My initial exploration of the world of comic books happened through the comic strips (连环漫画) in newspapers. It began with a fondness for Garfield and his adventures, and led to the discovery of a range of comic books like Champak, Tintin, and Archie. They enabled me to enjoy myself in a world without iPads and the Internet — just like so many of my friends who were fond of reading.
While my access to comics as a child was limited to what was printed in the newspaper, this changed once I grew older and started visiting bookstores to buy the books that I wanted to read. Having grown up on a diet of image-heavy books, I found the idea of reading text-only novels quite formidable. As I searched for books that lay somewhere in between, I came across a copy of Bhimayana — a graphic novel (漫画小说). It felt familiar due to its comic-like theme and design. Plus, understanding complex narratives through pictures was relatively easier and more fun. And so, as I grew older, I found myself changing towards graphic novels from childish comic books.
Graphic novels dealt with serious topics in a more interesting manner. They would truly show me what was going on. For example, when I was reading Joe Sacco’s Palestine, I did not have to imagine the ruin caused by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I could actually see it while reading about it.
Fast-forward a few years to when I was given a copy of Jonathan Bloomfield’s Palestine: A Novel. Though I was impressed by the compelling (扣人心弦的) nature of storytelling in his book, I am not sure if I would have been able to visualise and enjoy his text-only version so much had I not read Sacco’s Palestine first. Thanks to the graphic novel, I had a “picture” of whatever had happened, and that made it easier and more fun to understand the details of the overall story.
From black and white strips and colourful comic books to illustrated graphic novels, this type of storytelling has come a long way. While my romance with comic books is still ongoing, in the long run, my love for graphic novels is stronger and here to stay.
24.Why did the author turn to comic books as a child
A.He found comic books interesting. B.He had limited access to other books.
C.He wanted to be accepted by his friends. D.He had difficulty reading text-only books.
25.Which word can best explain the underlined word “formidable” in paragraph 2
A.Acceptable. B.Natural. C.Appealing. D.Scary.
26.What does the author say about reading Sacco’s Palestine
A.It encouraged him to read more text-only novels.
B.It introduced him to a compelling style of storytelling.
C.It helped improve his understanding of Bloomfield’s book.
D.It changed his attitude towards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
27.What could be the best title for the text
A.How picture books shaped my life B.Why I love reading graphic novels
C.What made comic books special to me D.Why I turned to serious novels eventually
Scientists say there has been a major drop in the population of leatherback sea turtles (乌龟) off the U.S. West Coast.
One recent study found a 5.6 percent yearly decrease in the population. Leatherbacks are massive sea turtles dating back to the time of the dinosaurs. The animals can grow up to 1.5 meters in length and weigh as much as 680 kilograms.
The leatherback sea turtles found along the U.S. Pacific Coast are actually born thousands of kilometers away, on beaches in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. The animals migrate (迁徙) 11,000 kilometers across the Pacific Ocean to mainly feed on jellyfish in waters off the U.S. West Coast. Then, they swim back.
Scott Benson is an ecologist with the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries. “There are birds that go farther, but they fly. There’s a whale shark that might swim a little further, but it doesn’t have to come up for air,” he said.
Scientists say that if nothing changes, the leatherbacks could completely disappear from the U.S. West Coast within 30 years. The population drops are mainly blamed on international fishing activities, the destruction (破坏) of nesting grounds and climate change.
The animals can be killed when they get trapped in fishing equipment. Scientists say the population is also harmed because a lot of turtle eggs are removed from beaches.
Researchers say that while all the world’s leatherbacks are under pressure, the group that migrates for months across the Pacific faces the greatest threats.
NOAA launched an aggressive plan to save leatherbacks in 2015 and is set to release a new action plan this month. The plan is meant to persuade governments and international organizations to join efforts to save the turtles.
28.Which word best describes the present situation of the leatherbacks
A.Promising. B.Worrying. C.Complex. D.Unstable.
29.What do the leatherbacks mainly survive on
A.Sea weed. B.Other turtles’ eggs. C.Little sharks. D.Jellyfish.
30.Which period is the most dangerous for leatherbacks
A.The period of migration. B.The period of fishing activities.
C.The period of being on a beach. D.The period of laying eggs.
