When 15-year-old Alex was in middle school, he witnessed his best friend, Lily, struggling with a rather
serious learning disability. Lily had great difficulty in reading and understanding complex texts, which greatly
affected her academic performance and greatly harmed her self-confidence. Alex firmly decided to find a way to
help her.
One day, while carelessly reading Reader’s Digest, Alex chanced upon an article about the shocking power of
artificial intelligence (AI) in education. Deeply inspired by the article, he made up his mind to create an AI-based
learning tool that could effectively help students like Lily. Alex spent months learning programming languages and
algorithms (算法). He faced numerous tough challenges along the way, such as checking and reorganizing codes
(代码), which mean programming instructions, and searching for relevant data, which mean information having
something to do with developing such an app. However, he never thought of giving up. Finally, he developed an
第 4页/共 12页
app called “ReadEase”, which uses AI to analyze texts and provide simplified explanations, synonyms, and clear
audio-readings. It can also track the user’s progress and offer personalized learning plans.
When Alex introduced “ReadEase” to Lily, she was doubtful at first. “But to my surprise, after using it for a
few weeks, I noticed a significant improvement in my reading skills. I can finally understand what I’m reading,”
Lily said excitedly.
The success of “ReadEase” didn’t stop there. Alex shared his invention with his school’s teachers, who were
deeply impressed by its huge potential. They started using the app in their classes to help students with learning
difficulties. Now, Alex is working on improving “ReadEase” and hopes to make it available to more students
around the world. “I want to use technology to make a positive impact on people’s lives,” he said with great
enthusiasm.
4. Why did Alex decide to create “ReadEase”
A. To win a science fair. B. To help his close friend.
C. To finish a school project. D. To show his knowledge about AI.
5. What challenge did Alex meet while creating the app
A. Figuring out suitable programming languages. B. Coding programming instructions properly.
C. Finding similar examples to follow. D. Lacking time and money.
6. What can we infer from Lily’s words
A. She is not used to the app. B. She still has difficulty reading.
C. The app is of great help to her. D. The app doesn’t function well.
7. Which of the following best describes Alex according to the text
A. Creative and determined. B. Out-going and generous.
C. Humorous and earnest. D. Cool-headed and responsible.

The mental health benefits of being exposed (暴露) to nature have long been recognized, whether through
activities like listening to birdsong or taking a walk in the park.
A study published recently shows that even half an hour of bird-watching could make us happier, healthier and
help strengthen a deeper connection with nature. We already know that listening to birds throughout the day
positively impacts our well-being. Even hearing birds indoors through an open window can boost our mental state,
even though in the short term.
The study suggests that not only can bird-watching offer even more benefits than just listening to birdsong, but
第 5页/共 12页
it’s also more effective at increasing well-being and reducing stress than going on a nature walk. So why is
bird-watching so good for us It satisfies our biophilia, the thought that humans have a natural preference for nature
— some might even say we should consider ourselves as part of nature — which is why being in natural
environments makes us feel better.
Bird-watching can enhance positive feelings — the basis of well-being. Research shows that being aware of
our feelings affects well-being more positively. For example, a study asked participants to either count how many
birds they had seen, or rate their joy upon seeing each bird species, and both groups reported well-being boosts.
However, the joyful group experienced the most improvement, suggesting that participants’ attention to positive
feelings while bird-watching may have promoted the activity’s benefits. But bird-watching can be more than just
joyful. Research suggests that experiencing awe (敬畏) of nature can be life-changing for human well-being.
“Noticing” is a key aspect of awe. It means that our full attention is on the birds rather than ourselves. Being in
nature and noticing wildlife requires us to completely get lost in the activity, which can improve mental and
physical health.
So, grab your binoculars (双筒望远镜) and step into nature for a lift in well-being. Take on the journey and
enjoy every moment.
8. What can a short-term exposure to birdsong do
A. It can change people’s view on nature.
B. It can prepare people for further bird-watching.
C. It can contribute to improving people’s mental state.
D. It can improve people’s physical health significantly.
9. What does the underlined word “biophilia” in paragraph 3 mean
A. The love for the natural world. B. The tiredness of being in nature.
C. A kind of medicine made from plants. D. A preference for birds that can sing sweetly.
10. What is the key factor in experiencing awe while bird-watching
A. Counting the number of birds. B. Spending a long time in nature.
C. Using high-quality binoculars. D. Concentrating on the birds instead of oneself.
11. Which of the following would be the best title for the text
A. Bird-Watching: A Path to Enhanced Well-Being B. The Preparations for Going Bird-Watching
C. The Methods to Improve Your Mental Health D. Bird-Watching: A Way to Connect with Nature
D

