Almost every kid has the experience of losing a treasured belonging. So does 8-year-old Maya Zrihen. But what she did afterwards really sets her apart.
Maya has been collecting Junior Ranger badges(小护林员徽章)on family trips to national parks.“National parks are very beautiful, and I want to protect them,so that's why I'm a Junior Ranger,” she said.
When the family first learned about the Junior Ranger program, they decided to take full advantage of it.Maya's mother believed that there are things children cannot learn from a textbook, but they can learn hands-on in the parks. So on holidays or at weekends, the family took Maya to different parks to complete various educational activities and earned badges.“In Washington,D.C.,I visited all the monuments that we can get badges from,” Maya said proudly to others.
In order to make Maya look like a real ranger, her mother purchased a hat for her to wear.Maya displays the badges she got on the hat while visiting parks. She is very proud of being part of this program. She also takes it upon herself to educate her friends about what she is learning in the parks and promises to care for them.
Last month,Maya and her family went to Dry Tortugas,a heavily visited national park in Florida.Maya was very excited to go there because it was the park she had always dreamed of visiting. In the park Maya picked up litter, planted trees and put up posters to call on visitors to protect wild animals. At the end of the day,Maya finished all the tasks and got a fancy badge from a park ranger. She considered this badge her favourite one so she put it on the most outstanding place of the hat. Then Maya and other junior rangers played happily in the woods of the park for a while.
The family were about to leave when Maya found her favourite badge lost.Anxious and nervous, she quickly rushed back to the woods, trying to find her badge.

In England, when the eighth graders leave the middle school, they are often worried about moving to the high school. It is a hard time for them, but it can be an exciting one as well.To make it easier, students need to get familiar with their school.
Even though they've done this already in the middle school,it's still important to find where their classrooms are. Most schools take students to the high school for a visit at the end of their eighth grade year. And,most schools also have a freshman (新生)speech for parents and students before the first year begins.Sometimes the main office will give away a map of the school. This can help students and parents to find different places in the school.
One way to know your high school more and make new friends is to join a club or play a sport.Schools often offer chances to join different clubs and sports.Fall activities begin in August before the first day of school. If you are not interested in sports, there are clubs for any interest, such as drama, dance, chess, photography, community service. These clubs allow students from different grades.By joining an activity, students can find new friendships, not to mention improving their chances in future college applications (申请).The school office will have a list of activities offered at the school and information on how to join them.
What's more,to have a great start to a high school year, students can write down some of their worries, and ask for help from teachers and school workers.

Our teenagers are lonely.A new study by Harvard's Making Caring Common (MCC) shows just how that feeling has been common and become serious during the past year when we had to keep the social distance. One year's online learning and life in the bedrooms rather than the classrooms or dorm (宿舍) rooms can make teenagers feel lonelier than before.Teenagers have been more likely to be influenced by loneliness than older adults.
Experiencing loneliness is certainly sad,and it is also dangerous.Researchers found that 63% of the young were suffering from bad sleep, anxiety, and poor health during the lockdown (封闭) and that nearly a quarter had started or increased some bad habits, including smoking, drinking and staying up late to deal with their feelings.
About half of the young people in the study, who said they had felt lonely, explained that over the past weeks not one person had taken more than just a few minutes to ask how they had been lately. It made them feel they had no one who really cared about them.Their parents thought they had much free time after lessons and it seemed that they only worried about whether their children could perform their schoolwork at the level they once did. They didn't know the problem.
Sian Leah Beilock, the president of Barnard College, explains that young people depend on social media, which makes them especially weak to social media's harm. She also suggests that fewer close friends may explain some of the feelings of loneliness. She reports that in 1986 the average American had three close friends with whom they could share important things about their lives. In 2005,that number had dropped to just two friends. And in 2020,one in five millennials (千禧一代) had no friends at all.
These levels of loneliness are heartbreaking.MCC suggests,as a nation,we first should focus on teaching the young to make meaningful connections between people and support them.
