(24-25八年级下·江苏苏州·阶段练习)What is space tourism
Space tourism is space travel for leisure purposes (休闲目的). What was once only a dream—described in books such as Arthur C. Clarke’s 2001: A Space Odyssey—is now becoming a reality.
Futurologists (未来学家) are scientists who try to predict (预测) what life will be like in the future. After the first man landed on the moon in 1969, they thought that hotels would be built on the moon by the year 2000. Futurologists also considered the possibility that, in the 21st century, families might go for a holiday on the moon. Neither of these predictions have come true yet—but the rapid development of technology may mean these predictions are a possibility in the years to come.
Space Adventure is currently the only company to send people into space. Space Adventures worked with the Federal Space Agency of the Russian Federation and Rocket and Space Corporation Energia to offer flights for the world’s first private space explorers. Each person paid over $20 million for their 10-day trip to the International Space Station.
Following several successful trips into space, more companies are now thinking about the possibility of sending tourists into space. In order to make it cheaper, suborbital (亚轨道的) space travel is a choice for many companies, including Virgin Galactic. Passengers would go to a height of between 100 and 160 km above earth, experience 3—6 minutes of weightlessness and a view of the stars, then come back down to earth. This costs about $200, 000 per person.
While it could be an amazing experience, there are some problems with space tourism. Many people believe that it could make global warming (全球变暖) worse and it is not good for the ozone layer (臭氧层). What’s more, space travel is only really for the rich people. There are still millions of people worldwide who couldn’t pay for it.
1.Which book described space tourism
2.When did the first man land on the moon
3.Do you think space travel will be easy to popularize (普及) in the future Why
(23-24八年级下·江苏南通·阶段练习)If you were born in the 2000s, you are called the oh-ohs. In the 21st century, that would make you young, creative, connected, world-wide, and no doubt smart. Maybe good-looking, too. Right But what do other people think about our generation
Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. They think of you as the “face-down generation” because you use your phone so much. They wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family.
Other adults worry that today’s youth are spoilt (爱) and don’t want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter parents”. They were always there to guide and help their children with a busy program filled with homework and activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports. With parents who do everything for them, today’s youth seem to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
Does the face-down generation need a heads-up Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They seem to be willing to become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to help their communities.
There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to school.
So if you’re one of the oh-ohs, there is reason to be hopeful about the future. Things are looking up for the face-down generation. You are likely to do great and laugh out loud.
1.When were the oh-ohs born
2.Why do some adults think of the oh-ohs as the “face-down generation”
3.How do “helicopter parents” guide and help their children
4.Who does the writer take as an example of brave young people
5.According to the writer, what are the face-down generation likely to do

What will future homes look like A team of architects (建筑师) in Hong Kong say that city homes will be tiny, as population (人口) continues to grow and space becomes more expensive.
They have designed “spaceflats’’ that are just 30 square metres in size. These flats have a living room, a bathroom and a bedroom, as well as a balcony, but everything is carefully planned to make good use of the limited space.
The living room is the main room of the flat. It can be used as an office, a kitchen or even a second bedroom. There is a sofa that can be changed into a bed. The dining table can be changed into a computer desk. Both the sofa and the table can be folded (折叠) away and stored into a small space in the wall. There is a TV, which can also be used as a computer screen. In one corner of the room, a small cooker, a microwave oven and a small fridge are hidden out of sight.
The other rooms are small but practical (实用的). The bathroom has a toilet and a shower. The double bed in the bedroom can also be a sofa, if necessary. The balcony has enough room for two people to sit on and enjoy the view outside.
“Spaceflats” are now being tested in a building in Hong Kong. A resident (居民) said, “The flat is so well designed that you feel that there is plenty of space.”
1.How many rooms does a “spaceflat” have
2.What does the resident think of the “spaceflat”
3.Would you like to live in a “spaceflat” Why or why not
(23-24八年级下·江苏无锡·阶段练习)It was a cold, dry February afternoon. I was in my house with my children. Suddenly, a fire broke out in my autistic (患自闭症的) son’s room. In a few minutes, the fire spread across the living room and then the whole house.
My children and I all got out of the fire without getting hurt. However, we lost all of our possessions (财产), except for the clothes we were wearing. We didn’t even have shoes on. I watched the fire go up through the roof. We lost our home. We had nowhere to live.
Fortunately, we had insurance (保险). But until we could receive some money, we had to live with friends and family and make do with what other people gave us.
The main impact (影响) was on the children. My autistic son really had problems dealing with any changes. He couldn’t even accept the fact of having to wear a new pair of shoes. Yet we had to tell him that he would be living in a whole new house and that all of his clothes and toys were gone.
Thinking about what could have happened, I couldn’t help but feel frightened. I was just thankful that my kids were all alive. Everyone was so nice. People went out of their way to help, not only on the day the fire broke out, but also in the weeks afterwards. Their kindness is the thing that has really stuck in my mind.
1.According to the article, when did the fire break out
2.Where was the author (作者) when the fire broke out
3.What did the author’s family lose in the fire
4.Why couldn’t the author’s autistic son accept the fact of having to wear a new pair of shoes

