Energy independence. It has a nice ring to it. Doesn’t it If you think so, you’re not alone, because energy independence has been the dream of American president for decades, and never more so than in the past few years, when the most recent oil price shock has been partly responsible for kicking off the great recession.
“Energy independence” and its rhetorical (修辞的) companion “energy security” are, however, slippery concepts that are rarely though through. What is it we want independence from, exactly
Most people would probably say that they want to be independent from imported oil. But there are reasons that we buy all that old from elsewhere.
The first reason is that we need it to keep our economy running. Yes, there is a trickle(涓涓细流)of biofuel(生物燃料)available, and more may become available, but most biofuels cause economic waste and environmental destruction.
Second, Americans have basically decided that they don’t really want to produce all their own oil. They value the environmental quality they preserve over their oil imports from abroad. Vast areas of the United States are off-limits to oil exploration and production in the name of environmental protection. To what degree are Americans really willing to endure the environmental impacts of domestic energy production in order to cut back imports
Third, there are benefits to trade. It allows for economic efficiency(效率), and when we buy things from places that have lower production costs than we do, we benefit. And although you don’t read about this much, the United States is also a large exporter of oil products, selling about 2 million barrels of petroleum products per day to about 90 countries.
There is no question that the United States imports a great deal of energy and, in fact, relies on that steady flow to maintain its economy. When that flow is interrupted, we feel the pain in short supplies and higher prices, At the same time, we get massive economic benefits when we buy the most affordable energy on the world market and when we engage in energy trade around the world.
59. What does the author say about energy independence for America
A. It sounds very attractive. B. It ensures national security.
C. It will bring oil prices down. D. It has long been everyone’s dream..
60. Why does America rely heavily on oil imports
A. It wants to expand its storage of crude oil.
B. Its own oil reserves are quickly running out.
C. Its own oil production falls short of demand.
D. It wants to keep its own environment undamaged.
61. What does the author say about oil trade
A. It proves profitable to both sides. B. It improves economic efficiency.
C. It makes for economic development. D. It saves the cost of oil exploration.

Researchers have developed new software using smart phones’ GPS and imaging abilities that determine the exact location of distant objects as well as monitor the speed and direction of moving objects. The software could eventually allow smart phone armed soldiers to target the location of their enemies. On the home front, the software could be used by everyone, including golfers judging distance to the green and biologists documenting the location of a rare animal without disturbing it.
“The great advantage of a smart phone is that it provides so many tools in a single, readily available, relatively inexpensive package,” said Qia Wang, a doctoral student who led the development of the software. “For example, on the battlefield, a soldier needs a rangefinder(测距仪), compass, GPS and other tools to get information before calling in an air strike. With our software, the soldier can have all those instruments in one device that can be purchased off the shelf. When that soldier returns from war, she can use the same software to protect her family by clocking a speeder near her children’s school and catching the criminal on video.” Wang and his colleagues developed their software to locate and track:
Targets of known size —When the size of the target is known, a single image is enough to pinpoint(确定) the target's location.
Targets of unknown size —If the exact size of a target is unknown, the software uses two images to triangulate(三角测量) the location of the target.
Moving targets —By taking a short video of a moving target, the smart phone software can calculate how fast the target is moving and in what direction it is going.
“Currently, our software is limited by the physical abilities of smart phone hardware, but the devices are improving rapidly,” Wang said. “We expect that improvements in GPS accuracy, battery life and camera resolution(分辨率) will allow our software to make even more accurate observations.”
62. From Paragraph l we can know that the new software can _______________.
A. help biologists protect rare animals B. determine the speed of moving objects
C. defend soldiers against their enemies D. locate objects in the distance exactly
63. The example given by Qia Wang is meant to _______________.
A. make an advertisement B.describe the software briefly
C. show the benefits of the software D. present the functions of smart phones
64. How does the software calculate the speed of a moving object
A. By taking a short video. B. By locating its position.
C. By taking a single image. D. By measuring real-life size.
65. What's Qia Wang's attitude towards the future of the software
A. Casual. B. Flexible C. Cautious. D. Optimistic.

