The spring equinox (春分) happens every year in March. The equinox is not a full day. It is a specific time. It depends on the position of the sun. The equinox happens when the sun crosses the equator (赤道). The equator is an imaginary line. It is drawn around the center of the Earth. It divides Earth into two halves, the Northern and Southern Hemispheres (半球).
The spring equinox 2025 happened at 5:01 in the afternoon. At this exact moment, the Northern and Southern hemispheres will receive an equal (相等的) amount of sunshine.
Equinoxes happen only twice a year. One equinox happens in March. The other happens in September. This is the autumnal equinox. It is also known as the fall equinox. It marks the beginning of fall for the Northern Hemisphere.
On an equinox, the length of day and night are approximately (近似) equal. This means the equator experiences about 12 hours of daylight. And it experiences about 12 hours of darkness.
The reason an equinox happens has to do with Earth’s axis. The axis is an invisible (看不见的) line. It runs from the North Pole to the South Pole. The planet spins (旋转) around this axis. Earth makes one complete turn around it each day. That is why every part of Earth’s surface gets both day and night.
Earth’s axis has a tilt (倾斜). That’s why different places on Earth experience different amounts of daylight. But during an equinox, this is not the case. The amount of daylight and darkness are nearly equal.

Sugar painting is made of sugar. It’s the sugar for us to taste, and the painting for us to enjoy.
Since the Warring States Period, people had different ways of making sugar. In the Tang Dynasty, people improved skills of sugar making. So sugar could go into common people’s homes. In the Ming Dynasty, sugar painting first came out. In the Qing Dynasty, sugar painting became popular.
Sugar painting is different from other paintings. Sugar painters use syrup (糖浆) as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth table as the “paper”. To make syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Syrup may become hard if it cools, so the painters have to make the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting is finished.
However, it’s a ________ that this art is dying recently. The sugar painting that used to be rich in shapes has become poorer and poorer because of fewer needs. What’s worse, only a few old sugar painters are willing (愿意) to pass on this kind of art.
For most people, painting is a kind of art and difficult to understand. However, sugar painting has entered people’s daily lives. Through it, we may see the spiritual (精神的) support of people across centuries. Now, sugar painting has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in China. In March 2025, China’s Ministry of Education announced a new rule that all high schools must follow: starting in the fall of 2025, weekends will include two full days off.
Immediately after the news was shared online, it became a hot topic for debate. Those who support the rule point out that high school students often suffer from not getting enough sleep and facing heavy stress. They believe the two-day break will not only allow teachers and students to rest properly but also encourage students to manage their own studies and stay healthy. On the other hand, critics fear that without school guidance, some students might waste their weekends. They also worry that families with more resources can hire tutors (家庭教师) to keep up with studies, while others cannot, leading to unfairness in education.
For students about to enter high school, here are practical ways to make the most of weekends: When it comes to studying, planning is key. A good start is to create a schedule on Friday evening. Saturdays can be used to finish homework and go over lessons, while Sundays should focus on preparing for new topics and improving weaker subjects. To gain more knowledge, students can read classic books for history or science magazines, and take free online courses. Writing down mistakes from the week and figuring out how to correct them is another useful habit.
For relaxation and health, getting 7-8 hours of sleep each night is necessary, and avoiding staying up late just for fun is equally important. Daily exercise, such as 30 minutes of jumping rope, keeps the body strong, and weekends offer time for team sports like basketball. Spending 2-3 hours each week on creative activities like music, drawing, or crafts can also sharpen focus and creativity. Life skills matter too. Helping at home by making shopping lists and managing money builds responsibility. Outside of school, joining volunteer work or trying out jobs related to future interests once a month adds real-world experience.
True fairness in education isn’t about rules — it’s about learning to plan your time wisely. Mastering this skill will pave the way for success both today and tomorrow.