Rice is life. Rice is at the heart of human civilization (文明). It supports industry, inspires culture and feeds more than half of the world’s population. But the world is still struggling with hunger. The demand for food is far from enough. As the world’s population is about to reach 9.8 billion by 2050, we need to produce 60 percent more food with less land. That is not easy.
We need more rice and better rice. Let’s have a look at what rice is made of. Normally, rice’s flower contains both female and male organs (蕊). That allows it to pollinate itself without the help of bees. Now, imagine there are two types of rice. Rice A is known for high yields (产量). Rice B can fight against stress of weather. Our goal is to create a super Rice C that contains the good advantage of both A and B.That means we need crossbreeding (杂交繁育).
Now we have a hybrid with the high yield quality from A and resistant to stress of weather from B.So the key is to find this kind of rice.
In 1970, Chinese scientist Yuan Longping and his team found “the magic plant”. Three years later, Yuan produced the world’s first hybrid rice-Nan You No. 2. With yields 20 percent above conventional varieties, his creation can feed over 70 million people each year. Today, hybrid rice is planted in more than half of total rice-growing area in China. It allows the country to feed a quarter of the world’s population with 7 percent of the arable (可开垦的) land.
Yuan was later given the title of the “Father of Hybrid Rice”. And the influence of his technology goes beyond the national border. Now, hybrid rice is grown in Asia, America and Africa, even in sand and seashores.
In this case, hybrid rice has served China well and it can also feed a better world.
1.How did rice affect the human civilization
2.What’s the advantage of the super Rice C
3.When did Yuan produce the world’s first hybrid rice-Nan You No. 2
4.Why do we say Yuan’s technology goes beyond the national border
5.What can we learn from the passage (请自拟一句话作答)
(23-24八年级下·江苏南通·期中)It was a very sunny Saturday, and the zoo was crowded with families. Harry Potter’s uncle and aunt bought their son Dudley a large chocolate ice-cream for his birthday. Harry Potter didn’t get it, and no one remembers his 11th birthday was also coming soon.
After lunch they went to the reptile(爬行动物) house. It was cool and dark in here, with glass windows all along the walls. All kinds of lizards(蜥蜴) and snakes were behind the glass window. Dudley quickly found the largest snakes there. It was sleeping now. Dudley stood with his nose pressed against the glass staring at the snake. Dudley ordered his father to make the snake move, but the snake just took his sleep.
“This is boring.” Dudley said. He went away quickly.
Harry Potter moved in front of the window and looked at the snake. He wouldn’t be surprised if the snake had died of boredom—since it had no friends except stupid people trying to disturb it all day long. The snake suddenly opened its big eyes. Slowly, very slowly, it raised its head.
It winked(眨眼). Harry Potter was surprised. No one noticed it. He winked, too. The snake gave Harry Potter a look that said quietly: “I get that all the time.” “I know,” Harry Potter says in a low voice, though he wasn’t sure the snake could hear him. “It must be really annoying.” The snake nodded in agreement.
Then Harry Potter and the snake began to talk...
“DAD! MUM! COME AND LOOK AT THIS SNAKE! YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT IT’S DOING!” Dudley jumped towards the snake as fast as he could.
“Out of the way, you!” he cried, pushing Harry Potter away. Caught by surprise, Harry fell hard on the floor, angrily. Next, no one saw how it happened—one second, Dudley was falling through the glass window as if the window was never there! He was so afraid that he cried loudly. The large snake was moving slowly to the gate. As the snake moved past Harry Potter, he heard a low voice said “Brazil, here I come...Thanks, amigo.”

