(2024·广西·中考真题)Have you ever imagined what bees can do with their tiny brains Now scientists are looking into a bee’s brain.
Clint Perry, a scientist, has spent much time studying how bees think. He says studying bees is not very different from studying other animals. “The main difficulty is to design (设计) an experiment (实验) bee and get what we want,” he says. “With humans, we can ask them a question and get an answer. But we can’t use the same way to get an answer from bees. They are just trying to get sugar. Bees like sugar.”
The fact that bees like sugar is helpful for scientists to design experiments. For example, in one experiment, Perry gave bees a task: to find delicious sugar on a landing place above a black bar (棒). Perry made the task easier or harder by moving the landing place farther from or closer to the black bar. He found that bees would avoid the task when it was difficult. And when the task was easy, bees would try it.
As for humans, we might choose not to take a test when we weren’t ready for it. And we might choose to take the test when we were well prepared. In the same way, bees seemed to make decisions like humans.
Perry points out that we are not sure whether bees actually make a thoughtful choice from experiments. Now scientists still do not know how bees manage to do so much with their tiny brains. But learning more about how bees’ brains work could help us learn more about how our own brains deal with information.

(2025·广西贵港·一模)Ants have the ability to smell out cancerous cells (癌细胞) in humans, which has been discovered by a new study, suggesting that they could be used to find cancer in the future. Researchers from the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) discovered that some ants have a well-developed sense of smell. “However, more tests must be carried out before they could be used in hospitals,” the team said.
The scientists did tests with 36 ants smelling cells in the lab. First, they let the ants smell some cancerous human cells. Every time the ants smelt cancerous cells, they were given with sugar. In the second step, the ants were put into two different smells. One was a new smell of healthy cells and the second was still the smell of the cancerous cells. Once the ants found the cancerous cells successfully, the researchers made them smell different cancerous cells. As such, the scientists found that ants could discriminate between cancerous and healthy cells and between two cancerous cells.
This isn’t the first time that scientists have used the animals’ sense of smell to find cancerous cells.
“Dogs are good at finding something with their noses. However, training dogs to do so requires several months to a year. On the other hand, insects can be easily raised, they are inexpensive, and hundreds of them can be trained with fewer times,” the researchers pointed out.
“This study shows that ants are able to learn very quickly. The method can be used for other tasks including finding danger or other diseases (疾病),” the researchers said.

(2025·广西来宾·一模)The Taklimakan Desert (塔克拉玛干沙漠), which is in the northwest part of China, is the biggest desert in our country. It has been a big worry because it’s really large, about 337, 600 square kilometers and there are a lot of sandstorms that come from it. These sandstorms are very bad for the nature and the way people live around it. So, people started a big project to put a green belt (带) around the desert.
By the end of 2023, a large part of a 2,761-kilometer-long green belt had already been made around the desert. In 2024, the last 285 kilometers, mostly in the south of the desert where the sandstorms are super bad, were finished. Now the whole Taklimakan Desert has a green belt all around it. This Project has to do with six counties (县) in three parts of Xinjiang.
The building of this green belt used many different scientific ways. For example, the China Railway Construction Development Group (中铁建发展集团) made ingredients of the sand-stopping system to stop the sand. This system has three main things. There are tall things to stop the sand, squares made of straw (草方格) and wide lines of trees. These things work together well to stop the desert from getting bigger.
China’s largest desert fully encircled (环绕) with green belt. When the green belt around the desert was successfully finished, it brought a lot of good things. First, it made the nature around the desert better. There are fewer and not as strong sandstorms now. Second, it kept the farming near the desert safe. Also, the places where people live in cities and in the countryside are nicer. Because there are fewer sandstorms, there is less harm to the things like roads and buildings, and more people come to visit. So, the local people can make more money from having visitors. What type of shark is the slowest The slowest shark in the world is the Greenland shark. It lives in very cold waters near the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋) and the North Atlantic Ocean (北大西洋). In these icy waters, the Greenland shark swims only about one mile per hour. That is slower than many human swimmers! The fastest shark, the short fin mako shark, can swim up to 45 miles per hour.
Why is the Greenland shark so slow Scientists think that it all has to do with their cold water home. When fish are in cold water, their bodies slow down. Their bodies become cold and their muscles (肌肉) cannot work as well. They cannot move as fast as they can in warm water. Human beings do not experience this because our bodies stay warm even in cold weather.
The Greenland shark is also the one that lives the longest. In fact, Greenland sharks don’t even become full adults until they are about 150 years old! Scientists have learned that they live about 500 years.
How can Greenland sharks live so long These sharks eat small amounts (数量) of food for their size. A Greenland shark weighing 500 pounds would need less than 7 ounces (盎司) every day! That is less than half a pound of food. They need small amounts of food because they use up energy very slowly. The way we use up energy from food is called metabolism (新陈代谢) . Greenland sharks have a very slow metabolism. Animals with slow metabolisms usually live longer.