31.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A.Entertainment. B.Health. C.Nature. D.Education.
Students who are better able to understand and manage their emotions effectively, a skill known as emotional intelligence (EI), do better at school than their less-skilled classmates, according to research published by the American Psychological Association.
“It’s not enough to be smart and hardworking. Students must also be able to understand and manage their emotions to succeed at school,” said Carolyn MacCann, lead author of the study. MacCann and her colleagues analyzed data from more than 160 studies, representing more than 42,000 students from 27 countries, published between 1998 and 2019. The students ranged in age from primary school to college. The researchers found that students with higher EI tended to get higher grades and better achievement test scores than those with lower EI scores. This finding held true even when controlling for intelligence and personality factors. What was most surprising to the researchers was the association held despite different ages.
As for why EI can affect academic performance, MacCann believes a number of factors may come into play. “Students with higher EI may be better able to manage negative emotions, such as anxiety, boredom and disappointment, which can negatively affect academic performance,” she said. “Also, these students may be better able to manage the social world around them, forming better relationships with teachers, classmates and family, all of which are important to academic success.” Finally, the skills required for EI, such as understanding human motivation and emotion, may overlap with (与……重叠) the skills required to master certain subjects, such as history and language, giving students an advantage in those subject areas, according to MacCann.
However, MacCann cautions against widespread testing of students to identify and target those with low EI as it may stigmatize (给……打上烙印) those students. Instead, she recommends interventions that involve the whole school, including additional teacher training and a focus on teacher well-being and emotional skills. “Programs that integrate emotional skill development into the existing curriculum would be beneficial, as research suggests that training works better when run by teachers rather than external specialists,” she said. “Increasing skills for everyone — not just those with low EI—would benefit everyone.”
32.What surprised the researchers most during MacCann’s study
A.Intelligence mattered more than EI for academic success.
B.EI had an effect on learning for students of all ages.
C.College students benefited more from EI than pupils.
D.Personality affected academic performance greatly.
33.What can be a reason for the conclusion of MacCann’s study
A.High-EI students hardly experience negative emotions.
B.High-EI students seldom develop social relationships.
C.High-EI students tend to easily focus on their study.
D.High-EI students have helpful skills for certain subjects.
34.What does MacCann suggest in the last paragraph
A.Equipping teachers with emotional skills.
B.Designing tests to identify students with low EI.
C.Developing special programs for students with low EI.
D.Employing emotional specialists to give training to students.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Should EI be taught in school
B.How can students develop high EI
C.Students with high EI do better in school
D.Good students do better in managing emotions
The Decluttering Philosophy That Keeps Your Home Organized
When you sit at your desk, you may constantly be confronted by chaos. 36 Here an expert shares about some useful strategies to keep our messes at bay and her decluttering philosophy — getting rid of unnecessary possessions and distractions.
37 “What becomes clutter and where your clutter collects can say a lot about what’s going on with you.” Thus the first thing you should keep in mind is to understand your clutter. When you understand the reasons behind your clutter, it’s a lot easier to know what to keep and what to get rid of.
When it comes to organizing, don’t bite off more than you can chew. If you start off with too big a goal, you might get discouraged if the job takes too long. 38 Instead, start with something less challenging. You can also work within short time restrictions. All in all, setting realistic goals and breaking tasks up into manageable portions can really help.
Once you’ve chosen an area to declutter, make a list of everything you have in that space. Then comes the hardest part: figuring out what to get rid of. At this stage, please look at your items with neutral eyes. 39
Admittedly, it’s easy to be organized the day after decluttering, when tidiness is still top of mind. But what happens when you come home from a trip and are too tired to unpack your luggage Or when you get the flu and are too sick to clean up 40 In other words, make a system that works for you even when you’ve got to work or when you’ve got a cold.
A.Everyone’s clutter tells a personal story.
B.So don’t restore your entire garage in one afternoon.
C.The key is to create practices that can be easily maintained.
D.It can help you let go of things you don’t need but feel attached.
E.Comparatively speaking, the job taking shorter time will be easier to finish.
F.At this time you may wonder how to clean up your space and keep it that way.
G.If you are worried about these situations, you can delay your decluttering schedule.