There once was a king who gave a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture. Hundreds of artists tried. The king looked at all the pictures. But there were only two he really liked, and he had to choose between them.
One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful high mountains all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.
The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged (崎岖的) and bare (光秃秃的). Above was an angry sky, from which rain fell and in which lightning played. Down the side of the mountain was a dangerous waterfall (瀑布).
But when the king looked closely, he saw behind the waterfall a small bush growing in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the middle of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest—in perfect peace.
Which picture do you think won the prize The king chose the second picture. Do you know why
“Because,” explained the king, “peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the middle of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace.”
1.If an artist’s picture was best, what would he get from the king
2.How many pictures did the king read

One day, a baby snail found that he had to carry a big and heavy shell at any time. He was confused, so he went up to his mother and asked, “Why was I born with a shell that grew so hard and heavy ” His mother said, “Because we don’t have bones to hold us up. We can only move slowly, so we need a shell to protect us.”
The baby snail asked again, “The caterpillar has no bones, either, and she can’t move quickly. Why can she live without a shell ” The mother snail answered, “That’s because a caterpillar will become a butterfly. She can fly high into the sky. The sky can protect her.
The baby snail had one more question, “But the earthworm moves like us. He has no bones and he won’t turn into a butterfly. Why doesn’t he carry a hard and heavy shell ” His mother said, “He can dig a hole and hide in the ground, and then the earth can protect him.”
The baby snail then cried, “We are so poor! We have no protection from the sky or from the ground!” His mother smiled at him, “That’s why we have a shell. My dear, imagine that if we don’t have the shells, what will happen to us Hot sun will dry out our bodies and we’ll have nowhere to sleep. What’s more, we’ll die in the heavy rain. Spring is the season when plants start to grow freely from the ground. In China, wild spring greens are very popular as healthy food. They are common (常见的) in many dishes.Chinese toon shoots (香椿芽) Toon shoots are usually the best just before Guyu, the sixth of the 24 solar terms (节气). Guyu means that spring is about to end. I saw a man stretched out on the floor. His hands and feet were tied. There were two men standing over him. One held a lantern, the other held a pistol.
The man on the floor kept begging, “Please, I won’t tell anyone!”
Every time he’d say that, the man with the lantern grinned. “Indeed you aren’t!”
The man with the pistol was ready to shoot, but the other man said, “Wait!” They mumbled a few things, and then headed my way.
I scooted out of there quickly as I could and hid behind some boxes. Then the two men stood talking at the deck rail.
“Let’s just put the loot in our boat and head out,” one man said. “It won’t be long before this steamboat washes back into the river and sinks. When it does, old Jim Turner in there will drown for sure.”
“But suppose it doesn’t wash back out ” the other man said.
“I guess we can wait a bit to see.”
When they headed back in, I lit out. I was covered in a cold sweat.
“Jim,” I whispered, “there is a gang of murderers yonder. We need to find their boat so we can cut in loose. Then they will be stuck here. The sheriff will be able to find them and take them in. We’ve got to hurry. You look on one side, and I will look on the other.”
“And then what, Huck ”

