Vicky’s mother opened the door. She had a look at Vicky’s bedroom.
“What a mess! It looks as if a hurricane (飓风) passed through Vicky’s bedroom,” said Vicky’s mother. “I must ask her to clean it.”
Vicky was eating breakfast. Her father came into the kitchen and said, “Mom wants you to clean your room. It looks as if a hurricane passed through it.”
Joe, Vicky’s little brother, asked, “A hurricane Is that a bad thing ”
“Sure it is,” said his father.
“I’ll do it after school, Dad,” said Vicky. “My first class is geography and Mr. Miller hates people to be late.” And off she ran through the front door.
Twenty minutes later, Vicky ran into her classroom.
“Today,” said Mr. Miller, “we’re going to learn about hurricanes. Have any of you seen a hurricane ” Vicky thought about her bedroom, but she said nothing.
“I haven’t seen one. Not a real one but I watched a program on TV and I know they destroy (破坏) things and leave a mess,” said James who sat next to Vicky.
“Yes,” said Mr. Miller. “But today I’m going to surprise you. Sometimes hurricanes do good.”
“Hurricanes can be good things ” Vicky asked.
“Oh, yes,” said Mr. Miller. “Hurricanes bring a lot of water to rivers and lakes that are becoming dry. Animals and fish come back to live in them. Hurricanes also pick up heat from the very hot areas of the world and drop it in less warm places.”
“So, hurricanes can be good things,” Vicky said to herself. “I’m going to show Mom the good part.”
When Vicky got home in the afternoon, she began to clean up her bedroom. She put all of her things in their proper places.
“Mom,” she called. “Can you come here for a minute ”
Vicky’s mother put her head around the door.
“Vicky!” she said. “That looks fantastic! I told your dad this morning that it looked as if a hurricane had hit it!”
“Are you sure that’s a bad thing, Mom ” asked Vicky, smiling.

(2025·河南平顶山·模拟预测)Near my home lies a small lake surrounded by a walking path. When my children were younger, I took them to this place a few times a week. The experience of walking along the path was truly wonderful, as it allowed us to be close to nature and enjoy its beauty.
One autumn day, however, I noticed that the path wasn’t looking so good. It was full of rubbish that other walkers had left along the way. The next time we went there, I took a large bag with me. As we walked along the lake, we picked the rubbish up and put it in the bag.
Before putting the bag into the car, I looked back at the lake shining in the sun and the trees full of beautiful red and golden leaves, and I smiled. It took us twice as long as usual to get all the way around the lake. But we felt a sense of satisfaction that couldn’t be put into words. We didn’t make the lake more beautiful, but we removed some things that made it less so.
In this life we are all more important than we realize. Every single thing we do can add or take away from the beauty of this world. We all need to make wise choices to contribute to the world. We need to do our part and give something back. Maybe it is an act of kindness, a word of love, or even picking up a single piece of rubbish.

Their first stop in the aquarium was to see the penguins. Erica noticed that some of the penguins walked together. Others had little baby penguins by their side.

(2025·河南洛阳·一模)One day a man found a cocoon (茧) of a butterfly in the forest. He sat there for several hours and watched the butterfly. Suddenly a small opening appeared, and the butterfly made its great effort to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go any further.
So the man decided to help the butterfly. He cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon so that the butterfly could come out easily. But to his surprise, the butterfly got a heavy body and very small wings when it came out of the cocoon.
The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that the body would grow smaller at any moment and the wings would become larger and be able to fly. But neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling (爬) around with a heavy body and small wings. It was never able to fly.
The man was in his kindness, but he did not understand the nature rules. Before the butterfly came out of the cocoon, fluid (液体) from its body must be forced into its wings, and then it would be ready for flying. It must have a hard struggle to get through the small opening to get its freedom from the cocoon.
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If God allowed us to go through our life without any difficulties, it would make us fail. We would not be as strong as we could have been, we could never fly.

Later, Walter felt someone running after him. He turned and saw the boy. “Sir, I haven’t eaten all day. Could you lend me some money I promise to return the money!” he said.
Looking at the thin boy, Walter couldn’t help but feel sympathy (怜悯). He gave him some coins. The boy said “Thanks” and rushed off. Walter shook his head, having met many scammers (骗子) before.
Walter forgot about it soon. Unexpectedly, as he passed by the station again, he heard a boy shouting, “Sir, please wait!” Walter recognized him. The boy said, “Sir, I’ve been waiting for you for long. Finally, I can return your money!” Holding the coins, Walter felt a sudden warmth.

The next day, Walter saw the boy. He said shyly, “Sir, these children are all like me. I brought them along because they also long for surprises!”
His kindness moved Walter. All the children were interviewed and several were more suitable than the boy. However, Walter chose to keep only the boy. And he wrote down the reason: “Your kindness needs no test.” He believed someone who could share their hope with others, even in their own difficult time, deserved (值得) life’s surprises.
