Here are some wonderful festivals around the world that happen in spring. If you want to know more about them, please click here or visit http://www./festival.htm
Songkran—Thailand
Dates: 13 th-15th, April
In Thailand, people celebrate a festival called Songkran, when people head out to the streets with water guns to spray (喷洒) everyone who walks past. It’s a very important traditional celebration in the country.
Naghol—Vanuatu
Dates: Every Saturday from April to May
Every year, villagers come together to celebrate the harvest of yams (甘薯), an important part in the people’s diet in Vanuatu. The festival is most famous for its “land diving (潜水) ceremony”. During the ceremony men and boys dive to the ground from high wooden towers with only two thin vines (藤) tied to their feet.
Cherry Blossom Viewing—Japan
Dates: The cherry blossom season is different from year to year depending on the weather.
The festival is well-known. The Japanese celebrate the days when the flowers finally blossom. Only a few days later, the petals (花瓣) fall to the ground, like pink snowflakes. That means the traditional festival only lasts for several days. In Japan, almost everyone has picnics in the parks to view the flowers.
Sinhalese New Year—Sri Lanka
Dates: 13th or 14th, April
Just like in many other countries in South East Asia, this is the time when people celebrate the traditional New Year, an ancient celebration which marks the end of the harvest season and is one of two times of the year when the sun is straight above Sri Lanka. There are a lot of delicious foods during the celebration.
21.What will most likely happen to a tourist walking in the street during SongKran in Thailand
A.He will get wet. B.He will hurt his feet.