A zero-waste life is a lifestyle that hardly creates any rubbish. So, a zero-waste theme store is about providing people with a number of everyday, practical and pleasant zero-waste products to help them start on a one-stop, zero-waste life journey.
“Zero waste” or “danshari” was first given by a French woman called Bea Johnson. “Live a life and try not to create any rubbish; use different methods to protect the earth.” she said.
Yu Yuan, 27, and her boyfriend have lived in Beijing for many years. And earlier she used to be a customer without thinking a lot until she saw a video about “zero waste”. The video is about a family of four, and the rubbish they produce every year is placed in a jar. After watching the video, Yu wanted to experience this zero-waste lifestyle with her boyfriend.
Yu says that a zero-waste life followed the 6 R principle—Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle and Rot (腐烂).
Over August—October when Yu followed the principle of zero waste 6 R, she and her boyfriend Joe Harvey both produced only two cans of rubbish.
Now, the couple have opened a small shop called The Bulk House in Nanluoguxiang (南锣鼓巷), Beijing, to support a zero-waste life.
At the store they use environmentally friendly products. For example, they use wood products to replace plastic ones and prepare cloth bags printed with zero-waste logos for customers. Most of the products sold in the store can be reused, and a small number of them which are not recyclable can degrade (分解). The store also has secondhand books and audio-visual CD/DVDs.
For used toiletries (洗漱用品) things like soap and toothpaste that are used for cleaning yourself, there is a company which accepts them, and the couple regularly mails their waste to it.
Yu says that those who were once not interested in the zero-waste lifestyle have gradually changed because of curiosity. The zero-waste lifestyle, she adds, is for everyone. “It’s around us at our fingertips.” Yu expects some of her friends to join her on the road to zero waste. As the saying goes, many hands make light work.
1.Who first gave the idea of “Zero waste” or “danshari”
2.Where is the Bulk House
3.What can you do to be environmentally friendly if you have some used toiletries
4.How much rubbish do Bea Johnson and her boyfriend produce after they follow 6 R principle
5.What do you think of a zero-waste life
(23-24八年级下·江苏盐城·期中)During the summer holiday, visiting museums became a new fashion. Tourists were seen queuing for long hours in front of museums and getting entrance tickets became more difficult.
According to media reports, the Henan Museum received more than 12,000 visitors this summer, nearly double that of the same period in 2019. The Hangzhou Museum recorded 12,800 visitors on 16th July, setting a new record.
According to Xinhua News Agency , the “museum fever” can be caused by different factors, including people’s increasing enthusiasm (热情) for traditional Chinese culture, the increasing market for youth educational (教育的) tours and summer camps, and the continuous development of museums. Lin Liugen, the director of the Institute of Archaeology at Zhejiang University, said the “museum craze” shows a deep connection between the public and traditional culture. More people want to have a deeper understanding of China’s rich culture and history.
Summer camps, family trips and educational tours have been the important forms of tourism, with museum visits becoming a must-do activity for travellers. Besides, new technologies (技术) have made cultural relics easier to reach. For example, 3-D projection technology makes the relics come alive before visitors’ eyes. Most foldable (可折叠的) phones today can only fold the screen up and down or left and right. But in the future, phones will be much more flexible (灵活的). In October 2023, Motorola put out a new phone. People can wear it like a bracelet (手环) and bend it into different shapes. Apple is also working on a way to make foldable screens with fewer creases.
Not only will the phones become flexible, but they will also be able to fix themselves. Professor Zhenan Bao from Stanford University made an electronic skin that can fix itself with heat and magnets (磁). This skin acts like human skin, stretching (拉伸) without tearing (撕破). If it is used to make phones, the technology could lead to devices that could fix scratches (划痕) by themselves.
People will also power phones in ways that are different from now. For example, using solar energy. In 2016, Kyocera Corporation from Japan and French company Sun Partner Technologies made a phone with solar panels (电池板) in the screen. It takes only three minutes to charge. But it still needs traditional batteries (电池). In the future, faster and independent solar charging could make solar-powered phones more popular.
1.When did Motorola company put out a new phone
2.How long could the first Motorola phone make calls
3.What can an electronic skin do on a cell phone
4.What will make solar-powered phones more popular in the future

Cats or Dogs! These can be fighting words, depending on who you’re talking to.
Clearly, there are dog people and there are cat people. Dog people prefer (更喜欢) dogs and think they are “man’s best friends”, while cat people like cats because they think cats are elegant and independent. Sometimes the two groups even argue with each other.
Dogs seem to be winning the battle. An Associated Press poll (民意调查) in 2018 showed that people in the US liked dogs more than cats. As much as 74 percent said they liked dogs “a lot” but only 41 percent said the same thing about cats. The 2018 White Paper on China’s Pet Industry also showed that there were around 11 million more dog owners than cat owners in Chinese cities.
However, cats seem to get more attention online. There are even some new slang terms to refer to them. Cats are described as “masters” (喵主子). Even those who don’t have pet cats are doing something called “cloud cat petting” (“云吸猫”), which refers to (指) viewing pictures and videos of cats online.
An article in The Guardian pointed out that dog owners usually go outside to play with their pets or their neighbors’ dogs. But since cats are mainly indoor animals, they are more likely to stay at home. The Internet has become a virtual (虚拟的) “cat park” for cat owners.
But it doesn’t really matter if you prefer cats or dogs. Having a connection with any animal can make us feel good.

【答案】1.It supports industry, inspires culture and feeds more than half of the world’s population. 2.It contains the good advantage of both A and B./ It not only has high yields but also can fight against stress of weather. 3.In 1973. 4.Because hybrid rice is grown in Asia, America and Africa, even in sand and seashores. 5.Hybrid rice has served China well and it could also feed a better world/ Yuan is our hero./We are proud of Yuan.…