①Lam Hon-ming, a talented teacher at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, is top in soybean (大豆) research. Since 1998, Lam’s team has been working with scientists in Chinese mainland. He came across Zhang Guodong at a national soybean meeting, who is also excellent in agriculture (农业). Zhang is from Gansu, China. With the same interest, they decided to improve farmers’ lives.
②Farmers in Gansu depend largely on the weather for their living, mainly on rainfall. Because of this, many people live with poorness in the area. In 2016, they developed three new kinds of soybeans for salty land and dry weather of Northwest China. All the three kinds of soybeans were invented by the two scientists.
③As the land in Northwest China is not suitable for the growth of common kinds of soybeans, local farmers never planted them, and it became a main problem for spreading the three new soybean kinds. Lam and Zhang communicated with the farmers through different ways.
④By 2020, the planting area of the soybeans in Gansu had been more than 2. 4 million square kilometers. The production of soybeans had reached 7. 71 million kilograms, adding about 30 million yuan to local farmers’ income. Zhang said that Professor Lam’s work has cut the poorness down and improved agricultural research in Northwest China. “It is hard to keep doing agricultural research in poor areas. (2025·广西柳州·一模)Based on the movement of the sun, ancient Chinese people invented 24 Solar terms (节气), each lasting around two weeks. Among them, “Rain Water” is the second term, falling around February 18th or 20th. When “Rain Water” arrives, it brings life to all things. Light rain begins to feed the earth; waking up everything from its winter sleep. The ground temperature gradually rises as the rain falls, and the weather becomes quite wet in the following days.
This is a wonderful time for nature. Birds migrate (迁徙) back to the north, ducks float on the water, and plants grow new buds (发芽). The seasonal calendar acts as a calendar for farmers, guiding them on when to plant seeds (种子) for the best harvest (收获). After a cold and dark winter, “Ram-Water” tells the farmers that it’s the perfect time to start planting.
There’s a beautiful poem by the famous Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu that perfectly describe the “Rain Water”
Happy Rain on a Spring Night
Good rain knows its time right, O’er wild lanes dark cloud spreads, It will fall when comes spring. In boat a lantern looms. With wind it steals in night, Dawn sees saturated reds; Mute, it moistens each thing. The town’s heavy with blooms.
In this poem, Du Fu describes that the spring rain knows exactly when to fall. It comes silently at night, making everything wet without a sound. The open fields are covered in dark clouds, and only a lantern on a boat can be seen in the distance. When dawn (黎明) comes, the flowers are so wet and heavy with raindrops that the whole town seems to be blooming (开花) with beauty.
Through this poem, Du Fu expresses his deep love and admiration (钦佩) for the spring rain that brings life and hope to the earth. (2025·广西南宁·一模)①Do people need to hibernate (冬眠) like some animals on cold days “If you feel like sleeping more in winter, you are not alone,” said Dr. Raj Dasgupta. To support himself, he mentioned a study that found at least a third of American adults sleep more in winter.
②Another study done at a hospital in Berlin may help you find out the answer. 188 patients in the study slept about an hour longer in winter, with 30 more minutes of rapid eye movement (REM). REM is a period of sleep where we dream more and our breathing speeds up. “REM helps us remember things and stay happy, and keeps us healthy,” said Dasgupta.
③The need for more sleep in winter may have to do with how light fluctuates. “Our bodies use sunlight to set our sleep clocks. When it’s bright outside, we are usually active. But when the sun goes down, we may feel tired,” Dasgupta said. “Less sunlight on cold days causes an increase in melatonin (褪黑素) produced by our bodies, which makes us feel sleepy.” Because of more production of melatonin, people naturally think a healthy person needs more sleep in winter.
④However, that doesn’t mean humans really need hibernation. “We just need to have a better rest from busy social work in winter, by getting more sunlight in the morning and going to bed and waking up at the same time every day,” said another researcher, Dr. Carleara Weiss.