22.How is Cherry Blossom Viewing different from the other festivals
A.It is a traditional festival. B.It is a very famous festival.
C.Its date is different every year. D.It provides visitors with delicious foods.
23.Where are you most likely to find the text
A.On TV. B.In a report. C.On the Internet. D.In the newspaper.
The text from my son said it all, “Dad, there’s an article you were born to write that the world is finally ready for: Bring Back the Handkerchief (手帕)!” As my son knows, there’s no “bring back” for me. For me, the handkerchief never left.
My mother raised me with several fixed rules. One was that a gentleman always has a clean handkerchief in his right rear pocket, a piece of simple cotton, roughly 15 inches square and less than four inches when folded. I was a dutiful son, but as a child, I had been wondering what it was there for. After 60 years, my body weight now feels wrong if I’m heading out of the house with an empty back pocket.
I am sure this habit has sometimes struck friends but in polite company nobody comments on somebody else’s business. Children like my kids think of my hankie ridiculously old-fashioned and they have their arguments. If you have to be prepared every day for allergies or a cold, why not choose a little packet of tissues, which saves you from that disgusting business of blowing your nose in the thing and then stuffing it back in your pants
I understand their point. But a handkerchief is more durable and has a far wider variety of uses. Can you grab the handle of a pot that’s boiling over with a Tempo tissue Or do you recall the cases of skinned knees and drippy noses that hankie wiped In fact, my wife gave me several new handkerchiefs as gifts. Neither of us can count the number of times she wiped her tears at a movie, or, as it happens, she’s needed to blow her nose.
Yet not even my mother could have predicted the hankie’s new role as an Essential Public Health Appliance. All of us have learnt how hard it is to follow advice from medical experts about not touching your face. Here is an answer. Use your hankie. In case of emergency, your handkerchief can become a makeshift DIY mask that can be pulled over your lower face like a robber entering a bank.
And it will certainly give me the chance to lift my chin and look at my adult children through one eye, asking in her good-hearted way, “What do you have to say now, smarty-pants ”
24.What kind of person is the author in the eye of his son
A.His father is a born writer. B.His father lost his handkerchief long ago.
C.His father will bring back the handkerchief. D.His father has a habit of using handkerchief.
25.How do the younger generation like the handkerchief
A.They like it very much. B.They regard it as fashionable.
C.They consider it inconvenient. D.They desire to have it someday.
26.What can be learned from the passage
A.The function of handkerchiefs has been updated.
B.Handkerchiefs will be taken over by tissues sooner or later.
C.The author’s wife feels embarrassed to give him a handkerchief.
D.The author was made fun of by his friends for his use of handkerchiefs.
27.What’s the tone of the author in the passage
A.Bossy. B.Humorous. C.Serious. D.Critical.
Earlier this month, Bob Dylan released The Philosophy of Modern Song, a collection of 66 songs, detailing their status in music and, sometimes, explaining what a given track might mean or do. The book reminded me of the Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music, in which Smith intelligently summarizes each song's narrative arc as if it were a newspaper headline. Dylan is less direct and more tends to allegorical (讽喻的) long speeches.
Dylan has always had a slightly tense relationship with the writers and journalists who grammatically analyze his songs for meaning, and, while reading The Philosophy of Modern Song, there were moments when I grew slightly red-faced, worried that the book might be an purposeful joke, making fun of all the drooling (垂涎) critics who have gone thrilled trying to illustrate the greatness and beauty of his work. Yet the pattern and rhythm of his descriptions will be quite familiar to anyone who listened to “Theme Time Radio Hour”, the Sirius XM show that Dylan hosted from 2006 to 2009.
Ultimately, both projects repeat, in a serious way, just how difficult it is to study, investigate, and evaluate something as indescribable and brain-scrambling (烧脑) as popular music.
The Philosophy of Modern Song picked a limited number of songs, for Dylan to define the masterpieces that defined him, and he did so determinedly. Much like Smith’s Anthology, Dylan’s book is deeply personal, despite its sweeping title. It’s obvious that Dylan did not adjust his preferences to suit a cultural narrative or to play down his age. Yet that the book contains only four songs performed by women is both depressing and astonishing. This might lead readers to question Dylan’s character and, more worrying, to wonder about the limits of his musical knowledge.
28.What do the two books, The Philosophy of Modern Song and Anthology of American Folk Music, have in common
A.The writing style. B.The writers’ career.
C.The books’ subject. D.The creation background.
29.Why might the author feel slightly red-faced
A.Because he was on bad terms with Bob Dylan.
B.Because he failed to listen to Dylan’s radio program.
C.Because he was laughed at for his comments on Dylan’s book.
D.Because he may be among those critics taking advantage of Dylan’s works.
30.What do we know about the book The Philosophy of Modern Song
A.It presents a whole history of American folk music.
B.It offers a review on Bob Dylan’s personal music albums.
C.It suggests a possible lack of attention to women’s music.
D.It follows the example of Anthology of American Folk Music.
31.What’s the writer’s purpose in writing this passage
A.To question Dylan’s expertise in folk music.
B.To introduce the newly-published book by Bob Dylan.
C.To blame Dylan for his underestimating female musicians.
D.To compare the two books of Philosophy and Anthology.
Dogs may understand more than they show. Pet dogs’ brains displayed neural (神经的) signs of surprise when their owners showed them an unexpected toy. The findings, published March 22 in Current Biology, suggest that dogs create mental concepts of objects.
“Anyone who has ever interacted very much with a dog probably is not that surprised to know that dogs understand that your speech is referring to at least a few common objects,” says Ellen Lau, a neuroscientist at the University of Maryland in College Park. But some people may have assumed this “understanding” is a simple reaction to the sound of the word.
Marianna Boros, a neuroscientist at Eotv’s Lorand University in Budapest, recruited 27 pet dogs and their owners. The team asked the owners to bring five familiar toys and other objects to the lab. Researchers stuck electrodes (电极) to the dogs’ heads and gave them two tasks: lieon a mat and stay awake.
Every so often, a dog would hear a recording of its owner saying things like, “Kun-Kun, look, the ball!” The dog’s owner was on the other side of a wall with a window covered by the curtains. Just after the recording played, the curtains were opened, showing the owner holding a toy—the ball or a different toy, such as a rope.
Just after seeing an unexpected object, an electrode monitoring (监测) brain activity picked up a larger-than-normal signal. This signal indicates surprise, the team says, and suggests that the dog had already formed a mental concept and expectation of the ball after hearing that word. In fact, the signal was especially strong for a mismatch involving words that the dogs reportedly knew very well. “That suggests that it is really about understanding and knowledge of the word,” Boros says.
32.Which statement best reflects Ellen Lau’s view on dogs’ understanding of speech
A.Dogs understand speech primarily as a reaction to the sound of words.
B.Dogs understand speech, especially when it involves common objects.
C.Dogs have limited understanding of speech, mainly reacting to tone.
D.Dogs shows understanding of the deeper meaning of the speech.
33.How did researchers test dogs’ reactions
A.By monitoring their brain activity. B.By observing their behaviors.
C.By playing recordings. D.By opening the curtains.
34.What does the signal mentioned in paragraph 5 indicate
A.Dogs hear commands. B.Dogs display behaviors.
C.Dogs show interest. D.Dogs form expectations.
35.Which might be the best title for the text
A.Examining Dogs’ Hearing of Words B.Revealing Dogs’ Mental Concepts
C.Exploring Dogs’ Reactions to the Orders D.Studying Dogs’ Neural System
Three Ways For Children to Learn From The Land This Earth Month
Even if you live in a big city, you can still experience nature firsthand. 36 It’s all that we experience with our senses when we go outside. Here are three ways to introduce the concept of climate change to kids while encouraging a connection with the environment.
Keep a climate journal.
37 However, you can explain that climate is simply the pattern of weather in a certain place over time. Have them keep a weather journal of the local weather day to day to get a sense of the climate in their area. For the older kids, discuss different weather measurement tools that are used by meteorologists (气象学家), such as barometers and hygrometers.
38
Kids can help take care of plants, like vegetables in a garden or flowering plants in pots. Growing and nurturing plants helps children understand that living things have needs and that people have a role to play in helping living things meet those needs. Make connections between climate change and the needs of plants; for example, how hotter temperatures may mean that a plant needs more water.
Build an outdoor play tool kit.
Put together an outdoor tool kit with a magnifying glass (放大镜), a pair of binoculars, a shovel, and a clear container with a lid or a bucket. These items can help kids find and collect natural specimens (标本) to examine. If they need ideas for how to bring nature into their outdoor games, try starting with something they are already interested in. 39
It doesn’t take much to strengthen a lifelong relationship between children and the natural world, but it helps to start early and be consistent. 40 With a little guidance from parents and educators, children who care about the environment will grow into adults who care about the environment.
A.Get in the dirt.
B.Develop interest in plants.
C.Nature isn’t just wilderness.
D.Climate change is a tough subject for younger kids.
E.Their desire to protect the planet will naturally grow.
F.Connecting with nature requires no special destination.
G.This could mean building a mini amusement park using natural materials.