A recent study of nearly 13 million health records has showed a significant improvement in children’s tooth
health in the UK. Since the introduction of the sugar tax (税) in 2018, there has been a 12% decrease in the number
of children requiring tooth removals (拔牙). This translates to nearly 5,638 fewer cases each year. This
improvement has led to calls for broadening the tax to include other high-sugar products, a move strongly
supported by the British Dental Association (BDA).
The sugar tax, originally designed to fight obesity (肥胖), appears to have had an unexpected yet positive
impact on children’s tooth health. The policy seems to have led to a reduction in the intake of sugar-sweetened
drinks among the younger population, which account for about 30% of the added sugars in the diets of children
aged one to three, and over half for older teens aged from 13 to 16. The drop in tooth decay (蛀牙) that followed
has saved more than 5,500 hospital admissions for tooth removals with the most significant reductions observed
among children aged between five and nine.
Despite the success of the sugar tax in reducing tooth removals, the BDA believes there is still room for
further improvement. It suggests that the tax should also be put on other sugar-laden products like milk-based
drinks, biscuits, cakes, sweets, yoghurts, and cereals. Eddie Crouch, from the BDA, expressed his support for the
tax, stating that it is “delivering the goods in the fight against tooth decay.”
The research shows the potential of more effective public health policies in improving child tooth health. The
introduction of the sugar tax, which encouraged producers to lower the sugar content in soft drinks, has proved a
direct relationship between policy application and significant health improvements. The study’s findings serve as a
strong argument for the spread of the tax to other sugary products, with the potential to further reduce tooth decay
and associated hospital admissions among children.
12. What can be inferred about the sugar tax
A. It has solved the problem of childhood obesity. B. It has been well received by drink producers.
C. It has seen a result beyond expectations. D. It has been placed on all sugary foods in the UK.
13. Who showed the most significant drop in tooth removal
A. Parents with little kids. B. Children aged from one to three.
C. Children aged between five and nine. D. Teenagers aged between thirteen and sixteen.
14. What is Eddie Crouch’s attitude towards the sugar tax
A. Mixed. B. Uncaring. C. Doubtful. D. Positive.
15. What is the main idea of the text
A. Sugar tax for obesity. B. Tax’s impact on tooth health.

C. BDA’s new tax push. D. Drop in sweet drink sales.

Sarah and Mia’s friendship blossomed the moment they met each other in the school art club. Their friendship
was a beautiful combination of creativity and understanding. They spent countless hours together, painting,
drawing, and sharing their dreams of becoming famous artists one day.
However, a school-wide art exhibition (展览) was approaching, threatening to put their friendship to a tough
test. This exhibition was no ordinary event. It was a grand showcase, and the winning artworks would be exhibited
at the well-known local art gallery for an entire month. Given their extraordinary talent, both Sarah and Mia were
determined to win.
As the preparations for the exhibition began, they started to drift apart (渐行渐远). Sarah began to notice that
Mia was becoming increasingly secretive. Mia would lock herself in her room for hours on end, leaving Sarah in
the dark about her creative process. Whenever Sarah asked to see her work in progress, Mia would find an excuse
to refuse. This behavior left Sarah feeling deeply hurt. She had always been an open book with Mia, sharing every
sketch, every raw idea, believing that their friendship was based on trust and openness.
On the day of handing in the artworks, the tension reached its peak (顶峰). Sarah met Mia in the art room.
“Why have you been acting so strange We used to share everything, but now you’re shutting me out!” Sarah
exclaimed, her voice filled with hurt. Mia looked away, avoiding Sarah’s eyes. “I just ... I want to win this so badly.
I thought if I worked alone, I’d have a better chance, ” she mumbled. Just then, the art teacher walked in, ready to
