's busy plowing (农耕) season.
When the rain comes, it appears during the night. Unlike the thunder (雷) and lightning of summer storms, the quiet spring rain makes its contributions (贡献) without being known.
In the night sky, the clouds look dark and heavy, showing that there will be enough rain during the night. Then the poet imagines: tomorrow morning, all of the flowers in the city will bloom (盛开) after the rain.

You are running around in the park. But then suddenly, you fall and hurt yourself. "Ow!" you cry. This sound is very familiar to us all. Crying out when we get hurt is a natural reaction. But what is it about this sound that makes us shout it out?
Scientists from the National University of Singapore now believe they've found the answer. The effort of shouting the word "ow" actually interferes (干预) with pain messages traveling to the brain. So by shouting it out,it distracts us from the feeling of pain.
The scientists tested how long volunteers could hold their hands in very cold water. There were five rounds of the test. In the first round, they were allowed to shout "ow" when they felt pain. In another round, they had to stay silent.
The results showed that volunteers were able to keep their hands in the cold water for longer when they were allowed to shout out. They managed around 30 seconds on average, five seconds more than when they had to remain silent.
"We found that a simple vocal act such as saying 'ow' helps individuals deal with pain," the report from the scientists stated.
What's more, expressions of pain are shared among languages. While cries of "ow" or "ouch" are heard in English,South Africans yell "eina"
Scientists said in the report: "Shared among these languages is a sound during which the mouth simply opens, the tongue lies flat (水平的) and the lips unrounded. It is a simple sound that requires little control while maximizing (充分利用)

Sea turtles(海龟) live in the sea most of the time. The beaches in Florida are home to sea turtles. Female sea turtles come here from the ocean to lay eggs. Then they return to the ocean. However, the number of some of these turtle species(种类) is falling. They are in danger, so people in Florida work together as a community to protect them.
Some volunteers take direct action to help the turtles. They look closely at the sand to find out where the sea turtles lay their eyes. Then they help bury(埋藏) the eggs in order to save them from being destroyed. They are helpful in people who are studying sea turtles.
Florida's government has passed laws to save the turtles. One of these laws is "Florida's Marine Turtle Protection Act". This law prevents anyone from destroying sea turtles' nests or eggs. It helps protect the turtles from dying out.