One day my grandfather gave me a gift — a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get at the money was to break the piggy bank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea: the piggy bank would help save my money so that, at the end of the year, I might have enough for that bike I dreamt about. He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised that I wouldn’t break it open until I could afford my dream bike.
Whenever he gave me a little bit of money, he would say, “This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up.” When he gave me larger amounts, it was clearly for saving in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it.
Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful pens, I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about ice-creams or pens went away. So for almost six months, I only put money into the piggy bank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn’t break my piggy bank for anything. But one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake (地震) had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces, I was sleepless that night.

I decided to stop shopping online for two months to see how it would affect my personal spending. In the first week, I found it really hard to refuse the temptation from emails and online photos of new products from some of my favorite shops. Every time I saw something I wanted, I said to myself: Is this something you absolutely need in life And without a doubt, the answer was always no. Once I broke my habit of spending 30 minutes or an hour each night before bed seeing what was for sale online, I was able to focus on activities that were meaningful and didn’t cost me a penny. And once I stopped shopping online, I realized way too much money was going towards clothing and shoes. For example, last month I spent nearly $1,000 on clothing and shoes, and that’s almost one third of my monthly salary! I feel better knowing not only where my money is going, but also that I’m not filling my home with items I don’t need.

根据第一段中“Earlier this month, Bob Dylan released The Philosophy of Modern Song , a collection of 66 songs, detailing their status in music and, sometimes, explaining what a given track might mean or do. The book reminded me of the Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music, in which Smith intelligently summarizes each song’s narrative arc as if it were a newspaper headline.
根据第二段中“Dylan has always had a slightly tense relationship with the writers and journalists who grammatically analyze his songs for meaning, and, while reading The Philosophy of Modern Song , there were moments when I grew slightly red-faced, worried that the book might be an purposeful joke, making fun of all the drooling (垂涎) critics who have gone thrilled trying to illustrate the greatness and beauty of his work.
根据第四段中“Yet that the book contains only four songs performed by women is both depressing and astonishing. This might lead readers to question Dylan’s character and, more worrying, to wonder about the limits of his musical knowledge.
根据第一段中“The book reminded me of the Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music , in which Smith intelligently summarizes each song's narrative arc as if it were a newspaper headline. Dylan is less direct and more tends to allegorical (讽喻的) long speeches. 和第三段中“Ultimately, both projects repeat, in a serious way, just how difficult it is to study, investigate, and evaluate something as indescribable and brain-scrambling (烧脑) as popular music.