My mom only had one eye. I hated her… she was such an embarrassment. My mom ran a small shop at a flea market. She collected little weeds and such to sell… anything for the money we needed. There was this one day during elementary school.
I remember that it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed. How could she do this to me I threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school… “Your mom only has one eye !” and they taunted me.
I wished that my mom would just disappear from this world so I said to my mom, “Mom, why don’t you have the other eye ! You’re only going to make me a laughingstock. Why don’t you just die ” My mom did not respond. I guess I felt a little bad, but at the same time, it felt good to think that I had said what I’d wanted to say all this time. Maybe it was because my mom hadn’t punished me, but I didn’t think that I had hurt her feelings very badly.
That night… I woke up, and went to the kitchen to get a glass of water. My mom was crying there, so quietly, as if she was afraid that she might wake me. I took a look at her, and then turned away. Because of the thing I had said to her earlier, there was something pinching at me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my mother who was crying out of her one eye. So I told myself that I would grow up and become successful, because I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty.
Then I studied really hard. I left my mother and came to Seoul and studied, and got accepted in the Seoul University with all the confidence I had. Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now I’m living happily as a successful man. I like it here because it’s a place that doesn’t remind me of my mom.
This happiness was getting bigger and bigger, when someone unexpected came to see me “What ! Who’s this !” It was my mother… Still with her one eye. It felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. My little girl ran away, scared of my mom’s eye.
And I asked her, “Who are you I don’t know you!!” as if I tried to make that real. I screamed at her “How dare you come to my house and scare my daughter! Get out of here now!!” And to this, my mother quietly answered, “oh, I’m so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address,” and she disappeared. Thank goodness… she doesn’t recognize me. I was quite relieved. I told myself that I wasn’t going to care, or think about this for the rest of my life.
Then a wave of relief came upon me… one day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. I lied to my wife saying that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went down to the old shack, that I used to call a house…just out of curiosity there, I found my mother fallen on the cold ground. But I did not shed a single tear. She had a piece of paper in her hand…. it was a letter to me.
She wrote:
My son, I think my life has been long enough now. And… I won’t visit Seoul anymore… but would it be too much to ask if I wanted you to come visit me once in a while I miss you so much. And I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion. But I decided not to go to the school…. For you… I’m sorry that I only have one eye, and I was an embarrassment for you. You see, when you were very little, you got into an accident, and lost your eye. As a mother, I couldn’t stand watching you having to grow up with only one eye… so I gave you mine… I was so proud of my son that was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place, with that eye. I was never upset at you for anything you did. The couple times that you were angry with me. I thought to myself, ‘it’s because he loves me.’ I miss the times when you were still young around me. I miss you so much. I love you. You mean the world to me.
My World Shattered. I hated the person who only lived for me . I cried for My Mother, I didn’t know of any way that will make up for my worst deeds…

Learning About Different Cultures
Most of us live in a multicultural surroundings these days. Culture can bring us together, but it can also be a cause of division. How does our own culture affect the way we view others What steps can we take to minimize problems
Once my friend, who is of Greek origin, went to Sweden on business. He was sent by the head office in the US to introduce a new computer program to their branch office in Sweden. This newly created software would cut production cost in half and speed up the time from planning to production by 30 percent, as well as make the finished product look better. After presenting this program to the managers and directors, he waited for their feedback. At first it was quiet. Then, the general manager said, “Hmm, this looks good.” in a flat voice. “Hmm, I agree,” said another. My friend was in shock. Later on, when he told this to me, he said, “My mother used expressions such as ‘Fabulous!’ and ‘Marvelous!’. These people were presented with a multibillion-dollar program, and all they could say was “Hmm. Good. I don’t understand it!”
What was the problem Culture. What is an acceptable way of expressing excitement and joy in one country is not the same in another. The Swedes were thrilled, and they thought it was a fantastic computer program. They just had a different way of showing it.
Another example: I remember my mother always telling me to look at her when she was talking to me, especially if it was something important. It was a way of showing that I was paying attention in a respectful way. Now, my friend from Nigeria told me that she never allows her children to look at her when she is talking. “I want them to respect me,” she says. Who is right Both. That’s the beauty of culture. There is no such thing as right or wrong, good or bad culture.
Of course, one has to take into consideration people living nearby. It is true that a person has to adjust to the country where he chooses to live. On the other hand, when people move into our country, we can make an effort to get to know their culture. Ask them about their country; ask them why they do certain things or wear different clothes. It can be quite interesting, actually. This doesn’t mean we have to like it, or live our lives in their way. But knowledge can definitely lead to fewer disagreements and more understanding between people.
When culture is understood and used in an appropriate way, it can give a person a feeling of belonging and security. You know what to do in different situations. For example: at the time of birth and death. Let’s give place to culture. Try to know and understand other people’s culture, and also try to analyze our own. Let’s choose our own way of life. Above all else---let’s live in peace with all men!

第六部分 书面表达 (15分)
阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
As we all know, life is full of dreams and having a good dream is of great importance in our daily life. Without a good dream, people can’t make progress; without a good dream, countries can’t develop; without a good dream, the world can’t become so beautiful! And I hold the strong belief that everyone, whether he is old or young, poor or rich, junior or senior, does have a good dream! After all, dreaming is certainly a positive part of our life, and wishing for good things, however, costs nothing!
What’s more, it is important to fly our dreams, especially for those who are Senior 3 students. It is high time for them to fly their dreams. If they can’t let their dreams fly, the dream would just die!
Therefore, it is no wonder that so many people have a dream since their childhood. With a nice dream, China succeeded to host the 29th Olympic Games in 2008; with a nice dream, Hong Kong returned to the motherland peacefully in 1997; with a nice dream, Yuan Longping rids the world of hunger; with a nice dream, Michael Jordon becomes the most popular basketball star; with a nice dream I can stand on this stage to compete in the final English speech contest. And with an aim of achieving success, I must do the best!

书面表达
One possible version:
Dreams play an important role in our daily life and a good dream is the motivation to success. To realize a dream, one should learn to defeat difficulties through constant struggles as well as persistence.
It is a dream that enables one to do better in life. Like most classmates, there was a time when I dreamed of being an excellent student in English after entering junior middle school, though my English was very poor then. To catch up with my classmates, I made up my mind to learn English well and made pen-friends with some foreign students so as to practise my spoken English and improve my written English. Although some of my classmates often went to the movies in the evening, seldom did I take part in such activities. Instead, I set aside to concentrate on my English and won the Final English Speech Contest around the city this term, realizing my dream.
At present, I also have another dream. As a Senior 3 student, I hope that I can be admitted to a key university after graduation from middle school. Of course, whether my dream will come true depends largely on my personal efforts. Although life is full of ups and downs, I choose to go forward bravely. I strongly believe that where there is a dream, there is hope and there is a way.