五、书面表达
57.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Brrrring! The bell rang as I tapped out a quick beat on my desk. I’ve figured it out, finally! I couldn’t wait to play it for my neighbor Mia.
Mia and I had been working for weeks on a song for Saturday’s band competition but we had been stuck on the ending.
I waved when I saw a familiar face jogging toward me down the hall.
“Hey, Will!” Liam grinned. “Ready for some training after school I’ve been working on my jumper.” He turned around and shot an imaginary ball into the air.
Uh-oh. I’d forgotten all about basketball. I didn’t want to fail Liam, but I was dying to try out the new ending.
Maybe if I had a reason to skip…
“Hey, Liam. I don’t feel so great.” I gave a small cough for effect. “Another time ” “Sure, no problem. Feel better soon, OK ” Then Liam left immediately.
Lying was easier than I imagined. I could finish the song and Liam's feelings weren’t hurt.
After playing the ending, I looked at Mia hopefully, “What do you think ” “Perfect!” She exclaimed in delight.
“That sounded great, guys.” Liam stood on my basement steps with his eyebrows raised.
Oh, no. Busted. “Thanks,” I said, trying to think quickly. “It was strange. I came home and suddenly felt fine. I would have met you at the court, but it was too late. And then Mia stopped by, and —”
“But, in fact, you called me,” Mia said, shaking her head.
“I had intended to call to ask a homework question, and then…” My voice trailed off (逐渐减弱). I coughed, but it sounded fake. “I can’t remember how it went exactly, but I’m feeling better now.”
“Well, that’s good, I guess.” Liam forced a smile.
Before I could think of something to say, Liam tossed (扔) a case of a movie intended to comfort me onto the couch, Captain Crush, Part 2, the sequel to our favorite movie in which an evil villain’s little lie turned into a big mess, and left with eyes filled with disappointment, followed by Mia.

The bell will ring at 9: 55 a. m., which means you’ll have five minutes to get out of the classrooms, library, or cafeteria and into the parking lot in front of the school. The top two classes that organize the most quickly and neatly will be awarded our safety prize. At 2: 00 p. m., before the end of the school day, Headmaster Jones will announce the winners of the recent charity competition. Over 100 students, including myself, have participated in gathering donations and funding from people and businesses in the community to help our school. We’ve all seen this school suffer from a lack of funding during the recent economic crash. But thanks to an admirable group of student body members, we’ll start to turn that problem around. The top ten students to bring in funding for the school will each receive a prize for their contribution, but this award will be kept a surprise until 2: 00 p. m. For now, that’s all from me. The next speaker is your headmaster with important information on this week’s storm and our homecoming football game. Go Eagles!

56.Dear David,
I hope this letter finds you well. So delighted to receive your first draft for the news report themed ”Online Safety“, I’m writing to brief you on the noticeable problems and offer some suggestions for improvement.
Fabulous as your work is, there are still something to be improved. To begin with, the headline, which fails to get the readers’ attention immediately and raise their awareness of online safety, should be simple and unusual. As for the ending, it is a little bit dull. Ending with a short summary is also preferable. Not only can it help the readers remember the main idea but also you can inform them of what you want them to think and do.
Hope my suggestions are of some help to your improvement. Your revised work is highly expected!
Yours,
Li Hua

57. Para.1: After Liam and Mia left, I grabbed the movie and popped it in. As the familiar scenes of Captain Crush, Part 2 unfolded on the screen, I couldn’t focus. The story of the villain’s lie spiraling out of control hit too close to home. I realized how my own lie had hurt Liam. Guilt gnawed at me. I kept replaying the disappointed look in his eyes. I knew I had to make it right. I turned off the movie, determined to find a way to fix our friendship.
Para. 2: The next morning, I met Liam at the bus stop. My heart pounded nervously. “Liam,” I said, looking him straight in the eye, “I’m really sorry. I shouldn’t have lied to you. I was just so excited about the song. I know that’s no excuse.” Liam was silent for a moment, then he sighed. “It’s okay. I get it. I was just disappointed you didn’t trust me enough to tell the truth.” I smiled in relief. “Let’s make a deal. Next time I’ll be honest, and we can work out a way to balance both basketball and music.” Liam grinned. “Deal.” As the bus arrived, we boarded together, our friendship stronger than before.