根据第二段““Anyone who has ever interacted very much with a dog probably is not that surprised to know that dogs understand that your speech is referring to at least a few common objects,” says Ellen Lau, a neuroscientist at the University of Maryland in College Park.(马里兰大学帕克分校的神经科学家Ellen Lau说:“任何与狗有过密切互动的人都不会感到惊讶,因为狗能理解你的语言至少指的是一些常见的物体。”)”
根据第五段“Just after seeing an unexpected object, an electrode monitoring (监测) brain activity picked up a larger-than-normal signal.(就在看到一个意想不到的物体后,一个监测大脑活动的电极接收到一个比正常情况更大的信号)”可知,研究人员通过监测狗的大脑活动测试狗的反应。故选A。
根据第五段“This signal indicates surprise, the team says, and suggests that the dog had already formed a mental concept and expectation of the ball after hearing that word.(研究小组说,这个信号表示惊讶,并表明狗在听到这个词后已经形成了对球的心理概念和期望)”可知,第5段提到的信号表明了狗形成期望。故选D。
根据第一段“Dogs may understand more than they show. Pet dogs’ brains displayed neural (神经的) signs of surprise when their owners showed them an unexpected toy. The findings, published March 22 in Current Biology, suggest that dogs create mental concepts of objects.(狗可能懂得的比它们表现出来的要多。

36.根据上文“Even if you live in a big city, you can still experience nature firsthand.(即使你住在大城市,你仍然可以亲身体验大自然)”以及后文“It’s all that we experience with our senses when we go outside.(这是我们外出时用感官体验到的一切)”可知,前文提到在城市中也可以亲身感受自然,后一句提到只要走出家门就可以感知自然。
37.根据后文“However, you can explain that climate is simply the pattern of weather in a certain place over time. Have them keep a weather journal of the local weather day to day to get a sense of the climate in their area. For the older kids, discuss different weather measurement tools that are used by meteorologists (气象学家), such as barometers and hygrometers.(然而,你可以解释说,气候只是某一地区一段时间内的天气模式。
38.根据本段内容“Kids can help take care of plants, like vegetables in a garden or flowering plants in pots. Growing and nurturing plants helps children understand that living things have needs and that people have a role to play in helping living things meet those needs. Make connections between climate change and the needs of plants; for example, how hotter temperatures may mean that a plant needs more water.(孩子们可以帮忙照顾植物,比如花园里的蔬菜或花盆里的开花植物。
39.根据上文“If they need ideas for how to bring nature into their outdoor games, try starting with something they are already interested in.(如果他们需要关于如何将自然带入户外游戏的想法,试着从他们已经感兴趣的东西开始)”可知,上句提到把“nature”带进孩子们的户外活动, G选项中用自然界找到的东西来搭建孩子们的迷你游乐园。
40.根据上文“It doesn’t take much to strengthen a lifelong relationship between children and the natural world, but it helps to start early and be consistent.(加强儿童与自然世界之间的终身关系并不需要太多的努力,但它有助于及早开始并保持一致)”可知,上句提到尽早培养孩子们和自然的关系,并且要连贯。下句“With a little guidance from parents and educators, children who care about the environment will grow into adults who care about the environment.(在父母和教育工作者的一点点引导下,关心环境的孩子将成长为关心环境的成年人)”提到这样的话孩子们就会成长为关心环境的成年人。

故填Before。
故填to bring。
故填which。
The exact date of Chinese New Year之间为主动关系,且为名词单数。故填changes。
故填 a。
故填their。
66.Dear Mary,
I’m extremely happy to receive your letter. Since you mentioned discussing friendship qualities, I’d like to share my perspective as a high school student.
In my opinion, loyalty is of utmost importance. A loyal friend, who remains steadfast in both good and bad times, not only keeps your secrets but also offers constructive criticism when needed. For instance, when I failed my math exam last month, my best friend Anna not only comforted me but also helped me review the mistakes. Additionally, empathy plays a vital role. A friend with empathy can truly understand your feelings. When I felt homesick during a summer camp, my friend Li Wei stayed up all night talking with me.
These qualities make friendships strong and lasting. I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Best wishes,
Li Hua