②Why are people hungry According to scientific research, the food we eat is changed into glucose (葡萄糖) for energy. Our bodies are like smart machines that can feel how much glucose there is in the blood. When the glucose level drops, a person starts to feel hungry. It’s important to note that hunger is not caused by the amount of food left in the stomach but by the changes in glucose levels.
③When we have been hungry for a long time, why aren’t we hungry In fact, the human body stores extra sugar. When we can’t eat for some reasons, our body will cleverly change the stored sugar into energy. When it arrives at a certain stage, our body will give us a message: glucose is enough. So we don’t feel hungry anymore.
④Is it OK not to eat when you’ve been hungry for a long time No. It is harmful to the human body. When the stored energy is used up, the body breaks down fat to provide itself with energy. During this process, the person will feel dizzy (眩晕的). If worse, the protein (蛋白质) which is very important to the body also starts to break down and we are in danger. If the worst, we may lose our lives.
⑤In short, hunger feelings should be cared. For busy people, always take some candies with you. If you have been hungry for too long, you mustn’t give up eating! Start with a piece of candy or some soup.

Steven Orfield is the founder of an American acoustics (音响效果) test lab. He said, “When it’s quiet, ears will adapt. The quieter the room, the more things you hear. You’ll hear your heart beating, sometimes you can hear your lungs, or hear your stomach gurgling (咕咕作响) loudly.”
According to Orfield, if someone is asked to sit in such a quiet room in the dark, the longest time he or she can bear is 45 minutes. So, you can forget about having a good night’s sleep in this room and get back to your normal 30-decibel room instead.

(2025·广西崇左·一模)A new rubbish sorting system (垃圾分类系统) has been put into use in Fangchengyuan Community in Beijing. Local people not only sort their rubbish, but also put QR codes (二维码) on it.
“When the rubbish is collected and the codes are seen, I will get reward points to exchange for small gifts and even some money,” one of the local people told reporters. “It’s really creative and encouraging.”
This smart system has been carried out in 350 communities in Beijing. The capital of China has joined a list of cities in the country that take action to support rubbish sorting. For example, Shenzhen and Shanghai have made laws to punish people and organizations for not sorting rubbish correctly.
China produces quite a lot of rubbish every year. Much of the rubbish is buried (填埋) in soil or burned without being sorted. Landfills (填埋场) take up a lot of land and have a risk of polluting the soil and water nearby. And burning rubbish can produce harmful gases. Through rubbish sorting, we can reduce the use of landfills and air pollution.
What’s more, rubbish sorting saves resources, which could bring economic benefits (经济利益). For example, a ton of waste paper can be reused to make about 850 kg of paper, saving 17 trees and 50 percent of water. Because of their benefits, some countries have developed successful sorting systems.

(2025·广西崇左·一模)Nowadays, more and more people like to travel in their holidays. The other day I read a report about the ways people spend their holidays. It is reported that in recent years several new holiday habits have developed. Among them, the most interesting one is the growth of holiday camps.
From the report we can see that in 2015, 40% of people stayed at home for holidays. But now the percentage has fallen to 25%. More people go out for fun. People enjoy the fresh air, clean water and green hills when they go camping in the places far from the city. In 2015, 38% of people spent their holidays visiting their relatives. Now that number has increased to 43%. People always enjoy staying with their relatives for a few days during the holidays. It is very interesting to note that the number of people who go abroad for holidays is increasing fast. In 2015, only 10% of people went to other countries for holidays. But in 2020, it has increased to 15%. And the number will probably keep rising in the following years.

②It may take a long time to bring a wildfire under control. And some wildfires are unstoppable. They usually happen in areas where few people live. They are most common in wooded areas in the US, Canada and Australia. They are also known as forest fires or grass fires, or as bush fires in Australia.
③Lightnings and volcanoes (火山) can cause wildfires. However, 90 percent of wildfires are caused by humans, according to the US National Park Service. Burning campfires and rubbish, cigarette butts (烟头) and acts of arson can easily cause wildfires. Dry and hot weather, as well as winds, creates perfect wildfire conditions. They help wildfires grow quickly and last for weeks.
④Wildfires can burn at 900℃ and reach heights of more than 50 meters. It can move at speeds of up to 23 kilometers an hour, burning everything like trees, brush, homes and even people. The fires are also dangerous to animals because they have no place to hide. They have to leave their trees and find water somewhere else.
⑤Fires have burned on Earth throughout its history. But rising temperatures from human activities make wildfires more and more frequent (频繁的). Many cities have suffered a lot from wildfires. These have already developed into a global event, rather than just wildfires happening in California, the scientists warn.

This project shows how much China wants to stop the desert from getting worse and make the nature better.

He sees the rain as a gentle and kind force that nurtures (养育) and cares for all living things. Just like the rain, he hopes that life can be gentle, beautiful, and full of new beginnings for everyone.

Sound is measured by decibels (分贝). The sound of breathing is 10 decibels. The Microsoft room, however, measures -20.6 decibels, according to Business Insider news website. The famous computer technology company uses the room for audio (音响) and device (设备) testing.
However, if you think you can sleep much better in this room, you are wrong. Usually, a room in which most people can fall asleep measures 30 decibels.
